July 4, 2010 Fourteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time Mass Schedule Fr. J i m's M es s a g e Holy Cross, Marine City Site What a great weekend we get to celebrate and enjoy! The 4th of July is a Sunday: 8:30 & 10:30 a.m. fun weekend because we get to spend time with the family maybe with a bar- Wednesday & Friday: 9:00 a.m. beque, or an evening of fireworks with friends, or just taking the time to listen Thursdays of odd months 9:00 a.m. for another Detroit Tigers' victory on the radio. As much as I love the 4th, it is also a time to remember that many people in our country's history overcame St. Catherine, Algonac Site many obstacles and problems so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we Saturday: 4:00 p.m. have today. As we give thanks to these many freedom fighters, we should also be reminded of the example that Jesus Christ gave to us as well. Sunday: 12:30 & 7:00 p.m. Jesus is the greatest of freedom fighters because of the act he performed Monday & Tuesday 9:00 a.m. on the cross. Jesus, although innocent, willingly opened his arms on the Thursdays of even months 9:00 a.m. cross and died so that we could have true freedom from the slavery of sin. He accepted our sins as his own and forgave us because he loves us and wants St. Mark, Harsens Island Site us to have that freedom from sin and death. Yet all he asks from us in return Saturday: 4:30 p.m. is to use our freedom for the good of others and give back to our Father in Sunday: 10:00 a.m. heaven through those acts of goodness. It is amazing how Christ demon- Tuesday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. strates his love for us in such selfless ways and he continues to love us even though at times we continue to act in selfish ways. email: parish@ourladyontheriver.net I mention this because in a few weeks we will be having our parish mis- www.OurLadyontheRiver.net sionary arrive from the Archdiocese of Gulu, Uganda. This missionary priest will be making his appeal so that we can support him and his fellow mission- aries in spreading the Gospel of Life in their country. I hope that when we hear his message we can help him financially but I also hope that we will gain a greater appreciation of the freedoms we have in our lives. I will give more information regarding our visiting priest in next week's bulletin. Finally, I would like to encourage our parish to participate in the OLR- Holy Cross 2002 Club. As a parish we are fortunate to have a school in which we can instill a Christ-centered education for our children; unfortunately we are witnessing the decline of Catholic schools within our Archdiocese. That is why I am asking for parish wide participation because we have children in our midst who have been progressing in their spiritual and academic formation. However, many of these children cannot afford to return because of the finan- cial burdens placed upon their families. If you can afford something from your savings, I hope that you will contribute. If you would like to pool your monies with other parish members to participate that would be wonderful. However, if you cannot contribute because you are experiencing financial strains then I would hope that you would at least send us your prayers for a successful campaign. Please take the time to prayer over this and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in your decision. Have a safe 4th of July and enjoy the rest of your week! Fr.
