Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
Who are you? How do you introduce yourself? It's always a bit intriguing how any
of us choose to define ourselves and explain to someone who we are. Job interviewers
frequently begin by saying: “Tell me about yourself.” Where one begins is usually more
revealing than the facts they give. Many times there is a temptation to define ourselves
by our successes and accomplishments.
In today's Gospel, the question Jesus poses “But who do you say that I am?” may
suggest that He wants each of us, personally, to know Him well. In the Gospel text, that
question led to Peter's response that Jesus is “the Christ.” Jesus then begins to fill in
the blanks, and give insight into the meaning of discipleship for all of us.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said: “Discipleship requires us to make a fundamental
decision to follow Jesus and to accept the consequences of that decision. There is a cost
to discipleship. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace
without Jesus Christ. It is an intellectual assent. It requires no moral courage. Costly
grace is the grace of discipleship, of really and truly following the way of Jesus Christ -
a way that leads first to the cross before it leads to resurrection.”
Discipleship in our time is a genuine investment. It requires an unselfish
commitment and authentic ministry. Jesus reminds us: “If you would follow Me, follow
where life would lead. If you would be My disciple, deny yourself, take up your cross and
follow Me.”
“Discipleship involves trying to make life better for others, going beyond
ourselves to improve the lives of others.” says Joan Chittister, osb.
Pope Benedict XVI adds: “The courage to bind oneself permanently, the unconditional Yes -
that is discipleship.”
This all suggests for us that being attentive to someone else's needs should be the
lens through which we look upon life as Jesus modeled for us in His life, as our parents
and grandparents demonstrated for us in their lives. This means we will need courage,
energy, faith and vision in accepting the challenge of being disciples of Jesus. It
implies a commitment of a confirming love for others, without limit.
Following Jesus or not is left up to us. Jesus challenges all of us who would be His
disciples to seek humble generosity, reconciliation, selfless service and community. God
knows it isn't easy.
Who are you? How do you define yourself? How do you respond to Jesus' question?
We can't look to a spokesperson to answer for us. We can look to this Gospel, though, as a
reference point in making clear our decision and response.
Saints in every vocation quest….
Congratulations to those who discovered St. Robert Bellarmine in last week's quest.
It's amazing! Kudos to John & Joann Vance, Patrick & Regina Lomasney, Dolores Stone, and
Mary Minnich. I really thought it would be a stumper! The life of this week's saint
shows that we can never know how much good we do when we accept our sufferings with faith.
He was born in 1803, and after three years in parish work, joined the Marist Fathers and
became a missionary.
Peace to you and prayer for your needs,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

A Note From The Principal
This Monday is the Feast of the Holy Cross. This is a special day for our school as
we celebrate our feast day. The cross is a symbol we look upon frequently. We begin and
end our school days with prayer, making the Sign of the Cross. We look to the cross when
we are praying because we see Jesus on the crucifix. We take up the crosses that we are
all given and follow Jesus' example by bearing them with as much grace as we can. I pray
that the crosses you carry will be lightened by your faith.
School is well underway at Holy Cross. Our students and teachers are actively
engaged in building both academic and spiritual foundations for life. It is truly a
blessing to see our students in action. We have room to welcome you and your children to
our Holy Cross family. Please contact the school office for more information.
Speaking of action: it is time for Holy Cross sports! Our football team opened
the season this weekend against St. Augustine. Next weekend, our boys have a bye, but will
be back in action on Saturday, September 26 against McCormick Catholic Academy. Game time
is 10:30 a.m. at the China Township Park. Our girls' basketball teams will be playing
Monday, September 14 at McCormick Catholic Academy. Wednesday is our home opener against
St. Peter's. Games begin at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see you there!
Are you looking to renew your favorite magazine subscription? The Holy Cross
Boosters' Club is hosting the annual magazine sale. Please contact one of our school
families or the school office at 810-765-3591 for more information.
Have you bought SCRIP lately? Did you know that SCRIP has numerous office hours?
You can also drop off an order and pick it up later if you can't make the office hours. I
hope you will take a few minutes to see how SCRIP can work for you and YOUR parish school.

Pastor's Message
The other day we remembered the anniversary of 9/11 or Patriot's Day. To this day,
it is the most tragic event that I have witnessed on television. I was late for my Trinity
class taught by Bishop Quinn that morning and could not concentrate during the entire hour.
I kept wondering what was going to happen next in our country and in our world. How are the
people going to respond? From that moment, our country rose from this tragedy with the
intent of never allowing this type of violence to enter within our borders again; and never
forgetting that we should be proud being called an American. And in order to safeguard our
country and her freedoms sacrifices must be made for the good of all.
I make reference to Patriot's Day in relation to our Gospel passage from St. Mark.
Jesus directs an important question to his followers: “Who do people say that I am?” The
disciples throw out many names however Peter is the one who reveals Jesus as the Christ.
Peter's revelation did not come based on what other people were saying. It came through the
Holy Spirit who opened Peter's heart and mind to see Jesus as our Father in Heaven sees
Jesus. Peter sees Jesus as the one who would be the Savior of the world. Despite his
revelation and knowledge, Peter still falls back to thinking as society thinks. He could
not accept that Jesus would have to suffer and die. Nobody wants to hear that the hero must
suffer, experience rejection and be killed on a cross. Our mindsets have not changed over
generations because we say the same thing today. Our heroes should not have to suffer in
any way, especially dying.
Yet, if you really hear what Jesus is asking of us in regards to discipleship, he
is telling us that we must be selfless in all our deeds. That is what it means to be called
Christian. For if we follow the example of Christ the Lord, we are embracing all of his
teachings and not just some of his teachings; then we will know the true meaning of saving
one's soul for we will take up our cross and follow him. When people see our faith and
works demonstrated then they will know that we are Christian. For a Christian will love and
forgive all people, including those who hate and persecute them, just as Christ has shown
us.
Have a nice week, and don't forget to pray for the men and women who serve our
country and our Church.
All my prayers,
Fr. Jim
Sharing the Gospel
Jesus was the king, the Messiah that God's people had been waiting for. In today's
Gospel reading, the disciples were confused. If Jesus was the king, why was he saying he
would die soon? Jesus' friends did not understand yet that by dying on the cross, Jesus
would save them from their sins.
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for coming to save me from my sins.
Something to Draw
Draw a picture of Jesus carrying his cross.
Mission for the Week
With your family, talk about what you would enjoy if you were a king or queen. Tell how
Jesus was different from other kings.

What is The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross?
September 14 celebrates the feast of the Exaltation (or Triumph) of the Holy Cross,
commemorating the discovery of the true cross. Its importance lies in the theology of the
cross that the feast proclaims. The cross, the instrument of humiliation and death, is
transformed into a symbol of liberation and life. The willing "defeat" that Jesus suffered
by dying on the cross for our sake becomes our true symbol of liberation and triumph.
In baptism, we express our willingness to die with Christ so that we may rise with
him. The cross is the ultimate symbol and expression of our baptismal commitment and
mission. When we enter church, we are asked to make this connection very clear by signing
ourselves with water and the cross, both a living reminder of our baptismal call and
mission. We begin and end all our prayers and liturgical celebrations marked with the sign
of the cross.
The first ritual celebration that catechumens, adults desiring baptism, experience
is that of being marked with the cross of Christ on their foreheads and other parts of
their bodies. The cross is the true focus of their catechumenal journey to baptism in
Christ. The cross is the focus of our desire to live like Jesus and to be willing to give
of ourselves. ©2009 Liturgical
