A Note From The Principal

Alleluia! He Is Risen! As we near the end of the Easter season, I pray that you will continue to feel Christ’s presence throughout your daily activities. I am blessed to have the opportunity to see Him each day in the children who are entrusted to my care at Holy Cross Catholic School. There is nothing more moving than when a young child attributes some aspect of his life to God. From the flowers blossoming to the healing of a loved one, children are truly open to His presence. While we teach children, we are also taught by them!
On Wednesday our school community came together for our annual school May Crowning. This year we added an additional devotion to Our Blessed Mother by coming together in a “Living Rosary.” This will be an annual tradition at Holy Cross, and we will invite all of our parents and parishioners to attend. A number of teachers worked together to make this possible and I am grateful for their dedication to the faith education of our children.
Last week, our eighth graders were able to visit the Holocaust Museum in Farmington Hills with their social studies teacher, Mrs. Marie Love. This was a moving experience for our students as they were able to see this historical tribute and learn more about the past. If you have a chance to visit the museum, which is located in Farmington Hills, I hope that you will be as moved as they were.
As the end of this school year draws near, we are planning various important events. Our eighth graders will officially become Holy Cross Alumni on June 5, 2009 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. All are welcome to attend and congratulate our students on this achievement. Other upcoming events are our Kindergarten graduation on Monday, June 8th, field day on Wednesday, June 10th, and our end-of-the-year honors assembly on Thursday, June 11th.
As you consider the future, I hope that you will make Holy Cross a part of it. Your children are your gift from God, and we welcome the opportunity to become your partner in education.
Did you get your SCRIP this week?
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

The Ascension of the Lord

Memorial Weekend is here and we take this opportunity to give thanks to those men and women who have given their lives in the name of freedom. We are a very blessed nation in which men and women volunteer and serve in the armed forces to protect us and our independence. That is why we take the moment to celebrate the lives of those who died in the line of duty or those who served and came back home to their loved ones. A few weeks ago, I managed to take a few days off and travel to New York. Outside my hotel was a statue of an Army Chaplain named Fr. Duffy. Fr. Duffy served in World War I as a chaplain and ministered to those in the Fighting 69th. His leadership and Christ-like presence inspired many men to live and serve selflessly and they honored this humble chaplain and priest with a statue in the heart of Times Square.
Fr. Duffy is one example of a person who served a selfless life but we have many around us who have done similar acts. Sr. Geraldine Arnold is celebrating 60 years as a Sister of St. Joseph. Listening to some of her stories is quite remarkable because she has done so many different things for the Church: from accounting to classroom teacher, from tutor to spiritual guide, she has done many things for our Church and for the communities in which she lived. We are very blessed to have someone like Sr. Geraldine reminding us to do God’s work with love and humility.
As Sr. Geraldine continues her ministry, we look forward to one who is about to begin his ministry in the priesthood. Deacon Charles White is preparing for his ordination to the priesthood in a matter of days. Our former intern is making his final preparations for the Sacrament of Sacred Orders. I was very blessed to have been in the seminary with Deacon Charles for a few years and I have gotten to know him even more since my ordination to the priesthood. He is a humble and loving man of God who is going to have a tremendous impact at his first assignment. I am eager for his ordination and I hope that many will take the time to either attend in person or watch the ordination on television. We were fortunate to have Deacon Charles for a short period of time but the Church is blessed to have him for life.
So as we pray for the men and women who have served our country selflessly we cannot forget those who serve our Church faithfully. Let us give thanks for all and pray for more people to answer God’s call in serving God and country!
	All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim
Sharing the Gospel

It was time for Jesus to go back up to heaven. Before he left, Jesus asked his friends to tell the whole world the good news. God wanted all people to be saved from their sins through Jesus. If people believed in Jesus, God would forgive them, and they could do great things to help others. If people refused to believe in Jesus, God would not forgive them, and they would not be saved. God was with Jesus' friends as they shared the good news. It is your turn now. God wants you to tell the world the good news about Jesus. God will be with you, too.
Prayer
God, help me as I tell people about Jesus. Amen

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of yourself telling a friend about Jesus.

Mission for the Week
List the names of your family and friends on a piece of paper. Has anyone refused to believe in Jesus? Put a star by their names. Pray for them, and ask God to help you share the good news with them.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill our hearts!
The readings today are about us and community, specifically about two unifying elements within community: love and leadership. What kind of unity exists between Jesus and the Father? What kind of unity exists between Jesus and the disciples? What kind of unity exists between us?
Jesus prays for all who believe in Him and His ultimate purpose in His requests, it seems, is that they may be one as we are one (v.11). This oneness is not merely a unity of thought among those who receive the teaching of Jesus. It is a matter of a shared life of faith that is characterized chiefly by love. It is linked with the mutual indwelling of the Father and the Son in the Spirit. The actual working out of this unity is a process that will take some time. It is a spiritual oneness that overflows to a recognizable unity that is present throughout the life of the community as we make “every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Eph.4:3). Jesus prays that we believe in God’s fidelity toward us, and embody this love becoming ourselves living proof of God’s mercy, love and truth. This comes from God. It is a gift, a sign of the Holy Spirit. It isn’t something any of us can manufacture or create. Throughout the history of the Church, there continually arises a lack of unity among communities, within families, between persons. Jesus’ prayer shows that there can be no unity, no oneness apart from Him. Jesus is the center of our reason for being. No matter what we do, the person of the risen Jesus remains faithful and constant. A sign of authentic community is the degree of trust, honesty & mutual care and support that seems to exist as we nurture what God has begun.
The beautiful Peace Prayer attributed to St. Francis, says it well: “Let me not so much seek to be consoled as to console, or to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.”
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
Last Saturday’s Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was a fun evening with over 160 parishioners enjoying each other’s company and a delicious meal. It’s a nice way for Fr. Lopez, our pastor, to say ‘thanks’ to so many of you who give of yourselves in generous service day by day. Thanks to Pam LaBelle, the main parish secretary & Judy Beauvais, parish bookkeeper, who coordinated the evening with the assistance of their energetic helpers.
Pentecost Sunday – RCIA
Next Sunday at the 10:00 a.m. Mass, those who were recently baptized and received the Easter Sacraments for the first time will gather again as a group to bring to completion the RCIA process which helped unite them and lead them to the faith. On this day, they will carry the white robes of Easter to the altar, put them aside in a prayerful ritual and be “sent” to continue to witness to the resurrection of Jesus, be true to God’s word, and live the powerful experience of the Holy Spirit in bringing new vitality to the Church.

Have a good Memorial Day Week-end.

What is the R.C.I.A.?

The Rite of Christian Initiation for adults, (R.C.I.A.), is an instruction and conversion process for welcoming newcomers or returning baptized Catholics who want to learn about the Catholic faith to full communion in the Roman Catholic Church.
Who should attend?
Those not yet baptized, and those seeking information about becoming Catholic. Those baptized in another Christian denomination who desire full communion and membership in the Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have not received First Eucharist or Confirmation and wish to update their faith knowledge and personal spiritual growth.
Do I have to commit to the entire 2009-2010 year?
Not yet! The inquiry/pre-catechumenate series phase is designed to provide basic information and experience with prayer and Catholic practice, so that one can make a decision to continue or decide that this is not the right time in their life. No one is ever pressured to proceed through the process, as that decision is between each person and God.
How do I become a participant?
If you would like more information or be included in the Fall Inquiry Sessions, please call the parish office, or mention your desire to Fr. Jim, Fr. Matt or Sr. Mary Ann. It would also help to fill out the form below and return it in the offering basket or to the parish office.
Come, we hope to see YOU.

YES, I AM INTERESTED IN RCIA

Speaking of Graduates and Alumni
Alumnus, Jeanne Lovett Graduates Medical School

Dr. Jeanne M. Lovett, M.D. and I want to celebrate her accomplishments with you. A reception/party is planned for Sunday, June 7th at the East China Park. After the party, Jeanne will leave for Chicago to begin her three year residency in Pediatric Medicine at Advocate Lutheran. This is an opportunity to get together and see everyone. Come early and stay late. Food will be served form 1 - 4 p.m. If you would like, bring a dessert or snack to share and a chair to sit on. We have reserved Pavilion #2 nearest the playscape.
Representatives from the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be on hand to accept donations of non-perishable food items for their pantry in Jeanne’s honor to assist children and families in need. No other gifts requested.

Vocation Family Prayer Comments

Each Sunday, at the 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Mass, anyone is Invited to take home the parish crucifix and prayer manual to pray at home for vocations. Each week, those who have had this privilege, are invited to write comments on their experience. Today, the May family shares their insights.
Although we volunteered for this activity, we weren’t as prayerful as we should have been. As a family, we put our “busy lives” ahead of our spiritual lives. We allowed our everyday obligations to consume our focus.
Thankfully, those who choose religious vocations do not give into this luxury of convenience. They are willfully obligated to God and the Church at all times. Our family is fortunate to have such dedicated religious – priests, sisters, deacons – to guide us.
We will work harder to support them by praying for their spiritual, physical and psychological well being on a daily, not weekly basis. We will also pray that others continue to respond to the call to religious vocations.
The May Family – Jeff, Amy, Zach, Alex and Nicholas
