Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
In today's Gospel, Jesus teaches us a lot about the character of the heart, about

authenticity, about who we are and what we do when no one is looking.
In our day, video cameras at the ATM, Parent Watch, Neighborhood Watch, and webcams

are just about everywhere, and some 27% of large U.S. firms check employee e-mail, so that every

day in most every way, our blurry behaviors are recorded. We're being watched! Webcams placed

in strategic locations seem to put most people on their best behavior. When one's behavior is

accessible for public viewing and evaluation, most respond with acceptable outward behavior. All in

the name of security, perhaps, and the hope of creating a well-behaved society.
Jesus makes it clear in our scripture today for the ears of those who would hear that

outward behavior doesn't necessarily reflect inward character.
Character - that's what shows up when no one is looking and the cameras aren't rolling.

God sees what is in our hearts and minds. Psalm 139 reminds us: “You have searched me, Lord,

and You know me, with all my ways You are familiar.” And today's Psalm 15 says: “Whoever walks

blamelessly, who thinks the truth in the heart and slanders not with the tongue will live in the

presence of the Lord.” In the scriptures today, Jesus calls the Pharisees 'hypocrites.' Hypokrites in

Greek means “actor”. God's look is into our inner self, and refines again that true holiness, true

goodness, is not defined just by what we do, but by who we are. If we can get the heart right,

maybe everything else will fall into place, and we don't need to put on an “acting” behavior when the

webcams are rolling. We can just 'be ourselves' wherever we are.
“If anyone loves Me, he or she will keep My word”, Jesus says. Each of us must act in

accord with our first-hand experience of an up- close, deep, true, personal relationship with Jesus,

flowing from an interior life empowered by the Holy Spirit, in order to remain true to God and faithful in

the area of personal integrity and morality. God created us all and loves us beyond the scope of our

failings and misunderstandings. God's love is a comprehensive package that enables us to live every

moment as a moment of truth. We are each called to holiness of life. That is what we are invited to

do each today of our lives. Let us walk more consciously with God, in God's sight this day, and

learn to be holy, live simply, walk humbly and act justly so that we indeed do love God with all our

heart and our neighbor as ourselves.
Saints in every vocation quest…..
continues this week with accolades for those faithful few who discovered St. Catherine of Siena as

one of two women “Doctors” of the Church. So, congratulations to Mary Minnich, Patricia Johnston,

Mary Margaret & Spencer Adkins, Joann & John Vance, Patrick & Regina Lomasney, Dolores

Stone, and to the last two also for finding St. Jerome Emiliani last week.
Well, now, who would be the Saint who is the patron of journalists and writers? He

received a doctorate in civil & canon law, and too was declared a Doctor of the Church. He also

shared ministry with St. Jane Frances deChantal.
May God shelter you with gentleness
and loving kindness this coming week.

Vocations
The second annual Vocations Convocation for the Priesthood and Consecrated Life will be

held Saturday, September 19. The mission of “Be Not Afraid!” is to bring together all people in the

Archdiocese of Detroit who are working on behalf of vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.
Your gifts to the CSA helps to provide “tools” to bring about the harvest that is abundant.

Through prayer, formation and education, those who attend the Vocations Convocation will leave with

a better appreciation of what it means to “answer a call” and how to bring that about in their

respective ministries and parishes.
The convocation includes Mass with Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, keynote addresses by

Bishop Earl Boyea of Lansing and Sister Ann Shields, SGL, and breakout sessions. The cost is

$15, and registration is required by September 8.
For more information go to www.AODonline.org.

A Note From The Principal

The first day of school is literally around the corner. School begins Tuesday, September 1st at

7:25 a.m. We will be opening our school year with a prayer chain outside around the wonderful

garden planted for Our Blessed Mother. This day is also the 70th anniversary of the beginning of

World War II. We will be praying for peace in both our school and our world as we begin the new

year. Please pray for a wonderful sunny day in which to start our new school year. We will be

welcoming our preschoolers beginning Wednesday, September 9th. We are blessed to be able to

help all of our students build a firm academic and spiritual foundation.
In speaking of families, it is important to remember that Holy Cross Catholic School

welcomes ALL members of our parish and the surrounding community. As the school principal, I

invite all families from our WHOLE parish to take advantage of the opportunity to educate their

WHOLE child, which we offer at Holy Cross Catholic School. While the beginning of the school year

is just a few days away, it is not too late to make that change.
I am waiting for your phone call at 810-765-3591, or your email at

principal@holycrossonline.net. Please let me share with you the opportunities that await your

children here at Holy Cross Catholic School.
This year is the 140th anniversary of Holy Cross Catholic School. I hope that you will

make your family a part of it.
I pray that you have had a wonderful summer and I look forward to sharing this new year

with you.

In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund

Pastor's Message

This past week I received a nice letter from one of our parish members who recently moved

to Denver, Colorado. Mr. Jeremy Burke, a recent graduate from Cardinal Mooney High School and

active member of Our Lady on the River Parish was accepted into the Dominican Order and he is

beginning his first year as a novitiate. Jeremy was involved with so many different things at the parish

ranging from teaching faith formation to our young students, representing the parish at the vicariate

council, participating in our choir and bell choir and finally, taking the role of Christ in our Living

Stations of the Cross at the Good Friday Service. Jeremy is discerning his call to the religious life

and I ask that we pray for his vocation as he begins this journey in the Dominican Order.
As we pray for Jeremy, we cannot forget two other parish members who return to their

studies at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Bryan Shackett and David Bechill who have both been a

wonderful presence this summer go back to Detroit soon and continue their discernment and studies

for the priesthood. It is important that we pray these men who are answering God's calling and

support them with our love and care. So in this “Year of the Priest” let us not forget those who are

studying for the priesthood and the religious life.
So as our seminarians return to their studies, we welcome back our students who are

rested and ready to take on the challenges of another school year. Holy Cross will open the doors on

September 1st and the school looks in very good shape because of the efforts of our maintenance

staff. They put a lot of hard work in cleaning and scrubbing the rooms and hallways. I applaud their

efforts and ask that we say an extra prayer for them thanking them for their work on behalf of our

students. I am also reminded that Religious Education classes begin on September 13th so please

make sure your child has been registered as soon as possible.
Finally, I close my article this week by asking for your assistance in evaluating our current

Mass schedule. Although we expanded the Mass schedule it was not a permanent schedule. It was

tried for a year with some success, however within the last few months we have experienced some

difficulties in filling the Mass times due to vacations or illness. Next week a more formal letter will be

in the bulletin discussing this matter. I am aware that this means another change but this time it is

going to be in accord with the recommendations from the Archdiocese's Office of Parish Life. Your

input will be important in this issue so please read next week's letter.
	All My Prayers,
	Fr. Jim

Sharing the Gospel

Wash your hands before you eat! Did you know that rule came from God, so that we would

stay healthy? In today's Gospel, the Pharisees liked to wash their hands and follow God's rules, only

because they liked to show off. Don't be like those Pharisees. When you follow God's rules, do the

right thing out of love for God.

Prayer
Dear God, help me to keep my heart clean, full of love for you and other people.

	      Amen

Jesus Christ is the Word of life;
Let us give thanks and praise!
He summoned the crowd again and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing

that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what

defile."
