Father’s Day Weekend and what a great way to celebrate this day by welcoming home our former intern, Fr. Charles White! Fr. White comes back to where an important part of his formation took place and returns by leading us in the celebration of the Sacred Mystery. I have known Fr. Charles for quite some time and it was with great honor that I was able to participate in his ordination to the priesthood. He has come a long way since our first meeting at the seminary (especially with that beard). I recall those days when he was clean shaven. What hasn’t changed is his love of Christ and His Church, his desire to be an instrument of healing through the sacraments, and a laugh that is filled with joy. That is why we are truly blessed by his return and I hope that we remember our newly ordained father with our love and our prayers!
As we welcome back Fr. White this weekend, our parish will be welcoming a missionary priest from Cameroon the next two weekends. Fr. Charles Leke is scheduled to join our parish for ten days in which he will make his appeal for his Cameroon community. In speaking with Fr. Leke, he was looking forward to his travels to Michigan and was wondering what the weather would be like during his stay. I told him that it should be warm but then again it is Michigan and anything can happen! I know we will make him feel welcome and at home during his stay with us.
With all the things going on, I take a moment to remember my Dad. My update is a reminder of how precious life is and how a father continues to teach a son even during times of bad health. Dad is recovering at a rehabilitation center not too far from our family home. A few weeks ago, his oncologist called the family and wanted us to really think about hospice care. Although hospice ministry is a great assistance for people, we were not so quick to call upon them at this time. Taking our cue from dad, as a family, we were not ready to give up on him so we made contact with another oncologist. Dad’s new doctor sees that there is much fight left in him so she wants to help dad in his battle against cancer. She knows that dad will have to persevere against some tough odds but she will be there with him and with his family. The teaching from dad is that we do not give up, especially on life! We persevere in times of trial and anxiety and ask the Lord to walk with us and labor the cross with us. It has not been easy watching my dad go through all of this but knowing that I have him for one more day has enabled me to have joy in my heart and not sorrow. I ask for your continued prayers and support for my dad and my family because we will get through this together.
I close my article with a reminder to read the insert in today’s bulletin. The letter is from the Archdiocese’s Department of Finance. It is their summary of the financial review team’s findings and their recommendations in accordance with the office of Parish Life.

Some things we are already doing and some things that we must address in the immediate future. They have been a tremendous help to me and the staff on how to continue making our merger a success. We are a very unique merger and they want to see us succeed that is why they have been spending a great deal time with me and the parish leadership.
Happy Father’s Day and May God bless all of you with a good and holy week!
	Fr. Jim

Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
Let us always praise God’s Name!

Happy Father’s Day, and Thanks to all Fathers and Grand-Fathers, living and deceased, for their love, loyalty, and commitment to their spouses and families, & for their good example & witness of lived faith.

Retreat
One of the gifts of religious life has been the chance to spend time each year on retreat. In addition to my own retreats, I have spent occasional years conducting or directing retreats for youth and adults. This June 21st, as in the past seven years, I have been invited again to direct a seven day retreat for a group of our Sisters of St. Joseph at our Nazareth Center near Kalamazoo. Please pray for all who are making this retreat and for me, that God will do great things during these hours and days. Thank you ahead of time for your prayers.

“Peace! Be Still!”
Those are the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel passage. Psalm 46 says it also: “Be still and know that I am God!” After Jesus stopped the storm on the sea, He asked: “Why are you afraid? Where is your faith? Where is your trust?” So, how do we come to place our trust in someone, or in Jesus? Distrust and self-protection are everywhere. We want to trust, we want to have faith, but at times, it’s just the hardest thing, isn’t it? How do we move toward trust? There is no easy way. It is a journey that takes a lifetime. Jesus will calm some of the storms in life and Jesus will calm us in every storm of life. We have nothing to fear, God IS with us. “The one who has made the promise is worthy of trust.” (Hebrews 10:22-23) Yes, Jesus is Someone you can absolutely trust – without deception or duplicity! Our faith assures us that God’s Holy Spirit is giving us strength and inner peace, even when things are rough and we’re feeling exhausted & stressed or facing an uncertain future. “If God is for us, who can be against us?’ (Romans 8:31)
“But it’s not easy to believe that.,” says Fr. Rolheiser.” Perhaps if we had all been loved perfectly, had perfect confidence, and had never been wounded, disappointed, betrayed, or made to cry tears of regret, we would find it easier to believe that we can trust, that we have no need to protect ourselves, and that we do not need to be forever anxious about how we are measuring up, how we are being perceived, how we are being understood and whether we are worthy of love.”
On the other hand, here is Jesus this day saying we are safe because we are in loving hands. It is safe to trust, because as our faith teaches, and as Julian of Norwich affirms, in the end, all will be well. God IS with us. God never sleeps. Sometimes though, we may be asleep to His abiding, faithful Presence.
Remember “Life moves pretty fast; if you don’t stop and look around every once in a while, you could miss it.” (Matthew Broderick in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

Quest of Saints in Every Vocation
Congrats to Regina Lomasney, John & Joann Vance, Mary Minnich & Pat Johnston for discovering St. Paschal Baylon. (Enjoy your McDonald’s prize!) Now, who is the medical doctor, born in Italy, who considered the poor & the sick as his family and was canonized by John Paul II? November 16th is his feast day.

Have a happy, safe week.

What is the R.C.I.A.?

The Rite of Christian Initiation for adults, (R.C.I.A.), is an instruction and conversion process for welcoming newcomers or returning baptized Catholics who want to learn about the Catholic faith to full communion in the Roman Catholic Church.
Who should attend?
Those not yet baptized, and those seeking information about becoming Catholic. Those baptized in another Christian denomination who desire full communion and membership in the Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation and wish to update their faith knowledge and personal spiritual growth.
Do I have to commit to the entire 2009-2010 year?
Not yet! The inquiry/pre-catechumenate series phase is designed to provide basic information and experience with prayer and Catholic practice, so that one can make a decision to continue or decide that this is not the right time in their life. No one is ever pressured to proceed through the process, as that decision is between each person and God.
How do I become a participant?
If you would like more information or be included in the Fall Inquiry Sessions, please call the parish office, or mention your desire to Fr. Jim, Fr. Matt or Sr. Mary Ann. It would also help to fill out the form below and return it in the offering basket or to the parish office.
Come, we hope to see YOU.

YES, I AM INTERESTED IN RCIA

Our 2009 Catholic Services Appeal campaign continues but if we are to reach our goal we are going to need some serious help. While Father Jim has asked each parish family to prayerfully consider a contribution of at least $100, we have received many much smaller gifts. Many of these smaller gifts were true sacrifices in these troubled economic times; however, we believe others may not have realized this campaign covers an ENTIRE YEAR of Archdiocesan support. If your initial gift did not meet Father Jim’s request and you wish to increase it, please place the additional amount in an envelope marked CSA and we will insure that it is credited to your account.
For those who have yet to respond to Father Jim’s request, consider using the Pledge Method, this requires only a $10 initial contribution and nine monthly pledge payments of $10 each.  Of course, you can always make your contribution in one lump sum if you wish!  Please try to return your Pledge Card with your contribution by July 5. May God bless you for your generosity!

Sharing the Gospel

Jesus and his disciples were in a boat on the water. Hurricane winds turned the boat on its side. Jesus was sleeping. The disciples awoke Jesus saying, "Teacher, we're going to drown. Save us. Save us." Jesus was upset because his disciples believed that he would let them drown. Jesus waved his arms over the sea. The wind stopped blowing. The waves calmed down. The disciples were amazed and thankful.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, when I am afraid, give me hope and courage. Amen

Something to Draw
Draw Jesus, his disciples, and you on a boat during a windy storm.

Mission for the Week
If your friend is afraid, ask God to make the fear go away.

Are your kids ready to sink
 their teeth into BIG fun?
That’s just what they’ll do at this year’s Vacation Bible School, Crocodile Dock, where fearless kids shine God’s light! Crocodile Dock is filled with incredible Bible-learning that kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Bible Point crafts, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the Crocodile Dock activities that help faith flow into real life. (Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes and safe shoes.) Plus, we’ll help kids discover how to see God in everyday life—something we call God Sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot!
Many items are needed to make this years vacation bible school a success.
Please check out the Crocodile Dock displays located in the main entrance at each church.
Pick a dragonfly listing items needed, then return the dragonfly and item to the box provided by July 19th.

Register your kids today! Register after Mass the weekends of July 11-12 or July 18-19 or on-line at www.group.com/webtoybox/myvbs/ourladyontheriver.

Year for Priests
Pope Benedict XVI has declared a “Year for Priests” beginning with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 19, 2009. The year will conclude in Rome with an international gathering of priests with the Holy Father on June 19, 2010.
With the announcement of this Year for Priests, the Pope has declared St. John Vianney the Universal Patron of Priests on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of the Curé d’Ars.

A Note From The Principal

Happy Summer! I hope that you and your family are able to take advantage of the season to spend time together.
Preparations are already underway for the 2009-2010 school year. One of the key events that takes place over the summer is the cleaning of the building! The classrooms are already being emptied and prepared for the deep cleaning and waxing that each summer brings. We thank God for those days with a cool breeze and low humidity which moves the process along so well.
What preparations have you made for the next school year? Now that this year is finished, when you look back, are you satisfied at how the school year went? Did you find that your child was an individual in his or her class, or just part of the group? Do you look back and wonder if your son or daughter received enough attention in his or her class of young elementary students?
Holy Cross is able to provide a quality education to students in grades preschool through eight. Our teacher to student ratios are also well below the norm. Would you like your son or daughter to be in a classroom where the ratio is 10:1? Would you like not only quality academics, but the faith that you practice each day, to be instilled in your son or daughter? If the answer is ‘yes,’ I invite you to stop by the school office this month between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. You can also call and leave a message any time at 810-765-3591 or if you prefer, email me at principal@holycrossonline.net. I am happy to share with you the partnership opportunity we offer here at Holy Cross!
Did you know that SCRIP is available throughout the summer? The dedicated SCRIP moms are running their regular hours during the summer! SCRIP is also available at the Holy Cross and St. Catherine’s rectories, or by calling one of our SCRIP peddlers. With gas prices on the rise, think about how much SCRIP profit you can earn by using this service. Now, think about how much MORE you can earn if you invited a friend to join you? If you do not have children in school, but would like to help provide a quality Catholic education to the children of our parish, please call the school office, and we will assist you in ‘adopting’ a family with SCRIP!
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

American Red Cross Blood Drive
Christian Service Commission News

On June 28th, the Christian Service Commission will once again host a blood drive and we are asking for your help. The blood drive will be held at the Holy Cross Activity Center from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. When you donate, you have a wonderful opportunity to help so many who are in need. Donating blood is easy—it costs you nothing—except your time. The need is constant. The gratification is instant. Please give blood. For more information, please contact Linda Neumann @ 810-794-4605.

Recipient
Cody was only four when an infection in his mouth turned out to be the first sign of a disease that had already riddled his body with tumors and cancer cells. Cody had Burkitts Leukemia. His body could no longer produce blood cells, so chemotherapy and blood transfusions became a way of life. Cody persevered and today, in remission, he is a rambunctious ten-year-old. His family is deeply grateful to the many blood donors who generously gave this gift of life.

Please Pray for Priests
Dear Lord,
we pray that the Blessed Mother
wrap her mantle around your priests
and through her intercession
strengthen them for their ministry.
We pray that Mary will guide your priests
to follow her own words,
“Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5).
May your priests have the heart of St. Joseph,
Mary’s most chaste spouse.
May the Blessed Mother’s own pierced heart
inspire them to embrace
all who suffer at the foot of the cross.
May your priests be holy,
filled with the fire of your love
seeking nothing but your greater glory
and the salvation of souls.
Amen.
Saint John Vianney, pray for us.

Our Lady on the River

Marine City, MI 48039

Dear Fr. Lopez,

I want to commend you and the parish leadership for your ongoing work to make the merger of Our Lady on the River a success. I know that you have faced many challenges, as you continue to work together to unify your parish community.

I also recognize the movement of the parish to be in compliance with Archdiocesan Financial Policies and Procedures by July 1, 2009. Specifically, as noted in the Resource Manual for Parish Restructuring, pp. 18-19:

Debts and assets are merged into the new parish Loan Deposit Program with assistance from the Finance Department
The parish will file one AOD Budget and Financial Report for all activity

I also recommend that you report your combined weekly collection in your parish bulletin, rather than each site reporting separately. If funds have been raised for a specific purpose, i.e. a building repair or renovation, they may be designated in a restricted savings account to be used for that purpose only. Otherwise, all savings and debt should be identified as the savings and debt of Our Lady on the River, rather than that of one of the former parishes.

I know that the parish has already merged many of its programs and services, and has worked hard to forge a common identity for the new parish. If my staff can be of any assistance to you as you make these changes, please don’t hesitate to contact my office.
