A Note From The Principal
Alleluia! He Is Risen! It is wonderful to see the world around us changing: the grass is finally green, the trees are starting to bud, and beautiful flowers are coloring
our world. I pray that you will find your life in bloom as we continue on our Easter journeys.
With the Easter season, we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation. This weekend, the second graders of our school and parish will receive the Body of Christ for
the first time during their First Communion. On Tuesday, the eighth graders of our parish will celebrate their full initiation into the Catholic Church through the Sacrament of
Confirmation. I would like to thank Mrs. Smith, our Director of Religious Education, and all of the teachers and adults who have come together to nurture our children in faith.
This weekend, we are also welcoming families who are interested in joining our preschool and kindergarten to our annual open house. Ms. Carolyn, our preschool
teacher, and Ms. Ward, our kindergarten teacher will be here to answer your questions and meet your children. Registration information will also be available. We hope to
see you here!
The Little White Book discusses that the butterfly has often been utilized as a symbol of the Resurrection of Jesus. Our children are also like butterflies. They
come to us here at Holy Cross as little caterpillars. We feed them with the fruits of our faith and the leaves of academics. We work with our parents as their partners in
education to help them grow. As they grow, these young caterpillars begin to change. They use their new understanding and knowledge as a part of their own cocoons—not
closed off from the world, but continuing to grow. Eventually, these same young caterpillars grow up and use the wings that they have built to soar as butterflies. They are all
unique, colored by their interests and experience. We are truly blessed to see them fly off on their way, sharing their beauty with others.
Registration packages are now available in the school office for families wanting to become Holy Cross Crusaders. Please stop in or call the school office if you are
interested in receiving a package. We would also be happy to provide you with a tour. We would also like to welcome your child to spend part of a day visiting Holy Cross.
Please call the school office to schedule an appointment. Would you like to learn more about Holy Cross from our parents? We would be happy to introduce you to a mentor
family who can also answer your questions about Holy Cross.
Have you heard about our SCRIP program? Have you started using it to plan for your future Crusader’s education? Please stop in to learn more about this program.
Your children will thank you!
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
The Lord’s love reaches to heaven;
Let us give thanks and praise, alleluia!
On this 3rd Sunday of Easter, we continue to hear about Jesus’ resurrection appearances. Just after the report of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we hear
Jesus again greeting them with the words: “Peace be with you.” Peace is what they need right now, and wouldn’t you say, so do we? Jesus often connects a peace greeting
with another gift – forgiveness.
For us, in our own time, our celebration of the Mass is an encounter with Jesus’ peace, through the Word of Scripture and the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist,
which a number of our young people have the privilege of receiving for the first time this weekend.
Jesus commissions His disciples to be witnesses of His life, love and mercy. We too are sent to announce those same gifts to one another, beginning from where
we are. We are created in God’s image, to bring God joy, to experience joy in life, and to bring joy to each other. The world is waiting, our families are waiting, the needy
are waiting.
“You are witnesses of these things”, Jesus says today. Witnesses of faith, resurrection, love, forgiveness, peace. God will never be without witnesses. We all
continue to walk with God every day, centering our spirituality in the Eucharist, finding a way explicitly to tie our identity to our faith in the risen Lord so that we know who we
are and what we stand for – and so does everybody else. We are witnesses – entrusted with the privilege and duty to bring His love and care to our world today. Wow!
What a gift!
May you know the peace Jesus gives.

Parish Lenten Prayer For Vocations Comments
Continued
My family and I were happy to bring the Parish Crucifix home for the week. It raised the importance of praying for vocations. My children have told me that praying
in front of the crucifix every day has made them open to the idea of listening for God’s gentle nudges when it comes to discerning their purposes in life. When I shared the
experience with my 2nd Grade Catechism class, they were reminded that their job right now is to figure out what God intends their special jobs to be in the Church; whether
that be living a married life, single life or religious life. Whatever their paths, they need to be done in the service of Our Lord.
Many thanks for the opportunity.
The Nutter Family – Derek, Catherine,
Jacob and Abigail
We emailed the prayers to our three children and asked them to join us each day this week. Thank You, Lord, for the opportunity to join with our parish family in
praying for all vocations. Shower Your choicest blessings on those who already have committed themselves to You, those who are contemplating their commitment, but
especially for our young people who need Your strength and guidance to know and learn about You each day. Help us all to be an example to them always. We ask this in
Your Name forever and ever. Amen
Jim and Connie Seeley
Praying for vocations made me realize how fortunate we are here at our parish having two priests, Fr. Jim & Fr. Matt, two deacons, Bob & Gary, for our expanded
churches. With the number of retired priests to fall back on in our area, we are truly blest. Then I think of the young men at the Seminary who need our prayers every day of
the year. I will sure add them to my prayer list and pray for them year round.
Elmer D’Ambrosio
This was a good family exercise as it stressed to the kids the importance of praying for all who are called to serve God. We talked about the sacrifices these men
and women make, and we stressed the importance of keeping an open mind to whatever vocation God calls us to.
Gary Barr and Family
I felt like I was in church. I felt like I was at church but a home and that made me feel good.

A Word From Our
RCIA SPONSORS
My name is Rosemary Brendle. I am my granddaughter’s sponsor, Angela Mackey. My prayers were answered the day she told me she wanted to be a Catholic
all the way. It has been very inspirational being part of this RCIA group. Going to the Cathedral and seeing all the people becoming Catholic, I didn’t realize this as it was my
first experience.
I remember my Confirmation and First Communion vividly as I’m positive they will too. I had kind of stayed away from the Church. I can’t describe how happy I was
to come back. My life was complete again. I felt such joy in my heart. I thank God every day for being born to my parents in a Catholic family home. God is good. I pray
daily for Sister Mary Ann and Sister Geraldine, also for our priests, past and present. Jesus be with us.
There are many reasons to get involved in this process. Do any of these fit you?
You would like to become a Catholic and have never been baptized
You would like to join the Catholic Church and were baptized in another Christian faith tradition
You were baptized in the Catholic Church but never celebrated the sacraments of First Eucharist and Confirmation
If you are interested in discovering what the Catholic faith is like and possibly becoming Catholic, or if you are Catholic and would like to be confirmed and receive
First Eucharist, we invite you to consider the following:
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for and about people on a journey of faith.
RCIA sessions will meet on Sunday mornings, beginning in September.

Turn to God in the name of Jesus Christ so that you will be forgiven. When you hurt someone, say to God and to the person, "I made a mistake. I am very sorry.
Will you forgive me?" After God forgives you, he will show you good things to do in his Son's name. Choosing ways to honor and serve God will lead you to heaven.
Prayer
Father God, forgive me and show me ways to serve you in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ.
Something to Draw
Draw your friend breaking your favorite toy. Draw yourself forgiving him.
Mission for the Week
When someone hurts me I will forgive. I will ask God to forgive me if I hurt someone.

Health benefits from vitamin D are becoming evident. Vitamin D develops in the skin when it is exposed to sunshine. Vitamin D produces chemicals in the body
that increase immunity which destroys viruses, bacteria and other germs. Research has shown that a deficiency in vitamin D has been linked with depression, cancer,
insulin resistance (diabetics), and macular degeneration. A Harvard study of more than 30,000 women, reported in 2007, found that older women with the highest vitamin D
intake had 35% less breast cancer than those getting the least amount. Sources of vitamin D can be found in cod liver oil, salmon. Tuna fish canned in oil, milk, cereals,
Swiss cheese and of course sun light. You may also choose to take a vitamin supplement. Check with your physician before starting any vitamin regimen.

FR. MATT’S MATTERS
The celebration and reception of First Holy Eucharist at Our Lady on the River Parish, & the Holy Cross School Open House - We share Easter joy with our
children who received first Communion this weekend, on April 25th. Holy Week is the highpoint of the Liturgical Year and leads us to have first Eucharist during the Easter
Season. Why? Participation in the Mass and taking in the real Presence of Christ in Communion is the source of and the highpoint of our Christian lives. All the Sacraments
are not equal, the Eucharist is pre-eminent. Baptism and Confirmation set us up so we can be full, conscious and active participators in the sacrament which is the
Presence of Christ par excellence. We pray for our first Communicants and their families that they will be beneficially, spiritually fed at the Altar/Table of the Lord at least
every week of their lives. Also in our prayers is this weekend’s Open House at the Holy Cross Grade School, we pray that as Catholics we will work with God’s Holy Spirit to
continue the good work God has done and is doing at our School.
Did you know, would you like to know?
Yes, I must admit there is economic security in the ‘position’ I have as a priest in the Catholic Church. When a company boasts they’ve been ‘at it’ for whatever
admirable number of years, internally it hits me that my ‘company’ has been around for nearly 2000 years and will not go ‘out of business’ anytime soon! The Church’s
mission given by the Risen Christ included the ‘universality factor’ of reaching out to all nations. Over these 2000 years our worldwide Church has learned much about the
various forms of governmental structures, and the application of God-given moral principles to economic and governmental activity. In today’s economic conditions there’s the
blame game and ideological and partisan verbal warfare, often in the simplistic sound bites of ‘socialist’ versus ‘capitalist’, etc. Many of us are very familiar with the Catholic
Church’s moral teachings in the ‘realm’ of human sexuality and reproduction. Some of us have or give the impression that there’s only one significant moral category. Yet,
we have developed a whole area of principles under the heading of ‘Social Doctrine’, and they include (for example) the principle that not only is procured abortion personally
morally wrong, but also that there should be measures taken by governments to limit/make illegal the procedure.
Much of the Church’s Social Doctrine is summated or stated verbatim in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, from the Vatican, A.D. 1994. I find interesting what
I will quote here from Section II, the Ten Commandments, the Seventh Commandment: ‘you shall not steal’.
No. 2421, “The social doctrine of the Church developed more clear articulation in the 1800’s when the Gospel encountered modern industrial society with its new
structures… The development of the doctrine of the Church on economic and social matters attests the permanent value of the Church’s teaching at the same time as it
attests the true meaning of her (the Church’s) Tradition, always living and active.”
No. 1906, “The ‘common good’ is to be understood as the sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfillment more
fully and more easily. The common good concerns the life of all. It consists of three essential elements: it presupposes respect for each human person; it requires the social
well-being and development of the group itself; it requires using morally acceptable means to ensure an internal just order, security, stability and therefore some real peace.”
No. 2402, “In the beginning God entrusted the earth and its resources to the common stewardship of mankind to take care of them, master them by their labor, and enjoy
their fruits. The goods of creation are destined for the whole human race. However, the earth is divided up among men to assure the security of their lives, endangered by
poverty and threatened by violence. The appropriation of property is legitimate for guaranteeing the freedom and dignity of persons and for helping each of them to meet”
(their) “basic needs.”
No. 2403, “The right to private property, acquired by work or received from others by inheritance or gift, does not do away with the original gift of the earth to the whole of
mankind. The universal destination of goods remains primordial, even if the promotion of the common good requires respect for the right to private property and its exercise.”
No. 2405, “Goods of production - material or immaterial - such as land, factories, practical or artistic skills, oblige their possessors to employ them in ways that will benefit
the greatest number. Those who hold goods for use and consumption should use them with moderation, reserving the better part for guests, for the sick and the poor.”
No. 2406, “Political authority has the right and duty to regulate the legitimate exercise of the right to ownership for the sake of the common good.”
No. 2420, “The Church makes moral judgments about economic and social matters when the fundamental rights of the person or the salvation of souls requires it. In the
moral order the Church bears a mission distinct from that of political authorities: the Church is concerned with the temporal aspects of the common good because they are
ordered to the Sovereign Good, our ultimate final destiny.”
Look for more ‘controversial’ Catholic teaching later!
