A Note From The Principal

Alleluia! He Is Risen! I pray that as you continue on your Easter journeys you will feel Christ's presence in the world around you. Today's reading in The Little White Book focuses on simple truths. The author states that some truths of our faith are easy to say and understand. Also some of the simplest truths are the hardest to understand. I pray that you and your family will find inspiration through our faith.
This concept is an inherent part of the education that your child or grandchild will receive at Holy Cross Catholic School. The students have daily religious education, rather than once a week for part of a year. Religion classes are taught by certified catechists, who are also responsible for daily instruction. Students also participate in the Mass weekly, and take part in the celebration by being readers, carrying the gifts, and being altar servers. If you are looking to educate your WHOLE child, consider Holy Cross as your new partner in education.
Our athletic season is drawing to a close. Our students, coaches, and families have participated in their athletic banquet. I would like to thank our coaches, coordinators, parents, volunteers, referees, spectators, and the Holy Cross Boosters for their support.
Registration packages for the 2009-2010 school year are now available in the school office for families wanting to become Holy Cross Crusaders. Please stop in or call the school office at 810-765-3591 to receive a package. We would be happy to provide you with a tour. We would also like to welcome your child to spend part of a day visiting Holy Cross. Please call the school office to schedule an appointment. Would you like to learn more about Holy Cross from our parents? We would be happy to introduce you to a mentor family who can also answer your questions about Holy Cross.
Have you heard about our SCRIP program? Have you started using it to plan for your future Crusader's education? Do you have a Kroger card? The new program that they are offering is easy to use, and does not require gift certificates…only a FREE Kroger Plus Card, which you may already have. Please stop in to learn more about this program.

In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

FR. MATT'S MATTERS

Memorial Day Weekend is next week, May 23-25, 2009. NOTE WELL: Saturday and Sunday Masses will be at St. Catherine's in Algonac, as follows: Saturday at 4:00 p.m. (no 5:30 Mass), Sunday at 8:00, 10:00, 11:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Also, St. Mark's begins its 4:30 p.m. Saturday Mass for the summer. Memorial weekend Masses are an inconvenience for Marine City parishioners, but please bear with it and try to come to Mass, as so many have in past years. If you need a ride to Mass, ask someone you know or call us at the office. Memorial Day Monday Mass at Holy Cross will be at the Holy Cross CEMETERY CHAPEL at 9:00a .m.
Maritime Days Memorial Day week end is still very much in need of volunteer help, so please sign up at the entrance of church this weekend. Please, we need help!
It's was a blessing to be with the many who attended the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Fr. Jim and I hope you found it an enjoyable blessing also.
Did you know, would you like to know? Part 3.
As you may have gathered, one purpose of my recent articles has been to make the point that there is a scope and breadth to Catholic moral principles, as the U.S. Conference of Bishops has stated: no.55: the…”themes from Catholic social teaching provide a moral framework that do not easily fit ideologies of right or left, liberal or conservative, or the platform of any political party. They are not partisan or sectarian, but reflect fundamental ethical principles that are common to all people.” (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, USCCB, 2007). Other pertinent points from the same Church document, meant for all Catholics: No. 14, “The Catholic call to faithful citizenship affirms the importance of political participation and insists that public service is a worthy vocation. As Catholics, we should be guided more by our moral convictions than by our attachment to a political party or interest group. When necessary, our participation should help transform the party to which we belong; we should not let the party transform us in such a way that we neglect or deny fundamental moral truths.” No. 15, “The Church cannot and must not take upon herself the political battle to bring about the most just society possible. The Church cannot and must not replace the State. Yet at the same time she cannot and must not remain on the sidelines…” No. 18, “The formation of conscience includes several elements. First, there is a desire to embrace goodness and truth. For Catholics this begins with a willingness and openness to seek the truth and what is right by studying Sacred Scripture and the teaching of the Church as contained in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is also important to examine the facts and background information about various choices. Finally, prayerful reflection is essential to discern the will of God. Catholics must also understand that if they fail to form their consciences they can make erroneous judgments”. No. 40, “The consistent ethic of life provides a moral framework for principled Catholic engagement in political life and, rightly understood, neither treats all issues as morally equivalent nor reduces Catholic teaching to one or two issues. It anchors the Catholic commitment to defend human life, from conception until natural death, in the fundamental moral obligation to respect the dignity of every person as a child of God. It unites us as a 'people of life for life', pledged to build what Pope John Paul II called a 'culture of life'. This culture of life begins with the preeminent obligation to protect innocent life from direct attack and extends to defending life whenever it is threatened or diminished”.
More next time, in Christ,
Fr. Matt Ellis
Sharing the Gospel

I would be really happy, if only I was ? rich ? popular ? better looking ? the boss. Those selfish wishes sound great, but they cannot give you true happiness inside. In today's Gospel, Jesus shares the three secrets to his complete happiness: (1) Jesus obeyed God; (2) Jesus knew God loved him; (3) Jesus loved other people enough to die for them. Wow. Jesus was completely happy, but he was not selfish at all. In fact, Jesus told his friends if they followed his loving example, they could be completely happy too. Follow Jesus to be filled with happiness from the inside out.

Prayer
God, on my own I am selfish. Thank you for loving me. Help me to obey you. Help me to love other people as much as Jesus does. Amen

Mission for the Week
Read John 15:9-17 with your family. God loves you, and he wants you to be completely happy, but you need to let go of your selfishness. You can obey God and love others by sharing your time with them. You can show your love for God by sharing your money with others, too.

God's love for us is revealed in Jesus;
Let us give thanks and praise, alleluia!

Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate

As I begin to write this, our Church is commemorating the Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima recalling the famous apparition to the three shepherd children of Fatima - Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, which took place in the summer of 1917 during the First World War. Our dad served in the Army during that war in France, and I've often wondered if he was aware of this event. I do know that he carried and prayed his rosary during that time. Even now, some ninety-two years later, we continue to turn to Mary in prayer, praying hundreds of Hail Mary's in the rosary with simplicity and trust, asking her guidance, asking still for the peace of Jesus to come to our world.
Last Sunday morning, at the end of the 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Liturgies, our parish honored Our Blessed Mother as children placed flowers before her image, and, while singing “On this Day”, Becky & Hannah Schultz at Holy Cross and Annemarie & Tina Ponessa at St. Catherine assisted in crowning Mary on Mother's Day.
What is love?

According to today's scripture, the center of all living is love. In the brief eight verses of the Gospel, Jesus continues to talk about the centrality of love. The word love is used eight times, and the 2nd reading as well is all about love. It is not only the center of Christian living, but needs to be the center of any kind of life. All of us, at one time or another in our lives, experience love in some way. Yet, even as Jesus says: “Love one another as I have loved you!”, there are times in our lives, perhaps too often, when we find people who either reject, refuse, deny, avoid, or betray our love. Jesus urges us to “remain” in His love. The disciples found out day by day how to come to appreciate, understand, and love Jesus more. They learned that loving Jesus is not simply an emotional response, but implies a decisive, continued action - abiding, enduring, and steadfast, and is expressed in a sincere caring for the needs of others without expecting anything in return.
We still need to learn slowly, day by day, how to love people with God's love, to be able to forgive, to be able to be reconciled. The ability to reach out in love and to experience being loved is a great grace of our God, who is love, who calls each of us friend. In living God's love, we do find the fullness of joy because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us. (Romans 5:5), and who enables us to do what we ourselves could not do on our own - love one another as God loves us.

This Sunday we continue with our 2009 campaign for the Catholic Services Appeal. We wish to thank all the parishioners who have participated thus far. Our parish target is $110,000 and the results to date show that $26,185 has been pledged from approximately 150 participating families. This means we still have about 1606 families to hear from! As Father Lopez has asked, please consider a contribution of at least $100. Using the Pledge Method, this requires only a $10 initial contribution and nine monthly pledge payments of $10 each. If each parish family would do this, we would easily reach our CSA goal and have some “untaxed” returns from the Archdiocese to fund some of our needs.
If you have not received your Pledge Card, please contact the parish office at 810-765-3568 and we will see that you are provided one. You may return your contribution by mail in the envelope provided, or by dropping the envelope in the collection basket or returning it to the parish office.
Please try to return your Pledge Card with your contribution by June 8. May God bless you for your generosity!

The world needs the witness of “new men” and “new women” who, in word and deed, make Christ present in an ever more powerful way, for Christ is the only complete and superabundant answer to the longing for truth and happiness in the human heart.
-Pope John Paul II

Pentecost Sunday
As we have done in the past, on Pentecost Sunday (May 30th & 31st), you are encouraged to get into the 'spirit' of the day by wearing red clothing, and bringing a red geranium(s) to Mass and placing it around the Altar. Please place the geraniums in one of the plastic liners and not directly on the carpet.
Your gift of flowers will then be planted around our Church grounds. So mark your calendars, set aside some red clothing, and set your sights on a red geranium!

Fresh Flowers For Mary
You are invited to bring fresh flowers from your yard to be placed on Mary's altar at St. Catherine Church for the remainder of the month of May.

6th Sunday of Easter

It was 1943, and Hitler's legions of death squads had occupied most of Poland. In the small town of Nowogrodek, sixty Jews were executed. Soon, however, the Gestapo arrested another 120 citizens to be executed simply as a show of force. A small order of nuns, the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, offered themselves in exchange for the release of the 120 prisoners. The Nazis agreed, and on July 18th, eleven sisters were lead out into the woods and were murdered. Today, a biala fara (white church) stands at the final resting place of the blessed martyrs who gave their lives without hesitation for their friends.
Perhaps it is difficult to comprehend what it would feel like to willingly lay down one's life for a friend. In today's Gospel reading from John, we are given the answer through what is known as the Great Commandment-love. Jesus tells us that there is no greater love than to be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for another. This is exemplified in God's pure, unending love for us in offering his only Son to die for our sins and give us everlasting life. If we are able to love one another purely and wholly as he loved us, all things will be possible, even our ultimate sacrifice for another.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church is very clear in explaining Jesus' words to us that if we are to love one another "as I have loved you" we cannot do it simply through words of promise or imitation (CCC 2842). Only through the strength of the Holy Spirit will we be empowered to demonstrate, from the bottom of our heart, true love, mercy, and forgiveness. In the words of St. Ignatius of Loyola, "Teach us, good Lord, to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost."
