Pastor's Message
St. John's Gospel passage has Jesus feeding a large gathering of people with only five loaves of bread and two dried fish. Jesus' performed miracle reminds the
people of the miracle performed by Moses in the desert. Moses called upon God to feed the people crying out and God responded by giving them manna. The manna would
be enough to fill their appetites. Like Moses, Jesus cries out to His Father and gives thanks for what he has and asks that the people's needs be filled. All are fed! Jesus
was moved by their desire to be fed physically and spiritually so Jesus opened up his heart and satisfied the people with his compassion and with his love.
Although there are similarities between Jesus and Moses and the feeding of the people, there is a great distinction between the two. What Moses gave to the
people filled their physical needs so that can build up their bodies. What Jesus gave and what he continues to give us fills not only a physical need but it also nurtures the
soul of the individual. Moses gave the people a food that was temporary; Jesus gives us a food that is eternal. That is the difference, Jesus desires to feed us for eternity and
not temporally. And he does so with open hands and an open heart.
As we continue to strive towards meeting our CSA target goal, we have received some news from the Archdiocese in which our goal has been lowered. When our
goal was presented to us, I inquired about seeking some relief from that target of $110,000.00. My letter was clear that we are still in the transitional stages of our merger
and that finances in our area are very tough right now. I was very specific as to why our parish needed this relief and asked for their assistance. The Archdiocese responded
by giving us a new target goal of $ 99,000.00. I am grateful for their help in lowering the goal and I hope that more people will try to give what they can in reaching this new
objective. So many have given what they can from their pockets and to all I am grateful. I am asking to those who have not responded that if you could find it in your hearts
to give some contribution towards CSA it will help us reach our parish goal without having us take out of our operating budget. We are already struggling to meet our
operating budget. I would hate to take from our budget to meet the CSA intention. But that is what we will do if we come up short.
Finally, two thank you notes that I would like to pass along. First, my thanks to all who have responded to Sr. Geraldine's party which is being held on August 9th.
It is good that we celebrate her 60 years of dedicated service to our Church. She is a fine example of commitment and selflessness. So please plan on joining in on the
festivities. And finally, my Dad and my family would like to thank you for all the prayers and support you have blessed our family with over the past few months. Dad is
getting stronger each day and wants to continue to do what God asks of him. Dad has been humbled by all the generosity that has been showered upon him and he is
eternally grateful. I too share in his sentiments and you do not realize how humbled I am as your pastor.
Have a Blessed Week!

Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
God blesses us abundantly,
Let us give thanks and praise!
As we begin the sixth chapter of John's gospel, we find Jesus & the disciples on a hilltop surrounded by what could have easily been a stadium full of people,
enthusiastic and hungry, physically and spiritually. Jesus satisfied their hungers. Jesus promises never to leave us hungry or thirsty. Remember the Samaritan woman?
Jesus told her: “Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst - not ever. The water I give will be a spring within - bringing forth fountains of endless life” (John 4:13) In
next week's scripture, Jesus tells the crowd: “I am the Bread of Life.” And today, after using the child's offering of all he had, and bringing abundance from them, Jesus
advises: “Don't waste your energy striving for perishable food. Work for the food that nourishes your lasting life!” Over the next weeks, we'll be asked by God's word to reflect
on: What are you hungry for? What are you looking for?
Good questions indeed, since perhaps you've notice we're living in a world that's craving something new to satisfy our needs; financial security, physical well-being,
peaceful relationships and more. The five loaves and two fish of the gospel story can't compare in our day, The chance to load up on life's seeming necessities in bulk at
bargain prices, thinking life is better when you buy more or have more is ever before us. Ultimately, Jesus does offer the more, but if we're shopping for fulfillment, we can't
do it like we shop for groceries.
When we are fed and filled by Jesus, we will never be on empty. Life will still give us challenges and hurdles, yet if we keep the Lord at the center, offering all we
are, we will receive the gift of lasting peace and know God's abundance in His faithfulness, compassion and loving nourishment in our lives. The center of all spiritual life is
Jesus. Jesus has given us the awesome gift of Eucharist, His Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity to fulfill us, sustain us, and be our very Food of life, the full reality of our
faith. The most privileged place we will ever find fulfillment in life and have our hungers and thirst satisfied, in Jesus, is in the Eucharist. Each time we return home from
Sunday Mass having proclaimed the Mystery of our faith, we are assured of God's constant, unconditional love and strengthening care in all aspects of our lives, in every
moment of every day!
Saints in every vocation quest continues…….
With Patricia Johnston, Patrick & Regina Lomasney, Mary Minnich, & John & Joann Vance discovering that St. James was the answer of last week's quest. For
this week, we present a saint who was my patron when I was known as a young Sister by another name. He still is a special patron saint, and I wear a medal of his image.
He served in the military before his conversion. He was ordained to the priesthood in the 16th century, and devoted his life to the care of the sick. Good searching to you!
Prayerful blessings to you and your family….

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus seemed to be surrounded by crowds a lot, didn't he? That's because no matter where he went, he helped people, he healed them, and he taught them about
God. In today's Gospel reading, one crowd was following Jesus all day, and now they were getting hungry for dinner. Instead of sending them back home, Jesus showed
everybody's God's amazing power. Jesus took a boy's lunch and made more than enough food for everybody to eat.
Prayer
Dear God, help me always to remember that you have the power to give us more than we need. Amen.
Something to Draw
Draw a picture of two fish and five loaves of bread.
Mission for the Week
The boy in today's Gospel shared his lunch. You can share food, too. Bring boxed and canned food to a food pantry in your neighborhood, and ask God to bless the people
who eat it.

Why we like Holy Cross
My name is Allen Chaltron. My wife Kim and I made a decision two years ago to transfer our two children, Cale (7th grade) and Calista (5th grade) from St.
Augustine's school in Richmond to Holy Cross. This was probably one of the hardest decisions we have had to make regarding our children's education, but one we are glad
we made.
From the time our children were born, Kim and I were committed to providing a Catholic, faith based education for our children. As well, we also are committed to
our children attending Cardinal Mooney.
As we are from the Richmond area, we elected to enroll the children at St. Augustine's Catholic School. As time passed it became apparent that few children from
St. Augustine come to Cardinal Mooney after finishing the 8th grade. As our children grew older, this became more of a concern for us. We didn't want them to spend all
those years building friendships and not have them move along with them to high school. That's when Kim and I started to talk seriously about moving the children to Holy
Cross.
In the spring of 2007 we attended the Holy Cross open house. We toured the school and spoke to the teachers and administration. We came back for a one on
one with the principal and the children shadowed their respective classes for a day. After many a late night discussion, worry and some tears our decision was made, the
children would start at Holy Cross in the 2007~2008 school year.
Holy Cross first and foremost provides the faith-based education that we wanted for our children. Holy Cross provides challenging academics that prepare our
students for a smooth and successful transition to Cardinal Mooney. Holy Cross has a dedicated administration and staff who are always open and available to discuss your
child's performance and any concerns you may have. Holy Cross has a full offering of sports that encourage everyone to participate no matter the skill level.
One of the biggest reasons why we like Holy Cross is the welcome we received when we came and the continued sense of belonging. The feeling we had after
joining Holy Cross was likened to that of walking into a friend's home, “Welcome, how are you, glad to see you, glad you're here.” You are welcomed to participate, join in
and be involved. That was something we hadn't felt before.
In closing I would like to encourage other school parents and parishioners to spread the word about the good things Holy Cross has to offer. Encourage those who
are considering Holy Cross to do the same as Kim and I did, come in, talk to the administration and teachers. Speak to some parents, have your child shadow their class.
Even if you're not sure if you can afford it in these difficult economic times, financial support may be available.
If you want a great faith based education that will prepare your child for the future, please seriously consider Holy Cross. I think you'll be glad you did.
Sincerely
Al and Kim Chaltron
WEEKLY PARISH PRAYER FOR
VOCATIONS COMMENTS
It was an honor to have the crucifix and prayer manual in our home. We all need to pray for all vocations and have the Holy Spirit guide us.
Mike and Chris Page
We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Parish prayer for vocations. It was a very uplifting experience. We felt truly blessed.
Ron and Charlene Smith
If you would like to take home the parish crucifix and prayer manual for a week of at-home prayer for vocations, please do!
At the end of the 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. weekend Mass announcements, the celebrant of the Mass will offer the opportunity to anyone interested.
Hope you'll give it a try.
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those
who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted.
- Jn 6:9, 11
Exposition of Blessed Sacrament
Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held for one hour following Mass as follows:
every Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at St. Catherine
the first Tuesday (August 4th) following the
7:30 a.m. Mass at St. Catherine
and
the first Friday (August 7th) following the
9:00 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross
Benediction and closing will follow after one hour of adoration. Support of this devotion is vital.
What is the R.C.I.A.?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for adults, (R.C.I.A.), is an instruction and conversion process for welcoming newcomers or returning baptized Catholics who want to learn
about the Catholic faith to full communion in the Roman Catholic Church.
Who should attend?
Those not yet baptized, and those seeking information about becoming Catholic. Those baptized in another Christian denomination who desire full communion and
membership in the Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation and wish to update their faith knowledge and personal spiritual
growth.
Do I have to commit to the entire 2009-2010 year?
Not yet! The inquiry/pre-catechumenate series phase is designed to provide basic information and experience with prayer and Catholic practice, so that one can
make a decision to continue or decide that this is not the right time in their life. No one is ever pressured to proceed through the process, as that decision is between each
person and God.
How do I become a participant?
If you would like more information or be included in the Fall Inquiry Sessions, please call the parish office, or mention your desire to Fr. Jim, Fr. Matt or Sr. Mary
Ann. It would also help to fill out the form below and return it in the offering basket or to the parish office.
Come, we hope to see YOU.

Approximately two of every three Americans are overweight. Excess weight raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers. Increased stress and lack
of adequate sleep in addition to lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet lend to increased weight. Losing just a small amount of weight, about 10 % can lead to improvements
in your health. Exercise will not only burn calories but boost your metabolic rate, which will help your body to burn calories faster. Check with your physician before starting
any exercise or diet program.

"One Sows, Another Reaps"
CSA REPORT NUMBER 10
Parish Target for 2009 $99,000
Amount Pledged for 2009 $76,313
% of Target Received 77%
Amount needed to meet goal $22,687
Average Amount of Gift $125
Number of Potential Donors 1765
Number of Replies (including “zeros”) 612
% of Participation 35%
As Fr. Jim stated and is reflected above our CSA goal has been reduced to $99,000. With only 35% of our registered families responding so far, we are still very
short of this lowered goal. We realize times are hard for many and appreciate the sacrifices that have been made to help us reach this goal. If those that have not
responded as of yet, would, we could easily make our goal and have extra transferred back to our parish. Please support your parish. If you have misplaced your pledge
card, just put your gift in an envelope marked “CSA” and we will insure it is properly credited.
Any amount will be appreciated. You might consider using the Pledge Method, this requires only a $10 initial contribution and nine monthly pledge payments of
$10 each. With this method, the Archdiocese will send you a monthly reminder. Of course, you can always make your contribution in one lump sum if you wish! May God
bless you for your generosity!
Jesus is the bread of life who feeds us
continually with his very self.
