Pastor's Message

As we come to this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus concludes his “Bread of Life”

discourse by revealing some unsettling statements to those who were his followers. Statements

such as eating of his flesh and drinking of his blood spoke of the possible sin of cannibalism. And

remarking that he knew the Father in heaven created confusion on where his heritage really came

from. Jesus was no longer seen as the son of the carpenter, rather he was being seen as the

possible Messiah. The confusion enters because the Messiah was to be victor over those who

oppressed the Jews by achieving military victories like that of King David. This Jesus, how can he be

the Messiah when speaks of peace by loving one's enemies or sacrificing for the love of neighbor?

That is why Jesus asks of his followers in this passage: “Do you also want to leave?” The question is

posed because not every one could accept this new way of thinking or living. However, in order to be

his disciple, one must live a way of life that based on selflessness and not selfishness.
Jesus is asking us the same question today: “Do you want to leave?” It is a fair question

that has meaning but also repercussions. If one leaves Christ, like in the scriptures, there will be

consequences because the person knew that this is the Messiah who gave himself up as the

unblemished Lamb so that we could have eternal life. Not only that but they know that this bread and

wine that we offer as gifts is consecrated into His Body and Blood. How anyone can leave our faith

knowing this information is mind boggling to me. The repercussion that waits comes when they

stand before the Power of God and they must explain why they left a faith based on the reception of

the Body and Blood of Christ.
Do not think though that it will be easier on the one who stays. For Jesus reminds us that

there is a price for discipleship. We are called to live by loving selflessly and unconditionally. Isn't

that what we become when we receive the Body and Blood of Christ? We live a life that is in full

communion with the Messiah for the Spirit will guide us to do and say as He has taught us through

scripture and tradition. That is why the call to discipleship can be
a difficult path at times because we do not let the Spirit guide us rather we let society do the thinking

for us. So if one stays true to the faith, one cannot pick and choose as to what they want to

embrace from Jesus and what they want to ignore. In a sense, Jesus tells us that if we stay with

Him, we must be in 100%. We cannot be one foot in and one foot out, it is all or nothing if one

chooses to stay.
STAFFING UPDATE: As I write this article I am sad to inform the parish that we will no longer have

Mr. Daniel Susan as our Music Minister at Holy Cross. Like many other parishes, we have been hit

hard by the economic situation. Our parish can no longer afford two full time music directors and as

a result Mr. Susan received a permanent lay off from Our Lady on the River. It must be made clear,

this was not a dismissal rather it was a decision based solely on our deficit situation. This means

that Mrs. Bea Wassenberg will be the Director of Music Ministry for Our Lady on the River Parish. I

know that we will continue to pray for Daniel and his wife Barbara as they begin this transition in their

lives. But, we will pray for Bea and her family as well as she begins this new role in our parish.
My God Bless You and Keep You,
Fr. Jim

Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
Strong is God's love for us;
He is faithful forever:
Let us give thanks and praise!

In last Sunday's Gospel we heard Jesus say: “everyone who eats My Flesh and drinks My

Blood is in Me and I am in them.” Jesus' revelation caused division between those who had faith in

Him and those who did not. The unbelievers murmured against Jesus, and even His own disciples

doubted. They find the message “hard”, and they all complain. Jesus didn't retract His message. He

did nothing to ease the difficulty of believing. Quite the opposite, Jesus invites all, including us, to a

deeper faith in this great mystery. The passage today ends with Peter's question: “Lord, to Whom

shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
John's focus throughout the Gospel is on the priority of faith. The question remains before

us to this day. Do we believe? Do we believe and accept that Jesus is the Bread of Life and the

Cup of Salvation? Can we learn to trust in God, whose ways are not our ways, whose thoughts are

not our thoughts, whose scales of measurement are not our measurements?
St. Cyril of Alexandria reminds us that: “being in Jesus' company means being steadfast in

following Him and constant in cleaving to Him.” This is accomplished by deeds springing from virtue.

Upon such virtue, the wisest disciples firmly fixed their minds and refused to depart with the

unbeliever. With good reason they cried out, “Where can we go?”
Faith, loyalty, commitment, love, are gifts freely given. Those who walked away from

Jesus in today's Gospel choose another set of values, another measuring stick in life's journey.
It's all about choices and the freedom the Lord gives us to decide. Jesus challenges us to

remain faithful and echo with Peter: “We have come to believe and are convinced that You are the

Holy One of God.”

A thought you might enjoy pondering:
A clear grasp of God's compassionate justice is demonstrated by the words of one young

theologian interviewed by Jonathan Kozel:
A little girl told me to my delight that dogs will go to heaven. I had just lost a beagle I'd had

for 10 years, and you know how you can mourn for a dog. When she told me that, I was so happy. I

said, “Do we live in the same place?”
She said, “No, the dogs go to animal heaven. ”But seeing I was distressed by that, she

said, “You can visit on the weekends.”
Saints in every vocation quest goes on… with St. Jerome Emiliani being discovered by Mary

Minnich, Pat Johnston, Joann & John Vance. Nice going! Now, - This saints' mother had 23

children of whom she was the youngest. She is the co-patron of Italy. She was uneducated, yet

composed books and shows us that the power of Christ working in us can do infinitely more than we

can ask or imagine!
Prayer, love & God's blessing,

 Disabilities Mass
The sixth annual Mass for persons with disabilities will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Most

Blessed Sacrament next Sunday, August 30. The disabled community plays an active role in the

Mass, serving as readers, Eucharistic ministers and lectors.
Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the Archdiocese of Detroit to advocate for the full

inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of the faith through the Disabilities Concerns

Advisory Board. The board, which serves as a liaison to all Catholic communities within the

archdiocese, advocates for the development of Christian attitudes, accessible accommodations and

architecture.
Through the Office for Catholic Social Action, the Department of Parish Life and Services has

released “Disability Concerns,” a booklet detailing resources available throughout the archdiocese to

facilitate the process of empowering all persons to worship, give service, learn and celebrate

together.

A Note From The Principal

As you are reading this article, I hope you will take the opportunity to come to our open house,

which is underway today (Sunday) from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Our teachers would like to

welcome our current students back and invite new students and their families to become a part of

Holy Cross Catholic School.
This week is our last official week of summer vacation! School begins on Tuesday,

September 1st. This is earlier than the other schools in our area because we are eager to take on

the new year and get started on educating tomorrow's Christian leaders.
We are currently finalizing our class lists. Are your children's or grandchildren's names on

it? Would you like them to be? Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00

p.m. I would be happy to meet with you personally to talk about the benefits of a Holy Cross Catholic

education. If you aren't able to make it in during those times, please call the school at 810-765-

3591 or if you wish, you may send me an email at principal@holycrossonline.net for a personal

appointment.
Is your preschooler looking longingly at backpack and school supplies as you prepare to

send your other children to school? Would you like the opportunity to have your preschooler grow

both academically and socially with children his or her own age? Would you like them to be in a

safe, nurturing environment which promotes an understanding of your faith? If you answered yes to

any of these questions, you belong at Holy Cross Preschool! Mrs. Carolyn Krum, our preschool

director, has a wealth of experience, and provides a wonderful program for the young children of our

parish and the surrounding community. Call the school office at 810-765-3591 to learn more about

the Holy Cross Preschool program.
Would your child benefit from more one-on-one attention and a smaller class size? Would

knowing that your child is in a safe, nurturing environment that reflects your faith put you at ease? If

you answered yes, then you belong at Holy Cross Catholic School. Please choose us as a

PARTNER in your child's education.
If you are looking for a change of pace or a fresh start, and want to know that your WHOLE

child is being educated, make the call today to learn more about Holy Cross Catholic School. We

are currently welcoming students in all grades. It is never too early, or too late, to make a change

for the better.
I pray that each of you has a safe, fun, and relaxing 'last week of summer.' May God bless

your families as we enter the new school year.
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund
Principal
Sharing the Gospel

After Jesus compared himself to manna, and said that he was sent from heaven, many of

his followers turned away from him. They just could not accept what Jesus was saying. It was too

hard for them to understand. We have something they did not have. We have the Holy Spirit to help

us. Sometimes what we learn might be hard for us to understand, too, but we never need to walk

away. We can have faith in Jesus. We can ask him to help us.

Prayer
Dear God, give me the faith to trust Jesus always. Amen

A Sincere Thank You….

Thank you to all who celebrated with me the blessing of my 60th Diamond Jubilee of religious life

as a Sister of St. Joseph. Your prayers, good wishes, cards, gifts, self-giving and presence at Mass

and the wonderful luncheon are deeply appreciated. The Liturgy, Music, food and delightful company

of so many wonderful people will always be a cherished memory. Thank you so much.
God love you,

Year For Priests

O Jesus, Eternal Priest, keep all thy priests within the shelter of thy Sacred Heart, where none may

harm them. Keep unstained their anointed hands which daily touch thy Sacred Body. Keep unsullied

their lips purpled with thy Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the

sublime marks of thy glorious priesthood. Let thy holy love surround them and shield them from the

world's contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom they minister be

their joy and consolation here below and in heaven their beautiful and everlasting crown. Amen.

sustained and supported us during this difficult time. We especially offer thanks to Lois

Moldenhauer and her wonderful 'Luncheon Crew' for the fabulous meal, Fizz for his hard work, Carole

Lohr for the beautiful music, the Parish Staff for their support and understanding and, last but not

least, Fr. James Lopez, Fr. Matthew Ellis, Msgr. George Browne and Fr. Timothy Birney for such a

beautiful and special Mass. Your thoughtfulness in honoring our Barbara will remain in our hearts

forever.
