As we continue to celebrate the Easter Octave, we are reminded that today is Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus’ resurrection as we heard in the Gospel from last Sunday is still
a mystery to the Apostles because they did not understand what was happening. Today’s readings are important because we are walking in the similar footsteps of the
Apostles. First, we are amazed because Jesus fulfills the promise that he would rise from the dead. His followers are shaken and confused because NO ONE has risen from
the dead. Does Jesus’ resurrection mean the end of time? Will they be standing before his judgment right then and there? These are just a few questions they may have had
at the moment when Jesus entered their gathering space. Just think of the ideas that would be racing around in your head if Jesus walked into your home right now. You
would be shaken and confused.
Second, we are similar to Thomas in how we react when we are not present for gathering with the risen Christ. We too would doubt and make bold statements about wanting
to probe the nail marks and wounds of Jesus. Think about it, how many times did we have to watch or replay an event on television because it was so amazing? Yet we still
doubt the event happened even though we see it with our own eyes. There are days when one’s faith has doubts just like St. Thomas, but Jesus does not reject us when we
have our misgivings, rather Jesus loves us back. Jesus takes Thomas by the hand and allows him to feel the wounds that pierced his hands, his feet and his side. And
maybe Jesus will do the same to us when we meet? Maybe he will have us feel the wounds from his crucifixion or maybe he will have us feel the wounds he took upon
himself so that we did not have to suffer alone: wounds from a broken heart, wounds from a broken body, or wounds from a broken spirit.
Jesus demonstrates to Thomas and to all who doubt that his Divine Mercy will be shown to all. And it will not be done in a way that is vengeful or unjust; rather it will be
shown with love and compassion. So let us continue to celebrate the resurrected Christ who is divine and merciful.
THIS AND THAT: My thanks to all the volunteers who made my Holy Week so very special to me. I was moved by the beauty of all the churches and the hard work that was
put in to make our parish so very special and unique. More important, I am grateful for the prayers that helped me to stay focused during the Holiest of Weeks. There were
many temptations that came my way that could have ruined my walk with Christ, but your prayers kept me strong. Words cannot express my gratitude.
Enjoy your week and keep me in your prayers as you are in mine!

A Note From The Principal
Happy Easter! While the actual celebration of Easter Sunday is over, the Easter season is actually fifty days long. While finishing my “Little Black Book,” I was reminded
that there are forty days of fasting during the Lenten season, but fifty days of celebration during the Easter season. Sometimes I think that the Lenten season feels so much
longer that the Easter season; however, I believe it is the waiting that makes it feel so much longer. This year, we continue to celebrate Easter until May 11th, or the feast
of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles.
As we prepare to enter the month of April, we are preparing for some very important days ahead. On Sunday, April 13th, the eighth graders of Holy Cross Catholic School
and Our Lady on the River Parish will celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation with our regional bishop, Bishop Earl Boyea. I am glad that our eighth graders will have this
experience with Bishop Boyea before he leaves for his new assignment in the Lansing Diocese. On Saturday, April 19th, the second graders of Holy Cross Catholic School
and Our Lady on the River Parish will celebrate their First Communion. These are such wonderful days in our church as we welcome our young people into deeper
participation in our faith.
One reason that I believe in Catholic education is that we are able to live our faith. One example is the amount of time and effort we put into sacramental preparation. The
teachers, with guidance from Mrs. Smith, do a wonderful job in preparing our young people. We are able to draw on these experiences daily, as we live our faith each day.
Please keep all who are preparing for these sacraments in your prayers.
Our Easter vacation is drawing to a close, and we return to school tomorrow, hopefully refreshed and revitalized. I look forward to bringing the Alleluia out of hiding, and
celebrating its return to our Friday Masses. I hope that you will have the opportunity to join us for Mass on Fridays at 9:00a.m.
With the return to school comes the return to our regular schedule. Our girls’ volleyball team will play their last regular season games. On Monday, March 31st, we will
be hosting McCormick Catholic Academy. On Wednesday, April 2nd, we will be hosting St. Mary’s. We will also be hosting the varsity volleyball tournament beginning
Friday, April 4th and ending on Saturday, April 5th. We wish our girls good luck. As volleyball season wraps up, we will be preparing for boys’ baseball and track. Please
pray for dry days for these outdoor events.
This year, Holy Cross Catholic School is proud to begin a new tradition in educational excellence. This year is the inaugural year for the Our Lady on the River Chapter of
the National Junior Honor Society. This organization is composed of students in grades six through eight who demonstrate high levels of scholarship, leadership, and
service. We will have more information in the coming weeks regarding our first induction ceremony.

Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
“Strong is God’s love for us; God is faithful forever: Come, let us praise God! Alleluia!”
The fifty days from Easter Sunday (March 23rd) to Pentecost (May 11th),are celebrated in joyful expectation as ONE feast day! The Paschal Candle, a symbol of
the Presence of the Risen Lord among us, the people of God, remains lighted near the altar through Pentecost Sunday. In today’s Scriptures, we find the believing
community is gathered together, just as we have gathered together as a believing community here in Our Lady on the River Parish. After Jesus’ death, the disciples
encountered the Risen Lord while they were together, and a sense of unity is seen as a strength of the early Church. We too are called to be open to the Lord’s Presence
and peace to strengthen us in unity as we worship together. Throughout the five weeks of Lent, three dozen parishioners gathered each week to encounter the Presence and
Peace of the Lord in reflection on the Scriptures. Most of those folks were mentioned a couple of weeks ago. In addition, we need to mention that Angela Rochon, Catherine
Nutter and Spencer Adkins were also among that number. May God’s life-giving Word continue to strengthen and enrich each one.
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
Once again, as has been the parish tradition, all volunteers, all who have helped in any way to contribute to the life and service of the parish community are invited
on April 26th to an Appreciation Dinner. It will take place at St Catherine Activity Center. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. followed by a catered dinner at 7:15 p.m. Please plan
to come, all of you who are 18 and older, and have given of your time and talent in any area in any of our parish sites. Please complete the form in the paper, and return it to
my attention so plans may be made to celebrate you and your goodness. We look forward to a great evening with all of you.
Thank You
Many thanks to all who helped us celebrate with inspiration and joy the sacred liturgies of the Triduum and Easter. Your voice, your service, your talent, your
peacefulness, your presence gave praise to our Risen Lord and enriched fellowship among us. Thank you! May the key words of today’s readings:
Peace, Holy Spirit, forgive, come to believe, have life, I send you….
bring a new zeal for us to bring others to Jesus’ peace, forgiveness and new life. In the strength of the gift of God’s Holy Spirit and by the power of the Holy Spirit, each of us
continues the mission of the Risen Lord Jesus.
Trivia: Chapter 19 of John’s Gospel tells us that Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early on the first day of the week. She ran and told the others; then Peter and the other
disciple went to the tomb! (John 19: 1-4)
New Question: In which chapter and verses of Ephesians does St. Paul eloquently express the mystery of God’s mercy toward us?
May God bless you with joy this week!
Love and prayerful support,
Sister Mary Ann Ankviak, csj p

Sharing the Gospel
Jesus gave the power to forgive sins through his apostles. Today the priests are his apostles. They remind us of how God forgives our sins. You have
the power to forgive those who hurt you. It is your choice to forgive as Jesus has forgiven you. It is healthy for you to forgive. Anger makes your body tense and your muscles
ache. When you forgive others, God sends his love to fill your body and soul with peace.
Prayer
Lord, help me forgive those who hurt me.
Mission for the Week
I will pray for those who hurt me and forgive them.

Cell Phone vs. Bible
I wonder what would happen if we treated our bible like we treat our cell phones?
What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
What if we flipped through it several times a day?
What if we used it to receive messages?
What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?
What if we gave it to kids as gifts?
What if we used it as we traveled?
What if we used it in case of an emergency?
What if we upgraded it to get the latest version?
This is something to make you go hmmm… where is my Bible? Unlike your cell phone, your bible will never be disconnected or drop you. Have a blessed
day!

Season for Nonviolence
January 30th - April 4th, 2008
As you know, the Season of Nonviolence is being celebrated from January 30th - April 4th, 2008. The closing ceremony is on Friday, April 4th at the Upper Level Acoustic
Cafe in Port Huron. We would like to share two quotes from the men who inspired this campaign to create an awareness of nonviolent principles and practice as a powerful
way to heal, transform and empower people’s lives and their communities:
We must be the change that we wish to see. ~Mohatmas Gandhi.
At the center of nonviolence stands the principle of love.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
