July 25, 2010 Seventeenth Sunday In Ordinary Time Fr. J i m's M es s a g e Rev. James F. Lopez My last article for the parish and the last opportunity to teach about this week's Our Lady on the River Parish scripture passages! Christ taught us how to pray to our Father in Heaven, which is 2007-2010 part of the Gospel passage for this week. Jesus taught us to love and to forgive. There is no shame in teaching that to our young and not so young parish members. The very cornerstone of our faith is that Jesus taught us to love one another uncondi- tionally through charity and forgiveness. Charity is not envy or jealousy; gossip or slander. These are the things that lead an individual into sin. Charity is when one of- fers to do for others out of the goodness of their heart. It is when one does something because it is the right thing to do and not for financial gain or accolades. Christ showed this type of charity towards us when he willingly opened his arms on a cross and said that he does this act because he loves us. Charity is when old wounds are forgotten and left in the past for love's sake. That is where forgiveness enters into the very heart of love. Jesus asks His Fa- ther to forgive us for we do not know what we do sometimes. It is those moments of weakness or anxiety where we fall to our temptations. It is the moment when we fall because of our words or actions. Jesus wants to forgive us and comfort us in those times when we are at our weakest. That is why Jesus taught us the Our Father. It is the prayer that protects us, guides us and comforts us because we are calling out to God and asking for His help. And God does not turn us away when we call out to Him in our time of need. God's children need to learn this more and allow it to take root in their hearts for God reads our hearts and not our lips. Finally, as I begin my move to St. Clair Shores, there will be an adjustment to many things. As I leave, I give thanks to Sr. Mary Ann & Sr. Geraldine for their sup- port through some good and not so good times in my life. My thanks to Pam and Judy who constantly gave their best efforts while tackling the work done by three parish staffs. My thanks to Celeste, Nancy and Chris who managed the offices and did the small things and not so small things around the parish that made my life easier. My thanks to Victor, David, Bob, Fizz, Dave, Anna, Marge, James, Jeff and Midge for Fr. Jim, maintaining the three sites for me and looking after me. My thanks go out to Mrs. Lund, Sr. Karen and the teachers of Holy Cross and Cardinal Mooney who demon- strated their loyalty to me and to the parish children. My thanks to Mrs. Smith and Sr. As you leave OLR and begin a Irene who bring Christ to our religious education program. My thanks go to our parish new journey in your life of faith, we kids who always managed to put a smile on my face and comforted me when my dad send you our gratitude, love and died. My thanks go out to the Marine City Police Department who allowed me to ap- preciate my role as spiritual father. Finally to all the organizations and volunteers who prayers. May you always be sur- gave so much to me and to the parish as a whole. Do not stop giving from your heart rounded by those who love you and to your new pastor because when you give from the heart it is done out of love and share your faith in the Lord Jesus not for gain. If I have forgotten anyone, I am sorry but it was a slip of the mind but not of the heart. Christ and our Heavenly Father. I have been asked if I plan on making a visit in the future. I am sure that I will May your faith remain strong come back for a visit now and then because I have to check up on those so-called and true and guide you through all retired priests in our area.
