A Note From The Principal
Alleluia! He Is Risen! I pray that as you continue on your Easter journeys you will feel Christ's presence in the world around you.
Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers and grandmothers in our school and parish communities! We have all been blessed with
this wonderful gift. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson approved a resolution making Mother's Day a nationwide observance. I
hope that you remember your mom today, and every day.
On May 4th, we welcomed 15 new inductees to the Our Lady on the River Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. I
am very proud of these students for accepting the challenges that the NJHS provides.
Registration packages for the 2009-2010 school year are now available in the school office for families wanting to
become Holy Cross Crusaders. Please stop in or call the school office at 810-765-3591 to receive a package. We would be happy
to provide you with a tour. We would also like to welcome your child to spend part of a day visiting Holy Cross. Please call the
school office to schedule an appointment. Would you like to learn more about Holy Cross from our parents? We would be happy to
introduce you to a mentor family who can also answer your questions about Holy Cross.
Have you heard about our SCRIP program? Have you started using it to plan for your future Crusader's education? One
change that is taking place is the use of Kroger SCRIP. It makes shopping at Kroger even easier! Please stop in to learn more
about this service. Your children will thank you!

FR. MATT'S MATTERS
VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DINNER MAY 16TH
Don't forget to send in your RSVP Card in the bulletin so you can join us for an evening dinner beginning at 7:00 p.m.,
Saturday. The only qualifications for joining are that you are a parishioner (at least 18 yrs. old) at Our Lady on the River Parish and
you give of your time, effort and ability in a volunteer manner in any of the hundreds of possible ways. Let's spend some time
appreciating each other as God's people, without 'parish business' or problems dominating the moment.
May 17th-The Holy Cross Alumni Breakfast, and Cardinal Mooney HS Graduation. We hope many alumni will make the
breakfast as I know I enjoyed the event last year even though I'm a 'westsider' who graduated from, ahh-hem, Detroit Catholic
Central.
Best wishes and congrats to the Senior Class of CMC, 2009. They remind me how much older I am and how time flies.
So, with God's help, make the most good you can of your youth!
Did you know, would you like to know? Part 2.
Through almost 2000 years, the Catholic Church, founded by and originating in the teaching of Jesus Christ, has been
present in an incredible variety of societies and governmental structures throughout the world. Notable Church wisdom has been
obtained from its experience, at times learned 'the hard way'. Our Church has been wedded to, or completely alienated from, or
coexistent with almost every societal structure known to mankind, not forgetting the Church's own 'governmental' methods.
Two examples: (1). Some say the Church should keep quiet regarding 'the world', especially on economics and
government. (2). A few Catholics think the goal of the Church should be to make every country a Roman Catholic theocracy (ruled
by the religion in the name of God). Both mentalities show ignorance of, or hostility toward the full and correct role of the Church in
the world (…”on earth as it is in heaven”). There are people of all ideologies who distinguish certain doctrines of the Church as
being naïve, unrealistic and needing to 'get with the real world'. Yes, well, aspects of the 'real world' and we, its 'real people', are
precisely what minimally need 'fine tuning'. Christians are not Christians if they just give up and give in. A genuine response to
God's Love in Christ is letting it change us and putting it into action. The more passive part is in prayer. It is not that Christian (or
specifically Catholic) high/difficult moral principles (including social justice) cannot be fulfilled, it is that some know but don't really
try, some don't know much and some don't want to know! Please endure a foray into a little sarcasm: An informed conscience is a
terrible condition. After all, with it we become more eternally responsible for our attitudes and behaviors!
Some Catholics claim they are loyal adherents to all the Church's doctrines of faith and morality. Though we may
sincerely try, if we're really honest, we know that's not fully true. Why? For one reason, we do not know all the teachings of the
New Testament and of the Church. Second, even from among doctrinal principles we know, there is something we ignore because
it demands too much reorientation, and we can only handle so much. We also know of some doctrines with which we flat out
disagree. Who's wrong or right? Conscience, it can be a pest, but a most necessary internal human struggle.
The following from The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994) are examples of official teaching with which (some? many?) U.S.
Catholics have difficulty accepting (at least one). “No. 2353, Fornication is carnal (sexual) union between an unmarried man and
an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good
of the spouses and the procreation and education of children.” Thus, for also other reasons it's sinful even though it often 'feels like
love'.
While rejecting totalitarian and atheistic ideologies of modern times as we see especially in full blown Marxist
'communism or socialism', the Church also states: “No. 2423, Any system in which social relationships are determined entirely by
economic factors is contrary to the nature of the human person…No. 2424, A theory that makes profit the exclusive norm and
ultimate end of economic activity is morally unacceptable. The disordered desire for money cannot but produce perverse effects. It
is one of the causes of the many conflicts which disturb the social order…Every practice that reduces persons to nothing more
than a means of profit enslaves man, leads to idolizing money, and contributes to the spread of atheism. “No. 2425, the Church
has…refused to accept, in the practice of 'capitalism', individualism and the absolute primacy of the law of the marketplace over
human labor…regulating the economy solely by the law of the marketplace fails social justice, for there are many human needs
which cannot be satisfied by the market. Reasonable regulation of the marketplace and economic initiatives…is to be
commended”.
Catholic Christianity today, like Jesus Christ, teaches, proposes and invites, essentially putting forward the challenge:
'choose', or 'wait'. Christ Jesus inaugurates the 'Kingdom of God', about which He insists is not here or there but is already in our
midst like a spiritual wellspring ready to flow within us. Flowing from the interior Kingdom are the outer benefits for all Creation. Thy
Kingdom come…

Associate Pastor.

Sharing the Gospel
When you go into a strange place, you like to stay close to your parents. You trust them to keep you safe. Jesus wants
you to stay close to him every day. Jesus is your vine. You are one of his branches. Learn his teachings and obey them. When
you stay close to Jesus and follow his commandments, you can pray for whatever you want, and God the Father will answer your
prayers.
Prayer
Jesus, help me stay close to you and follow your commandments.
Something to Draw
Draw Jesus as a vine with you, your family and friends for its branches.
Mission for the Week
I will love God more than anything and love my neighbors as myself.
- LPiResourceCenter.com
+Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You, Alleluia!
Today's Gospel brings us Jesus using a metaphor for the seventh time (out of seven), combined with an “I am”
statement. Jesus begins by saying that He is the true vine, the source of growth and fruit-bearing, in a vineyard of true disciples,
the branches, that is tended by the Father. The branches are the focus for us. If you look closely at a grapevine, one of the first
things you might notice about its branches is that it's very difficult to tell them apart individually. All the branches twist and curl
around one another to the point that you can't tell where one starts and another stops. Jesus' use of imagery in today's scripture
saying: “I am the vine, You are the branches”, may be a way of expressing that it's not the achievement of an individual branch or
its status that matters. The quality of branches and fruit depends solely on the quality of their connectedness to the vine.
There needs to be a necessary interrelationship - a relationship characterized by mutuality and indwelling. When it
comes to us, we need to remember to keep connected to Jesus - the only source of authentic spiritual life. The heart of our faith
community is the person of Jesus, the true vine. In the scriptures, in sacraments, in the Eucharist, we grow in an authentic union
with Jesus. “Each of us has been trusted with a wonderful treasure. Guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit Who dwells within and
works in us.” (1Timothy 1:14). Keep connected in receiving our Risen Lord in Holy Communion. We don't have to be perfect, but
we do need to remain in Jesus, and to let Jesus do good within us and through us. We are invited to be channels for God's grace.
God's grace and love always come to us on their way to someone else.
We are reminded to keep together, in this community of faith to which we belong. We need to give up our own desires for
individual achievement in order to become one of many encircling branches - a community of faith united, that is rooted and
nurtured by Jesus, the vine, and points to His quality and albeit, His reputation, not our own. The mission of a branch isn't to look
good or call attention to itself, but to give all the glory to God. “If you remain in Me and My words remain in you.” Remaining in
Jesus means growing, changing, keeping united with the Source of Life, and with one another. in faith, love and peace. “By this is
my Father glorified…”(John 15:8)
Happy Mothers' Day
God's blessings be with all mothers, grandmothers, and those who bring a mother's love into our lives. God grant fullness
of joy and love to our mothers who rejoice in God's Kingdom in Heaven. Thank you, valiant, beautiful, women of all ages for your
self-giving and understanding. May your spouses and/or children (of all ages), honor you today with expressions of gratitude, love
and respect. Happy Mother's Day!

Our 2009 campaign for the Catholic Services Appeal has begun in earnest. Our Lady On The River Parish's share of the CSA
effort is $110,000. A successful campaign will require the participation of every registered parishioner. We are asking each parish
family to prayerfully consider a $100 gift to the CSA either as a one time payment or as a pledge. As a pledge this would be $10
down, and $10 per month for nine months -- or about the price of a large pepperoni pizza per month. Of course we are also most
thankful to those many parishioners who greatly exceed this minimum amount in support of the work of Christ throughout the
Archdiocese. Any funds collected in excess of our target are retuned to the parish without the usual Archdiocesan “tax” on
donated funds.
Unfortunately, any shortfall is considered a debt of the parish and must be paid from our regular income, a debt we can ill
afford. Remember, your contribution is for the ENTIRE YEAR, so please be as generous as possible.
A CSA packet has been mailed to each registered parishioner. If you have not received one, please contact the parish
office at 810-765-3568. You may return your contribution by mail in the envelope provided, by dropping the envelope in the
collection basket, or returning it to the office. May God bless you for your generosity!

Parish Lenten Prayer for Vocations Comments(continued)
Every evening my husband and I sit beside the fireplace to pray. With a big family, there are many needs, spiritually,
physically, materially, etc. When we had the privilege of having the “Vocational Cross” for a week, we felt very blest. The cross
was next to our Divine Mercy picture as we prayed. Part of our evening prayer is for vocations. We have been blest and one of our
grandsons is in the seminary. Praying for him and the other seminarians is part of everyday prayer.
Joan Cullen
We all know how much we need more priests. I think people are praying more for vocations than ever before. In time we
will see the results. Through the Holy Spirit, many, many more young women and men will come to give their lives to God.

The experience at the table between my family not only bonded us more to the Holy Spirit, but to each other as well.
This was a truly extraordinary experience. Having the crucifix in our home was a great honor. When we gathered together for
prayer, I felt the Lord's presence. It was a nice change in our house. To have four people to sit at one table, two teenagers and two
parents without one disagreement was the work of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this
important vocation venture. If God calls my children to be a religious brother or sister, I will support them wholeheartedly. God
bless.
The Tiano Family
It was great to pray for vocations on behalf of the universal Church. It wasn't easy to get someone to come forward to
accept the responsibility at St. Mark. Father Sig chided some to get them to do it each week.
The power of prayer is endless.
In this prayerful mission, grant to us your love and guidance. Instill your grace and love in all those contemplating religious service
in Your Name.

How Would You Describe Your Faith Right Now?
A.) very strong right now;
B.) almost down to a thread;
C.) just inching along;
D.) striving to better itself;
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the normal way in which adults come into full, conscious, active participation
in the Catholic Church. The RCIA is NOT a program, is NOT a class. RCIA is primarily a journey of faith, a process, responding to
the call and work of God in one's life. The RCIA is for non-baptized adults, for baptized Christians who desire full communion, and
for Catholics who seek to complete the initiation sacraments. If you or someone you know is interested, please give the parish
office your name and phone number or fill out and return the form below, for an invitation to the Fall Inquiry Gathering.

Preventing Spread of the Swine Flu Virus
The Archdiocese of Detroit is following guidance from the U.S. bishops and acting on the advice of local medical
professionals to help mitigate the potential spread of the swine flu virus. As it relates to the Mass, we remind you that it is
perfectly acceptable to forego a handshake at the “Sign of Pease,” and to forego drinking from the common cup during
Communion.
You also can do your part to help keep everyone healthy by using common sense, practicing good hygiene, and staying
home if you are sick.
For more information, visit the Archdiocese of Detroit Website at www.aodonline.org/fluadvisory.

A Blessing and Prayer Tribute to all Mothers
“Blessed be all mothers
Who have come into our lives
Whose kindness, care and loving
Remain with us to guide.
Your inspiration in us
Made us strive in every way
Especially to remember
Helping others make our day.
Mothers, this little tribute
Flows directly from our heart
You are so loved and cherished
Invaluable, one and all, you are.”

FLOWER: Families Live Out the Word in Everyday Routines
He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.
You are already pruned…
The goal of every parent and caring adult is to someday say, “You have been pruned…go and bear much fruit.” Through
love, discipline, and challenge, we strive to shape conscience and instill solid foundations so that our children and youth will
remain connected to God in their adult lives. What is our relation-ship with God? How do we remain connected to God? How is
this connection modeled
