July 11, 2010 Fifteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time Fr. J i m's M es s a g e Mass Schedule There comes a time in life when we have to say good bye and sometimes Holy Cross, Marine City Site it comes sooner than anticipated. For myself, I thought I would be here for Sunday: 8:30 & 10:30 a.m. another three years or until the activity center debt was paid in full to the Wednesday & Friday: 9:00 a.m. Archdiocese. I was surprised when the Archbishop's Office called and asked if I could take on a new assignment in St. Clair Shores, St. Isaac Jogues. St. Catherine, Algonac Site After I asked for a day to pray and reflect on this request, I asked God to Saturday: 4:00 p.m. open my mind and my heart for clarity. God responded to my prayer by re- Sunday: 12:30 & 7:00 p.m. minding me of the promise I made on the day of my ordination. That was the Monday & Tuesday 9:00 a.m. day in which I promised my obedience to the Cardinal and to his successor. I could have said no, but how is that an example of priestly obedience. St. Mark, Harsens Island Site Being an obedient servant is not an easy task for anyone, especially Saturday: 4:30 p.m. when one is independent and strong-willed. Yet sometimes in life we have to Sunday: 10:00 a.m. do certain things because we have been asked to do so. For example, par- Tuesday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. ents who baptize their child promise to raise their child in the teachings of the Church and bring that child to Mass every week. However, somewhere along Holy Days - as announced the way, some parents seemed to have lost the directions to one of the par- ish's three locations. I know that sounds hard to believe when we live in the Locations age of Mapquest and GPS gadgets. Sometimes the parents will say to me that they will return when schedules get back to normal or when vacations are Marine City Site done. (As I write of this regarding baptism, it can also be applied to the other 610 S. Water St. * Sacraments.) That is fine with me but one should be more afraid of what God Marine City, MI 48039 is thinking and not what I am thinking because the parents and Godparents 810-765-3568 * Fax: 810-765-2974 made their promises before God and His Church's community. Obedience is not selective it is a true commitment. That is why leaving will be difficult because I enjoyed my life here but I Algonac Site also remembered that I was ordained for the entire Church of Detroit and not 1103 Washington St. * just a certain part of it. We must pray that whoever comes to replace me will Algonac, MI 48001 appreciate and love the people of this parish as I have. Will he be the same 810-794-3301 * Fax: 810-794-1849 as me? Oh I hope not! That would mean we accepted complacency in our Office Hours: lives when we should be always aiming for bigger and better ways of loving Monday - Tuesday: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. our Father in Heaven. In this short time together let us pray that a good, holy priest will say yes to the Archbishop and to this parish as I did three years Harsens Island Site ago. 4190 Green Drive * P.O. Box 70 Finally, I will be out of the office for the next few days as I prepare for my Harsens Island, MI 48028 move. Initially, I was set to go on vacation and relax before our missionary 810-748-3828 * Fax: 810-748-9148 priest from Africa arrives for next weekend's Masses. Like all of my recent Office Hours: vacations something seems to happen where I have to change the plans and Tuesday - Friday: 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. attend to more pressing matters. Such is life! I will write more next Sunday. email: parish@ourladyontheriver.net Take care and have a blessed week www.OurLadyontheRiver.net Fr.
