A Note From The Principal
Alleluia! He Is Risen! I pray that as you continue on your Easter journeys you will feel Christ’s presence in the world around you. We encounter Jesus every day through our interactions with others. Jesus is in all of our hearts. Do we recognize Him in others? Do we recognize Him in ourselves?
I hope that you had the opportunity to join with the children of our school and parish as they furthered their initiation in the church through the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. These Masses were beautiful celebrations of the bond that our families nurture in faith. I am grateful that Holy Cross Catholic School and Our Lady on the River Parish are able to join with our families in the faith formation of your children.
It is hard to believe that the school year is winding down. It has truly flown by! The academic, spiritual, and social growth of our children is evident, not only through their grades, but how they interact with others. As we wind down for the year, we begin our track season. Track meets are held on the first three Saturdays of May at the track behind Marine City High School. The parochial schools from our league come together for these events. Please pray for beautiful weather on these Saturdays.
Do you have a potential kindergarten student for next year? On Monday, May 11th, Ms. Ward will be hosting a “Day in the Life” event for students who will be five-years-old by December 1st. Please contact the school so that we may register your child for this wonderful event!
Registration packages for the 2009-2010 school year are now available in the school office for families wanting to become Holy Cross Crusaders. Please stop in or call the school office at 810-765-3591 to receive a package. We would also be happy to provide you with a tour. We would also like to welcome your child to spend part of a day visiting Holy Cross. Please call the school office to schedule an appointment. Would you like to learn more about Holy Cross from our parents? We would be happy to introduce you to a mentor family who can also answer your questions about Holy Cross.
Have you heard about our SCRIP program? Have you started using it to plan for your future Crusader’s education? One change that is taking place is the use of Kroger SCRIP. It makes shopping at Kroger even easier! Please stop in to learn more about this service. Your children will thank you!

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the normal way in which adults come into full, conscious, active participation in the Catholic Church. The RCIA is NOT a program, is NOT a class. RCIA is primarily a journey of faith, a process, responding to the call and work of God in one’s life. The RCIA is for non-baptized adults, for baptized Christians who desire full communion, and for Catholics who seek to complete the initiation sacraments. If you or someone you know is interested, please give the parish office your name and phone number or fill out and return the form below, for an invitation to the Fall Inquiry Gathering.

FR. MATT’S MATTERS
Sacramental Confirmation has been conferred this past week, and congratulations to the confirmandi, their parents, sponsors and our parish community. We pray that those confirmed have welcomed God’s Holy Spirit into the depths of their being, so they may pray well and often, attend Eucharist and make good decisions in the coming years. Thanks to the many adults who’ve been personally involved in the ministry of Confirmation and First Communion preparation. The First Eucharist Masses were resounding moments of sacramental grace and joy, as many folks have indicated. The ministry of catechist/religious education teacher, as important as it is, is only supplemental to the vocation of Christian parents/guardians as the children’s primary teachers/examples in the ways of our faith. The hope that the seeds planted will take lasting root lies more with parents. Speaking of parents, please continue your prayer intentions for Fr. Jim’s dad, Joseph.
WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS is Sunday, May 3rd. Along with May 3rd being the 4th Sunday of Easter, there is the tradition of referring to this Sunday as Good Shepherd Sunday, due to the Gospel readings each year coming from chapter 10 of John’s Gospel wherein Jesus speaks of Himself as the Good Shepherd. We pray for vocations in the Catholic Church to the priesthood and religious life. These prayers need to be accompanied by some refined understandings.
I attempt to make these points succinctly, in particular regarding the ordained priesthood: a real and healthy vocation to the priesthood is usually nurtured to fruition through many years growing up in at least a relatively functional, ‘faith-full’ (yet not fanatical), sincerely practicing Catholic family household; one or two vocations talks are not going to draw out something that’s not already present; the priesthood actually involves two vocations, one to the priesthood and one to celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom of God; with mandatory celibacy attached to the sacrament of priesthood, if a man is to become a priest, he needs at least some inkling (individual ability, since ‘grace builds on nature’) to live life without dating and sex, and without wife and children, otherwise he’s asking for serious future trouble; an inkling towards celibacy (for whatever reasons) does not equate to having a vocation to the priesthood, and the personal sense of a calling to the priesthood does not mean celibacy is also one’s vocation; if celibacy for the individual is mostly sacrifice and burden, beware; because a man is in the seminary does not mean his priesthood ordination should be seen as a done deal; if he leaves it may be good because he has discerned God’s will to be a calling to another form of serving God; we need to pray primarily for prayerful, church-involved, faithful, loving and inspiring marriage vocations in our Church, without which the other vocations requiring ‘sacrificial love’ will remain anachronistic (prevalent in a bygone era); if an eighteen or nineteen year old thinks he knows what he in for in the priesthood, he’d better think again; what is needed is a mature decision aided by several years in a continuing spiritual and psychological direction process; we need to pray for aspiring priests who are open to what the God of Jesus Christ needs in His priests, that is, men without preset ideologies and agendas, who are not ‘know it alls’ ready to correct what they ‘know’ is wrong with the Church and other people in general. Nor does Christ need namby-pamby priests. Anyway, those are a few of my points, and from what I’ve seen and heard, they are not exclusively my own. And don’t get me wrong about my warning points, I’ve found no other ‘career’ that would be better for me to be the best me God has called me to be!
(paraphrasing my late spiritual director, Fr. Ed Farrell).
With prayers,
Fr. Matt Ellis

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He wants you to help your family and friends. Jesus wants to guide you like a shepherd guides the sheep. Do what you can to help others. Bring in a bag of groceries. Take someone a drink of water. Get a blanket for someone. Or just sit down and listen to a friend's funny or sad story. Then you will be a good shepherd just like Jesus.
Prayer
Jesus, show me ways to help my family and friends.
Something to Draw
Draw yourself carrying in a bag of groceries for your parents.
Mission for the Week
Every morning I will ask my parents, "How may I help you today?"
- LPiResourceCenter.com
Give thanks to the Lord, Our Good Shepherd,
For His love endures for ever.
Today, Good Shepherd Sunday is also a celebration of World Day of Prayer for Vocations. The Church honors all Christian vocations, and today, invites us to reflect on our individual call to respond to God’s voice. Pope Benedict XVI, in “Response to the Divine Initiative”, stresses that ”prayer for vocations should be continuous and trusting.” “Our first duty,” the Pope says, “is to keep alive in families and in parishes, the appeal to the divine initiative with unceasing prayer..” “The Catechism of the Catholic Church rightly reminds us that God’s free initiative requires a free response on the part of men and women, a positive response which welcomes the Lord’s loving initiative.” Whatever the call in your life, “trust in God and follow Jesus faithfully, and you will be witnesses of the joy that flows from intimate union with Him.”
God is calling forth men and women in every vocation. Today is a day to celebrate the call of each baptized Christian, including single and married persons. Pray for those being called to religious, consecrated life and priesthood. Pray that they and those who already serve the Church as priests, deacons, consecrated religious, may have supportive family and friends and parishioners to encourage, accept, respect, and love them.
At each Church site of our parish today, we begin again to offer the Prayer Resource Manual for Vocations. At the 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., Mass, families and/or individuals are invited to take home the Parish Manual and Crucifix for the week of prayer for vocations. We ask that it be returned to the parish offices by Thursday of each week in preparation for the next Sunday.
Who Cares About the Value of Human Life???
What would happen if all of us really cared about each other? What would happen if all of us imitated Jesus? Who gives us the image of the Good Shepherd, a person who cares? Maybe we would find the value of every life to be priceless and truly precious. Jesus says today: “I know mine and mine know me.” Does knowing a person or people affect our attitude, our giving, our accepting, our caring, and our loving??
For the next several Sundays of the Easter season, we will be hearing the “I am” statements of Jesus in John’s Gospel. Today, Jesus says twice: “I am the Good Shepherd”. It is the shepherd’s voice that is important. We need to be attentive and responsive to the voice of the gentle Good Shepherd. Jesus knows each and every one of us by name and gives each of us the daily care and safekeeping we need to live our lives fully in peace and joy.
Most of us listening to our own recorded voices on voice mail or answering machines, wonder sometimes if that is really us! What we sound like to others is not always exactly the way we sound to ourselves. Jesus is telling us that He will keep calling us by name in the same gentle, caring voice, and when we begin to follow, He will keep leading in the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The next time you have trouble getting to sleep, don’t count sheep, talk to the Good Shepherd!
May God keep you safe in His care,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

Parish Lenten Prayer for Vocations Comments
(continued)
There is a great need for us all to pray for vocations in the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, married life and single life. This Lenten Prayer Book for Vocations allowed us to realize the great need for everyone to pray for our church.
P.S. We all are called to ministry in the Church and all of us MUST answer God’s call for our lives. We must continue to spread the Gospel of Jesus and be a true witness in this world. Thank you for the opportunity to reflect on our need for vocations….
Laethem Family
Dear Family in Christ,
This has been a short journey of prayer in a much needed sea of need. As I read each word and listened to what it held, I was now internalizing and feeling what I was saying. We need to remember to pray for our present clergy and thank them for their love and guidance…
Barbara Persyn
This was a perfect Lenten exercise to finish us during the holiest of weeks. Each evening, before dinner, we would pray in front of the crucifix which gave us an opportunity for discussion during dinner. We are currently hosting two exchange students, both of whom are Christian, but neither of whom are Catholic. We have shared our religious and family traditions and they have shared theirs with us. This practice gave us an opportunity to celebrate and begin a new tradition with all of us together as a family. We praise God for this blessing and pray that all His people are open to His call for their life’s vocation.

Prayer for Vocations
O God, Father of all Mercies, Provider of a bountiful Harvest, send Your Graces upon those You have called to gather the fruits of Your labor; preserve and strengthen them in their lifelong service of you.
Open the hearts of Your children that they may discern Your Holy Will; inspire in them a love and desire to surrender themselves to serving others in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ.
Teach all Your faithful to follow their respective paths in life guided by Your Divine Word and Truth. Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels, and Saints, humbly hear our prayers and grant Your Church's needs, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Announcing New Altar Care Team
Thank you to our new volunteers that have stepped up and offered to form a new Altar Care Team for St. Catherine Church: Linda Neumann, Rose Rzeppa, Jan Long, Josephine Keller, Cheryl Tatro, and Jean Moran.
Many thanks to them for sharing their talents in this ongoing parish ministry, and to Matt & Carol Fett and Linda Abraam who assisted with preparing the Church for Holy Week.
God bless you all
Words to Live By
Every genuine human love is a reflection of the love that is God himself, to the point where the First Letter of St. John says: “The man without love has known nothing of God; for God is love.”

Scripture Class to Resume
The scripture class that was held during Lent and covered the high points of the Old Testament, has resumed by request. We will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday in the Holy Cross School Fine Arts Building (old convent).
We will begin with the study of the Gospels and the life of Jesus, picking up where we left off before Easter. Hope to see all who were there for the Old Testament section and invite any one else interested to join us for the New Testament section.

Parish Mission Statement
We, the people of Our Lady on the River Parish state in a common voice that we are a united Catholic community, bringing together three unique sites, each one being essential to the whole.
We welcome all people into our community. We support the human and spiritual needs of each person with dignity, which strengthens our bond as members of one Body sustained by the Eucharist.
Guided by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to the formation in our Catholic faith at all ages. We will provide a deep and firm foundation for our youth through Catholic education and good example.
We reach out to the greater community through our acts of service and prayer through the intercession of Mary, our Blessed Mother.
Purpose of the Parish Council
The purpose of the Parish Council is to assist in realizing the mission of our Parish and to advance our spiritual growth. Our primary role is that of a consultative body, making recommendations to the Pastor about the faith-life of our Parish and it’s pastoral ministry. As the primary structure within the parish, the Parish Council coordinates and unifies the activity of the commissions and organizations of the parish.

Spring Cleaning Time
Spring Cleaning of Holy Cross Church will be Tuesday, May 5th following the 9:00 a.m. Mass. We will be washing and polishing the pews and dusting all areas of the main parts of church.
We will need many hands - men also for high areas. Bring pails, rags and polish.
This weekend we begin our 2009 campaign for the Catholic Services Appeal. Our Lady On The River Parish's share of the CSA effort is $110,000. The CSA supplies the funds required to support the work of Christ throughout the Archdiocese including Catholic Social Services, Sacred Heart Seminary, Catholic education, The Michigan Catholic and Catholic Television among many others. Please review your brochure to see the myriad of ways the CSA works throughout our Archdiocese.
To meet our goal, every parish family must help. If we do not meet out goal, the parish must make up the difference from our regular collection. If we exceed our goal, we retain the excess without payment of the usual Archdiocesan “tax”. For example, if each parish family gave just $100, we would make our goal and be able to retain a substantial balance to support the needs of our parish. Again this year, we are asking that you consider a pledge rather than a cash gift. Even a small pledge of $10 or $15 per month can become a substantial gift over the nine-month pledge period. Remember, your contribution is for the ENTIRE YEAR, so please prayerfully consider making the most generous gift possible given your other financial obligations.
This year all the CSA envelopes are being mailed out. If you have not received yours by next Sunday, please notify the office. You may return your contribution by mail in the envelope provided, by dropping the envelope in the collection basket, or returning it to the office. May God bless you for your generosity
