FR. MATT’S MATTERS
CHRIST’S RESURRECTION: A NEW CREATION AND SPIRITUAL ILLUMINATION
“Christ’s Resurrection inaugurates a whole new creation, a new way of living, thinking and acting”. These words of Detroit’s Cardinal Maida on Easter Day are

powerfully compact. The resurrection of Jesus is not to be viewed with factual coolness, and is not within the capacity of empirical science. Did Jesus of Nazareth spiritually

and bodily resurrect, glorified, never to suffer death again, or not? Neutrality here is simply evasion. If we respond ‘no’ or ‘I doubt it’, then life and death continue unchanged. If

we say ‘yes I believe’, then this quite warm leap of faith has the power to transform, as we know it, everything in life.
Any expert, scholar or archeologist, etc., who tries to give historical evidence to this ‘Event’, or take it away, winds up right where he/she started: ‘we

don’t really know ‘. It is a matter of spiritual eyesight! How easily it is blocked! The most pertinent and reliable Resurrection stories of Jesus for us are in the New Testament.

And guess what? They occurred almost exclusively with people who knew Jesus before He died! These first disciples primarily gained illuminated understanding of Christ

Jesus upon meeting Him Resurrected/glorified. It is just as we read in this week’s Emmaus story of disciples coming to know the resurrected Jesus ‘in the breaking of the

bread’ and thus, recognizing Jesus as God’s incarnate presence on earth. Really ‘getting it’ regarding Jesus could happen when He completed “doing the works of His

Father’, especially His death and resurrection.
It may seem easy to have come to real faith in Jesus if we’d have been with Him in His earthly days. We forget that Jesus appeared just like other men,

and He was very challenging and very misunderstood. Take ‘doubting’ apostle Thomas, he ‘clicked’ when he saw the glory of the Risen Lord and His glorified wounds (they

assist understanding that first the Messiah had to suffer and die). Thomas responded: “My Lord and my God”. Just those few words were not only a slap in the face of the

authorities that condemned Jesus, they were verbal insurrection to the ‘emperor worship’ of the Romans. The Caesars fancied themselves ‘divine’ and were titled and

greeted, ‘my lord and my god’. To begin referring to a crucified Jewish teacher in those terms was to risk death.
The whole ministry of Jesus was to renew Creation, healing, forgiving, restoring to original blessedness, and illuminating hearts, minds and spirits to apprehend

the Kingdom of the One True God: the way to the Father through the mediating Son by the activity of the Holy Spirit. We can receive the blessedness of not having

physically seen, but nonetheless are faith-full believers, becoming open vessels to the flow of real divine Spirit. The original Resurrection seers and writers are the bedrock

heroes bringing the earthly Jesus to us, presenting the fullness of Him, so that we can reach full stature as grounded spiritual children of God. Resurrection power is in the

‘Jesus way’ of life and love, still ever new to the world, and where it is really present (in us), there is its ‘proof’!

A Note From The Principal
ALLELUIA! Welcome back to all of our school families as we return from our Easter vacation, rested and ready to continue our school year. It is hard to believe that we

are at the beginning of our last marking period of this school year! Report cards will be going home on Wednesday, April 9th.
As I write this article, I notice that the snow is gone and the ice is flowing. I would like to thank our maintenance staff for the wonderful job that they have done in keeping

our sidewalks clear and safe for our students and teachers. Hopefully, they will be able to put their shovels away for the year!
Congratulations to our girls’ volleyball team who wrapped up their season with this weekend’s tournament. We will have more information for next week’s bulletin. Our

boys’ baseball team has already begun practicing, and our track team will be starting soon as well. We pray for warm, dry days in the future.
With the celebration of Easter shining daily in our hearts, we prepare to welcome our young people into greater communion with the church. Next Sunday, April 13th, the

eighth graders in our parish will celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Earl Boyea at the 11:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross. On Saturday, April 19th at 11:00

a.m., the second graders of our parish will make their First Holy Communion. As principal, I am blessed to be able to share each day in the faith formation of our grade

school students. I am also able to share in our weekly Friday liturgies. I hope that you will find time to share in our liturgies as well.
On Sunday, April 13th, from 9:00a.m. until 12:00p.m., Holy Cross Catholic School invites you to come to our Preschool and Kindergarten Open House. Registration for

our preschool and kindergarten programs, as well as our elementary programs, will be available at that time. If you are looking for a positive change in your child’s WHOLE

education, I encourage you to visit Holy Cross and see how we can be your partner in education.
Did you know that you can start planning for your child’s Holy Cross education right now? One easy way to start earning money towards your tuition is by becoming

involved in the SCRIP program. As our current parents already know, SCRIP is a 100% FREE program which helps you earn a profit on money you are going to spend on

your everyday needs. Please check out the SCRIP information in this week’s bulletin. If you would like to learn more about SCRIP, I would be happy to sit down with you

and guide you through the process! Since spring is in the air, what a better way to start off on your spring landscaping than by using SCRIP!
As we begin our fourth marking period, I have had a lot of time to reflect on the choice that I made when I accepted the position of principal of YOUR school. I thank God

each day for showing me the way here. I hope that if you or someone you know is interested in learning more about Holy Cross, that you will encourage them to call me at

810-765-3591 to make a personal appointment.

In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund

Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate

“Give thanks to the Lord, for God is good; God’s love is everlasting!” (Ps.118:1)
In these days of the Easter season, the liturgy invites us personally to meet the Risen Lord and to come to recognize his dynamic effect on our daily lives. Just as the two

disciples recognized Jesus when He broke the bread, we too, the believing community of this 21st century, as we assemble here in our parish, come to know the Risen Lord

in our midst. Jesus continues to break the bread for us and with us. Jesus stays with us. He is present with us in the Holy Eucharist. He gives Himself to us and teaches

us to open our hearts. In the Holy Eucharist and in His word in Scripture, we pray in faith as did the apostle Thomas in last week’s gospel: “My Lord and my God!”
As members of one Body of Christ, one family of faith, of Our Lady on the River parish, we share together the hope of the Gospel message of Easter. We are also called to

be united in service and love for one another as we reach out and share what God has given us.
I am reminded again and inspired by the words of our late, great Pope John Paul’s last Urbi et Orbi blessing to Rome and to the world in which he said:
“Stay with us, Lord!
The Word and the Bread of the Eucharist, the mystery and the gift of Easter, remain down the centuries as a constant memorial of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of

Christ…
Together with all Christians throughout the world, we too repeat those words:
Jesus, crucified and risen, stay with us!”
We, the men and women of the third millennium, we too need you, Risen Lord! Stay with us now and until the end of time. Sustain us, we pray, on our journey.” (Joannes

Paulus II, March 30, 2005)
Blood Drive
The American Red Cross will be present for a blood drive at Holy Cross Church on Sunday, April 20th from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. An important training session for all

those who wish to volunteer to assist with this endeavor will be held at St. Catherine Activity Center on Tuesday, April 15th, at 9:30 a.m. A successful blood drive counts on

the support and help of many. Please consider being part of a team of helpers and come to the training session. This includes those greeting donors at the door, taking

registration, tying blood packs, serving refreshments, providing lunch for the nurses and helpers, etc. If you can help for an hour or two or for the entire time, we need you!

Come! If you can be a blood donor, we need you! Fill out the donor card, make time to come on April 20th to donate. By donating a single pint of blood at our upcoming

drive, you may save several lives!
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
If you haven’t yet sent in your reservation form to attend the always enjoyable volunteer appreciation dinner, please find a pencil and do it now! Look for the form on another

page and plan to come. This is for all who volunteer their services and time, even just once or twice, to many times. If you help at funeral luncheons, serving, dishwashing,

cooking, if you help prepare the church for seasons, if you help with mailings, if you help in any way, please come! Enjoy an excellent dinner and good company! Please

rsvp by April 15th. May Mary, mother of the Risen Lord, help us be authentic messengers of the light, life and joy of Easter each day.
With prayer, love and God’s blessings,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

Sharing the Gospel
Pretend Jesus is at your home. He sits at the dinner table with your whole family. He breaks bread with you. He fills each cup with a drink. He plays with you and helps you

with your homework. He tells you that he loves you. You thank him for the food and ask him to bless your family. Jesus says, "I've got to go, but
I'll remain in your heart forever."

Prayer
Lord, help me show others that I am a Christian
by my words and actions.

Mission for the Week
I will say, "I'll be glad to help. Tell me what to do first."

FIFTH SUNDAY AT FIVE
Vespers and Concert Series

The Fifth Sunday at Five Vespers & Concert was well attended last Sunday, Easter II. Father Jim, four seminarians, Daniel Susan and a full choir helped to lead

the beautiful Vespers service which celebrated the last liturgy in the Easter octave. It was followed by a stunning concert by the Marine City High School Chorale and Men's

Ensemble. A recent CD by these choirs included selections recorded in Holy Cross Church. MP3 audio files of both the service and the concert are on the Holy Cross

Church Website, www.holycrossonline.net. The next Fifth Sunday at Five Vespers & Concert will be on Sunday, June 29th, when Daniel Susan will follow Evening Prayer

with an organ recital entitled, “Pulling Out All the Stops.”

Operaton Rice Bowl
Thank you for your participation in Operation Rice Bowl -- It's not too late to make your contribution!
Your participation in Operation Rice Bowl makes a concrete difference in the lives of those living in poverty. Millions of Catholics in all 50 states have reached out to assist

our brothers and sisters around the world through traditional Lenten practices, by offering our prayers, by fasting, by learning, and by giving. 25% of our contributions remain

in our diocese to fund local hunger and poverty alleviation efforts.

Since 1975, Operation Rice Bowl has raised more than $160 million to fund development projects that improve peoples’ ability to access food around the world and

in local diocesan communities in the United States, serving as a tangible way for Catholics in the United States to connect in solidarity with our brothers and sisters here

and overseas. For more information, please visit their website, http://orb.crs.org/

Please bring your Rice Bowl to the back of the church or the church/parish office as soon as possible so that we can make our contribution.

Courageous Conversations

What does it mean to die well in the Twenty-First century? How does our Roman Catholic tradition influence our perspective and choices on issues related to

medical care, the use of life sustaining technology, and a happy death?

High-tech health care alone fails to meet the needs of people who are dying. People confronting advanced illness and their loved ones look to their faith community

for support and care.

This event will provide you with important information about practical actions that you and your faith community can take to significantly improve the care that people

with advanced illness and their loved ones receive at the end of life.
