Happy Easter

Blessings to All! Our Lord has risen as he promised and now we celebrate his victory over sin and death. It truly is day to give thanks for what Christ has accomplished for

all believers. The true blessing has come by those who entered the RCIA process and ask for full admission into the faith. They are now in full communion and we must

continue our prayers for them as they continue their walk of faith with this community.
I am very happy with how the preparations for Holy Week came about. Sr. Mary Ann, Fr. Matt, our RCIA Director Cheryl Moreceri, our music ministers and all the

countless volunteers who helped ease the burdens of Holy Week off my shoulders. I am eternally grateful for your efforts and ask that God continue to bless you in your

ministry for this community. It truly is a humbling moment in one’s life when the stresses of a task can be eased by thoughtful and loving people.
Finally, I hope that the lessons learned over the Lenten Season can carry over throughout the Easter Season. The most important lesson learned, I hope, is that

Jesus did His act of love for the forgiveness of our sins. The least we can do in return is to live our lives with the same forgiving heart that Jesus has for his people.
All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim
P.S. Just a reminder that the offices will be closed this week so I can catch up on administrative work. However, I will be celebrating Masses this week in Algonac and in

Marine City.

A Note From The Principal

ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA!! One of the best parts of the Easter season is that we are able to bring the alleluia back into our liturgies. We sing the alleluia with enthusiasm

after a long Lenten season without it. Hopefully, we will be able to keep up that enthusiasm throughout the entire Easter season and into our everyday lives throughout the

year.
We are currently celebrating our Easter vacation. I pray that you and all of your families will be kept safe and find time to grow closer to God during this holiday season.

Easter vacation offers a time of renewal for everyone at school. We come back from our vacation with “new life.” We find that the dark days of winter have been washed

away and see the light that we have shine in what we see and do.
As we shine with this light, I hope that you will take the opportunity to join with us by becoming a part of our Holy Cross Catholic School family! We are now welcoming

new students in grades preschool through eight to Holy Cross Catholic School. Enrollment packages are available in the school office. I would be happy to sit down with

you and share my love of Holy Cross with you. Please call the school office at 810-765-3591 or email me at principal@holycrossonline.net to make your personal

appointment.
If you think that a Holy Cross Catholic education is out of your reach, I ask you to reconsider and take some of the steps we offer to make a Catholic school education a

reality. It is not too late to file a PSAS form! Filing a PSAS form will allow you to request scholarship assistance through the Archdiocese of Detroit. Even if you don’t think

that you’ll qualify, I urge you to try! Forms must be filed by April 7. These forms are available in all of the parish offices. They can also be downloaded from the

archdiocesan website at www.aodonline.org. Whether or not you qualify for diocesan assistance, completing this form is the first step toward requesting assistance from

the Fr. Bartone Scholarship Fund and the Blue Water Vicariate Scholarship Fund. I urge you to take this first step in becoming the change that you want to see in the

world.
As we celebrate the Easter season, I hope that you will find yourself not only closer to God, but closer to those around you. One gift that God has given us is the gift of

free will. We make our own choices and our own mistakes. I am very honest in my belief that I will not make everyone happy all of the time. I also know that I will make

mistakes. It is hard at times to make so many different decisions, especially knowing that inevitably someone will disagree with you. However, I know that the decisions I

make are in the best interest of the students that I serve. During this Easter season, I thank God for the gift of the many people who support me through their prayers and

actions. May you find renewed strength and faith as we thank God for keeping His promise.
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Our Lady on the River Parish
“Come, let us praise the God of mercy, Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!”

Easter time, The 50 Days…….
Let’s enter into the spirit of Easter! “Easter” can mean the opening feast this day or the whole 50 days. Our appreciation of the gift of redemption and celebrating

resurrection and newness of life can be expressed in many ways throughout the season, which climaxes on Pentecost Sunday. One way to enter the grace of the Easter

season is by offering a “word of thanks”…. Those around us need our support in their work. Everyone loves to hear a word of appreciation from time to time… Thank You to

all who helped make our Lenten and Holy Week preparations and the Easter celebration so beautiful! Thank you to Fr. Lopez, Fr. Ellis, Fr. Sig and all our priests, music

ministers, choirs, cantors, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Eucharist, RCIA ministry, servers, ushers, greeters, those who clean and decorate the church, money

counters, those who prayed the Stations, joined in Scripture study, and to all faithful parishioners whose presence and generosity bring our parish vitality and growth in faith

and charity. Thank you to one and all. A special way of extending thanks is the tradition of the annual “Volunteer Appreciation Dinner” which will be coming soon. Anyone 18

or older who serves in any volunteer capacity at any of our parish’s three sites is invited. Anyone who gives of time and talent, from dishwashing for funeral luncheons, to

serving, to parish council, to religious education catechists, to ministry to the sick, or any ministry already mentioned above, and even that not thought of, is invited. Pass

the word and look for the RSVP form in next week’s bulletin. You are appreciated!
Little White Books
To help increase your prayer life this Easter season, you are invited to take home the “little white book” of reflections available in the Church entrances. They hold

marvelous “six-minute” inspiring thoughts on Easter.
RCIA - Experiencing “Mystagogy”
Welcome to the new members of our Catholic faith community who joined our community at the Easter Vigil. Now, we continue to accompany them week by week

at the Eucharist when we gather in prayer, parish identity, mutual support and service. The word “Mystagogy” simply means reflecting on the mysteries of the call to faith,

and taking time to think back on the readings and rites experienced on “that most holy night of the Easter vigil.” Blessings to those “neophytes” (new ones), who were

anointed with sacred chrism in Confirmation, baptized into Christ, and received Eucharist for the first time. By the Lord has this been done - it is wonderful in our eyes!
Jesus Christ is risen today! With Him our deepest hopes are raised up and enlivened. As we receive Christ in the Eucharist today, we resound the words of the

Exsultet, the Proclamation sung at the Easter vigil. ”This is a day of God’s own joy. Rejoice, o’ earth, in shining splendor. The Risen Savior shines upon you!” Let us

celebrate the living reality of Christ present among us and renew our hope and faith as we go forward in our future. Happy Easter!

Trivia: The answer to last week’s question is Browning, Pippa Passes. Congratulations to John Vance!
New Question: In John’s gospel, who came to the tomb on Easter morning?
Love, peace and joy in the risen Lord,

Sharing the Gospel

Mary Magdalene was surprised when she found the empty tomb of Jesus. She ran and told Peter and John that his body was gone. Peter and John ran to the

tomb. They found no body, just strips of cloth. One piece was the cloth that covered the face of Jesus. Peter and John knew that Jesus was not in the grave, even though

they did not understand what it meant to rise from the dead.

Prayer
Jesus, you died and rose from the dead so I can share your life on earth and in heaven. Thank you.

Mission for the Week
I will tell someone that Jesus is alive.

Family Pledge of Nonviolence
Making peace must start within ourselves and in our family. Each of us,
members of the _____________________family, commit ourselves as best we can to become nonviolent and peaceable people:

To Respect Self and Others
To respect myself, to affirm others and to avoid uncaring criticism,
hateful words, physical attacks and self-destructive behavior.

To Communicate Better
To share my feelings honestly, to look for safe ways to express my anger, and to work at solving problems peacefully.

To Listen
To listen carefully to one another, especially those who disagree with me, and to consider others' feelings and needs rather than insist on having my own way.

To Forgive
To apologize and make amends when I have hurt another,
to forgive others, and to keep from holding grudges.

To Respect Nature
To treat the environment and all living things,
including our pets, with respect and care.

To Play Creatively
To select entertainment and toys that support our family's values and to avoid entertainment that makes violence look exciting, funny or acceptable.

To Be Courageous
To challenge violence in all its forms whenever I encounter it, whether at home, at school, at work, or in the community, and to stand with others who are treated unfairly.

This is our pledge. These are our goals. We will check ourselves on what we have pledged once a month on ___________ for the next twelve months so that we can help

each other become more peaceable people.

Season for Nonviolence
January 30th - April 4th, 2008

As you know, the Season of Nonviolence is being celebrated from January 30th - April 4th, 2008. We have been giving you regular updates. Angela Rochon from St.

Catherine will be speaking at the Algonac/Clay Library: March 24th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Building Homes for the Homeless in India. The influence of Mahatma

Gandhi's on Laurie Baker, renowned British-born Indian architect and humanitarian. Our former Associate Pastor, Father Koshy will join Angela. He is from the little village

area where Laurie Baker and his family lived. . The closing ceremony for the Season for Nonviolence is on Friday, April 4th at the Upper Level Acoustic Cafe in Port Huron.
A more personal expression of this compassionate nonviolent way of living is the “Family Pledge of Nonviolence.” This “Pledge” has been translated into many

languages and is beginning to be offered to families all over the world. It is being offered not just to families in the traditional sense, but to all kinds of families -- your work

family, your worshipping community family, whatever group of persons you live or work with closely. This “Pledge of Nonviolence” takes the Gospel and discipleship right into

our homes, into the places and moments of our daily living, just as Jesus was showing his disciple Andrew. We offer this pledge in our bulletin, asking you to pray and

consider how you can make this part of your life.
More information on this pledge is available at www.ipj-ppj.org, the website for the Institute for Peace and Justice, or by contacting Barbara Susan,

bamsusan@gmail.com, or calling the Parish office, (810) 765-3235.

Easter Office Hours
The Parish offices will be closed from 2:00 p.m. Holy Thursday, March 20th and reopen on March 31st. We apologize for the delayed notification and for any

inconvenience it has caused. May you all have a Blessed Easter until our return.

Meet Our RCIA Elect

Each year, Our Lady on the River welcomes new adult members into our parish community. These adults study, reflect and pray for a significant period of time.

When they decide to embrace the Catholic faith, they are welcomed into the community by receiving the Sacraments at Easter. This year, Our Lady on the River rejoices in

 welcoming the following new parishioners.

Heather White

Having been raised with no religious affiliation, Heather and her husband, Cliff, sought out a faith community for their young family. Upon worshipping at Holy Cross

Church, they felt very much at home. Last year, Cliff went through the RCIA process and this year, Heather has followed. Heather’s main role is being an active mom to her

three young daughters, one of whom attends Holy Cross School. Heather loves the community spirit of the parish and the acceptance she has felt as a newcomer.

Unfortunately, Cliff and Heather will be leaving the area so that Cliff may accept a new position in Rochester, New York. They will be looking for a new Catholic community

there that will be as welcoming as Our Lady on the River. We send them off with our prayers for a blessed and faith filled future.

Mya Meinheit

Mya entered the RCIA process after attending church with her fiancé Steve Beauvois. Steve and Mya will be married here in May of 2009. Mya felt the value of a

shared faith for their future family and decided to learn more about Catholicism. Mya had no religious background and the RCIA has helped her to learn a lot about God and

the Catholic faith. She loves the beauty of the Church and the welcome feeling she has received from all whom she has met. Mya is currently a medical assistant and has

plans to continue her education. She is a busy young lady, and that will continue as she and Steve look forward to their wedding next year. We wish them continued

blessings in their upcoming marriage.

Tracie Kiewicz

Tracie has been interested in the Catholic Church since she began dating her long time friend, John Mihelich. Tracie had attended holiday mass at St. Catherine’s

with John and his family. Now that they are engaged, she decided she would like to learn more about becoming Catholic. Debbie Langell, another friend, has been Tracie’s

sponsor and she has helped Tracie by attending information sessions with her and being a great support along the way. Tracie looks forward to Easter and her Baptism and

reception of the Eucharist and Confirmation. When Tracie is not working, she likes to volunteer and help out at Visions Adult Foster Care Center.

Kelli Mitti

Kelli is a busy young Student teacher at Richmond High School and hopes to be a full time high school teacher next year. She is also engaged to Craig Beauvais.

They will be married at Holy Cross Church in August. Although baptized in the Methodist faith, Kelli wanted to explore Craig’s faith and has decide she would like to become

Catholic so that she and Craig will share a common faith with their future family. Before the RCIA process, Kelli had attended some holiday masses with Craig and his

family, which lead to her interest in Catholicism. We wish Kelli and Craig continued blessings in their upcoming marriage and hope that their faith will be a unifying bond in

their family life together.

Words to Live By

To believe in Jesus is to accept what he says, even when it runs contrary to what others are saying. It means rejecting the lure of sin, however attractive it may be,

in order to set out on the difficult path of the Gospel virtues.

Fr. Matt’s Matters
Happy Resurrection Sunday!

On Palm Sunday we heard the proclamation of the Passion Story of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew. This year I tried to discern some inner motivations the

Gospel might give for the people who wanted the life of Jesus ended. There are the obvious charges given by the Jerusalem Jewish religious authorities. The primary charge

being violation of religious law in making one’s self equal to God as God’s Son and/or the Messiah (blasphemy). If the Jewish people eagerly awaited the Messiah (one man)

to come from their own ranks, why would Jesus of Nazareth be such an unworthy candidate? Biblical and other historic sources say there were many “would be” Messiahs

in the decades before, during and after the years of Jesus. Perhaps the chief priests and elders were weary of such types who stirred-up the people? It’s true that false

Messiahs were a bane on religious stability. Yet, it’s also true that corruption among religious leaders must be taken into account. In religion (and politics) misguided

upstarts and misguided official leaders often inhabit the same time and place.
As to my above query, this passage from Matthew 27:18 leapt from the page: “He (the procurator Pilate) knew, of course, that it was out of JEALOUSY that they

(chief priests and elders) handed Jesus over” (for condemnation and the death penalty). Ah, what jealousy (envy), that truly ‘deadly sin’, can create, even in us with miniscule

power and privilege. Another operative dynamic was ‘let’s kill the messenger’’, because ‘He has the nerve to reveal our actual corruptions’. And yet Jesus on His Cross said:

“they know not what they do”. We humans can be so “off”, we do evil while convinced it is good! In contrast is the spirit of willingness to recognize (sometimes with surprise)

and accept God’s works of love and truth in Jesus, and in other people today! Our love of and faith in Jesus springs from His solitary perfect accomplishment of God’s will.
Our internalization of the Church’s faith in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ as the Father’s stamp of absolute approval upon His Son’s works of Love, enables

the same Love in us. The Cross (death) of Jesus is just another tragedy without the new life (light) which is His Resurrection. And the Resurrection of Jesus has no reason

without His sacrificial love. The Life, Death and Resurrection of Christ are summated as making it possible for forgiveness to infinitely multiply, but only with our choice to

cooperate. The world needs as much as ever forgiving, reconciling love. As of late, how successful is our journey in the cosmos of the Lord’s multiplication table of

requesting and offering forgiveness? This question and its honest answer are eternally significant! More later on the depths of meaning in the Resurrection.
 In the Risen Lord,
 Fr. Matt Ellis
