A Note From The Principal
Alleluia! Today we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. The Holy Spirit came to the apostles and gave them the power to speak in
various languages or tongues. Through this gift, they were able to go out and spread the Good News to more and more people
throughout the world.
The Holy Spirit touches each of us as well, not only through our baptism and confirmation, but when we share in the
Eucharist. The Holy Spirit is not limited to the times that we are gathered together. I believe that we feel His presence with us
whenever we look for Him. We thank the Spirit in times of success and we look for Him in times of need. Sometimes we hear His
call, and other times, we try to avoid it. What is the Spirit saying to you?
This week our eighth graders are celebrating the accomplishment of a job well done. On Monday and Tuesday, they will
be traveling to Cedar Point and the Kalahari Resort on their eighth grade trip. Please keep them in your prayers. On Friday, they
will graduate from Holy Cross Catholic School after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. “Graduation” is something that people have asked me
about. The question posed is “Why do we have an eighth grade graduation when they still have to go on to high school?” My
answer is simple. These students are graduating from Holy Cross. This is the last time that they will all be together. As a school
we are proud of their accomplishments, and we are celebrating their success. Please pray for our graduates as they go their
separate ways, that the academic and spiritual foundation that they have built here will support them throughout their lives.
Our preschoolers have also graduated, and we are looking forward to seeing them back in kindergarten next year. Do
you have a preschooler or kindergartner? Don’t forget to register them as little Crusaders for the 2009-2010 school year.
This week, I had the opportunity to have a “stand-in.” Owen Rogus, one of our seventh graders, was our “Principal of the
Day.” He greeted the students in the morning, visited the classrooms, and did many other “principal duties.” (I don’t want to take
the mystery out of the office.) I also asked him to contribute to my bulletin article. His thoughts are listed below.
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal
I like to go to Holy Cross because it is fun. I have learned a lot about Religion and all of my school subjects. All of the
teachers are nice and friendly. The other students help you when you need it. Holy Cross is a really good school and I am proud
to be a student here.

FR. MATT’S MATTERS
Pentecost Sunday, Happy Birthday to the Church! If you’re wondering what this greeting means, seek the answer and you will find
it. This year our birthday means “the Church” is about 1976 years old! We celebrate the Church’s first ‘coming to be’, not here or
there or this building or that, but the original experience of Christ giving of His promised Spirit to the first Christians, those people,
actually those first catholic Christians, since catholic means universal. Thus, Catholic Church is universal Church, which is
Christ’s intention that the Church reach out to the ends of the earth to all people. The ‘birth’ happened in one part of the world but
was experienced as something for all, everywhere. Which is why being a Christian today, especially a Catholic, is not to be a
person confined to one nationalistic tendency, but to truly care about all people all over the earth with real Christian charity, not
merely idle talk or an ‘oh yah, them too’ once in a while.
MARITIME DAYS, 2009, many volunteers, many enjoying the weekend. The weather was great for this time of year, and for this
blessing we give thanks. That is, thanks too for the many people who participated in this community event. Many of our
parishioners from Our Lady on the River helped and had fun. That is just what we need in these times, as a country and a local
community and as a merged parish with three church sites. We thank our parishioners, those who came in from farther away, and
the parish staff personnel who gave extra of their time and effort. A special thanks goes to the organizers of the different aspects of
the weekend and to our chairman, Don Smith.
Congratulations to our graduates as we honor them this weekend at the 4:00pm and 9:30am Masses.
Would you like to know? (part 4). Much is debated today about ‘torture’. Here’s what the Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
2297, Kidnapping and hostage taking bring on a reign of terror; by means of threats they subject their victims to intolerable
pressures. They are morally wrong. Terrorism which threatens, wounds, and kills indiscriminately is gravely against justice and
charity. Torture which uses physical or moral violence to extract confessions, punish the guilty, frighten opponents, or satisfy
hatred is contrary to respect for the person and for human dignity. 2298, In times past, cruel practices were commonly used by
legitimate governments to maintain law and order, often without protest from Pastors of the Church, who themselves adopted in
their own tribunals the prescriptions of Roman law concerning torture. Regrettable as these facts are, the Church always taught
the duty of clemency and mercy. She (the Church) always forbade clerics to shed blood. In recent times it has become evident
that these cruel practices were neither necessary for public order, nor in conformity with the legitimate rights of the human person.
On the contrary, these practices led to practices even more degrading. It is necessary to work for their abolition. We must pray for
the victims and their tormentors.
In the peace, charity and wisdom of Christ,
Fr. Matt Ellis.
The Spirit of God bears witness to the risen Christ: Come, Holy Spirit, fill our hearts, and kindle
in us the fire of your love!
Today we celebrate the solemnity of Pentecost as we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit. The event of
Pentecost is a real stunner! Jesus’ disciples, who had been so fearful and hesitant since Jesus’ Ascension – are suddenly
transformed into fearless leaders for whom nothing seems impossible. Our faith tells us that the Holy Spirit of God is everywhere
at all times. When you and I open our hearts and accept, receive, and take in the gift of the Spirit of God, it makes all the
difference. We celebrate Pentecost because we need to do what the first disciples did – accept and receive within us the Holy
Spirit who has been present to us from the moment of our birth and given to us in Baptism.
That mighty wind and tongues of fire we hear about in the reading from Acts were outward signs of the change the Holy
Spirit brought about. Those first disciples were the same men and women as before that moment, but they suddenly had the
courage of their convictions. They were able to draw strength from their memories of Jesus.
The Holy Spirit does not transform our personalities, or fill us with new information. The Holy Spirit enables us to be
ourselves, and to reflect on what we have experienced from our risen Savior. The Holy Spirit enables us to be courageous and
confident, and lifts our self-esteem. It is the gift of the Holy Spirit who is the bond that molded a new and emerging community in
those early days, and is just so today with us in our emerging community of faith. Our Church, our Parish, is a community in
which each person has different, unique gifts, all of which are important . Each of us has a gift to give and love to share. Let us be
energized in God’s Holy Spirit this day, centered on the risen Jesus, and allow the Holy Spirit to breathe afresh upon us, and bring
delight to our hearts. Jesus promised that the heavenly Father would give the Holy Spirit to those who asked. Ask then and
receive. The most important thing about the creative power of the Holy Spirit is not to understand or explain the implications, but
to experience the Spirit in our lives.
St. Thomas Aquinas has written: “All truth, by whomever it is spoken, comes from the Holy Spirit.” We have been
entrusted with a wonderful treasure, may we guard it and celebrate it with the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells within and works in
us. God’s love and strength is poured out abundantly upon us. May we find great peace in that fact and enjoy Pentecost in grand
style as we witness by our words and actions that Jesus is Lord!
Congratulations 2009 Graduates
Best wishes to all graduates! May God bless you and guide you as you make important decisions for your future. We
are proud of our graduates and wish them the best. Come often to your parish spiritual “home” and know the welcome mat is
always out.
May God send forth His Spirit and renew us and the whole earth!
Have a great week.

What is the R.C.I.A.?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for adults, (R.C.I.A.), is an instruction and conversion process for welcoming newcomers or returning
baptized Catholics who want to learn about the Catholic faith to full communion in the Roman Catholic Church.
Who should attend?
Those not yet baptized, and those seeking information about becoming Catholic. Those baptized in another Christian
denomination who desire full communion and membership in the Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have not received First
Eucharist or Confirmation and wish to update their faith knowledge and personal spiritual growth.
Do I have to commit to the entire 2009-2010 year?
Not yet! The inquiry/pre-catechumenate series phase is designed to provide basic information and experience with prayer and
Catholic practice, so that one can make a decision to continue or decide that this is not the right time in their life. No one is ever
pressured to proceed through the process, as that decision is between each person and God.
How do I become a participant?
If you would like more information or be included in the Fall Inquiry Sessions, please call the parish office, or mention your desire
to Fr. Jim, Fr. Matt or Sr. Mary Ann. It would also help to fill out the form below and return it in the offering basket or to the parish
office. Come, we hope to see YOU.

Vocation Family Prayer Comments
Each Sunday, at the 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Mass, anyone is invited to take home the parish crucifix and prayer
manual to pray at home for vocations. Each week, those who have had this privilege, are invited to write comments on their
experience.
“This is an experience every parent should embrace and cherish. I’ve prayed for each of our children since they were
born to be raised up to serve others through the Church or any other way the Lord would choose to use them as instruments of His
peace and mission.
This prayer exercise confirms that our children are really not just “ours” at all, but rather, they are His and it is our
chance to set before them straight paths of love, justice and uncompromising service to one another.”

Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke
During hot, humid weather, the body’s internal temperature can rise and can result in heat exhaustion and heatstroke. If not
quickly treated, heat exhaustion can progress to heatstroke, which requires immediate emergency medical care and can be fatal.
Signs and Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion:
Severe thirst
Muscle weakness
Nausea, sometimes vomiting
Fast, shallow breathing
Irritability
Headache
Increased sweating
Cool, clammy skin
Elevation of body temperature to 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40.6 degrees Celsius)
Signs and Symptoms of Heatstroke:
Severe, throbbing headache
Weakness, dizziness, or confusion
Difficulty breathing
Decreased responsiveness or loss of consciousness
Little or no sweating
Flushed, hot, dry skin
Elevation or body temperature to 105 degrees Fahrenheit ( 40.6 degrees Celsius) or higher
What to do:
If the child has a temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit or more, or shows signs or symptoms of heatstroke, seek emergency
medical care immediately. In cases of heat exhaustion and while awaiting help for a child with possible heatstroke:
1. Bring the child indoors or into the shade immediately.
2. Undress the child.
3. Have the child lie-down; elevate feet slightly.
4. If the child is alert, place in cool (not cold) bath water, or sponge bathe the child repeatedly. If outside, spray the child
with a garden hose.
5. If the child is alert, give frequent sips of cool, clear
fluids (clear juices or sports drinks are best).
6. If the child is vomiting, turn his or her body to the side to prevent choking.
7. Monitor the child’s temperature.

Sharing the Gospel
One day one of your best friends may move away, and you won't see him every day. You can still stay close to your friend by
talking on the phone, writing letters, or sending e-mail messages. Jesus knew he would be leaving. He would not see his friends
every day. Jesus promised to send his Spirit to them. When they were confused, the Spirit would show them the truth. When they
missed him, Jesus would send them messages by the Holy Spirit. Through the Spirit, Jesus could always stay close to his
friends.
Prayer
God, thank you for sending your Spirit so I can stay close to Jesus, too. Amen
Something to Draw
Draw a picture of God's Spirit whispering in your ear.
Mission for the Week
Before you sit down to read a Bible story, ask God to send his Spirit to help you. When you listen carefully to God's word, the
Spirit can send you a special message from Jesus!

Our 2009 Catholic Services Appeal campaign continues and we are showing significant progress. However we are still a
LONG WAY from our target. If everyone would participate as Father Jim has asked, we will have a successful campaign with no
extra expense to the parish. Big goals are easy if everyone does their little bit.
Father Jim has asked each parish family to consider a contribution of at least $100. Using the Pledge Method, this
requires only a $10 initial contribution and nine monthly pledge payments of $10 each. Of course, you can always make your
contribution in one lump sum if you wish! Please try to return your Pledge Card with your contribution by June 7. May God bless
you for your generosity!

Assurance
When life is bright and sunny
or when the teardrops fall,
There’s one thing I am sure of
God’s with me through it all.
He did not put me on this earth
to walk life’s path alone;
He sent His Son to be my Guide,
The dearest friend I’ve known.
When my life draws to a close,
I will not go alone;
He who safely guides me here
will safely lead me home.

Why is Pentecost Also Called Whitsunday
In English-Speaking Countries?
Today we celebrate Pentecost, the New Testament Greek name for fifty days after Easter, to honor the presence, role and function
of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians. Pentecost is also the Jewish Feast of Weeks or Shavuot, exactly fifty days after
Passover, celebrating the giving of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai, while thanking God for the first fruits of the grain harvest.
Pentecost is also known as Whitsunday in English-speaking countries. The origin of Whitsunday is uncertain but the
most common explanation has Whitsunday originating in Old English as the term for "White Sunday," a reference to the white
robes worn by those newly baptized at Pentecost. The early church traditionally baptized only on Easter and Pentecost, liturgical
celebrations with strong baptismal themes.
A less common explanation is that Whitsunday originally meant "Wisdom Sunday," in honor of the outpouring of the
Spirit of Wisdom celebrated on this day. In baptism, the primary gift of wisdom, along with the other gifts of the Spirit descend
upon the newly initiated, as they did on the apostles on that first Pentecost.
Whatever name Christians use for the feast of Pentecost, the essence of the feast centers on the role of the Spirit as the
source of unity, wisdom and guidance on our faith journey.
Today would be an excellent opportunity to gather with fellow Christians to thank God for the gift of the Spirit and to pray
for wisdom in living out our Christian lives.

A Family Perspective
by Bud Ozar
Today, on Pentecost, we remember Christ gave us the Holy Spirit to assist us in raising our family and He expects us to
use this gift. Let’s turn off the distractions and tune into the Holy Spirit who “will guide us to the truth.” Let us “testify” to our
children that true happiness is found in service, forgiveness and love for one another.
"When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth." Are you inclined to let the Holy Spirit lead you to
your true vocation in the Risen Lord…perhaps as a priest or consecrated religious? Call the Vocations Office, Father Tim Birney,
at 313–237–5875, or you may visit the website, www.vocationsdetroit.org.
