Today's Gospel from St. John tells us that Jesus is sending to us an advocate, or his Spirit of Truth. It is the Spirit of Truth that enables us to believe without seeing. So

many people cannot accept certain things in life unless they participate in the event, listen in on the conversation or see it with their own eyes. And if they cannot be a part

of the event or activity, they create their own version of how things should be or what their view of truth is from their perspective. That is what we call rumor or gossip because

there is only partial truth behind their views. The reason I mention this is because a rumor was spread about me recently at my former assignment.
Apparently, I was watching a Cardinal Mooney baseball game and I got hit in the eye with a foul ball and needed several stitches to close this big gash above my

eye. The truth is: I arrived to watch the baseball game and a player was being taken to the hospital right about the same time. How I ended up with stitches and not the

player is beyond me. I was not even close to the playing field. I was too busy inspecting the leftover hotdogs! But, I am grateful that someone called to clear up the incident.

I am healthy and without stitches at least for the time being. The point is that people with good intentions sometimes do more harm than good with the things that they say.
This incident reminds me what I am still learning in my role as a pastor in regards to what can be spoken to a parish member or what needs to be kept silent

regarding Church matters. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches in its chapter about Life in Christ, a sub-section entitled Respect for Truth: “Charity and respect for

the truth should dictate the response to every request for information or communication. The good and safety of others, respect for privacy, and the common good are

sufficient reasons for being silent about what ought not be known or for making use of a discreet language. The duty to avoid scandal often commands strict discretion. No

one is bound to reveal the truth to someone who does not have the right to know it.”
So, if I ever take a foul ball to the eye and need stitches, everyone will know it because I'd be happy to share my story of trauma. However, if we truly invite the

Spirit of Truth to dwell within us we will allow the Truth to lead and guide us, and not giving into the temptations of rumor and gossip.
THIS AND THAT: My thanks go to all our volunteers who make Our Lady on the River a strong, faith-filled community. The appreciation dinner is a small token of

our thanks to all who give of their time and energy to build upon our church. Words cannot express my gratitude. Also, congratulations to all our children who received First

Holy Communion last week. Fr. Matt and I were grateful to all who made the celebration meaningful not only for the children but for us as well. My thanks go to all the

teachers and parents who helped make the day possible.
All my prayers for a good and holy week,
		Fr. Jim

A Note From The Principal

ALLELUIA! Spring is finally here! Our gardens are blooming with new life! Our children are filled with joy as they are now able to enjoy the outside rather than being

confined to the building. We are blessed to be able to share in their energy!
It takes a lot of people to make both our school and our parish successful-and a great number of these people act as volunteers. By volunteering, we share our time and

talent, which is true stewardship. At our Friday Mass on May 2nd, we pray for all who volunteer in our community. I hope that you will take some time for yourself on that

day and join our 9:00 a.m. liturgy. I would like to thank everyone who helps Holy Cross Catholic School and Our Lady on the River Parish such a great place to grow in

God's love.
Our boys' baseball team is taking advantage of this nice weather as they compete each weekend. What a difference from the beginning of the season! Our track team

is also able to get out in the sun and practice. Track meets are the first three Saturdays in May.
On Monday, May 5th, we will be inducting 36 students in grades 6-8 into the Our Lady on the River Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. Our ceremony will

take place in the church at 6:30 p.m.
Registration is underway for our preschool and elementary programs. With the new light that spring brings into our world, I encourage you to explore the new light that

Holy Cross Catholic School can bring into your family. We are proud to be able to educate the WHOLE child! We do this by continuing the faith formation that you have

instilled in your sons and daughters through their Baptism. If you would like more information regarding any of our programs, please do not hesitate to send me an email at

principal@holycrossonline.net or call me at 810-765-3591 to arrange a personal visit. I look forward to becoming your partner in education.
Have you been thinking about coming to Holy Cross, but you aren't sure if a Catholic education is right for you? Are you worried about the cost of a Holy Cross

education? There are many ways in which you can reduce your tuition cost. Utilizing SCRIP is a no-hassle way to reduce your tuition while maintaining your current

shopping habits. Everyone needs to buy gas and groceries - put the rising costs to work in your favor by using SCRIP!
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within

walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are in effect, ringing your doorbell.
Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the SVdP so that together we can help the suffering and poor. Through your donations, together we

can help the poor of our parish and community.
“Christ dwells among us; Let us give thanks and praise!”

Thank You
Many thanks are due to all those who participated in the Parish Spring Blood Drive held at Holy Cross Church last Sunday. Whether you were a volunteer, a Red

Cross worker, a potential donor, or a donor, Thanks and God's blessings. Heartfelt thanks to Debbie Vernier for her generous preparation, presence, and serving of a

wonderful continental breakfast and delicious lunch for the workers and volunteers. Her cheerful generosity brought a peacefulness to the day and accolades from all whom

she served. God bless you, Debbie! Sincere gratitude to the selfless giving of the volunteers who spent time Sunday in the service of others. Thank you: Sue Abel, Sister

Geraldine Arnold, Joyce Austin, Judy Beauvais, Ann & Paul Billock, Rosemary Brendle, Virginia D'Antoni, Mary Endres, Amy Greenia, Beverly Haggbert, Pat Johnston, Jan

Long, Sandy Malik, Shirley Sadlowski. A million thanks to the forty-one generous men and women who came to offer the gift of life through a blood donation. Thank you for

caring and for the 37 pints of blood donated by you to the American Red Cross to help others. God knows you by name, you are precious, and God loves each of you!
Trivia Time
Thanks to those who responded to last week's question…”When a person looks in a mirror, does he see himself as other people see him?” Elmer D'Ambrosio,

John & Joanne Vance & Pat Johnston gave it quite some thought!
No, the person does not, because ordinary mirrors turn a person around. In order to get a true picture of himself as others see him, a person should take two mirrors and set

them up exactly at right angles to each other! (From “Modern Quiz Book” published by the Haskin Service.
New Question: Here's a double-header: Who said: “I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you…..? Where can one find the whole scripture passage?
May, Mary's Month
This Thursday brings us into a new month. May, Mary's month, directs our thoughts to our Blessed Mother and to our need to honor her as our mother, mother of

the Church, and our friend. St. Bernard and many other saints say that it was never heard at any time or in any place that Mary refused to hear the prayers of her children on

earth. Mary's motherhood of love continues until all come to know and respond to God's grace in bringing us to her Son. Mary shares fully in the resurrection of Jesus.
In today's Gospel, Jesus promises the gift of the Spirit of truth. Mary was present with the disciples in the Cenacle for nine days awaiting this same Gift of the Holy Spirit.

We, with Mary, are privileged to receive this Gift.
During this continuing season of Eastertide, through Mary's intercession, may we of 'Our Lady on the River Parish Community' strive to live and grow in God's Holy Spirit

Who works in many ways in our lives and renews our faith.
God bless everyone's week with joy and peace,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

Sharing the Gospel

Jesus gave us two commandments. The first is Love God above all things and the second is Love your neighbor as yourself. Make good choices. Put God first in

your life. Say a prayer before getting out of bed every morning. Say a prayer every night. Treat others like you would like to be treated. If you love Jesus and obey his

commandments, the Holy Spirit will be sent to help you.

Prayer
Jesus, help me be kind and helpful to my family and friends.

Mission for the Week
Every morning and every night I will thank God for my family and friends.

Pillowcase Update

Through the generosity of a lot of caring people, we made 513 pillowcases. (At our last “sewing bee” 17 women made 111 of them). Thank you to everyone who

helped in any way to make this possible. The pillowcases are given to children with cancer or a life changing illness at Children's Hospital or St. John Hospital.
We are still in need of bright material (100% cotton, 7/8 of a yard print for the body and 1/3 of a yard print/solid for the border), thread, quart size bags and money

or JoAnn Fabric SCRIP. You can drop off these items at the Algonac Water Lily, 1059 St Clair River Drive, Algonac 810-794-7673.
Our next “sewing bee” will be Thursday, May 15th at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Algonac (Mill & Marsh) starting at 9:00 a.m. We will need people to sew

(bring machine) iron (bring iron & ironing board) and cut out pillowcases. Please call Linda Neumann at 810-794-4605 or Rose Rzeppa at 810-794-3187 if you can help out

or have any questions.

Holy Cross School

Fundraiser
for the LaBelle Family

Many of you already know that Pat LaBelle (husband of our parish secretary, Pam, and dad to Calvin in 2nd grade) has been very ill for the past six months. We're

happy to report that Pat is home, having been released from U of M Hospital last week after a two-month stay. After he is stronger, Pat will be facing open heart surgery and

more recuperation.
A catastrophic illness can really set a family back financially between the loss of income and the expenses of treatment (without even considering the emotional strain).

Therefore, Holy Cross School is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser for the LaBelle Family.
The dinner will be held on Sunday, June 8th, from noon until 5:00 p.m. in the Holy Cross Activity Center. Along with the all-you-care-to-eat spaghetti meal, the second

grade will host a bake sale, and there will be 50-50 raffles running all afternoon.
Many people have been asking Pam's co-workers if there's anything they can do to help. Well, now there is! Plan to attend the dinner, with as many of your friends and

relatives as you can round up! The cost of the meal will be whatever you care to donate: we don't want to price anyone out of coming, nor to limit your generosity.
If you are interested in working at the dinner, please contact Mrs. Steinmetz in the school office 810-765-3591. To donate baked goods, please leave a message for

second grade teacher Mr. Burleson or with Mrs. Steinmetz.
We're also looking for donated desserts for the dinner. Please mark your calendar today for June 8th! Hope to see you there!!

A Message from His Holiness
 Pope Benedict XVI.

from The Homily at Yankee Stadium
 Sunday, April 20, 2008

Each day, throughout this land, you and so many of your neighbors pray to the Father in the Lord's own words: "Thy Kingdom come". This prayer needs to shape

the mind and heart of every Christian in this nation. It needs to bear fruit in the way you lead your lives and in the way you build up your families and your communities. It

needs to create new "settings of hope" (cf. Spe Salvi, 32ff.) where God's Kingdom becomes present in all its saving power.

Praying fervently for the coming of the Kingdom also means being constantly alert for the signs of its presence, and working for its growth in every sector of

society. It means facing the challenges of present and future with confidence in Christ's victory and a commitment to extending his reign. It means not losing heart in the

face of resistance, adversity and scandal. It means overcoming every separation between faith and life, and countering false gospels of freedom and happiness. It also

means rejecting a false dichotomy between faith and political life, since, as the Second Vatican Council put it, "there is no human activity - even in secular affairs - which

can be withdrawn from God's dominion" (Lumen Gentium, 36). It means working to enrich American society and culture with the beauty and truth of the Gospel, and never

losing sight of that great hope which gives meaning and value to all the other hopes which inspire our lives.

And this, dear friends, is the particular challenge which the Successor of Saint Peter sets before you today. As "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy

nation", follow faithfully in the footsteps of those who have gone before you! Hasten the coming of God's Kingdom in this land! Past generations have left you an impressive

legacy. In our day too, the Catholic community in this nation has been outstanding in its prophetic witness in the defense of life, in the education of the young, in care for the

poor, the sick and the stranger in your midst. On these solid foundations, the future of the Church in America must even now begin to rise!

Words to Live By

The rediscovery of the Lord's Day is a grace which we must implore, not only so that we may live the demands of faith to the full, but also so that we may respond

concretely to the deepest human yearnings. Time given to Christ is never time lost, but is rather time gained, so that our relationships and indeed our whole life may become

more profoundly human. - Pope John Paul II

Holy Cross Ushers Meeting

May 4th
10:30 a.m. at the Holy Cross cafeteria

This weekend we begin our 2008 campaign for the Catholic Services Appeal. Each site within our parish has a target goal. Holy Cross' target is $52,800, St. Catherine's

target is $38,600 and St. Mark's target is $12,800. The CSA supplies the funds required to support the work of Christ throughout the Archdiocese including Catholic Social

Services, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Catholic education, the Marriage Tribunal, The Michigan Catholic and Catholic Television among many others. Any funds collected

in excess of our target will be returned to our parish. If each parish family gave just $100, for example, we would easily make our goals and receive a substantial amount for

our parish.
Again this year, we are asking that you consider a pledge rather than a cash gift. Even a small pledge of $10 or $15 per month can become a generous gift over

the nine-month pledge period. Remember, your contribution is for the ENTIRE YEAR, so please be as generous as possible.
The CSA envelopes are in the back of Church for this weekend and the next. We are asking that you please stop after Mass and pick up your CSA Envelope.

Envelopes not picked up by the 4th of May will be mailed out the week of the 5th. You may return your contribution by mail in the envelope provided, by dropping the

envelope in the collection basket, or returning it to the Parish Office. May God bless you for your generosity!

Stewardship News...

In the Gospel today, Jesus says to us: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments...Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and reveal myself

to him. By your gift to the SVdP, you will reveal the love of the Father to your suffering brothers and sisters.

A Family Perspective
by Bud Ozar

Because family relationships are imprinted in our hearts, today's Gospel reminds us that our loved ones “always remain with you.” Even death and distance cannot

erase this presence. We only need to pause and remember and our loved ones are present to us again. It is a different presence, but a real presence.
National Marriage Encounter

National Marriage Encounter is a weekend experience of rediscovery for couples who want to make their good marriages even better. For more information, call

Rich and Fran at 586-838-4447; Tim and Ann at 248-634-8924; or go to www.national-marriage-encounter.org.
A Ride Needed
Please help some of our parishioners who are needing rides to Holy Cross Services. If you are able to assist in ANY way, please call Holy Cross office for a

number to those needing assistance. We currently have 4 ladies inquiring help to any Mass on the weekends. Another parishioner is a grandmother with two grandchildren,

hoping to receive a ride to the 9:30 a.m. Mass. For phone numbers and information of our fellow parishioners, please call the Parish office @810-765-3568.

Thank You and God Bless You!
Attention
Looking for an opportunity to assist couples on their big day? We are once again seeking some special people who would love to share and use their personal touch

assisting newly weds in the sacrament of marriage. If you are able to give attention to an evening or afternoon in working with Father in coordinating a wedding, please

contact our senior coordinator or office. We love to pair up on coordinators for a Wedding, so look for a partner and join in the celebration! We are meeting soon to discuss

details! For more information, please call:

St. Mark Women's Guild
2nd Annual Flower/Vegetable Sale

May 10 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.)
May 11 (after 10 a.m. Mass)

Members of the Women's Guild at St. Mark are sponsoring their Annual Flower and Vegetable Sale on Church property on Mother's Day weekend. Please plan on

purchasing your perennials and vegetable plants for your summer gardens and, of course, a flat of flowers for your mother. We are also looking for a few volunteers to plant

flowers, later in the month, around the Blessed Mother statue at the waterfront.
Kids in Church

After the Christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong.

Finally the boy replied, “That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys.”
