A Note From The Principal
Time flies! It seems like yesterday I was welcoming everyone back to school. Now, we have sent everyone on their way to summer vacation! I hope that you will
find the time this summer for relaxation and rejuvenation of mind, body, and spirit.
This week we have just finished was certainly a busy one! On Monday, our kindergartners graduated and will be joining us in the fall as our new first graders. On
Wednesday, we came together as a school to participate in our annual field day activities. Thank you to the many parents and teachers who helped make this event such a
success. On Thursday, the first through seventh graders were recognized for their many achievements during our annual honors assembly. I would like to thank our families
and extended families for attending this worthwhile event.
Even though the students have gone, the work has not ended…it is only just beginning! Our maintenance crew will begin the very large task of deeply cleaning the
building.
The school office is now operating on our 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. summer schedule for the remaining days in June. While we may be here earlier or later, you can
count on a friendly face during these times. Please feel free to stop in to find out more about our programs. We have your registration paperwork waiting for you!
In speaking of our great programs, the SCRIP program will be running throughout the summer. It is never too early to start planning for the future, and SCRIP is a
wonderful way to do so. Do you know someone who is a current student, or perhaps would like to be a student here at Holy Cross? You can help them by taking part in the
SCRIP program! Just stop in at the SCRIP office located in the school, or at St. Catherine’s or Holy Cross’ office to get started today. Just choosing to use gas and grocery
SCRIP can mean great savings toward continuing the quality Catholic education we offer at Holy Cross!
As we all deal with the changing economy, we have worked to make changes here at the school as well. Unfortunately, this meant having to eliminate a teaching
position. On behalf of our entire school family, I would like to thank Miss Michelle Robinson for her many years of service to the students and families of Holy Cross Catholic
School. She will be deeply missed!
In His Service,

The Most Holy Body and

FR. MATT’S MATTERS
Let’s make them perfectly clear…
Holy Cross Church Windows
The window work going on this month is threefold: 1. removing the old, clouded, plastic type outdoor glass; 2. cleaning and doing any needed repairs to the original
stained glass; 3. installing new, protective, insulating, clear, tempered outdoor glass. The new glass is insured. The funds for the project come from the previously raised and
dedicated capital campaign account for the Holy Cross church building. Enjoy this beautiful landmark dedicated to our Lord!
A few of you have asked me for a written version of my Trinity Sunday homily from last weekend. Not all the lines are serious ones, so I trust you’ll be able to
distinguish them! It is not meant to be a ‘proving’ of the Trinity, since it is a revelation by God of God, a matter of faith.
The Bible doesn’t use the word ‘Trinity’, but it is a primary and basic Christian belief. Reading the four Gospels certainly shows that the One God is understood as
revealing Himself to be (and that there is) “Father/Son/Holy Spirit”. Have you noticed how often and how much “it” (life?) comes in threes? ‘Three-ness within one-ness’ just
pops up everywhere: small, medium, large; yes, no, maybe; GM, Ford, Chrysler (?); vertical, horizontal, diagonal; one atom consists of protons, neutrons, electrons; land,
sea, air; work, rest, play; lead, follow, get out of the way; past, present, future; hot, cold, lukewarm; me, myself, I; first name, middle name, last name; black, white, gray;
subject, verb, object; executive, legislative, judicial; Democrat, Republican, everyone else; gold, silver, bronze; idea, plan, execution; offender, offended, mediator; sin,
repentance, forgiveness; one + one + love = one; man, woman, child; father, mother, child; husband, wife, child; for the child is there a better/best sequence? -- marriage,
love, baby carriage; marriage, baby carriage, love; baby carriage, marriage, love; baby carriage, love, marriage; love, baby carriage, marriage; love, marriage, baby carriage?
The Irish often say “Jesus, Mary and Joseph”. Gold, frankincense, myrrh; do unto others/as you would have/done unto you; my view of me, others views of me,
God’s view of me; an earth bound human being consists of body/mind/soul; psychology analyses our thoughts/feelings/behaviors; love of God/neighbor/self, and love for God
with all of one’s heart/soul/mind; deny Me three times, say you love Me three times; life, death, resurrection; faith, hope, love; God/is/love; I/love/you; everything of God has
truth/goodness/beauty; there are the three, faith, hope and love; Scripture/Tradition/Teaching Authority of the Church; heaven/hell/purgatory; true love is more than one, it is
more than two, it must reach out and be, so to speak, at least three. Three that are also one, one that is also three, a three-ness in one-ness and a one-ness in three-ness.
Creation is chock full of mystery and wonder, why would not Creation resemble its Creator? (“in the image of God, God made them”, Genesis).
All of reality is complex because everything has an inner life that is relational even within itself. In all that exists and is real, there is the understood and the yet to
be more understood. The Trinity is something all about God, God for us is Love, and Love is all about relationship. Relationships unfold, reveal and develop. That says
something about why Jesus told us to put God (who is Love) first, so that what unfolds and develops can be the adventure piloted by the Supreme Travel Agent, the Origin of
all that is. The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ reminds us that the Eucharist is the most personal and relationally faithful celebration of the intimacy God wants with
us. It is our ongoing connection to and development of the relationship we have with the Living God in Jesus Christ, our personal and communal Lord and Savior who we
need to keep accepting every day. Join in the mystery, keep coming to Mass and seek to bring someone who otherwise is not with us.
In the love of Father, Son and Spirit blest,
Fr. Matt Ellis.
Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God
This is the feast of the most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord! Today’s scripture is a reminder of why we come here each week – to offer our love,
thanks and lives to God, who transforms the simple gifts of bread and wine into Jesus’ Body and Blood.
The holy Eucharist we receive becomes our most holy spiritual food. The energy and grace we receive from the wonderful gift of the Eucharist is energy and grace
to be expended in building up God’s reign in our midst, here on earth. Let today’s solemnity be a reminder to us that the Eucharist we receive in this sacred place is our
nourishment to continue the work of the Lord. God invites each of us to make a difference in our world.
In his sermon “The Weight of Glory,” C.S. Lewis wrote: “Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses.” The Holy
Communion we receive is always meant to overflow into communion among us. We take into our own bodies the very life of God. We are the indwelling. We can’t very well
be in communion with Christ if we are divided among ourselves. Today’s feast brings a greater awareness that the true presence of Christ is in the Eucharist we receive and
in our neighbor who walks with us .
Year of the Priest
The Pope opens this special year with vespers service at the Vatican this week, on June 19th, the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He will close the celebration
in St. Peter’s Square June 19, 2010. “Priestly ordination creates new men who are bestowed with the gift and office of sanctifying, teaching and governing, “ the Pope said.
Let this year be a special time of prayer and support for those whom God has called as priests.
Congratulations, Father David Jenuwine
This past week, I had the honor of being present for the Ordination to the Order of the Priesthood for Fr. David Jenuwine. Fr. David was ordained by Archbishop
Robert Carlson for the Diocese of Saginaw. Fr. David’s parents, Bill & Pat Jenuwine, are and have been members of Our Lady on the River parish for many years. We are
happy for them and congratulate them and Fr. David on this joyous, grace-filled blessing. In his note of thanksgiving on the day of ordination, Fr. David wrote: “Please
continue to pray for me, and know that I am praying for you. May God richly bless you for all of your support of my vocation as well as vocations in the Church.” And I echo
what the people of the parish in which he served as Deacon said: “Fr.David, May the steadfast love of the Lord be with you always, as you enter into the service of God and
His holy people.” Thank you for persevering in responding to God’s call.
Kudos to ….
Mary Minnich, Sr. Geraldine, Pat Johnston, Regina Lomasney, John & Joann Vance for discovering St. Rita of Cascia in last week’s “Saints in Every Vocation”
quest. So now, who is the shepherd boy born in Spain in 1540 whose 2 great loves were the Eucharist and the Blessed Mother? He was canonized in 1690 and Pope Leo
XII pronounced him the “greatest among the saints of the Eucharist.”
God love all abundantly this week.

Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
Online calendars are on the parish and location websites.
What is the R.C.I.A.?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for adults, (R.C.I.A.), is an instruction and conversion process for welcoming newcomers or returning baptized Catholics who want to learn
about the Catholic faith to full communion in the Roman Catholic Church.
Who should attend?
Those not yet baptized, and those seeking information about becoming Catholic. Those baptized in another Christian denomination who desire full communion and
membership in the Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation and wish to update their faith knowledge and personal spiritual
growth.
Do I have to commit to the entire 2009-2010 year?
Not yet! The inquiry/pre-catechumenate series phase is designed to provide basic information and experience with prayer and Catholic practice, so that one can
make a decision to continue or decide that this is not the right time in their life. No one is ever pressured to proceed through the process, as that decision is between each
person and God.
How do I become a participant?
If you would like more information or be included in the Fall Inquiry Sessions, please call the parish office, or mention your desire to Fr. Jim, Fr. Matt or Sr. Mary
Ann. It would also help to fill out the form below and return it in the offering basket or to the parish office.
Come, we hope to see YOU.

We are almost halfway to our 2009 Catholic Services Appeal campaign goal. If everyone would participate, we could achieve it. We are currently missing over 1300
families! A “reminder” has been sent to everyone from whom which we have yet to hear. Please respond and be as generous as your circumstances permit. It would put our
parish in serious financial straits if we would have to pay this large deficit from our regular parish contributions.
Father Jim has asked each parish family to consider a contribution of at least $100. Using the Pledge Method, this requires only a $10 initial contribution and nine
monthly pledge payments of $10 each. Of course, you can always make your contribution in one lump sum if you wish! Please try to return your Pledge Card with your
contribution by July 5th. May God bless you for your generosity.

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus broke the bread and said, "This is my body." Then he held up the cup of wine and said, "This is my blood." During Mass the priest says the same words:
"This is my body. This is my blood." Through the prayer, the bread and wine are changed into the body and blood of Christ. When you eat the body and blood of Christ, it
gives you the power to say "No," to evil.
Prayer
Jesus, please bless everything I eat and drink. Amen

American Red Cross Blood Drive
Christian Service Commission News
On June 28th, the Christian Service Commission will once again host a blood drive and we are asking for your help. The blood drive will be held at Holy Cross’
Activity Center from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. When you donate, you have a wonderful opportunity to help so many who are in need. Donating blood is easy—it costs you
nothing—except your time. The need is constant. The gratification is instant. Please give blood. For more information, please contact Linda Neumann @ 810-794-4605.
Recipient Stories:
Madison—Madison came into the world early. Weighing in at barely one pound, she had scarcely enough blood in her tiny body to keep it going. But with seven blood
transfusions and two platelet transfusions, she has beaten the odds. :Without the generous donations of perfect strangers, our child would not be alive today,” says Julie,
Madison’s mom. “How do you say thank you for a gift like that?”
Tiffany—Tiffany was just fourteen when she suddenly became ill with aplastic anemia, a life-threatening blood disease. She received regular transfusions of platelets until a
perfect bone marrow match was found—her little brother Nick. Tiffany is a healthy, active high school honor student. “When I got sick, people I didn’t even know joined my
donor pool to make sure I would have enough blood. Now it’s my turn to give back and thank everyone for helping to save my life.”

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Recently, we attended the wake of a dear friend who had succumbed to cancer. She was in her early 70s, and had three grown children, all married. Over the
years, the family had grown distant; the siblings were leading their lives with problems of their own and had little contact with their mother. Yet at the wake, they seemed to
come together, realizing that everything they were, all of their traits and values and loves and struggles, were given to them by their mother. In her death, they came to know
that they were given the greatest gift, the gift of life.
Today, we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. We are called to reflect and renew our faith in the saving nourishment of the Eucharist. At
the Last Supper, Jesus broke the bread and poured the wine, instructing his disciples not only to eat and drink in his memory, but to do so with others who would believe.
All that he was, he wanted to give to the world. And as he foretold in the distribution of the loaves and fishes, each of us who receives him is to give him as well.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines the Eucharist this way: "The Eucharist is a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Father, a blessing by which the Church
expresses her gratitude to God for all his benefits, for all that he has accomplished through creation, redemption, and sanctification. Eucharist means first of all
'thanksgiving'" (CCC 1360). As we approach the altar prepared to receive the body and blood of Christ, perhaps we would do well to remember the sacrifice he gave for us-his
very life. In doing so, we realize that sense of thanksgiving that embodies the Eucharist.

A Mission: Possible Moment…
Most of my life, I have had a “form over substance” approach to Holy Communion: receiving the Eucharist dutifully, intellectually, but not with my heart. In
my thirties I experienced what I call a “Eucharistic conversion.” I en–countered a woman who believed with all her heart and recognized Christ as really and truly present in
the Eucharist and admonished the group I was with to seriously consider the gift that we have, but take for granted. She said she could not receive Communion because she
was not Catholic. When I asked her why she did not convert, she said that in her country, she would be killed if she converted and she was not ready to make that sacrifice.
She was a Muslim from then Yugoslavia. Her witness struck me to my core and from that moment I sought an intimate relationship with the Lord. On this Feast of the Body
and Blood of Christ, may each one of us experience our own Eucharistic conversion, so that we too may recognize this tremendous gift and become what we receive–the
Body of Christ.

I am thankful for the mess to clean up after a party
Because it means I have been surrounded by friend.
I am thankful for the taxes I pay
Because it means that I’m employed.
I am thankful for my shadow who watches me work
Because it means that I am out in the sunshine.
I am thankful for the clothes that fit a little too snug
Because it means I have enough to eat.
I am thankful for the spot I find at the far end of the
parking lot
Because it means that I am capable of walking.
I am thankful for all the complaining I hear about
government
Because it means we have freedom of speech.
I am thankful for that lady behind me in church who sings off key
Because it means that I can hear.
I am thankful for the piles of laundry and ironing
Because it means that my loved ones are nearby.
I am thankful for the lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing
Because it means I have a home.
I am thankful for my huge heating bill
Because it means that I am warm.
I am thankful for the weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day
Because it means I have been productive.
I am thankful for the alarm that goes off in the early
morning hours
Because it means that I am alive.
I am thankful for this opportunity to praise God in prayer
For so many things that look like difficult
situations
Because it means I am beginning to see with the eyes of faith.
Amen
