FR. MATT'S MATTERS
Seven and Seven, Seven and The One
Adequately confused? I figure it's good to be on this 'Ascension' Sunday, which is not the most 'down to earth' concept. So I begin this article referring to the traditional seven deadly sins and a contemporary commentary by the Vatican describing a combination of (seven?) personal and social sins with social consequences. Also I will later look to the seven Sacraments with THE ONE Sacrament which rates first priority despite some prevalent notions.
The Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus are His glorification and 'going' to the Father. Why? So He could send Himself in the Holy Spirit to be everywhere and always with and in those who would learn of and accept Him. But there is no need for a Savior if there is no generally alienated, broken and sinful human condition. To help define this condition the traditional list of the deadly sins informs us (if we don't already know) of seven of our 'internal issues': Pride (egotism); Envy (jealousy); Anger (often a destructive emotion); Sloth (laziness especially in our relationship to God); Greed (an often glorified United States capitalist 'virtue'); Gluttony (compensatory, deficit eating and drinking); Lust (the dark side of human sexuality, yes, there is one). Remember, Jesus told us sin begins inside us, without any necessary temptations from outside 'demonic' sources.
Some media portrayed an interview in March with Vatican Bishop Gianfranco Girotti as a statement of 7 new deadly sins. Actually he and the Pope spoke of a set of social sins to draw attention to sinful acts that have social ramifications. Here's my summary: 1. billions of people preoccupied with the acquisition of non-essential material goods, a.k.a. consumerism; 2. Making/selling destructive pleasure drugs for monetary profit (or buying/using them); 3. Decisions/lifestyles which create poverty for others; 4. Excessive accumulation of wealth by individuals; 5. Ten or less percent of a society owning/controlling 50 percent or more of the wealth; 6. Poisoning/polluting/ruining the natural environment (God's Creation); 7. Various bioethical violations, e.g. carrying out what may be or are immoral scientific, biological, genetic experiments (none the less wrongful even when curing disease is a desired result).
A primary basic moral principle many people/leaders worldwide DO NOT seem to comprehend and thus follow is: the end does not justify the means, a.k.a., a desired good result does not justify using wrongful (e.g. violent) tactics.
To mention two examples, our Catholic Church knows that avoiding a burdensome, unwanted pregnancy does not justify procured abortion of the developing fetal human being. In the same principle, the planned removal of one country's corrupt leadership (who are not waging war) to hopefully have a good end result, does not give other countries moral justification to use violence (wage war) to do so. (Please do not take my use of this 2nd example, from the current and last Pope, as a lack of support for our country's personnel) . A constant theme of contemporary Catholic teaching (as what should be common wisdom) is that violence begets violence. There is a Source of antidotes to the deadliness of sin in the world. More regarding the Eucharist later, stay close to Jesus, no matter what,
In His Love, Fr. Matt Ellis.

A Note From The Principal
ALLELUIA! Our recent burst of cold weather has really made me grateful for the springtime. Despite all of the warm days we had, it is possible to go back to the cool weather again. The same is true in our spiritual lives. We sometimes lose sight of the Son, but we find our way back. Our flowerbeds are coming to life. Our beautiful Marian garden in the courtyard is also starting to bloom. As we begin the month of May, we honor Mary, our Blessed Mother. Our school May Crowning will be on Tuesday, May 13th at 1:30 p.m. in the courtyard.
As the flowers on our grounds bloom, it is easy to find similarities between the flowers and the people who make up our world. Some of the flowers push through the ground as it is thawing, desperate to see the sun and provide color to our world. They may last for only a little while, or they may continue to bloom strong and bright. Some flowers wait until the peak time or temperature conditions to make themselves known. There are also those flowers that haven't bloomed yet. Maybe they are just “late bloomers” or perhaps they have shared their fruits with us for the last time. As you plant your gardens, think about what kind of flower you might be.
Spring can also be called the season of change. There are many positive changes taking place at Holy Cross Catholic School. Tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. we will be welcoming 36 students at the first induction ceremony for the Our Lady on the River Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. I am proud to be a part of this addition to our school program.
This year, the Holy Cross Drama Club has also been making great strides. We will be presenting Through the Looking Glass, on Wednesday, May 28th at 6:00 p.m. in the Holy Cross Gymnasium. Admission is free and good will donations will be accepted to help us continue building our program. We hope to see you there!
Another wonderful blessing that this school year has brought us is the return of preschool to our academic program. It has been so refreshing to see the youngest students begin building their foundations here at Holy Cross.
There are many great reasons to make Holy Cross Catholic School your PARTNER in education. If you would like to learn more about Holy Cross Catholic School, I invite you to call me at 810-765-3591 to arrange a personal appointment and school tour.
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund
Principal
“Jesus Christ is the source of life; Let us praise the Lord of Glory, our Savior and our God, Alleluia!”
Feast of the Ascension
The U.S. Catholic Bishops, for the Church in our province, have transferred the solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, which is today!
“The meaning of Christ's Ascension,” writes Pope Benedict XVI, “expresses our belief that in Christ the humanity that we all share has entered into the inner life of God in a new and hitherto unheard of way. It means that human beings have found an everlasting place in God.” It would be a mistake to interpret the Ascension as the “temporary absence of Christ from the world.” Rather, “we go to heaven to the extent that we go to Jesus Christ and enter into Him.” Heaven is a person: “Jesus Himself is what we call 'heaven'!”
Pentecost Sunday
Next Sunday is PENTECOST! The birthday of the Church! The story of Pentecost is a real stunner! Jesus' disciples, who had been so fearful and hesitant since Jesus' Ascension are suddenly transformed into fearless leaders, for whom nothing seems impossible. Our faith says that the Holy Spirit of God is everywhere at all times. When we, as disciples, open our hearts and accepts, receive, and take in of the Spirit of God, it makes all the difference. We celebrate Pentecost because we need to do what the disciples did accept and receive within us the Holy Spirit Who has been present to us from the moment of our birth and given in Baptism. For a number of years, many parishes traditionally encourage members to wear red clothing next Sunday on Pentecost, and bring a red geranium to Church which are later planted outdoors to beautify the parish grounds. It's something we're all invited to do.
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
What a delightful evening! Nearly two hundred volunteers from Our Lady on the River Parish gathered for a great time of love, laughter, visiting, and delicious dinner catered by All About Catering. The enjoyable music was provided by Don and Maxine Zamborowski. The lovely daffodils came from Judy Beauvais' garden and the pretty carnations were a gift from Mr. Christopher Ludwig. The hospitality and table set-ups were prepared by Our Lady on the River Parish Staff. Our pastor, Fr. Lopez, blessed the evening and all present as he prayed grace before our meal. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow!
Trivia Time
Kudos to John & Joann Vance who were the first to call in before publication, the correct response to last week's trivia, noting that St. Peter was the person quoted in Acts 3:6. New Question: In which of St. Paul's letters and in what chapter can we find the “fruits” (peace, patience, kindness, etc.) of the Holy Spirit listed?
May God help us to pray “Come, Holy Spirit”, with hearts that are truly open. Have a great week.
With prayerful love,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

Fundraiser
for the LaBelle Family
Many of you already know that Pat LaBelle (husband of our parish secretary, Pam, and dad to Calvin in 2nd grade) has been very ill for the past six months. We're happy to report that Pat is home, having been released from U of M Hospital last week after a two-month stay. After he is stronger, Pat will be facing open heart surgery and more recuperation.
A catastrophic illness can really set a family back financially between the loss of income and the expenses of treatment (without even considering the emotional strain). Therefore, Holy Cross School is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser for the LaBelle Family.
The dinner will be held on Sunday, June 8th, from noon until 5:00 p.m. in the Holy Cross Activity Center. Along with the all-you-care-to-eat spaghetti meal, the second grade will host a bake sale, and there will be 50-50 raffles running all afternoon.
Many people have been asking Pam's co-workers if there's anything they can do to help. Well, now there is! Plan to attend the dinner, with as many of your friends and relatives as you can round up! The cost of the meal will be whatever you care to donate: we don't want to price anyone out of coming, nor to limit your generosity.
If you are interested in working at the dinner, please contact Mrs. Steinmetz in the school office 810-765-3591. To donate baked goods, please leave a message for second grade teacher Mr. Burleson or with Mrs. Steinmetz.
We're also looking for donated desserts for the dinner. Please mark your calendar today for June 8th! Hope to see you there!!

This weekend marks the beginning of the 2008 Catholic Services Appeal. Please accept Cardinal Adam Maida's invitation to prayerfully consider a pledge to this year's CSA.
This year's Catholic Services Appeal theme is “Bridging the Generations.” In the Archdiocese of Detroit, generations of generous believers support an abundance of ministries and services funded by the CSA. Their gifts allow Cardinal Adam Maida, his auxiliary bishops and Central Services staff to touch the lives of thousands in southeast Michigan each year. To learn about ministries and services provided by the archdiocesan departments of Communications, Education and Parish Life and Services, as well as the Metropolitan Tribunal, The Michigan Catholic, the Vocations Office and Sacred Heart Major Seminary, please go to www.aodonline.org.
The Catholic Services Appeal is a pledge program. Your pledge may be paid with a down payment at appeal time (optional) and nine additional monthly payments. After your initial payment, you will receive monthly payment envelopes in the mail.

Pentecost Sunday
Notice correction of date
As we have done in the past, on Pentecost Sunday (May 10th-11th), you are encouraged to get into the 'spirit' of the day by wearing red clothing, and bringing a red geranium(s) to Mass and placing it around the Altar. Your gift of flowers will then be planted around our Church grounds. So mark your calendars, set aside some red clothing, and set your sights on a red geranium!

Please Help Save K.I.D.S.
Our Lady on the River Parish Christian Service is asking for your assistance to help keep “Kids In Distress Services” in operation. It is a non-profit emergency aid service for children based in St Clair.
You may have read in the Port Huron Newspaper or the Voice Newspaper an article regarding the plight of this service. Times are tough - gas, food and housing prices - are affecting all of us; but it is even more of a crunch for K.I.D.S. They are funded exclusively by the generosity of the community. They receive no government assistance or grants - only our help. Funds to pay rent and utilities are available, but only for the next several months.
The children served by K.I.D.S. are from families on hard times or removed from troubled families. Other children have run away from family problems. Just imagine how frightened they are! K.I.D.S. helps.
On May 17th and 18th, you can help by seeing a representative of Christian Service available at all three Our Lady on the River Parish sites. They will offer “silhouettes” of boys and girls for your donation. You may write your name or a loved one's name on it and place it on the giant heart to be displayed in the Church. Whatever you can offer, will make a difference. Thank you for your consideration.
God Bless -See you in Church

Kids in Church
A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin (5), and Ryan (3). The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. “If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.' Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, “Ryan, you be Jesus!”
