May 30, 2010 The Most Holy Trinity Fr. Jim's Message Memorial Weekend is here and I hope we take the time to remember and thank a veteran or service person for the sacrifices they have made so that we could Memorial Day embrace our freedom. As long as we are thanking our men and women who serve in the Armed Forces, let us not forget the men and women who serve our local commu- nities in the police and fire departments, the EMS technicians and Emergency room doctors and nurses. These men and women are making many sacrifices for our well being. For example, as Chaplain for the Marine City Police Department, I have been able to witness first hand the time and energy these officers put in protecting and serving our community. They are a dedicated group that strives in giving their very best each time they take a patrol. That is why it is disheartening when you read stories about officers injured or killed in the line of duty and a certain part of our society makes a mockery or a joke about the loss of life, especially when that life was there to answer a call for help. It is interesting how any community can tear down a police department or fire department for not responding to a call or not responding fast enough. It truly is easier to cast stones when things are not done to one's liking. Then again, it is just as interesting that no positive commendations are given when a call is answered immedi- ately and a life or lives are saved from harm. No one has greater love than It reminds me of how confused Jesus must have been while living amongst the people of his community. The people begged him to heal and to save but when things this, to lay down one's life did not go to their liking they responded by rejecting him and placing him on a cross for one's friend. like a common criminal. Jesus gave the people what they needed and yet it seemed John 15:13 like it was never enough. Jesus gave us the greatest gift we could ever receive from him and that is love! Still we wanted more from the Savior, so he gave us his Holy Spirit and we still wanted more. Jesus died so we could have life with the Father in Heaven, yet we still want more. Some time in the future there will be a moment when Mass Schedule the Holy Trinity will say to us: Enough! The lessons that were entrusted to us were very simple: live and love selflessly and not selfishly for if we do that we are following Holy Cross, Marine City Site in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Our Savior showed us that to live in his light we must Sunday: 8:30 & 10:30 a.m. be selfless creatures that is why it is important that we recognize those men and Monday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. women who serve and protect our communities, our nation and our freedoms. God bless them always and forever! Before I forget, I want to thank you for remembering my 6th anniversary to the St. Catherine, Algonac Site priesthood. I was able to spend some time with my classmates and recall how we Saturday: 4:00 p.m. were the day before ordination and what it was like after ordination. The favorite story Sunday: 12:30 & 7:00 p.m. was the industrial size tissue boxes given to my mom in preparation for the Ordination Monday - Friday: 7:30 a.m. Mass because mom's reputation amongst us was that she could cry endlessly! She thought it was quite funny considering we autographed the boxes for her, anything to St. Mark, Harsens Island Site put a little levity in her life. The second story is just as interesting. I can not figure out to Saturday: 4:30 p.m. this day how everyone ended up in my room after we were ordained. Close to twenty Sunday: 10:00 a.m. guys were packed in my small dorm room: newly ordained priests, seminarians, for- Tuesday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. mer seminarians, some of my friends from college all came into my room to celebrate. Some guys were so at ease in my room that they raided my frig, my snack drawers and told me they would pay me back later! It has been six years and I am still waiting. I email: parish@ourladyontheriver.net love them anyways and I love you for allowing me the privilege of serving as your www.OurLadyontheRiver.net shepherd here at Our Lady on the River Parish.
