Pastor's Page
I was happy upon the return of Fr. Charles White as he celebrated his Mass of Thanksgiving with us. He is going to do a wonderful job out at his first assignment in Plymouth. I expect Fr. Charles to continue his ministry with the same zeal and passion as he did while as an intern here at Our Lady. However, I have a feeling that being reunited with Fr. Acervo is going have their pastor shaking his head from the mischief they can create. I do wish to extend a personal thank you to all the volunteers that helped make Fr. White’s receptions so nice. It was nice to see all the love that was showered upon our former intern. Let us continue to pray for Fr. Charles and Fr. Lee as they continue to do God’s Will in their assignments.
Last week I made mention of our missionary that would be staying with us for a week or so. Unfortunately, Fr. Charles Leke Nkafu will not be joining us due to scheduling problems. In his place we welcome Fr. George Jingwa Nkeze. Fr. George will be staying with us for a short time and will be making his missionary appeal over the next two weekends. I hope that you take the time to welcome him and listen to his vocation story. As we celebrate the “Year of the Priest” we must pay attention to the missionary priests around the world who proclaim the Gospel of Life and remember them in our daily prayers. They are the unsung heroes in our world and they should be prayed for daily.
Finally, you may notice that there are new signs up reminding us that Vacation Bible School is approaching us quickly! If you can help by volunteering or donating something towards the Dragon Fly Tree, your generosity will be greatly appreciated. It is a good week for the kids to attend and learn about their faith through readings, videos and activities. I enjoyed last year’s Vacation Bible School and I am anticipating another fun week with the kids.
Please be sure to read the letter from Archbishop Vigneron and keep him and all the other clergy in your prayers as they travel to Rome for this very special occasion with Pope Benedict, XVI .
Sister Geraldine Arnold is celebrating her 60th year of Religious Life as a Sister of St. Joseph. Please remember her in your prayers and pray for all vocations to the religious life and priesthood. She does not walk alone, she has a true friend in Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, together they live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they go and serve wherever they are called. I send my thanks to Sister Geraldine for all that she has given to our parish and the many lives that she has brought God’s love to through the years. I thank God that He brought her to us.
I pray that you have a blessed week and that you take the time to enjoy the wonderful summer weather.
All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim

Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
Give thanks to the Lord!

We celebrate Independence Day, the 4th of July, next Saturday. The significance of this day differs for each person, based on life experiences. Each of us has ideas and memories of how this holiday is observed. The signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia first became a celebration actually a year later, in 1777. By the 1800’s the traditions of parades, picnics, fireworks, and family reunions emerged. However it is celebrated, let us remember the sacrifices our Founding Fathers were prepared to make, and the bravery displayed through the years since by countless men and women who have served our country so that all people may live free from oppression. Thank God for all the blessings freedom brings.

Miracles still happen!

This week’s Gospel finds Jesus once again where there’s a crisis, and we can sense the excitement of a couple of folks who are able to live whole and healed as freed people of God. A miracle, Msgr. Giussani, notes” is an event or experienced fact by which God appeals to man to take notice of His Reality. A miracle is a way for Him to make His Presence felt. From this point of view, then, all things are a miracle…”
St. Mark tells us about Jesus, Jairus’ daughter, and a woman in the crowd in need of healing. Part of the healing gift that Jesus leaves Jairus’ daughter is the freedom for her and her family to return to some normalcy. Jesus’ final healing for the woman in the crowd besides her wellness is the gift of peace. How often in our lives do we look for the healing touch of Jesus for ourselves, our families, our parish, our world? Fr. Henri Nouwen, a prolific writer, a Catholic priest, shared every human yearning for the same. In his writing he was able to give voice to his constant struggle to be affirmed, to be made to feel special, to feel tangible proofs of love. What he writes is not a particular weakness, but a universal human struggle for wholeness.
In his diaries, Fr. Nouwen writes:”Today the small rejections of my life are too much for me – a sarcastic smile, a flippant remark, a brisk denial, a bitter silence, a failure to be noticed, a coldness from a colleague, an indifference from someone I love. I feel empty, afraid, restless, unsure, and I look around for an invitation, a letter, a phone call, for some warm gesture that can heal my emptiness. I need someone to make me whole.” Jesus is the Someone who comes to bring us life to the full. Bringing life is what Jesus is about. He is content to be humbly Himself and invites us into His company to bring light and life-giving peace and healing wherever we are. Miracles still happen, God touches us with healing – through people, relationships, and above all in faith, in the gift of the Holy Eucharist.

Quest for Saints in Every Vocation

This week’s saint was a wife, mother, Cistercian and Mystic. Daughter of a governor, she was also a friend and counselor to many priests of her day. She was canonized in 1391.
You are all in my prayer as retreat continues. Have a safe, enjoyable Independence Day! God bless you.

What is the R.C.I.A.?

The Rite of Christian Initiation for adults, (R.C.I.A.), is an instruction and conversion process for welcoming newcomers or returning baptized Catholics who want to learn about the Catholic faith to full communion in the Roman Catholic Church.
Who should attend?
Those not yet baptized, and those seeking information about becoming Catholic. Those baptized in another Christian denomination who desire full communion and membership in the Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation and wish to update their faith knowledge and personal spiritual growth.
Do I have to commit to the entire 2009-2010 year?
Not yet! The inquiry/pre-catechumenate series phase is designed to provide basic information and experience with prayer and Catholic practice, so that one can make a decision to continue or decide that this is not the right time in their life. No one is ever pressured to proceed through the process, as that decision is between each person and God.
How do I become a participant?
If you would like more information or be included in the Fall Inquiry Sessions, please call the parish office, or mention your desire to Fr. Jim, Fr. Matt or Sr. Mary Ann. It would also help to fill out the form below and return it in the offering basket or to the parish office.
Come, we hope to see YOU.

YES, I AM INTERESTED IN RCIA

While we have received some very generous gifts, you can see by the above results that achievement of our 2009 Catholic Services Appeal campaign goal is in serious jeopardy. This is primarily due to the lack of support from over 70% of our registered parishioners. If everyone would participate, we could achieve it. A ‘reminder’ was sent to everyone from whom which we have yet to hear. Please respond and be as generous as your circumstances permit. It would put our parish in serious financial straits if we would have to pay this large deficit from our regular parish contributions.
Father Jim has asked each parish  family to consider a contribution of at least $100.  Using the Pledge Method, this requires only a $10 initial contribution and nine monthly pledge payments of $10 each – less than the cost of one large pepperoni pizza per month.  Of course, you can always make your contribution in one lump sum if you wish!  Please try to respond by July 5 May God bless you for your generosity!

Sharing the Gospel

In today's Gospel a little girl was so sick that people thought she was dead. However, Jesus said she was just asleep. He held her hand and said, "Get up, little girl." Every day you work hard doing chores at home and learning at school. If you are tired and do not want to get out of bed, Jesus will hold your hand and say, "Get up and enjoy the day."

Prayer
Lord, help me get out of bed quickly to learn about your world.

Something to Draw
Draw a little girl in bed with Jesus holding her hand.

Mission for the Week
Make a Get Well card and give it to someone who is sick.

Are your kids ready to sink
 their teeth into BIG fun?
That’s just what they’ll do at this year’s Vacation Bible School, Crocodile Dock, where fearless kids shine God’s light! Crocodile Dock is filled with incredible Bible-learning that kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Bible Point crafts, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the Crocodile Dock activities that help faith flow into real life. (Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes and safe shoes.) Plus, we’ll help kids discover how to see God in everyday life—something we call God Sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot!
Many items are needed to make this years vacation bible school a success.
Please check out the Crocodile Dock displays located in the main entrance at each church.
Pick a dragonfly listing items needed, then return the dragonfly and item to the box provided by July 19th.

Register your kids today! Ages preschool (potty trained) through 5th grade are invited to join the fun. Register after Mass the weekends of July 11-12 or July 18-19 or on-line at www.groupvbs.com/webtoybox/myvbs/ourladyontheriver. 1st child $20; 2nd child $15; 3rd child $10

A Note From The Principal

I hope that you are enjoying the wonderful gift of summer. One reason that I like living in Michigan is the fact that we have four seasons. I can’t imagine living in a place where summer, or winter for that matter, didn’t make more than just a calendar appearance.
As summer vacation is officially around the corner, the school office is making preparations for the next school year. Tuesday, June 30th is the last day the school office will be officially open! A reminder, we are open from 9:00 a.m. until noon. The office will be ‘officially’ closed during the month of July. However, we are never more than a phone call or email away! Please feel free to leave a message at the school office 810-765-3591or drop us an email at school@holycrossonline.net for Mrs. Steinmetz, or principal@holycrossonline.net for myself. The Holy Cross rectory, 810-765-3568, can also reach us if you need us!
I am very grateful for the year that we have had. We have had many positive achievements, both academically and spiritually. Our athletes have also continued to perform very well. We have also had some sad times, losing some families and staff members to the ever-changing economy. Despite these setbacks, Holy Cross Catholic School will continue to provide a quality Catholic education to those who seek it.
I pray that you and your families have a safe, relaxing, and blessed summer vacation. Please keep our school in your prayers, and we will do the same for you. The school office will return to summer office hours on Monday, August 3rd. I will have more to share with you then. Until that time, I am pleased to be able to share some thoughts about Holy Cross from some of our school families. I hope you will take the time to read about why they are proud to be Crusaders starting next week. Have a wonderful summer!
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund

And he is eager to add wins to his record as a coach of 27 years for the St. Anne Elementary school football team—167 wins, 54 losses and 1 tie. “I care about my players and I want to coach their lives,” says Nick. He also wants to thank the donors: “They gave me another chance. Now I must continue to do as much as possible for others. I used to give blood, never thinking that donors might help me. I am grateful for donor.”

KROGER OFFERS BAR CODE FOR EASY LINKING
Effective May 01, 2009 you can link your Kroger Plus Card directly to Holy Cross School. (Cardinal Mooney and Religious Education too!)
Linking your Kroger Plus card just got easier with the new Kroger bar code. Just take this bar code (one for you and one for a friend) with you the next time you shop Kroger and have it scanned.
You may still sign up as a new customer at WWW.KROGER.COM to take advantage of weekly specials if you prefer.
If you have any questions at all or are unable to sign up, do not hesitate to call Sue Sharpe for assistance.
Please remember your family and friends can earn in your name too! Pass out a bar code to everyone you know!

Yes, SCRIP is actually money but in the form of a gift card. We purchase these gift cards at a discount, sell them to you at face value and split the profits with our families or organizations that participate.
Here is an example of how SCRIP can help. Let’s say you purchase VG’s gift cards from us to do your everyday shopping. You buy $100 a week in SCRIP and go do your shopping. If you do this every week for the entire year, you will spend $5,200 and earn a total of $208. That may not seem like much, but if 50 families all did the same thing, that would be over $10,000 that VG’s has offered to give us just for shopping at their store.
Now let’s say you shop at Neimans...Still buying $100 in groceries a week. At the end of the year you will have earned $260. If 50 families shopped at Neimans…that would be $13,000!
Groceries are something we all buy no matter how tough the times are. Please consider joining the SCRIP program and take advantage of what our participating retailers have to offer.

Archbishop Vigneron
"You are my family of faith"

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Monday is the Solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the great patrons of the City of Rome. This year I will be in Rome to celebrate this feast, honored June 29 every year. I will be con-celebrating the Holy Eucharist with Pope Benedict, XVI, and at the Mass the Holy Father will bestow the Pallium on me, along with all the other Metropolitan Archbishops named this past year.
The Pallium is a narrow band or collar of white wool, with six black crosses. An Archbishop who leads an Ecclesiastical Province (a regional grouping of dioceses) wears this vestment around his neck at Mass as a sign of his leadership and authority.
For me, this event is one of the great graces of my priesthood, and I’m sending this letter to invite you, who are part of my family of faith, to share it with me. To that end, let me say here a word about the meaning of the Pallium. This vestment is a symbol of my pastoral office and of my communion with the Holy Father and the other Archbishops of the Church, a bond that extends all the way back to St. Peter and St. Paul. So, I will come into St. Peter’s Basilica with all of you held in the prayer of my heart. As I kneel on the platform over St. Peter’s Tomb, I will be begging for two things from God: first that He strengthen me to be a good shepherd of His people; and second, that He help all of you and your families to grow in that same life and holiness that the Apostles handed on to us from Jesus. In return, I ask that on Monday – especially at Mass, if you are able to get to church – you lift up in prayer me, together with all my brother priests, that we be filled with the love and courage and zeal that burn in the priestly Heart of Christ.
There is so much more that I would like to share with you, much more than can be put into this letter. To help all of you be part of the Pallium pilgrimage, even if you cannot travel with me to Rome, I will be writing about it at greater length in my column for this weekend’s The Michigan Catholic. Our Archdiocesan Communications Department will be sending back reports about this event to be posted on our website: aodonline.org/pallium. CTND will be carrying the Mass on our local cable channel, and will re-broadcast several times in the coming week. Whenever you hear about the Pallium, please remember to ask the Lord to help all of us be better Catholics: better disciples of His and better companions of the Apostles.
Entrusting you and all of the people and parishes of our Archdiocese to the loving care of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,
The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron
Archbishop of Detroit

Words To Live By

In many problematic circumstances of life, the Christian knows he can count on the gift of wisdom, which is obtained by prayer and strengthened by listening to the Lord’s word and obeying the magisterium of the Church.

Massage painful areas. Apply gentle pressure to your scalp and temples. 4. Drink a caffeinated beverage. In small amounts, caffeine can enhance the pain effects of acetaminophen and aspirin.
