Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
Come, let us give thanks to the Lord;
For His love endures forever!
“Though they see with their eyes and hear with their ears, they neither perceive nor understand…..” (John 12:36-b-43; Isaiah 6:9-10). As much as Jesus tries in today's Gospel, the crowd around Him, and perhaps, even we ourselves, preoccupied with other everyday concerns, let His message go over our heads and fail to hear with the inner ear of our heart, what Jesus is saying. His words seem to pass us by and we miss the obvious. Faith, trust in Jesus, two important necessities for us who gather at the Table of the Eucharist and hear the message from John 6:24-35 today.
Both faith and understanding are gifts of the Holy Spirit that enable us to hear God's Word with clarity, and come to understand, with faith, trust and reverence, His truth. Jesus invites us to refocus our attention and believe in Him and trust Him to fill us with His grace, His truth, His Body and Blood in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Yes, this mystery of faith may be beyond our grasp, but it is not beyond the openness of our hearts and minds to humbly receive and believe. Jesus speaks a profound statement: “I am the Bread of Life,” and offers each of us the gift of Himself, the gift of complete and eternal fulfillment. “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”(v.29) “Whoever believes in Me has real life, eternal life. I am the Bread of Life.” (John 6:51) Believing in Jesus is faith, and faith is highlighted ninety-eight times in John's Gospel, most often as a verb, an experience of action. Where then, are you in faith? What do you most hunger and thirst for in life?
Jesus sustains us this moment, in this place, in this present experience, in the Eucharist. The people in today's Gospel asked a lot of questions - very human questions which many of us still ask today. How is Jesus present in your life? As Thomas Merton once said: “Our glory and our hope - we are the body of Christ. Christ loves us. Isn't that enough for us? But we do not really believe it. Be content. We are the Body of Christ. We have found Him. He has found us. We are in Him. He is in us. There is nothing further to look for, except the deepening of this life we already possess. Be content. Our faith is in God. To believe is the freedom to trust in Him alone and to rely on Him in everything that concerns us.”
Saints in every vocation quest returns next week……Last week's saint was St. Camillus deLellis! The name I received when I professed religious vows was Sister Camille - thus my special patron, St. Camillus deLellis, whose feast is on July 18th, became a valuable intercessor.
May the Lord bless you abundantly in His love throughout this week.

Pastor's Message
As the Gospel of St. John continues, we hear Jesus explain that “he is the bread of life.” Jesus' body and blood is not something perishable like any other food. His body comes in the form of bread but it is still the life of our Lord! That is why it is important on how we prepare ourselves in the reception of our Savior. That is why we fast an hour before Mass so that we empty ourselves and allow nothing to mix with the communion we receive. It is also why we ask that one does not chew gum during the Mass or receive the Eucharist while chewing gum because we are not supposed the mix the two. Think of it like this, suppose you chew your gum and receive the body of Christ at the same time. There is a possibility of having particles of the Eucharist attached to that piece of gum. When you lose the flavor of the gum you toss it out. However, wouldn't you be tossing a part of Christ out with the piece of gum? It is an extreme example but in order to make a point clear, you make a strong case for your view. I know some would disagree with this example but this is how strong I feel on guarding and protecting the Body of Christ.
Why do you think we purify our vessels and clean our linens so thoroughly? We do not want to desecrate the Lord for this is the food that came down from Heaven to give life to the whole world. That is why there are certain steps to the cleaning of our linen. Let me give an example from when I had the duty of cleaning our linen during pilgrimage. I had to soak the purificator for 24 hours in a bowl of water; afterwards the water would be emptied into something living like grass or a flower pot. Then I could wash the linens with other clothes. There are reasons why things are done a certain way and it is to avoid the desecration of Jesus.
I mention this because we, as a Church, need little reminders on how to receive, clean and even adore the Body of Jesus. We should be respectful of Christ at all times and not when we feel like it. We are forgetting at times the rules in treating our King. That is why little reminders are important to be sent to the people. It is not a judgment or an accusation. Rather, it is a message to all that those who hunger and thirst for the Lord will never be turned away. But as our Lord shows us honor and respect, we need to return that back to Him.
In closing, we have some arrival news and departure news. There will be some painters arriving within the next few weeks to paint the steeples at Holy Cross and the work should be complete by Labor Day. I mention this because there will be areas that might be closed off while the work is being done. My understanding is that the painters will be on machine lifts and not scaffolding. I will be watching safely on the ground and not in the air.
Finally, I close by saying thank you to Gwen Steele, who has been at Our Lady on the River for a little over a year and a half filling in the duties of the secretary at the Algonac site. Gwen has decided to go back to college and work on her degree. Although Gwen made a great contribution to our staff and our parish, she needs to do what is best for herself and her family. We ask God to bless her and her future endeavors. So please keep Gwen in your prayers as she tackles the rigors of college life!
Have a blessed week,
Fr. Jim

Sharing the Gospel
Just one day earlier, Jesus multiplied five loaves of bread and two fish to feed over five thousand people. In today's Gospel, some of those people came looking for Jesus, hoping to get another free lunch. They didn't understand that Jesus wants all people to believe in him. Through faith in Jesus, you can live forever. In heaven you will never be hungry or thirsty again.
Prayer
God, fill me up with love for Jesus.
Something to Draw
Draw Jesus holding your hand in heaven, next to a pretty river.
Mission for the Week
If you believe in Jesus, you can look forward to heaven one day. Read Revelation 21:3-7 with your family. Heaven will be wonderful!

FR. MATT'S MATTERS
GAINS, LOSSES, QUALITY AND QUANTITY IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, PART 2
The Roman Catholic Church has, in its self-identified membership, quite a diversity of Catholic Christians (and I'm not referring to the hundreds of countries and languages of worldwide Catholicism). Some people will identify themselves as Catholics knowing only that they were baptized Catholic during their early childhood, and some I.D. themselves by their intense, life long, direct personal and spiritual involvement in the Church's life. The majority of us are somewhere in between the two examples above.
One of the current “mega-trends” in our Church, according to the researcher I named before, John Allen, is the expanding roles of non-clerics, or the 'lay faithful'. Today, Catholics who are not ordained deacons or priests, are taking role responsibilities in diocesan and parish life in ways our grandparents had not known. In some countries this trend/opportunity is more prevalent than in the USA. Along with expanded diocesan and parish involvement, are the phenomena of specific spirituality groups (e.g. the charismatic renewal), lay missionaries, religious order membership for lay/married Catholics, more lay theologians, such things as “the Jesuit Volunteer Corps”, and activist lay Catholic evangelists who seek creative ways to promote our faith. Some of this is in response to the new numbers success of Evangelical/Pentecostal protestant Christians in areas like Latin America, where a noticeable percentage of Catholics join their denominations.
The word 'Protestant' is an umbrella term which originally named the Catholics who “protested” some significant matters in the Church and ultimately divided into their own ecclesial groupings. In their own history they continue to 'protest' one another and further divide into 'the church of the church of the church of…' We, for our part, do ourselves no long term favors when some of us continue ideological and strident inter-church warfare about certain church matters that in the scope of eternity mean little or nothing. The bad example set may also turn-off some potential quality gains in our Church membership.
Baptism and Eucharist are the sacramental foundations of the Catholic Christian life. As I mentioned last time, if we were, we are no longer baptizing babies so that if they die when still young children they will go to Heaven. Pope Benedict XVI has made clear that the Church's faith contains no 'limbo' (let alone hell) for young children who have died. So why baptize infants? On the basis of the faith and commitment of the Catholic parent(s), that they accept, believe and will set the example and give the teaching of our faith necessary for justifying the baptism of 'an unable to decide for him/herself' child. What the Church is trying to minimize are the number of Catholic family generations whose lifelong actual Church involvement is (to use some slang) basically a 'carry them, marry them and bury them' scenario.
Obviously, the role of the Pope and bishops is to help enhance the quality and not just the quantity of Catholics. Pope Benedict XVI seems to show some signs that he is particularly concerned that the Catholics of the near future are well formed in the full scope of being a Catholic, and this has implications for what are considered gains and losses, and what quality is versus quantity (as a mere numbers game) of Christians living in the body and soul destroying aspects of the world. More is forthcoming on the Pope, baptism, and some of the what and why of church law.
In Jesus,
Fr. Matt Ellis.

Words for Reflection
Only if I serve my neighbor can my eyes be opened to what God does for me and how much he loves me. The saints, as in the example of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, constantly renewed their capacity for love from their meeting with the Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Love of God and love of neighbor are inseparable. Both come from God who has loved us first. True love which comes from God helps us to transcend our divisions and moves us toward unity until in the end God is “all in all.” Excerpt from Encyclical Letter, “Deus Caritas Est” (God Is Love)

If those that have not responded as of yet, would, we could easily make our goal and have extra transferred back to our parish. Please support your parish. Any amount will be appreciated. You might consider using the Pledge Method, this requires only a $10 initial contribution and nine monthly pledge payments of $10 each. A Note From The Principal
Happy Summer! As you and your families enjoy the fun of summer, we are finishing our preparations for the beginning of the school year. The school office is now open from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you need to see us outside of those times, we would be happy to make an appointment for you.
I would like to thank our families who were so willing to share their “Crusader Pride” during the month of July. I would be pleased to publish more of these thoughts, not only from our current families, but from past families and alumni. Please send me your thoughts and memories at principal@holycrossonline.net or to the school office, and I will share them with our parish community.
I would like to be able to add YOUR family to our school family! If you would like to know how a quality Holy Cross Catholic School education can benefit your child, please feel free to call the school office at 810- 765-3591 or email me at principal@holycrossonline.net for a personal appointment. I would be happy to share the strengths of our educational opportunities with you.
In speaking of educational opportunities, Holy Cross Catholic School is able to offer small lower-elementary class sizes. We also offer preschool for three- and four-year-old children. If you would like to see your child grow both academically and spiritually, please consider becoming a part of our school family. In this time of changing and challenging economics, it is rare to find small elementary class sizes. We would love to make you a part of our growing family.
One reason that many families do not take advantage of Catholic education is they feel that they can't afford the tuition. I would love it if we could offer a tuition-free education for the students of our parish; that is not something that we are able to do. There are ways, however, to make tuition affordable for your family. One major tool we have to assist in tuition reduction is ABSOLUTELY FREE! That tool is SCRIP. Please call the school office, or stop in the SCRIP office, which is located in the school building in the religious education office, for more information.

Symptoms of Bladder Cancer
The good news is that bladder cancer is highly treatable when diagnosed early. Symptoms may include blood in the urine, a change in bladder habits (such as an inability to urinate despite an urge to do so) or an increased frequency, abdominal pain and back pain. Those at a greater risk are adults over age 60. Exposure to certain chemicals and smoking is associated with bladder cancer. Follow up with your physician if you experience any of the symptoms identified.

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Twenty years ago, Marianne Wilson saw a need; thousands of people with critical illnesses were going hungry in her area of Southern California, and she just wasn't going to stand for it. She began cooking healthy meals and delivering them to men, women and children dying from HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other diseases at no cost to the recipients. Today, the organization is known as Project Angel Food, and every year produces over 400,000 meals and delivers them to more than 1,600 people. On its Web site, it says, "We act out of a sense of urgency because hunger and illness do not wait."
It had been barely twenty-four hours since the miracle of the loaves and fishes; thousands had found nourishment. Jesus and his disciples had crossed the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum, and still many in the crowd from the day before found him, wanting another miracle. But Jesus offered them and us a greater miracle; if we are only to believe in the Son of God, we will never hunger again. Our faith is our work; this work will be generously rewarded.
In the Lord's Prayer we pray "Give us this day our daily bread." Fully understanding today's Gospel reading from John enables us to comprehend the dual meaning of this petition: our bodies will hunger, please provide nourishment, and our souls hunger, please provide through our faith the bread of life that is faith in Jesus Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that "the drama of hunger in the world calls Christians who pray sincerely to exercise responsibility toward their brethren, both in their personal behavior and in their solidarity with the human family" (CCC 2831).
