FR. MATT'S MATTERS
ALL THE WORLD'S GOD'S STAGE
Happy Fourth of July Weekend to everyone. The 4th is also known as Independence Day in the U.S.A. You may not know, but it is also a celebration for those who have chosen the state of life called celibacy, for the celibate has 'declared' the intent to not get married and thus be 'independent' (that's a kind of priest/church stab at humor). Of course, the independence declared in 1776 in Philadelphia was to seek freedom from monarchial rule and to craft a new country that would try to enhance freedom from coercion and persecution, a government of, by and for all the people. Preachers are quick to remind us that independence may rightly be declared in many ways, but not independence from God. Christians declare their dependence on the One Living God and the one He has sent, Jesus Christ, the Son. Jesus can rightly be called the God who fell to earth.
July 16 we mark the fortieth anniversary of the U. S. spaceship which landed on our moon, and the first human to walk on the moon. A few thousand years ago even such an idea would be viewed by some religious people as an arrogant affront to God. But that judgment would be based on what were the intentions and attitudes of the ones trying to do such a thing. There has been and is today a continuing tension between how much God (or 'nature) wants to allow us to be more “like Him”, and what is the dangerous 'crossing of the line'. All moral decision making must view not only the act or non-act but also the intentions of the decision and the circumstances surrounding it.
The whole great universe wherein we exist, we are not just 'on' it, but are part of this remarkable planet, the likes of which we do not know of elsewhere, and it is sheer gift. The Creator has created this Creation, and Planet Earth is the stage for what are the most eternally significant events we know of, our choices. We don't have to go to outer space or other planets to make a mark, leave a legacy or build the future. All the world is God's stage entrusted to us to see what we will do with our gifts. Does God need to be compassionate and merciful to us, or are we building a civilization of God's love, mercy and compassion, so that God the Creator is seeing His Son all over the earth, and is 'well pleased'. The seemingly smallest unrenowned act of compassionate kindness is always, through God's vision, a giant step and leap for mankind, for in it God sees Himself.
Welcome and thank you again to Fr. George Jingwa Nkeze from Cameroon. What a blessed experience it has been to have him here opening our eyes and hearts to a wider world/Church.
Keep praying, in Christ,
Fr. Matt Ellis.
The Lord is faithful in all His words;
Let us give thanks and praise!
The world is not perfect, and life continues to bring us challenges which move us to choices. The attitudes, the images we carry affect our communication with each other.
Jesus returns to his hometown in today's Gospel and the folks there tried to prejudice the minds of others against him. Have you ever tried to convince someone that you were different than their fixed opinion of you probably brought on by a pre-given image of someone else? The labels and categories we sometimes use for people do not exhaust the other's mystery. Life's events are not always easy to experience or to comprehend. This certainly proved true for Jesus when the people of Nazareth took Jesus found himself suddenly alone, and wasn't able to do much of anything there because they were closed and disbelieving toward Him. The Gospel tells us: “Jesus marveled because of their unbelief.” When people are critical towards others, especially those familiar and close to them, it is often difficult for them to see any other point of view than their own because they have decided to refuse to understand or love or accept others. As Jesus discovered at Nazareth that day, no matter how hard we try, there are always some people that just won't accept us.
We can all probably name people in our own lives that have dared to speak out, and because they did, were excluded because of the truth they spoke or because of obstinate prejudice. God does not exclude anyone. Gerald Jampolsky, M.D. in his book Love is Letting Go of Fear, asked this question: “Have you ever given yourself the opportunity of going through just one day concentrating on totally accepting everyone and making no judgments?” (p.97) He adds: “Everything we think, say or do reacts on us like a boomerang. When we sent out judgments in the form of criticism or other negative thoughts, they come back to us. When we send out love, it comes back to us.” (p. 99) There's a lot to be said for the old, familiar maxim, “If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.” Jesus reminds us today that if we are truly following Him and bearing His image in our hometown, in our world, to try to make a conscious effort to understand, love, and offer the hand of peace to one another. God does not exclude anyone!
Saints In Every Vocation Quest…..
I've been trying to stump the questers with the choice of saints, but not yet! Bravo once again to Mary Minnich, John & Joann Vance for discovering St. Joseph Moscati, M.D., and St. Bridget. Hope you enjoy your prizes! Now, on this holiday weekend, who is the patroness of the Americas and first canonized saint of the new world??? Her close friend and confidante was St. Martin dePorres.
Have a good week.
My prayer, love and support are with you!

We continue to show slow progress in our 2009 CSA Campaign. While there have been many very generous gifts, we have gotten no response as all from over 1200 of our registered parishioners. Won't you please join your fellow members of Our Lady on the River in supporting your parish? It would put our parish in serious financial straits if we would have to pay this large deficit from our regular parish contributions.
Father Jim has asked each parish family to consider a contribution of at least $100. Using the Pledge Method, this requires only a $10 initial contribution and nine monthly pledge payments of $10 each. With this method, the Archdiocese will send you a monthly reminder with a return envelope to make it as easy as possible. Of course, you can always make your contribution in one lump sum if you wish! May God bless you for your generosity!

Sharing the Gospel
People in his hometown did not believe that Jesus could be smart enough to teach in their temples. They did not believe he could heal. So he went to other towns to teach and heal. If someone says that you are not smart enough or skilled enough, Jesus understands. He will help you. Tell them, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Prayer
Lord, help me say to myself and others, "You can do it. God will help."
Mission for the Week
If someone is left out of a game, say, "I will play with you."

Proud To Be Crusaders
We moved to this area fourteen years ago. While driving around getting to know our new town, we discovered this little Catholic school and right there and then it was so clear to me: I knew then that my children would go here! My husband wasn't so sure: finances scared him a bit. However, it didn't take much to convince him that it was the right thing to do. Having recently gotten back to our own religious roots, we knew that Holy Cross would be a partner with us in helping to raise good, faith based children.
And so it began! Thirteen years and three children! It certainly wasn't easy. Through our years here we have had very little to complain about. We have seen many changes over the years and not everyone here has had the opportunity to actually teach our children. That does not change how we feel. Each and every one of you (teachers) is absolutely fabulous! You have all been so kind to the kids. Your dedication to your work is astonishing!
Thank you for preparing our children for their futures. They all have loved school and have always looked forward to their futures with great anticipation.
We will continue to support and praise Holy Cross and the Catholic education.

Words To Live By
God has endowed human beings with the capacity to love. It is through love that we fulfill our destiny to act in the likeness of God. From this stems our duty to serve those who need our help to live in security, justice, and freedom.

Let's Talk Family Planning…
On July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI published his encyclical, Humanae Vitae-Of Human Life. The Holy Father predicted the many evils that we experience today, including that man “may finally loose respect for the woman and…may come to the point of considering her as a mere instrument of selfish enjoyment, and no longer as his respected and beloved companion.”
This encyclical shows how “periodic continence…bestows up-on family life fruits of serenity and peace, and facilitates the solution of other problems; it favors attention for one's partner, helps both parties to drive out selfishness, the enemy of true love; and deepens their sense of responsibility.” For more information, call 313-237-4679 or visit our Web site at www.nfponline.org.
Wedding Anniversaries
If you would like your Wedding Anniversary published in the bulletin, please submit your Anniversary info to your parish office at least one month prior. Anniversaries will be published the last weekend of the month.

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
When children are very young, say around two or three years of age, their entire world exists within the walls of their home. And all that they are, all they believe, comes from their parents. In fact, in those young eyes, their parents are perfect; they believe everything Mom and Dad tell them is the truth, and they will do anything they ask (usually!). But as they grow older, and the world outside of those walls grows louder, the perfections of Mom and Dad seem to begin to falter. They are looked at through doubtful eyes, their wisdom challenged at nearly every turn. Often it is not until years later that we realize they were the same wise parents all along.
When Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time before his crucifixion, he cried. Not for his fate, but because those around him did not realize of their impending salvation. In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned to Nazareth to teach in the synagogue, yet his own people doubt his truth, remembering him as a boy and as the son of a carpenter. He remarks that prophets such as him are always scorned by those who know them best, the people of their hometown.
As children, our innocent faith and belief in God is unwavering. As we grow older, we sometimes question our beliefs and put aside our faith, rather than grow even closer to Christ. This is because "Faith seeks understanding" (CCC 158). Everything else in this world is explained visually through tangible facts; only faith can come from our hearts. Perhaps Jesus cried not only for those who saw his miracles yet did not believe, but also for us who did not see. Our challenge is to be as children in our faith, unwavering, open and believing with all our hearts.
