FR. MATT’S MATTERS
THE FIRST AND THE MANY
Fr. Jim Lopez, our pastor, and I congratulate with joy in Christ our First Communicants and their families. May God’s blessings be abundantly bestowed upon
them and our parish through that very Sacrament. We thank everyone who helped ready the candidates and all who helped in whatever manner in the celebrations.
This article is my second attempt, because I lost on computer the nearly finished first version. So now I rush to mentally restate what I spent much time on
yesterday before today’s deadline.
It’s difficult to remember what “Communion” is all about if you’re left to only your experience and knowledge at seven years old. I vaguely remember my first
Communion day. I know my parents took me to the many hundreds of following Communions at regular weekend Liturgies. I also was in Catholic schools where we were at
Mass usually once during the week. I remember using Necco wafer candies at home with my siblings and doing pretend Masses (of course, I was the oldest and a male,
thus usurping the role of pretend priest, perhaps a prelude…?). My family’s faith and our efforts to put it into practice was a key bonding agent, without which we’d have been
left to our own devices which could have lead to ‘destruct mode’.
There is only this one Sacrament we officially refer to as a “first” (Communion or Eucharist). I hope and pray many of us Catholics will appreciate what a great
opportunity the Eucharist is as spiritual food, and we begin to overflow our churches every week with so many of us being there. Note the many names we have for this
singular precious gift of Jesus Christ: the Mass; the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass; the Sacred Liturgy; the Eucharist; the Eucharistic Banquet; the Blessed Sacrament; Holy
Communion (that which is taken and eaten); the Source and Summit (of our Christian lives). And of course, this Sacrament is a Holy Mystery we cannot fully comprehend.
This Sacrament holds first place in the life of the Church. The other sacraments lead to it and flow from it. How well do we appreciate these essentials?
The bread and wine change their essence (substance) and become the Real Presence par excellence of Jesus Himself. This reality is true whether some of us
choose to fully believe or not. How about a Fr. Matt’s top ten list for attending and fully, consciously and actively participating at Mass every week? In somewhat lower to
higher order: 1). We’ve nothing better to do. 2). There’re no sports or lessons this day. 3). The TV is broke. 4). Dad and/or Mom always said I should! 5). If I don’t I’ll spent
eternity in some condition way too warm. 6). The Pope and Fr. Jim said I had to. 7). If I’m not there fellow Catholics will miss me and get sad. 8). It’s how we keep holy the
Lord’s Day and not a church conspiracy for making money, 9). Jesus actually meant what He said at the Last Supper, “do this in memory of me”. 10). Jesus our Lord invites
and wants me with His community to listen to His Word and receive His life as ‘soul food’, Amen. If only…
Christ’s peace, love and justice to you all, Fr. Matt Ellis

A Note From The Principal
ALLELUIA! It is so refreshing to see the changes taking place on our campus. We are seeing more birds, green grass, and flowers preparing to blossom. We are
blessed to be able to nurture the academic and spiritual growth of our students at Holy Cross Catholic School.
This weekend we welcome the second graders of Our Lady on the River Parish to the Lord’s Table as they celebrate their First Holy Communion. As a Eucharistic
minister, it is truly fulfilling to share in the spiritual growth of our children. This is one reason that I enjoy being a part of the quality Catholic education that we offer at Holy
Cross Catholic School.
Registration is underway for our preschool and K-8 programs. With the new light that spring brings into our world, I encourage you to explore the new light that Holy
Cross Catholic School can bring into your family. We are proud to be able to educate the WHOLE child! We do this by continuing the faith formation that you have instilled
in your sons and daughters through their Baptism. If you would like more information regarding any of our programs, please email me at principal@holycrossonline.net or
call me at 810-765-3591 to arrange a personal visit. I look forward to becoming your partner in education.
Last week our fourth graders traveled to Lansing to visit our state capitol. Our second and third graders traveled to the Detroit Science Center to learn more about the
world around us. At Holy Cross, we do everything we can to make learning a reality.
Do you have holiday and special event pictures that are still sitting in their envelopes? Perhaps you have a memory card full of pictures from Christmas to Easter?
Maybe you still fondly look through your computer photo files at last summer’s vacation shots? Next Saturday, April 26th, the Holy Cross Class of 2008 will be hosting a
12-hour scrapbook crop from 9:00a.m.-9:00p.m. This is a wonderful way to get away from the distractions of home and prepare your memories to share with others. Please
contact Jennifer Laster at 810-765-3510 for more information. Thank you for your support of our eighth graders as they continue to build their memories of Holy Cross
Catholic School.
This week our preschool received a certificate of recognition from the St. Clair County Health Department for “100% Immunization Compliance.” Thank you to all of our
families for helping us reach this goal.
Have you been thinking about coming to Holy Cross, but you aren’t sure if a Catholic education is right for you? Are you worried about the cost of a Holy Cross
education? There are many ways in which you can reduce your tuition cost. Utilizing SCRIP is a no-hassle way to reduce your tuition while maintaining your current
shopping habits. Everyone needs to buy gas and groceries – put the rising costs to work in your favor by using SCRIP!
In His Service,

A Prayer On First Communion Day
“Lord Jesus, bless all those who are receiving You in Holy Communion this day for the first time. May each of them know Your love and mercy in a personal way.
May all Your people open their hearts to You and be transformed by this great Sacrament. May we become a visible sign of Your love in our world. May each of us continue
to guide these young children by good example and bring them to the Table of Jesus faithfully., Amen.”
American Red Cross Blood Drive
The American Red Cross will be conducting a blood drive at Holy Cross Church today, Sunday, April 20th from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. If you are able, please
stop by. Just one donation could help save up to three lives. The need for blood is ongoing and is always greater than the available supply. Your donation does make a
difference.
Cheerleaders and Prophets
Our worship together, sharing in the Eucharist, is the deepest source of energy for our parish community. Energized by the love of God, we can grow in the
process of unity and creatively support one another in sharing our resources. A few years ago, a priest who shared ministry with me, wrote a column called “Point of View”.
His message seems appropriate as we strive to become a true community of faith, love and service. He writes: “Have you ever noticed, as I have, that people whom you do
not find very attractive or likeable nevertheless seem to have friends that like them very much? How could anyone like Sam or Hilary, we think, not finding anything likeable
about them ourselves? Yet, often to our surprise, people do like them. Somehow, their friends see something likeable in them that we are missing. Of course it is also true
that certain people may look at us and not find themselves drawn to us in any way. They may be thinking the same negative thoughts about us that we experienced about
others. Yet, thanks be to God, we too seem to have at least a few friends who - even to our surprise - really care about us. Friends like these, who cheer us on, are very
important in our lives.
As Robert Wicks remarks in his book, “Touching the Holy,” we all need a few ‘cheerleaders’, people who feel good about us and do not hesitate to say so in a
positive way. There will always be enough of those people in our lives who are more than ready to confront us with our faults, whom he calls ’prophets.’ We probably need
those folks to help keep us in balance. But it is our cheerleaders’ who help us to believe in ourselves and perhaps discover in ourselves something worth cheering about. Am
I, are you, a ‘cheerleader’ or a ‘prophet’ when it comes to other people? In the long run, it is the ‘cheerleaders’ who bring out the best in others. So if you have to choose
between being a ‘cheerleader’ or a ‘prophet’ who expresses negatively someone’s faults, my suggestion is, be a cheerleader. Surprisingly, the majority of people we meet
have difficulty in feeling good about themselves. They are not sure they really count for anything really worthwhile in life. Their ‘prophets’ only reinforce their negative feelings.
What they need is a few ‘cheerleaders’ to convince them otherwise. Maybe that’s a job we could sign up for.

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus is getting a place ready for you in heaven. One day you can spend time with Jesus there. You will never get sick. You will never be sad. You will never be
left out. You will be loved because you are God's special child, and he wants to spend time with you every day.
Prayer
Thank you for promising to make a special place for me in heaven, Jesus.
Mission for the Week
Jesus is getting ready for you. Make sure you are getting ready for Jesus. Ask God to help you grow closer to him every day.

Volunteers Needed To Teach The Children
Please consider teaching the children during Sunday mass. I love the fifteen minutes the little ones and I spend together exploring the day’s reading and gospel.
Without more volunteers, however, this program cannot continue at Holy Cross and St. Catherine churches.
It is an honor to discuss with them the ways in which God loves them and the ways children can show God’s love. It is also fun. When the children come forward
and form a line in front of our congregations, we join in a blessing upon them. When they open their hearts and their eager little minds to me and my fellow volunteer
teachers, the children are a blessing to us.
This is an outstanding opportunity. It is not difficult to prepare and teach the lesson. We receive a standard church manual with each session scripted. There is
room for creativity. A teaching background is not required, nor is a college degree. Given a larger team of teachers, the time commitment can be minimal. Each of us can
then teach once every month or two. To volunteer, submit your name, address, phone number and e-mail address to the parish office as soon as possible. If you have
questions, concerns or suggestions e-mail me at llrochon@netscape.net.
Archdiocese of Detroit April Prayer Theme
"Celebrating Our Tradition of Faith Formation"
During this month of April, as we continue to reflect on our 175-year history, it is good for us to acknowledge with gratitude our long tradition of faith formation, both
through Catholic schools and programs of faith formation and catechesis for youth and adults.
As we remember the way that each of us first heard the Good News, we pray that the parents, catechists, and teachers of today will themselves be renewed in
faith as they share the Good News with the next generation.
Heavenly Father, you sent your only Son, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, as the divine teacher. Help us to continue to listen to your Word in the Scriptures, to
study the teachings of the Church, and to put our faith into action.
We praise and thank you for inspiring and sustaining the teaching and evangelizing mission of the Church and pray that we will be both recipients and givers in the
dynamic process of allowing the Word to become flesh.
We ask all this Heavenly Father through Jesus, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Kids In Church
3 - year - old Reese:
“Our Father, Who art in heaven, Harold is his name. Amen.”
A little boy was overheard praying:
“Lord, if you can’t make me a better boy, don’t worry about it. I’m having a real good time like I am.”
One particular four - year - old prayed,
“And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.”
A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, “And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?” One bright little girl replied,
”Because people are sleeping.”
God Bless Our Children!
A Family Perspective
by Bud Ozar
We ask children to trust us because “we know the way.” What we ask of our children, Jesus asks of us in today’s Gospel, “I am the way” so “don’t be
troubled.” It is a matter of trust.
“Who has faith in Me will do the works I do, and far greater than these.” Are you being called to do the work of the Lord as a priest, deacon, sister, or brother? If you are
considering this possibility, call Father Tim Birney at the Vocation Office at 313–237–5875 or visit www.vocationsdetroit.org.
FLOWER: Families Live Out the Word in Everyday Routines
“Do not let your hearts be troubled…in my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.”
What a wonderful motto for the family crest. You are welcome, you are loved, no matter what is going on; no matter what is troubling you or worrying you; no
matter what you need to celebrate, wrestle with, or let go of, you can do it here. There is plenty of room, plenty of space. We have eyes to see, ears to listen and hearts that
care. Together, let us discover your place.
