Jesus is the Word of Life;
Let us give thanks and praise!

On this 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear St. Mark's version of the call of

disciples as Jesus sends out a frail contingent of followers in teams of two to minister to the

people entrusted to them. Jesus gives them only what they need most: a mission and the

grace to carry it out. All he recommends is that they take a walking stick, a personal goad to

keep them moving when the terrain gets rough or when they get weary. This first-century

church's mission has moved on to our generation, us, ordinary people. Jesus entrusts us with

His gifts and talents and teaches us to use the good news which we have received, reject what

is contrary to the Gospel and carry on His mission. He wills to work through and in each of us

for His glory.
Edwin M. Soukup has compiled what he terms “The Seven Steps to Stagnation”:
		1. We've never done it that way before.
		2. We're not ready for that.
		3. We are doing all right without trying that.
		4. We tried it once before.
		5. We don't have money for that.
		6. That's not our job.
		7. Something like that can't work.
Soukup admits that “there's probably an 8th step, but we've never looked it up before.”

--Quoted by Martin E. Marty in Context, 15 April 85, 5.
The task before us today is to enable, to equip one another so that in our community

of faith all might live as Jesus' servants, giving authentic witness and reaching out to our

neighbor. This is a process and can't come to fruition merely by programming. We are a

community of people gathered together by God's Spirit to proclaim and celebrate Jesus' faithful

presence to our world. What are the priorities we must affirm to remain faithful to the Gospel, to

being sent by the Lord to continue His mission? The discerning of priorities is beyond a matter

of buildings and budget. It involves more fundamentally what we understand to be basic to our

faith.
“The function of faith,” writes Thomas Merton, “is not to reduce mystery to rational

clarity, but to integrate the unknown and the known together in a living whole, in which we are

more and more able to transcend the limitation of our external self….True faith is never merely a

source of spiritual comfort. It may indeed bring peace, but before it does so it must involve us in

struggle.” Faith comes as we find a center for our lives. Jesus Christ is that center. Jesus

sends us, all of us, to bring the good news of the gospel to others.
This is a good week to grow in a sense of not being alone. Today's Gospel reminds

us that Jesus wants us to be dependent on him, not on ourselves. He will provide. He is

always with us, every day, all the time.
Saints in every vocation quest…..
Mary Minnich & John & Joann Vance solved the challenge again! Yes, St. Rose of

Lima is the one! Bravo!
This one's an easy quest…Who is this follower of Jesus, thought of as the first

disciple commissioned to “tell” the Good News of Jesus' resurrection from death? Her feast day

is next week!
May this week be filled with many blessings
for you and your family.

funds.  If you have misplaced your pledge card, just put your gift in an envelope marked “CSA”

and we will insure it is properly credited.
Father Jim has asked each parish family to consider a contribution of at least $100.

Using the Pledge Method, this requires only a $10 initial contribution and nine monthly pledge

payments of $10 each.  With this method, the Archdiocese will send you a monthly reminder

with a return envelope to make it as easy as possible.  Of course, you can always make your

contribution in one lump sum if you wish!  May God bless you for your generosity!

Sharing the Gospel

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus sent his disciples out in pairs. He gave them control over evil spirits. Through

baptism you have control over evil spirits. Jesus is your partner. When you are thinking about

taking a toy that is not yours, you can say, "No." When you want to hit someone, you can say,

"No." When you would like to break the rules at school, you can say, "No. I choose to walk with

Jesus."

Prayer
Lord, give me strength to say, "Yes. I'll obey your commandments."

                          Amen

Something to Draw
Draw you and Jesus walking together saying, "No," to evil and "Yes," to good.

Mission for the Week
Ask God to bless your family so that they will be able to obey God's commandments.

Proud To Be Crusaders

We chose Holy Cross Catholic School as our education partner for many reasons.

First and foremost is the reinforcement they receive at school of the Catholic values we teach at

home. Kids today are inundated by the culture, and the culture very often contradicts what we

believe. It is nearly impossible to find any positive reference to God on television or in the media;

all we see is a world of no right and wrong, and no consequences.
Secondly, I want my kids to be held accountable for their actions. I want them to be

praised when they succeed and corrected when they are wrong. I want them to fail sometimes,

learn something from it, and get right back up to try again. I want them to practice love and

charity, and I want them to learn to fight for what is right. I want them to know and experience

the Love of Jesus and to know that it's alright to pass that Love along.
You can't get these things from a public education. We as adults know that it's OK to

talk about God at school, but a small child or even a middle-schooler is going to feel the

pressure and the intimidation of the culture from the other kids. Holy Cross provides an

environment where the kids are taught a sound curriculum strengthened by God's teachings. We

are blessed to have such a dedicated staff; the principal, the teachers, and the countless

volunteers ensure that the Love of Jesus is evident in every aspect of life at Holy Cross.
We can't shield our kids from everything, but the partnership formed between the home

and Holy Cross creates a firm foundation for them. This will at least give them a fighting chance

to face the realities of life as they become exposed to them, and to become the Catholic leaders

this world so desperately needs.
Sincerely, Gary L. Barr

Words To Live By

By joyfully fulfilling the Father's will in every circumstance of life, after Christ's example

and in the power of the Spirit, the Christian advances on the path of authentic freedom and looks

with hope to the time when he will enter into the “full life” of the heavenly homeland.

Thank God From Deacon Gary
Take Time To Offer Thanks For A Lot Of Reasons

To have so many good friends, Thank God
That my wife was smart enough to know that I was having some sort of heart issue

(my heart rate had fallen to 30 beats per minute) and got me to the hospital a week ago. Thank

God!
That the hospital was quick to diagnose...no heart attack....not an issue with my heart

failure, but an electrical blockage in the heart itself that wasn't letting the left and right beat

together as they should. They were able to stabilize me by Sunday so that I could transfer to a

larger hospital for the resolution of the problem. I have chronic heart failure and watch for all the

classic signs but just missed or ignored the signs of the past month or so. Thank God!
That the solution was that I needed a pacemaker/defibrillator. The final tests etc were

done on the Tuesday after I had arrived from the initial hospital (on Monday afternoon) The

implant was done on Wednesday under sedation (not put totally out). Much the same drug that

Michael Jackson was using when he died. (Of course, I was in a hospital that had all the

requisite life saving equipment.) Thank God!
I have to tell you that I have never felt as close to death as I did lying on the table

waiting for the surgery to begin. I know my wife, Peg, was overcome by worry...she really didn't

want to let go of my hand, arm, leg whatever, from the moment they scheduled the surgery early

Wednesday morning and gave us a tentative time. I had been anointed early in the event and

had received communion and several blessings. So I was as ready to meet God face to face as I

could have been. But neither one of us really wanted it to be right now. Thank God!
To wake up (to me it was just moments after the nurse said "I am starting you on the

relaxant now") and see my wife and daughter sitting there waiting for me to open my eyes.

Thank God!
Even the post operative pain is wonderful. Thank God!
So let this be a prayer of thanksgiving for all the nurses, social workers, staff, and

doctors who did so much to help eliminate any worry about costs or anything other than needing

to concentrate on living a life style that will let me stay here for many more years.

PASTOR'S MESSAGE

We had a wonderful visit from our missionary Fr. George! I was very sad to see him leave. In

such a short period of time, he brought his gift of joy to our parish and to our rectory. His

laughter was contagious and Fr. Matt and I enjoyed spending as much time as we could with

him. Fr. George invited me to visit him in his country and I said I would one day. However, he did

not want to make a return visit to us in December or January. Something about being too cold

for him! I thank you for making Fr. George feel welcomed the past two weekends. He especially

liked watching the fireworks in Algonac on the 4th. Let us continue to pray for him and the

missionary work that he is doing for his country.
I hope that with Fr. George's visit one would be inspired to do the work of a

missionary. Does it mean entering a religious order or becoming a member of a missionary

community? No, but it does mean that we respond to the call of helping our brothers and sisters

in their time of need: physically, spiritually or emotionally. We have so many people within our

community who are already doing the work of a missionary. The volunteers of the St. Vincent

DePaul Society work tirelessly for the poor and abandoned. The Knights of Columbus members

continue reaching out assisting communities with their time and talents. The Daughters of

Isabella practice the art of being a “Martha” and a “Mary;” providing hospitality but remembering

to stay at the feet of the Jesus. And we cannot forget the countless others who give of their time

behind the scenes of the parish and other organizations affiliated with the parish.
However, we are in greater need of younger volunteers to carry on the tradition of

missionary work within a parish and the organizations affiliated with the parish. We need more

St. Vincent DePaul members to assist in lifting the poor in spirit up in their time of crisis. We

need more Knights to promote dedication to the Church and her teachings. We need more D of

I members to carry on the traditions of the Gospel. Missionary work in another country is an

admirable vocation because one is helping the poor and needy. However, one should not forget

the poor and needy within their own community.
I hope you like the new look of our bulletin. These changes were made to help us all

realize and embrace Our Lady on the River as One Parish Family. We will continue to make

changes to bring us closer together.
As we continue our Summer of '09, let us continue to pray for one another and help

each other during the joys and sorrows. Together we can make a difference in the life of our

neighbor and in our own lives.
I pray that all have a great and blessed week. Enjoy the sunshine and try and cheer

the Tigers on to a victory! I told my Dad, who is a huge Tigers fan, that I would make an extra

appeal for him because he wants to see them win the World Series this year.
All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim

Dear Lord,
We pray that the Blessed Mother
wrap her mantle around your priests
and through her intercession
strengthen them for their ministry.
We pray that Mary will guide your priests
to follow her own words,
"Do whatever He tells you" (Jn 2:5).
May your priests have the heart of St. Joseph,
Mary's most chaste spouse.
May the Blessed Mother's own pierced heart
inspire them to embrace
all who suffer at the foot of the cross.
May your priests be holy,
filled with the fire of your love
seeking nothing but your greater glory
and the salvation of souls.
Amen.

Saint John Vianney, pray for us.
