Pastor's Page
As we welcome the month of May, we look towards our Blessed Mother to give us the love and guidance we need in our lives. Since we are named after Our Lady, we must

remember to give thanks to her as she continues to watch us grow as one, united parish. However, we cannot just thank Mother Mary today, we must give thanks to all

mothers on this Sunday. We can simply say thanks for giving us life and trying her very best in teaching the value of life. So my thanks to all the “moms” out there who

followed the example of Mary and said “yes” to the call of motherhood.
This week, our former intern Deacon Lee Acervo, will be ordained with his classmates to the Sacrament of Holy Orders. There are five men set for ordination this year and I

had the privilege of attending seminary with them. All five are good candidates to the “Call” and I ask that we keep them in our prayers so they will strive to be good and holy

priests. Like our Blessed Mother, these men are saying “yes” to God’s calling and are about to begin a ministry in which their experiences are filled with joys and sorrows. I

pray that the newly ordained follow the order of Mary when she spoke at the wedding at Cana, “do as he says.” If the men follow that command and stay true to Jesus, they

will be good shepherds. But we must continue our prayers for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Finally, as we thank our mothers and pray for the newly ordained, we must not forget to celebrate Pentecost! Pentecost is our reminder that we too have a mission that

must be accomplished and that mission is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ as our Savior. Pentecost signifies that the Easter Season has come to a conclusion,

but that our goal is to go out and proclaim that we are all disciples of the risen Christ. We forget that sometimes. Just because an event is over we move on to something

else. Jesus is asking us not to forget about him or replace him with something else in our lives. Jesus is asking us to remain true to him as he remains faithful to us. We live

in a world where things move so fast and furious that we tend to ignore those signs in which Jesus is speaking to us and telling us that he loves us.
Before I forget, next weekend Fr. Lee Acervo will have his Masses of Thanksgiving on Saturday, May 17th at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday May 18th at 11:30 a.m. Also, our

Senior Class from Cardinal Mooney High School will be graduating at 2:00 p.m. from Holy Cross Church. Please keep them in your prayers as well as they continue their

journey in life.
All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim

Fr. Matters
The ‘Magnificent’ Seven And The One

Happy Pentecost Sunday! Pentecost was the ‘breakthrough’ birth of The Church (as the people, not inanimate buildings) for those first disciples of Jesus—when

they were open and ready to receive the Holy Spirit of God as promised by and given through Jesus Himself. It is the Holy Spirit working within us who makes it possible for

us to pray to and worship the One True living God. I stated I would write more regarding antidotes to sin and, as weekly participators usually realize, the Eucharist (the

Mass) is the ‘go to’ Sacrament necessary for taking on the powers of sin and death.
All seven Sacraments we have are important gifts for our life in Christ. Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit the earliest Christians began to fully realize that

Jesus’ greatest spiritual gift to them was the Eucharistic celebration: at least celebrated every Sunday as the day of the Lord; the celebration content included the gathering,

Sacred Scripture readings and memoirs of the apostles, homily, and prayers leading to the presentation of bread and wine, the consecratory thanksgiving, and communion.

The first Christians began what we have and do today. There should be nothing to regret in going to Mass every weekend, even if, for example, the homily (sermon) wasn’t

great. Don’t allow anyone to convince you otherwise. We are present to do the best we can in participating to hear God’s word, worshipping and giving thanks to God and

receiving Christ in Communion, not to be entertained, nap, or take the role of expert critic, etc. The ordained priest is, of course, to prepare and do the best he can that day.

We can only ‘get something out of it’ if we ‘put ourselves into it’ consciously and with deliberate intent to participate prayerfully.
The singular excellence of the Lord’s Supper as our Sacrament is well stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, pub. 1994, and the following is some of it’s

text. “The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical (church) ministries, … are bound up with the

Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ Himself…it’s called the Holy Liturgy

because the Church’s whole prayer life finds its center and most intense expression in the celebration of this sacrament. We speak of the Most Blessed Sacrament

because it is the Sacrament of sacraments. The mode of Christ’s presence under the Eucharistic species (the form of changed bread and wine) is unique. It raises the

Eucharist above all the sacraments as the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend. In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist the

body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really and substantially contained. This presence is

called ‘real’-by which is not intended to exclude the other types of presence as if they could not be ‘real’ also, but because it is presence in the fullest sense: that is to say,

it is a substantial presence by which Christ Jesus, God and man, makes Himself wholly and entirely present”.
Ok, so the importance of the Eucharist has been stated, and it’s clear our 2000 year tradition sees it as spiritual food for the battle. There’s much more richness to

our understanding and putting of the Eucharist into practice in our lives.
	More later, in Christ’s love,
Fr. Matt Ellis, your Associate Pastor.

National Collections

Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal support this month’s Catholic Communications Campaign (CCC) special collection, one of the six national collections funded through

CSA donations each year.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops established the CCC in 1979 to respond to the domestic communications needs of the Catholic Church in the United

States. Since then, it has been the Church’s voice in the media: educating, entertaining, inspiring and informing the public about Gospel values.
The videos, films, radio and television public service announcements and other communication resources created by the CCC have won many national awards and have been

cited for their compelling content and impressive production values. In addition to quality programming at diocesan and national levels, the CCC offers movie and television

programming reviews on its Web site (www.usccb.org/ccc).
Take the Challenge: “Workshop Training Day”
For starting up or Participating in a
Catholic Men’s Fellowship Group…..

The workshop provides a wonderful opportunity for capturing a fuller vision along with a practical understanding of the value, purpose and fruitful functioning of Men’s faith

support groups. Meet new brothers in Christ! Listen to testimonies of men who have experienced the power and blessing of walking in Christ with their brothers. Come,

and bring a friend or two to the workshop. For those of you who have been in men’s groups for awhile can recapture the vision and catch the spirit of what God is doing

across the Archdiocese. The meeting is sponsored by the Archdiocesan Office of Evangelization.

Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
“The Spirit of God bears witness to the risen Jesus: Come, Holy Spirit, fill our hearts, and kindle in us the fire of Your love!”

Pentecost

Many gifts of the Spirit, but the same God Who works them in us all! That mighty wind and tongues of fire at Pentecost were outward signs of the change the Holy

Spirit brought about in the disciples. They were the same men and women as before, but they suddenly had the courage of their convictions. They were now able to draw on

their memories of Jesus. The Holy Spirit does not transform our personalities, or fill us with new information. The Holy Spirit enables us to be ourselves, and to reflect on

what we have experienced from the Lord. The Holy Spirit makes us courageous and confident, and lifts our self-esteem. It is the Holy Spirit Who is the bond that molded a

new and emerging community out of the early followers of Jesus; and is just so today with us.
Our Church, our parish, is a community in which each person has different gifts, all of which are important. Each of us has a gift to give, and love to share. May we

share those gifts we are given for the up building of our community. May the Holy Spirit make us all one family in Jesus and bring us together to do the works of love. Peace

and the Holy Spirit go hand in hand. May the Lord lighten the burdens of your hearts and bring you peace.

Trivia Time

Kudos to John Vance and Patricia Johnston who found the fruits of the Holy Spirit in Paul’s letter to the Galatians 5:22-23. God’s Spirit makes us loving, happy,

peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled. New Question: In Ephesians, what are the ‘rules for the New Life’ that Paul describes?

Happy Mother’s Day!

God’s blessings on all the mothers of our parish community! Hope this day is a day of great joy for each of you. During this month of May, we also offer our thanks

and praise to Our Blessed Mother Mary. We remember with gratitude all that our mothers have done and continue to do for us. As we honor and celebrate the love and

selfless dedication of our mothers today, take time to say thank you to your mother. Take time to share love, a laugh, a hug. Show your mom how much you love and

appreciate her. Ask God to bless her. If your own mother has been called to God’s Kingdom, take a moment of thankful prayer for her goodness as you send your hug

heavenward! May God bless every mother with peace and fill them with joy. Have a wonderful day!

With prayerful love and support,
 Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

Sharing the Gospel

The apostles were given the power to forgive sins. When you tell the priest your sins, he has the power to remind you of God's forgiveness. Jesus died on the cross

so your sins can be forgiven. Because God forgives you, he wants you to forgive others. Forgiving those who hurt you is very hard when you are angry and hurt. Ask God to

fill you with love and make you strong enough to say, "I forgive you."

Prayer
God, help me admit it when I am wrong.

Mission for the Week

Please Help Save K.I.D.S.

Our Lady on the River Parish Christian Service is asking for your assistance to help keep “Kids In Distress Services” in operation. It is a non-profit emergency aid

service for children based in St Clair.
You may have read in the Port Huron Newspaper or the Voice Newspaper an article regarding the plight of this service. Times are tough - gas, food and housing

prices - are affecting all of us; but it is even more of a crunch for K.I.D.S. They are funded exclusively by the generosity of the community. They receive no government

assistance or grants - only our help. Funds to pay rent and utilities are available, but only for the next several months.
The children served by K.I.D.S. are from families on hard times or removed from troubled families. Other children have run away from family problems. Just imagine

how frightened they are! K.I.D.S. helps.
On May 17th and 18th, you can help by seeing a representative of Christian Service available at all three Our Lady on the River Parish sites. They will offer

“silhouettes” of boys and girls for your donation. You may write your name or a loved one’s name on it and place it on the giant heart to be displayed in the Church.

Whatever you can offer, will make a difference. Thank you for your consideration. God Bless –See you in Church

A Note From The Principal
Happy Mother’s Day! Mothers are wonderful gifts from God. I know that when I was younger, I didn’t always appreciate the “wisdom” that my mom shared with me, or

the rules that were put in place. Now that I am older, I can look back and say, “You know, Mom was RIGHT!” My position as school principal puts me in contact with many

mothers. Every mother is different; however moms have one common feature. All moms want what is best for their children. Thank you to all of our moms. Hopefully, we

will be able to make more days feel like “Mother’s Day!”
On Tuesday, at 1:30 p.m., we will be crowning the Blessed Mother in our courtyard. Mary truly demonstrated a mother’s love by her support of Jesus in all that He did.

We are blessed to be able to celebrate Mary as our mother.
Today we also celebrate Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is when the apostles were filled with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit gave these men the wisdom and

courage to go out and continue to share the teachings of Jesus with others. We remember Pentecost during Confirmation, as we ask the Holy Spirit to fill our young people

with knowledge as they become fully initiated as Catholics. It is important to remember that the Holy Spirit is always there for us when we need the strength and courage to

do what is right.
Our track and baseball seasons are winding down. It is wonderful to be able to participate in outdoor sports! Please continue to pray for warm, dry weather as our

athletes compete.
It is hard to believe that we are in the “home stretch” of our school year! Progress reports went home this week, meaning that we are in the last half of the last marking

period of the 2007-2008 school year. I am proud of the many accomplishments our students have made. I have also been blessed to welcome students that joined our Holy

Cross family this year. I would be happy to welcome your children or grandchildren to Holy Cross for the 2008-2009 school year! Registration is now underway, and we

have a place for YOU! Please call me at 810-765-3591 to learn more about our programs. I am proud to carry on the tradition of Catholic education here at Holy Cross. I

also feel especially blessed because we are part of such a larger whole—Our Lady on the River Parish. I hope that more members of our parish will take advantage of the

quality Catholic education offered at Holy Cross Catholic School.

40 people were registered

Kids in Church

A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, “Would you like to say the blessing?” “I wouldn’t know what to

say,” the girl replied. “Just say what you hear Mommy say,” the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, ”Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to

dinner?”

Sacred Heart Major Seminary

The first - year theology seminarians at Sacred Heart Seminary wish to Thank Rev. James Lopez & Our Lady on the River Parish for the generous donation for our

Desert Formation Experience in the Holy Land this May. The nature of the Church is such that no one member ever stands alone - we need each other, so please know of

our gratitude for your assistance. Through your generosity, we even surpassed our goal, in part ensuring classes of seminarians will have the privilege of the Desert

Formation Experience.
Please also know of our prayers for you, your family, and all your loved ones as we make our way through the holy places of Jerusalem and ponder the Word of

God in our hearts. We will keep your generosity in mind as we are on pilgrimage, and equally, please pray for our safe travel and that the Word of God would enliven in us

the grace needed for priestly ministry.

FLOWER: Families Live Out the

 Word in Everyday Routines

. . . Receive the Holy Spirit. . . Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.
We all profoundly receive the Holy Spirit in the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, and the Spirit dwells within us. But then, there is the rest of the story: our ability

and our responsibility. We learn to unpack the gifts of the Holy Spirit within our family. Within family, we are given the opportunity to explore, practice and experiment with

how to use wisdom, understanding, good judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, wonder and awe, healing and compassion, and love. Our ability to forgive rather than

retain allows not only us, but all those we encounter, to experience the peace that Christ extends to all of us.

A Family Perspective
by Bud Ozar

A mother’s presence can bring peace to a frightened child, just like Jesus brought peace to the disciples in today’s Gospel. As bread and wine bring us Christ’s presence in

the Eucharist, mothers are the instruments of Christ’s presence in the home.
“I entrusted in them the message you entrusted to me.” On this Mother’s Day, consider that your mother has been entrusted with nurturing your openness to the message of

your vocation. Pray for her with deep gratitude and for your own faithfulness to God’s call. If you are discerning your vocation, contact Father Tim Birney at the Vocation

Office at 313–237–5875, or visit the web at www.vocationsdetroit.org.
