Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
In Christ is our strength;
Let us give thanks and praise!
There's a story told of a T.V. program that sent a team out into the streets to ask people to
say in two minutes whatever they wanted to say for all to hear. Of the close to thirty interviewed,
one common feature sprung up - every one without a single exception - made use of the two minutes
to voice a complaint. They were all different in age, background, education, occupation, but they all
complained. Nobody thought, of saying, or took the two minutes to say what is right with the world,
their town, parish, or person.
It's also been said that there are two kinds of people in the world - ducks and eagles: the
ducks are always quacking, quarreling, complaining, blaming others for their plight, finding every
reason why things can't and won't work. Then there are the eagles. The eagles soar above the
crowd and go for it.
Isn't it noticeable in our society today, that many seem to thrive on grievances rather than
praise for the goodness in creation that God Himself is on record in Genesis saying He was pleased
with and found good, very good?
Today's scripture is about God's kindness to us, His goodness, even in the smallest of
ways. Yet, it seems there was a complaint box around. The people murmured about Jesus. Elijah
says he's had enough. Paul reminds us to not grieve the Holy Spirit by anger or malice. In God's
universe, there should be no place for constant grumbling or complaining. Life's many options
compete for our priority, just like the well-stocked shelves of a grocery. To have any control over our
lives or attitudes, we must decide what we give ourselves to. Jesus tells us: “I am the bread of
Life…whoever eats this bread will live forever...and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of
the world.” Jesus gave us and continues to give us the Eucharist, His very Self in such a way as to
be one with us and give us fullness of life. We are called again to faith, living faith in Jesus. A great
contemplative, Fr. LaPuente, once said: “I do not understand how a person who has true faith in God
can ever be worried, anxious or agitated about anything, for all is in the hands of a provident God who
would order things wisely and lovingly for his greater good.” Faith is God's view of things!
Jubilee…a time of remembering, sharing, giving thanks, a celebration of God's graciousness and love
in our lives! All good wishes to Sr. Geraldine, for 60 years of living in faith as a Sister of St. Joseph.
She trusted the God who called her, and began the journey. Faith doesn't ask for guarantees or
advance information. We all have come to our vocation in life with a similar experience in faith. We
couldn't guess the future that awaited us. The act of faith, which Jesus calls us to deepen, is a
strong support and a great compliment to our God. In God's own time and God's own way, His
promise is fulfilled.
Saints in every vocation quest…
Congrats to Mary Endres & Dr. Michael Jenuwine for naming St. Camillus deLellis! The
medal I wear was a gift from a precious great-niece whose name is Margaret Camille!
Now, who was a deacon in the early Church who valued the poor and said of them: “These
are the treasure of the Church.”?
God bless you abundantly this week,

Pastor's Message
Sometimes in life we forget the goodness of the Lord. When things do not go our way or to
our liking we sometimes confuse that with God punishing us or ignoring us. The reality is that God
will say NO to us on occasions. However, we cannot forget that God does provide, especially in
those times when it seems hopeless or bleak. Scripture reminds us of God's compassion with the
story of Elijah and the food and water needed for his journey. Elijah wanted to give up but God
needed him for important tasks that would remind the people that the Lord did not abandon His
people. It is no different today. God has not abandoned us and He will provide for the needs of His
children. However, we must help in God's plan by giving of ourselves a little more, especially to the
poor in spirit. We can assist others by giving food, clothing or cash donations to our St. Vincent de
Paul program. Or we can just remember that an extra prayer or two never hurts!
A few reminders to pass along: first, August 15th, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
Mary is NOT a holy day of obligation this year. The holyday obligation is suspended when the
solemnity falls on Saturday or Monday. We will not be having a Mass in our Lady's honor but that
does not mean we cannot have a special moment to give thanks to Our Blessed Mother for her
example of faith and perseverance. I know that the Assumption is a day that reminds us of the
reward that awaits us. Mary is rewarded by God for her good works and her “Yes” to God's plan of
salvation. Mary is assumed body and soul to heaven. She does not have to suffer the corruption of
the body because God cannot allow the tabernacle for His Son to go through any form of corruption.
God blesses the obedient servants and gives them as our example in our walk in life.
The second reminder is that the painters from Detroit Spectrum have begun the steeple
paint project at Holy Cross. I was fortunate enough to meet the crew, they took me up to the bell
tower to show me what their work would entail. It is a difficult task but I have the confidence in their
abilities and trust that they will give us a good finished product. I kind of surprised myself by going up
to the bell tower because I do not like heights. It was such a great experience, I am glad that they
took up there to see not only the view, but how detailed their efforts will be in painting the inside and
outside of our steeples. But there is no way I am making a return visit up there!
Finally, because of the departure of Gwen Steele and because it has been recommended
by the Archdiocese to cut back on our office hours to alleviate some of our deficit situation we will
have new office hours at our Algonac and Marine City sites while Harsens Island hours will remain
the same. In Algonac we will be open on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Marine
City will be open Monday thru Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The office will be closed between 1
-2 p.m. for lunch. There will be
no more weekend hours. These new office hours will take effect on Monday August 24th. Prior to this
new schedule the office will be closed the week of the 17th to enable the staff to participate in a staff
in-service and retreat. We will monitor the phones and respond to any parish emergency.
I know that this will be an adjustment in the beginning but we will be in line with other
parishes in the Archdiocese while helping to alleviate the deficit situation we are currently
experiencing.
My prayers to all for a good and blessed week!
Fr. Jim

An estimated 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS in the world today. Your gifts to the
Catholic Services Appeal allow the Archdiocese of Detroit to minister to those affected by the
disease through the AIDS Ministry Forum, a volunteer board that embraces and promotes the direct
service of Catholics who are involved in ministry with people with AIDS, their families and friends.
The AIDS Ministry Forum increases people's knowledge of HIV/AIDS through awareness
presentations and provides confidential bereavement and spiritual counseling. The forum is part of the
Department of Parish Life and Services.

A Note From The Principal
Change is good! While sometimes I have to look to find the truth in this statement, I believe that
change happens for a reason. There are so many changes happening in the physical communities
where our parish and school reside. The population is changing, as is the economy. The local
public school districts have each closed one elementary school. However, Holy Cross is OPEN and
here to meet your educational needs. We would like to play a part in educating your children. What
better time to make a fresh start! Please call the school office or stop in to learn more about how we
can become partners in education.
Plans are well underway for our Back-to-School Open House, which will be held from
10:00AM-2:00PM on Sunday, August 23rd. This event provides two great opportunities: our current
families can meet their teachers and learn more about the upcoming year, and NEW families can
learn more about what Holy Cross is ready to offer their children. I encourage all of our current
families to come and bring another family who may be interested in joining our school community.
Holy Cross Preschool is also accepting new students for the upcoming school year. If
your child wishes he or she could go to school with the other kids, now is your chance. For more
information, please stop in or give us a call.
The SCRIP program is still going strong during these summer months. I would like to
thank the many parents who make this program run and all who support it. If you haven't started
using SCRIP, what are you waiting for?

Sharing the Gospel
In the Old Testament God sent manna from the sky to Moses and the Israelites. It was like
small pancakes that covered the desert floor. Then God sent his only Son to die on the cross for us.
The body of Jesus is the life-giving bread that he lovingly gave to the world. Because he died on the
cross for us, we have everlasting life with God in heaven.
Prayer
Lord, I am truly sorry for all the things I have done that hurt you.
Amen
Something to Draw
Draw Jesus welcoming you inside the gates of heaven.
Mission for the Week
Share a can of food, a bag of sugar, and powdered milk with the hungry.

Parish Prayer For Vocations News
“Every one of us is called by the Lord;
The important thing is to know how
To answer His call.”
Blessed John XXIII
Each week parishioners are invited to have the privilege of taking home the
PARISH BOOK OF VOCATION PRAYER with a crucifix. Individuals and families from all three
parish sites have had the experience of setting aside a brief “prayer-time”, using the resources
offered in the manual. It really is quite simple and is a good opportunity to take maybe three minutes
to stop our busy lives to be aware of God's desire, waiting to hear from us. They have also been
writing comments about the week for others to appreciate.
At present, this opportunity is available at the 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 10:30
a.m. Mass. If you are interested in taking part, please just come up when the presider at the Liturgy
makes the announcement at the end of the Mass. It is appreciated if the book and crucifix be
returned each Thursday directly to the parish office so that it is available for the following Sunday.
We hope YOU will be the next to be the one who shares in this parish prayer endeavor.
Following are some recent comments from those who have participated:
“We liked to do the prayers in the book.” John
“It was a wonderful prayer filled moment to unite our prayers with those of others and the
whole Church to ask God to bless us with more workers in His vineyard. Thank you for the privilege.”
Herb and Dorothy Dennis
“We should be thankful for all Fr. Jim and Fr. Matt and all the other priests do for us.
Without them we wouldn't have such a great church. I enjoy helping them as an altar server and pray
they continue to help me to have stronger faith.” Alex May
“We are proud and honored to be part of this program. We will continue to pray for
vocations in our parish and the entire world so that Our Lord will inspire those who seek Him in this
special way.” Jim and Connie Seeley
“My husband said it made him more aware that a vocation is not just a term used for the
religious life, but for all of us determining the paths we take in life. It was great to get the whole
family involved (mom, dad, 8, 6, and 4 year old). We also explained what the prayers meant, which
helped us adults really think about what we were praying. We look forward to doing it again!

Faith in Schools
When we see the cross on the classroom wall,
may we always remember the reason
our schools of faith exist.
For Christ died upon the cross,
not for academic excellence,
and not for a dress code;
not for well-written essays,
or for correctly added math problems.
Christ died upon the cross for our salvation,
and as a model of love for us to follow.
May we remember while learning
or teaching, that the most important
thing we can learn or teach
is not in our textbooks,
but instead, is our faith in Christ himself.
Amen.
