Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
God's ways are faithfulness and love;
Let us give thanks and praise!
Today's Gospel begins with the final verse of last week - reminding us that it is Jesus' surprise message that actually causes the reaction we'll hear next week. What began in John's chapter six - the amazing feeding of 5,000 - which focused on a quest for faith, concludes with a scene of rejection in John:6:60.
Jesus sets the table of faith for all who would believe. “I am the living bread that came down from heaven;” said Jesus. “Whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Jesus offers us the living bread of His own Body and Blood - which brings us into a deep relationship with God.
Breaking bread with someone was a sign of true intimacy in the ancient world - a sign that those who participated in the meal were bonded for life. Jesus offers Himself to the world - so that we may experience eternal and abundant life - taking in all that He offers - receiving the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and the daily strength to live life to the full with an eternal perspective. We are united in intimacy for life, and as Mother Teresa of Calcutta said: “In each of our lives, Jesus comes as the bread of life - to be eaten, to be consumed by us. This is how He loves us. Then Jesus comes into our human life as the hungry one, the other, hoping to be fed with the bread of our life - our hearts loving, our hands serving.”
We are invited today to believe in one strength: The Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Our Lord Who gives us life. The Eucharist nourishes us on our road of life, moment by moment. God is the only one whose love can keep us living life abundantly for all time. Grasping and living this truth really depends on our response and how great our inner desire to be one with the Lord and one another really is.
Come and see, taste and see the goodness of the Lord!
VBS “got the dock rockin”!
The Thursday morning I was able to visit the Vacation Bible School at our parish was a delightful time. I saw fearless kids shining forth God's light, and teens in Bayou Crews working with happy, adventurous adult Bayou Leaders, motivated by the zeal of Stacy and Cathy, It was evident that all loved working with children and helping them grow in their faith.
Thank you over and over again to all the volunteers for the awesome, exciting time you provided during that week. The Bible Themes, and clever Stations set up were creative centers of fun and faith, with good music, good games, good crafts, good movies, good stories, good praying, and good snacks! All the bayou crews discovered that God is powerful and present and that He loves each and every one of us very much! Thanks also to all who donated in any way to the success of the VBS. God bless everyone.
Saints in every vocation quest…
Kudos to those who found St. Lawrence to be the one! The winners - John & Joann Vance, Mary Minnich, Pat & Regina Lomasney, Pat Johnston and Delores Stone - the prizes are mounting! So now, who is the one whom Pope Pius XI named as the universal patron of orphans and abandoned children? He was ordained a priest in 1518.
Peace and prayerful love to all,

Pastor's Message
The Gospel of John continues to remind us of the sacrifice Christ made for us by the shedding of his blood on the cross. Jesus reconciled and mediated the relationship torn between God and man by surrendering himself as the Paschal Lamb. Our Lord was obedient to the Father and accepted death so we could have life eternal. But his gift did not end on the cross for he gave us a memorial of his sacrifice through the reception of his body and his blood. The past few weeks in our scripture passages we have heard about food and not so much drink. This week the theme pertaining to the readings focus on the drink which we will partake in one day.
Christ's blood is given to us at the Eucharistic celebration because Jesus wanted us to taste of the meal that will be shared at the eternal banquet. The drink that gives us life is different than the drink that makes us the life of the party. There is a great distinction between the two. For one, the drink that we may partake in at a social gathering or party can have different types of impacts on us. It can make us happy or sad; very numb or very sensitive; angry or calm. Alcohol can have a different type of impact on people. Each person reacts in their own way when consuming “spirited drinks”. That is why St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians is a great warning to us. Consumption of too much alcohol can lead us into great sin which can have lasting impacts on the lives of many. St. Paul wants the Holy Spirit to guide us in life and not the spirits of the alcohol to lead us.
This is the great distinction because Christ's blood received through the form of wine and the wine itself. When we receive the blood of Jesus, we enable ourselves in becoming one with the Savior. He not only shares his passion with us but he gives of his blood so that we can truly have life with him. That is what makes our bond with Jesus so perfect because Christ sprinkles the covenant with his own flesh and blood. Although we receive Christ in the form of wine it is truly his blood that we are partaking in. Many Christians, especially Catholics, think that what we receive in the Eucharistic celebration is more symbolic than the real presence of Jesus. Maybe that is why we have so many fallen away Catholics who continually question their faith because they are not allowing the Holy Spirit to direct them in life. That is why St. Paul has right even today: “Make the most of the present opportunity, for these are evil days.”
The Holy Spirit, which is another gift from God, directs us constantly to make the most out of the opportunity in receiving the blood of the savior to strengthen and encourage us during these tough times. For it is Christ and only Christ who can save us from the power of the Evil One.
I pray that you have a blessed week and know that I am praying for you as continue to travel during these Summer Days!
Fr. Jim

Young Adult and Campus Ministry
Young adults from the across the Archdiocese of Detroit are invited to “Prayer and Scripture,” the 2nd annual Young Adult Scripture Symposium, to be held next Saturday, August 22, at Transfiguration Parish in Southfield.
Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal fund the Office for Young Adult and Campus Ministry, which ministers to young adults in their late teens, 20s and 30s, both married and single, through events like this daylong conference.
“Prayer and Scripture” will focus on how to integrate the reading of Scripture into daily prayer life. The day will also include workshops, Eucharistic Holy Hour and Reconciliation. The cost of $10 includes lunch.

A Note From The Principal
With all of the storms we have been having over the past week, I have thought a lot about the importance of storms. While they may be scary for some, they are thrilling for others. While they do damage, they also bring growth by removing old trees and providing much needed rain. Our lives can often feel stormy, and as our surroundings change, we work to weather the 'storms' and make good use of their many benefits.
As the world around us changes, I urge you to make a change in your life by enrolling your children at Holy Cross Catholic School. We provide a quality academic program with the added benefit of being immersed in our faith. We consider parents our partners in education, and work together to meet all of YOUR children's needs. Please call our office at 810-765-3591 to learn more about our programs or be connected with one of our many families who will be happy to share their experiences with you. We are also hosting an open house for both current and new families next Sunday, August 23rd from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Please come and meet our teachers and our families and see why Holy Cross is right for you.
As your youngest Crusaders are working on potty training, please consider using preschool as a helpful tool. So many little ones want to go to school like their older siblings and cousins. What a better way to accomplish this goal while building an educational foundation?
One reason that many families do not take advantage of Catholic education is they feel that they can't afford the tuition. I would love it if we could offer a tuition-free education for the students of our parish; that is not something we are able to do. There are ways, however, to make tuition affordable for your family. One major tool we have to assist in tuition reduction is ABSOLUTELY FREE! That tool is SCRIP. Please call the school office, or stop in the SCRIP office, which is located in the school building in the religious education office, for more information.
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund
Sharing the Gospel
During Mass the priest changes the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. He uses the same words that Jesus did at the Last Supper. "This is my body. This is my blood." When you receive the holy Eucharist, Jesus lives inside you. You live in Jesus. His being with you will help you say, "No," to evil and "Yes," to good.
Prayer
Lord, bless all that I eat and drink so that I may follow you forever. Amen
Something to Draw
Draw yourself and your family at a table bowing your heads for the blessing.
Mission for the Week
I will clean my room without complaining.

What Religion Means to Me
Last year the 6th grade Religion Education class was asked to write a paragraph of What Religion Means to Me. Following comes from Luke Kuecken.
“Religion means to me getting to god and your community and volunteering for others in your free time-helping time. A strong man stands up for himself a stronger man stands up for other's not just himself. A stronger man will be the one. You should donate what you have money, blood, etc…A strong man is really not a strong man if he has money. He is really strong if he donates some money. Say you want to get some candy and you see a donation table, don't get the candy, and donate the $5. We should take part in your community. Help is what a lot of people need. Also, some of your time - it's nice to be nice. So take part. Hope caring time is what cancer people need. If god sees a lot of people giving time and saying prayers and giving hope and caring, he will give a miracle. I bet one person has cancer in Marine City and only ¼ of the city not caring so that means one person I know had ¾ of the city who cared. It was cured. You know what happened a Miracle happened, so care be the stronger man not just a strong man.”
Vacation Bible School 2009
God Sightings
As we traveled thru the bayou during vacation bible school we witnessed many God Sightings. It started with all the generous donations from our parish members. We received donations from two businesses: carpet tubes from Custom Floor Coverings and 50 large cardboard boxes from Cargill Salt. Next we saw many volunteers build, paint, create and assemble decorations to turn Holy Cross gym and school into a crocodile dock bayou. We then saw God again as 68 fearless kids arrived for an exciting adventure, discovering God's presence, power, love, life, and care along with over 33 volunteers!
Along the way we also saw God Sightings in the form of Father Lopez who offered his support and prayers, Parish Secretaries who assisted in making copies, taking registrations, gathering donated items, answering questions and putting items in the bulletin and the Holy Cross janitorial staff who tolerated our many messes. We are very grateful for all who helped make VBS 2009 a success and look forward to next year's VBS, to be held the end of July. May you all enjoy the many God sightings in your life.
