Pastor's Message
As I write my article, I have been reminded that Autumn has arrived and Summer has
left us and will not return until 2010. The seasons are changing but I hope we take the
time to appreciate God's gifts and blessings He has shown us. I mention this because I
would like to share with you an update regarding my Dad. Since June, Dad was suffering from
the complications of his chemotherapy treatments for an unknown cancer in his abdomen. He
had been in residence at a nursing home for the entire Summer receiving treatments for his
cancer along with a rehabilitation regiment to learn how to walk again. Dad was in a
hospital bed for so long that he lost all muscle mass in his legs and could not even stand
on his own. It was difficult to witness my Dad go through this type of suffering but he
proved to me what a terrific witness of faith he has within him.
I struggled with his condition and asked for your prayers for my Dad and my family.
We prayed for a miracle of some kind so we could at least have an idea of what type cancer
he had in his body. It seems to us that facing an unknown cancer could be more difficult
than facing a known cancer. Well, I am happy to report that Dad is cancer free! The doctors
are scratching their heads in awe because every test taken pointed to some type of cancer.
Now, there is no trace of it in his abdomen. Even his new oncologist was amazed at the
change in his condition. She told him that she is determined to find answers as to why he
was diagnosed with cancer in the first place. Instead of giving him chemo treatments, the
oncologist asked Dad to start eating again and not to worry about dieting. He asked if he
could have a chocolate Frosty from Wendy's. She replied that he could have all the Frosties
he wanted. While the news is good the oncologist still wants Dad to be aware that there was
something in his body that was making him sick and she is going to do her best to find
answers for him. So we are not completely out of the woods with this sickness.
A question has arisen: was this a miracle? I cannot answer that for sure but I do know
this, I asked God to embrace my Dad and bring comfort to him. I did not ask for a cure but
asked for Dad to accept this trial. God answered my prayers. God embraced my Dad and
showered His love upon him while he was hospitalized and showed him how to embrace the
Cross as Jesus did. Dad did so with the same dignity as Christ and that is all that matters
to me.
There will be more updates periodically. But on behalf of my Dad and the family, we cannot
thank the parish enough for all the prayers that have been showered upon him for his
healing. We are extremely grateful and humbled by the love that has graced our lives
throughout this period. Dad's new goal besides a chocolate Frosty is return back to the
parish and thank you all himself!
Prayers to you for a blessed and peaceful week,
Fr. Jim
Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
Today's scripture from the Book of Numbers describing the episode with Eldad and
Medad proves that the Spirit of the Lord can “come to rest” on anyone in any place at any
time. God's way does not follow our measure. Jesus' review of discipleship continues to
surprise us and challenge us about honesty, self-examination, community and exclusivity.
This week's Gospel tells of someone who is not a follower of Jesus casting out demons in
the name of Jesus, and gives insight into the nature of discipleship, making clear that
there's always more to learn.
Last week, some disciples had been trying to one-up each other, and now, these
chosen few try to distinguish themselves collectively as better than the rest. They want
the lines drawn about those who are in versus those who are out. Jesus smashes this self-
defined smugness with an admonition about the attitudes and actions that can do damage
which discourages and undermines others. Discipleship is decided in our interior depths by
our behavior rather than by our being in the inner circle.
Jesus expands the boundaries, and welcomes any and all who properly invoke the
power of His Name. “I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners” Jesus tells us
(Matthew 9:13) or in another translation, “I'm here to invite outsiders, not coddle
insiders,” and proclaims: “whoever is not against us is for us.” (Mark 9:40)
He goes on to stress that anyone who performs a service, no matter how small, because of
the name of Jesus, becomes a member of the community and shares in its rewards.
What makes you sad, mad, glad???
Are we getting worked up into tears or fears over the right things? These are
questions arising from Jesus' discussion in today's scripture. Sensitivity to an
inclusive, larger view of living faith and the spiritual needs of all is a concern. We can
get caught up in all sorts of things that take away from what is really essential. In the
harsh words about “cutting off” and “plucking out,” Jesus calls each of us to realize that
true discipleship means loyalty to God first and to His word, not letting anything -
anything! - distract us or derail us in our search for the things of God - the compassion,
peace and justice of God, or diminish the love of God we cherish in our families, friends,
or Church community. God sends His Holy Spirit upon those He chooses to do His work. Be
alert for the Holy Spirit within other persons and respect them, even if you do not like
them. God works in mysterious ways, choosing some unusual people to carry out His work.
May we have the courage and wisdom of faith to “let go” and remove from our lives whatever
cuts us off from seeing and accepting God's Holy Spirit at work within ourselves and in all
the people around us.
Saints in every vocation quest….
once again brings kudos to Patrick & Regina Lomasney, John & Joann Vance, Dolores Stone,
Mary Minnich, Mary Margaret, Spencer Adkins and Patricia Elizabeth Johnston, who discovered
St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
Now who is the patroness of nurses, miners, jewelers and is invoked in prayer
against fire, thunderstorms & famine? Her feast day is celebrated with a fireworks
display. She was a martyr, and honored for her great courage in suffering.

With still less than 50% of our registered parish families pledging to the CSA

will need to come from our operating budget, which, with the current situation could hurt
more of our programs. Won't you please consider helping your parish?
Evangelization Ministry
The 2009-2010 Saturday Evangelization Series begins this Saturday at Sacred Heart
Major Seminary. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the Office for
Evangelization Ministry to present the eight-part series, which will focus this year on
“Evangelizing Hot-Button Issues: Giving Witness to Hard-to-discuss Topics of Faith.”
The September topic, “We Don't have to Close our Minds to Believe: Faith and
Reason,” is presented by Dr. Eduardo Echeverria, professor of philosophy. The next topic,
on October 17, will be “Survival of Family in the Secular World: A First Aid Primer,”
presented by Dr. Mark Latkovic, professor of moral and systematic theology. All events are
held from 10 a.m. to noon., and a freewill donation is collected to cover the cost of
refreshments and speakers.
For more information about Evangelization Ministry, or other CSA-funded programs and
ministries, go to the Archdiocese website, www.AODonline.org.
A Note From The Principal
As the flowers outside my office window continue to bloom, I find myself watching a
little visitor. At first, I thought it was a big bumblebee. Upon closer inspection, I
discovered the smallest hummingbird that I have ever seen. This little bird was just
fluttering away with wings moving faster than I could see. She wasn't overly colorful, and
she didn't make a sound. However, she was probably the most persistent bird I have ever
come across! The plant that she was interested in is preparing for fall, and its flowers
are starting to die, but she kept at it, even if there was just one little flower open on
the branch. Watching her work made me really appreciate what I do and the blessing that I
have.
Market Day is back for the school year! Orders will be taken through Monday,
September 28th. This year, orders will be picked up in the school building. Market Day
is a real time saver. Please stop in the school or parish offices for an order form, or
check it out online at www.marketday.com.
On Monday we will host the girls' basketball teams St. Mary's in St. Clair, and on
Wednesday we will be hosting the teams from McCormick Catholic Academy in Port Huron. We
are winding up our 'home stretch' and hope you will find the time to join us. Our boys'
return to the football field hosting MCA on Saturday, September 26th and St. Mary's on
Saturday, October 3rd. The games begin at 10:30 a.m. at the China Township Park.
This year, we will be celebrating the 140th anniversary of Holy Cross Catholic
School. We have many alumni in our community and would like to share both their memories
of Holy Cross and how their education at Holy Cross impacted their lives with our school
and parish communities.
If you or someone you know is a former Crusader, please send your memories to the
school office or to my email address: principal@holycrossonline.net. Having 140 years of
history should give us at least 140 memories!
Have a blessed week!

If you or someone you know is interested in exploring the Catholic Faith and
considering seeking full communion with the Catholic Church, please give us a call soon.
We are beginning to shape up a schedule of times to meet. The day will be Sunday, and the
time is morning, depending on the upcoming new Mass schedule.
The R.C.I.A. is NOT a program. The R.C.I.A. is NOT a class. It is primarily a
journey in faith, a gradual process, responding to the call and work of God in one's life.
The number to call is 810-794-4965 if you're ready to embark on a remarkable journey of
discovery of God's incredible love and care for you.
Bring a friend, bring a spouse, bring a supportive person, or come by yourself,
but, please, if you're thinking about it, COME.
We gathered last Sunday for a brief time of inquiry and interest. We'll gather
again on Sunday, October 11th, at St. Catherine Chapel at 11:00 a.m.

Sharing the Gospel
The disciples started to feel proud because they thought they were the "in" group
of friends of Jesus. One day they saw a complete stranger working powerful miracles in the
name of Jesus. The disciples told the stranger to stop because he was not part of their
special group. The disciples should have encouraged him instead.
Prayer
Dear God, help me to work side-by-side with other people who love Jesus, no matter who they
are. Amen

Word of Life
In order to protect nature, it is not enough to intervene with economic incentives or
deterrents. The decisive issue is the overall moral tenor of society. if there is a lack
of respect for the right to life and to a natural death, if human conception, gestation and
birth are made artificial, if human embryos are sacrificed to research, the conscience of
society ends up losing the concept of human ecology and, along with it, that of
environmental ecology. It is contradictory to insist that future generations respect the
natural environment when our educational systems and laws do not help them to respect
themselves.

Vocation Family Prayer Comments
Each Sunday, at the 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Mass, anyone is Invited to
take home the parish crucifix and prayer manual to pray at home for vocations. Each week,
those who have had this privilege, are invited to write comments on their experience.
Some of the comments received follow:
“Thank you to Our Lady on the River Parish for starting the Prayer Cross for
Vocations. We all have someone in our lives who is discerning what path to choose for
their life. While there are many choices - priesthood, vowed religious life, married life
or single life - there is only one that is right for each of us. Just by having this
Prayer Cross available to us is a reminder not only to pray for our own vocation, but for
our family, friends and parish members as they come to a choice for theirs. This practice
is also an avenue to promote prayer in the home and within families.”

With Thanks For Their Service in Christ
Priests' Retirement Fund
This weekend our parish is taking up a special collection to support our priests'
retirement. With Thanks for their Service in Christ will help remedy the estimated $24.9
million shortfall in our Priests' Retirement Fund, which provides a minimal monthly pension
as well as health and automobile insurance to priests over the age of 70.
As you may know, the retirement years can be difficult for our senior priests. No
longer supported by their parish communities, they rely on minimal Social Security benefits
and their pension from the Priests' Retirement Fund for basic needs, such as food, housing
and transportation.
We are sure each and every one of you will give this collection careful and
prayerful thought and that you will give what you can to help out our senior priests who
are still helping every week at Our Lady on the River Parish.
Thank you and God bless you for your generosity.

Prayer For Life
Heavenly Father, from the smallest cell to the largest creature, You are the origin
and creator of all life.
May we be so in awe of Your wondrous power that we never take for granted the
wonder of life, the beauty of creation or the potential of every person.
We recognize the value and worth of human life, from conception to natural death.
Help us to protect and nurture all life so that in perfect harmony we may offer to You a
fitting song of living praise.
We ask this through Jesus, Your Son, who lives and reigns forever. Amen. ~
Rev. James Gaffney
October 4, 2009
At the origin of every man and woman, and thus in all human fatherhood and motherhood, we
find God the Creator. For this reason, married couples must accept the child born to them,
not simply as theirs alone, but also as a child of God, love for his or her own sake and
called to be a son or daughter of God.
~Pope Benedict XVI

Love Your Neighbor
Jesus tells us the second greatest commandment, after loving God with all our
hearts, is to love our neighbors as ourselves (CCC 2055). The tenth commandment serves to
instill in us the desire to abolish envy and jealously completely. If we are willing to
acknowledge that everything we have and are is a gift of God, we cannot afford to challenge
God's wisdom in his gifts to others.
