Our Lady on the River Parish would like to welcome our regional bishop, his Excellency, Bishop Earl Boyea! For Bishop Boyea this will be one of his last duties as our
regional bishop to confirm our confirmation class of 2008. We are honored to have him here and we send him off to Lansing with all of our love and our prayers as he begins
a new chapter in his life as the Chief Shepherd of the Lansing Diocese. God Bless You Bishop Boyea and thank you for your service in answering Christ’s calling to
shepherd after his flocks.
The reason Bishop Boyea is here today is because he is confirming our young ladies and gentlemen with the Sacrament of Confirmation. Our young people of this
parish have said “Yes” to their preparations and have done their very best to get ready for this day. They have studied to gain knowledge of our faith; they have attended a
retreat that focuses on the understanding of what the sacrament is about in their lives; they have celebrated the sacrament of reconciliation to help them discern right
judgment and how their actions have an impact on the Church as a whole; they endured an interview process on how much they know regarding their faith and that takes
courage to stand before a priest or teacher and answer questions without any warning; they are taking this experience and will pass it on to others and lending their wisdom
to one who will be in preparation for next year; they have demonstrated to me and have left me in wonder and awe on what they know and how they know it; my hope for
them is that they take what they know of their faith and of themselves and treat it with reverence.
The words that I have highlighted in the previous paragraph are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is a gift that all the confirmed have received. However, as we get
older, sometimes those gifts are misplaced or ignored or even forgotten. My prayer for this confirmation class is that they do not fall to the temptations as others in our faith
have fallen to in forgetting their promises at Confirmation. As the Head Shepherd of this community, I ask for your prayers not only for this Confirmation Class of 2008 but I
ask that we pray for those individuals who left the practice of their faith and ask through our intercessions for their return back to Mother Church. We are all called to be
shepherds and we cannot forget to retrieve the lost and forsaken.
Next week, we will be celebrating first Holy Communion and I ask that we pray for those young girls and young boys who will be receiving Christ for the first time.
May they become what they receive: holy children with loving and sacrificing hearts just like their Savior!
All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim

A Note From The Principal
ALLELUIA! Spring is truly here! It is wonderful to see the sun so early each morning. Our flowers, after a winter of dormancy, are starting to sprout and share their
colors with us. Watching the new growth each spring is truly awesome. Even more inspiring is the growth that I see each day when I visit any of our classrooms at Holy
Cross Catholic School.
This weekend we welcome the eighth graders of Our Lady on the River Parish into full communion with the church as they celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. It
has been a blessing to witness the development of their faith in action over the course of the school year. Next weekend, we will join in celebration with our second graders
as they celebrate their First Holy Communion. It is wonderful to see the church so full of families supporting their children as they grow in their faith. This is one reason that
I enjoy being a part of quality Catholic education.
Today we are having an open house for our preschool and kindergarten programs from 9:00 a.m. until noon. If you are not able to attend this event, I invite you to call the
school office at 810-765-3591 for more information regarding our preschool and kindergarten programs. We are able to offer preschool programs that meet the needs of our
children by holding two-day, three-day, and five-day programs. Morning and afternoon care is also available. Our kindergarten is a five-day, FULL day program. The
students receive a quality education in a nurturing environment that educates the WHOLE child.
Our boys’ baseball season is underway. Our home field is located in New Haven. Games are held on the weekend. With the sun shining, attending a baseball game is
a great way to enjoy the outdoors while supporting our boys. Track practice has also started. Track meets are held the first three weekends in May at the track behind
Marine City High School. These are fun-filled days with all of our league teams competing. It is great to provide our students with this opportunity to learn both skills and
sportsmanship.
Holy Cross Catholic School is proud to announce that we have officially joined the National Junior Honor Society. Our chapter is the Our Lady on the River chapter. This
name was chosen because we are the parish school, not just a school for the children whose parents regularly attend Mass at Holy Cross Church. We have children who
attend Mass at St. Mark’s and St. Catherine’s. I will continue to work to make Holy Cross Catholic School a parish school in the hearts of all of our parishioners.
Registration for the 2008-2009 school year has begun. Have you been thinking about coming to Holy Cross, but you aren’t sure if a Catholic education is right for you?
Please give me a call. I would be happy to connect you with a mentor family who can give you the parents’ perspective of a Holy Cross education.
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
“We, your people, Lord, will give you thanks for ever and ever!”
Today is World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Good Shepherd Sunday, and our parish Confirmation Day! Congratulations and God’s blessings to all our parish
Confirmandi as Bishop Boyea anoints them today and bestows upon them the “Gift of the Holy Spirit” for service. Blessings to Bishop Boyea, Fr. Lopez, Fr. Ellis, Fr. Sig
and all our retired priests on this Good Shepherd Sunday, who serve as “good shepherds”, following Jesus, in leading those in their care to faith and life.
Pope Benedict, on this 45th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, has chosen the theme ‘Vocations to the service of the Church-mission.’ He reminds us that among
the persons who dedicate themselves totally to the service of the Gospel, there are, in a special way, priests, called to preach the Word of God, administer the Sacraments,
especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation, and who are committed to help all of God’s people. He adds that “there have always been in the Church many men and women,
who, inspired by the Holy Spirit respond to the call to live the Gospel in a radical way, professing vows of celibate chastity, poverty and obedience and share in mutual
ministry with others, both married and in a generous single life in service to the Gospel.
Today, I would like to offer a brief glimpse into consecrated life. Sometimes skepticism and cynicism influence one’s thinking about the role of religious women in
the Church. If one’s only knowledge of sisters is based on what appears in the comic routines seen and heard in “Sister Act”, “Nunsense” and “Late Nite Catechism”, then
it’s very amusing, but bears no resemblance to the remarkable reality of religious life today. Many gifted religious who are capable, generous, and faithful, have and do serve
the Church in mutual ministry with bishops, priests and committed lay persons. I personally spent many wonderful years in the classroom with God’s children and young
adults from 1st Grade through College, and I enjoyed each of them very much. In the early 70’s, with many school closings, my attention turned to Faith Formation for all
ages. Along the way, I became a Parish Administrator, exercising pastoral care, coordinating the administrative, financial and spiritual aspects of two parishes in the
absence of a priest. All of these were good experiences, and I thank God daily for each of them.
My ministry here at Our Lady on the River Parish, through the invitation of Fr. Jim and Fr. Tim, includes many of my past experiences and adapting to new vision
and needs. Part of who I am as a Sister of St. Joseph among you flows from the purpose for which our Congregation exists, which is “that we live and work that all may be
united with God and with one another.” It is rooted in the mission of Jesus, and in harmony with today’s theme of “service to the Church-mission.” The rapidity of change in
our culture has also brought about dramatic changes in all elements of the Church, very visibly in the religious life. We must be who we are by our charisma, striving to be
authentically honest and faithful to God’s call.
The future is very challenging and calls for generosity and courage on the part of each of us, including young persons discerning God’s call. Today, we are called to
a “world prayer day” to enable our parish seminarians and all of us to continuously follow faithfully the Good Shepherd Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
Blessings, love and peace,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

Sharing the Gospel
You are one of God's sheep. Jesus calls you by name. You recognize his voice. Close your eyes. Listen to the voices of your family and friends. You can tell who
is talking by the sound of their voices. You choose to follow Jesus on his path. You love God above everything. You love your neighbor as yourself. You share your toys,
money and food with your family and the poor.
Prayer
Jesus, help me hear the right voices, and not follow the wrong voices.
Mission for the Week
I will listen and follow directions of my parents and teachers right away.

Fr. Matt’s Matters
A ‘Pastoral’ Note: Jesus THE Good Shepherd, (and the rest of us). It is a good week to remember, as we may have matured in age and grace, that Christ
is our focused hope. Humans will often let us down, even more so as we place grand expectations on them.
Ordained priests of the Church represent Jesus in special ways to the community. This is in some ways automatic and in other ways laden with personal
effort. Regarding myself it looks now that I will probably be here the rest of 2008 and into 2009 and ? My gratitude goes to the many of you for your welcoming kindness. As
you may know, priests are, for better or worse, assigned by the bishop, not elected or hired by parishioners or a board thereof. It looks like Fr. Jim will be here for a while
also! To even have two of us is a benefit, likely short term. Active parish priest numbers are dropping, dropping! Fr. Jim and I were not part of the decisions which created
the merger, we’ve inherited it. There is absolutely zero evidence that the merger will be ‘undone’. And so it is great to see here so many cooperative people.
A newly assigned priest/pastor faces folks who are open and ready, and some who might be mourning the loss of, and still attached to former
pastors/priests. While a new priest should not turn things upside down in one month, a former pastor should for his part stay out of what is no longer his business,
particularly if he left of his own choice, as most do. He certainly shouldn’t be involved in any thing to undermine things (and I’m definitely not saying any one is). If things get
bad enough the current pastor may challenge a former pastor on something, or in good cases, ask for his advice. I am built up in Christ in seeing how much Fr. Jim Lopez
cares, works hard and has the good of as many as possible in mind. Each of us priests have our own unique strengths and weaknesses, don’t we all? One thing for my part,
as a positive example, I personally invest myself in every funeral event I lead, using my experience, etc. to help the time be as prayerful and healing as possible.
We priests are to walk a tight line, as Jesus did and the Church entrusts us to do, of comforting people significantly afflicted, and afflicting (challenging
with God’s love) those who are all too comfortable in what may be unchristian, selfish and spiritually destructive habits. We all have to let God keep working personally on
us! Priests are supposed to preach and lead in all the ways of the Gospel in the Catholic Tradition, this may not lead to popularity with some people. In priestly life and
ministry I’m always learning, and yet I’ve been around awhile (could write quite a book!) and there is usually an experienced method to my ‘madness’. Looking first to Christ
the Good Shepherd for His lead, I am prayerfully yours,
Fr. Matt Ellis

Operation Rice Bowl
Thank you for your participation in Operation Rice Bowl -- It's not too late to make your contribution!
Your participation in Operation Rice Bowl makes a concrete difference in the lives of those living in poverty. Millions of Catholics in all 50 states have reached out to assist
our brothers and sisters around the world through traditional Lenten practices, by offering our prayers, by fasting, by learning, and by giving. 25% of our contributions remain
in our diocese to fund local hunger and poverty alleviation efforts.
Since 1975, Operation Rice Bowl has raised more than $160 million to fund development projects that improve peoples’ ability to access food around the world and in local
diocesan communities in the United States, serving as a tangible way for Catholics in the United States to connect in solidarity with our brothers and sisters here and
overseas. For more information, please visit their website, http://orb.crs.org/
Please bring your Rice Bowl to the back of the church or the church/parish office as soon as possible so that we can make our contribution.
FLOWER: Families Live Out the Word in Everyday Routines
“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber.”
This could be among the fundamental principles for sustaining family relationships. Hurt, anger, and misunderstanding are inevitable within families. The
only way to correct or overcome them is through them. We cannot avoid them, or pretend they didn’t happen; we can not excuse them as irrelevant or unimportant. We must
address them and work through them. We must ask forgiveness and forgive.
Then, and only then, can reconciliation take place. Then, and only then, can we find pasture and the abundant gifts that family life can provide.
A Family Perspective
by Bud Ozar
The shepherd in today’s Gospel called each sheep by name. Naming is a serious family function because our name is our lifelong identity, connecting us to a
family history and how we will be remembered forever.
On this Good Shepherd Sunday, we celebrate the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and conse–
crated life, especially for our diocese, that God will raise up good shepherds in our midst. If you think God is calling you to serve the Church as a priest or in the consecrated
life, call Father Tim Birney at the Vocation Office
at 313–237–5875, or visit us on-line at www.vocationsdetroit.org.

Department of Parish Life and Services
The economic and human crisis in Michigan is impacting an increasing number of families in Archdiocese of Detroit parishes. This week, your gifts to the Catholic Services
Appeal will help fund the Michigan in Crisis Summit, which will offer parishes practical strategies for response.
The summit, at Sacred Heart Seminary on April 15, is sponsored by the archdiocesan Offices for Catholic Social Action, Catholic Social Teaching, Health and Life Services,
and Pastoral Resources. It will include a reporting on findings from the Michigan in Crisis survey and provide data on the situation at parish and vicariate levels; resources
and experts in social services, job and employment counseling, psychologists and family counselors; and the investigation of possible avenues to be explored at the state
and federal levels regarding legislation designed to address the current crisis.
For more information about the Michigan in Crisis Summit and other CSA-funded ministries, please go to www.aodonline.org.

Research has shown that eggs are a great source of antioxidants known as carotenoids. These antioxidants benefit the retina's fragile macula, which is responsible for
our central vision. Don't worry about increasing cholesterol, eating one egg a day will not raise triglyceride or cholesterol levels.

"Celebrating Our Tradition of Faith Formation"
During this month of April, as we continue to reflect on our 175-year history, it is good for us to acknowledge with gratitude our long tradition of faith formation, both
through Catholic schools and programs of faith formation and catechesis for youth and adults.
As we remember the way that each of us first heard the Good News, we pray that the parents, catechists, and teachers of today will themselves be renewed in
faith as they share the Good News with the next generation.
Heavenly Father, you sent your only Son, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, as the divine teacher. Help us to continue to listen to your Word in the Scriptures, to
study the teachings of the Church, and to put our faith into action.
We praise and thank you for inspiring and sustaining the teaching and evangelizing mission of the Church and pray that we will be both recipients and givers in the
dynamic process of allowing the Word to become flesh.
We ask all this Heavenly Father through Jesus, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
