A Note From The Principal

This week we celebrated the feast day of St. Joseph. How amazing it must have been for Joseph! Our

Little Black Book for Lent reminds of the confusion that played out when Joseph learned that Mary was

pregnant. The fact that both Mary and Joseph opened themselves and answered God’s call plays a

large part of who we are today. How many times have we doubted ourselves or someone else? Have we

heard God? More importantly, did we listen?
We are blessed as a parish to have a Catholic school. We are also the only PreK-12 Catholic

campus in the Blue Water Vicariate. With all of the changes taking place around us, I sincerely hope

that you will consider making a change for your child by becoming a Holy Cross Crusader! We are

pleased to be able to offer small class sizes with personal attention in a Christ-centered atmosphere.

Please call the school office at 810-765-3591 to arrange a personal visit for you and your child.
Now is the time to start making plans. You can start by making SCRIP a part of your family’s

life. Believe me, there is nothing easier than SCRIP! It is a time-saving, money-saving, tuition saving

program that makes your life easier while enriching your child or grandchild’s future. This is truly a

fundraiser that doesn’t cost you anything! Please stop in the office to learn more about SCRIP today.
As you consider your educational options, consider taking advantage of the various financial

assistance programs which are available for Catholic school students and families. The application for

grants from the Archdiocese of Detroit (PSAS) is due at the beginning of April, and is not accepted if it

is late. This application must be mailed in. The amount of time it takes is well worth the investment,

because qualifying families receive $600 for elementary tuition and $700 for high school tuition. Even if

you don’t think that you will qualify, I urge you to try: applying for this grant makes you eligible for

scholarships through our parish. Where there is a will, there is a way. I hope you will take the steps to

find your way here to Holy Cross Catholic School.
Do you have a child who may be ready for preschool? Perhaps your son, daughter, or

grandchild is ready for Kindergarten? We will be having a special open house for your ‘little Crusaders’

in April. We look forward to becoming your partner in education!

In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Sharing the Gospel

Whenever the Israelites touched the rod with a snake on it in Moses' hand, they were healed.

In the same way, Jesus wants everyone to be healed from sin. Clean up your bedroom. Set the table.

Take out the trash. Pull the weeds from the garden. Pray for the sick on your street. When you do good

things everyone will know how much you love God and everyone God made.

Prayer
Holy Spirit, show me how to be helpful to my family and friends.

Mission for the Week
I will give thanks to God in the morning, at lunch, and at bedtime.

Archdiocese Tuition Assistance

As a result of the Stewards for Tomorrow Campaign and the establishment of an Archdiocesan

Endowment, the Archdiocese of Detroit extends tuition assistance grants to Catholic families with

children in grades 1-12 attending Catholic Schools.
A Student Aid Form, must be completed by each family applying, and mailed directly to

Private School Aid Service (PSAS) in Lakewood, Ohio. Awards are based solely on financial need.

Receiving an award in previous years does not guarantee award for the current year.
Forms are available at your Catholic school or in the Parish Office at Holy Cross.
In addition to the Archdiocese Assistance, you may apply for assistance from Our Lady on the River

Parish for Cardinal Mooney High School students, if you are an active member of the parish. Contact

the office for more information.

What happens after you attend a healing Mass?

Here are real life testimonies…

The Lord has brought many painful childhood memories to the surface as T was being prayed

over. The pain is real, I cry then the Lord lifts the pain and fills me with his love and healing power. Then

I feel light as a feather floating on a cloud. His love engulfs me.

My experience at healing masses is always the same. In whatever state of mind I come, I

leave with a deep sense of peace.

Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate

“I am the Light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows Me will have the light of life!”

Today marks the halfway point between Ash Wednesday and Easter! With this 4th Sunday

(Laetare-Rejoice), we find ourselves praying for more honesty, clarity and purity in our relationship with

Jesus and one another. Someone once said that we can grow quite accustomed and familiar with our

being loved through Jesus taking it for granted rather than as granted through the Spirit.
In either selection of the Gospel today, the 2nd scrutiny story of the blind man (which is the story of

every Christian), or cycle B Nicodemus event, each of us can resonate with a hesitancy and/or spiritual

or psychological blindness that continues to tug at us.
Lent calls us to simply see with the eyes of faith, and to let go of the fears, opinions,

prejudices that blind us, hard as that may be. Faith is free gift. Faith is hard work. We can pray in this

second part of Lent, for patience, acceptance, trust and endurance as we encounter the bumps,

annoyances, insults or rejections which might become the very Lenten penances we did not ask for.

Our Lenten prayer should help take away our blindness so that we can look into the hearts of others

and love them as brothers and sisters, turning hatred to love and conflict to peace. Getting to that point

is often difficult.
As we heard in last week’s scripture, taking things on hearsay, just on the word of another,

can be a dangerous step. There always remains the necessity of each person learning to trust, believe

and commit to the truth as did the blind man and Nicodemus in our respective Gospels today. We all

need God more than we realize. Yes, “God so loved the world” (John 3:16), and today God still sends

the Light of life to each of us so that we might live in the truth, walk in the light and experience being so

loved by God, encouraging one another along the way.
Two concluding thoughts for the week:
1) A line from the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie Joe Versus the Volcano: “Dear God, thank you for my

life. I forgot how big and wonderful it is!”
2) “We have a Christian duty to encourage one another. Many a time words of praise or thanks or

appreciation or cheer have kept people on their feet. Blessed is the one who speaks such a word.”

(William Barclay)
And finally, as a follow-up of Bible Trivia, here’s a Lenten Word Scramble for the second half of

Lent. Unscramble the letters week by week for an Easter prize! This week’s 7 scramble: 1.HAS

EWDYASDEN, 2. SINFTAG, 3. CASFIRECI, 4. DGOO WOSKR, 5. ETLN, 6.ENCANEP, 7. RPEETN
Good luck!

God’s blessings of good health and joy,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj
pastoralassociate@ourladyontheriver.net

This week, two of our candidates, Kristin Praught and Julie Thompson, give their

introductions.

My name is Kristin. I attended Algonac High, and then went on to attend Macomb Community

College. Now I work for an oxygen & medical equipment company. My family moved to Harsen’s Island

when I was eleven. My father, Jim, a retired Detroit police officer, wanted to move here to be as far away

as possible. My mother, Darcy, worked as a teacher’s assistant at St. Catherine’s School. Both of my

parents now are enjoying retirement on Harsen’s Island. I have a younger brother, Andy, who also went

to Algonac High and works with me.
The reason I came to RCIA was to learn a bit more about religion, and to see if it was really

for me. I had a lot of issues with the thought of “organized religion”. My fiancé, John, is such a deep

believer, so I had to see what I was missing out on. So far, I’m becoming very comfortable with

everything that I’ve been learning.
It was a difficult situation for me because I was baptized Lutheran and attended a Catholic

School. As a kid, when the school went to Mass, I had to sit out on the side lines – that’s how it felt to

me. No one ever explained why I couldn't participate. When you’re a kid, you never want to watch your

peers do something you can’t be included in. In my mind, God would never turn someone away just

because they weren’t Catholic. Now, that I’m getting married, it is important to me that our family will

not have two beliefs and our children won’t be confused about this. It will mean a lot to have the

opportunity to go to Church every Sunday as a family.
The other day, I reached my turning point. I was driving home from work in traffic for over an

hour on a two lane road that narrows into one. The car next to me tried speeding past me. So I started

speeding up determined not to let him cut me off and went until he was out of road. All of a sudden

something just hit me and I started crying. I felt so awful doing that. The next day I was in his position

on the road, and the lane ended. The difference was that the car behind me was nice enough to let me

in. Something as simple as that drive home from work made me realize that I want to be a much kinder

person every chance I can. Building better relationships with God’s people will deepen my relationship

with God. That is the reason I came to RCIA. To build my relationship with God, with His people, with

my family, with my fiancée.

Kristen will be welcomed into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter vigil

through a profession of faith and the reception of the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Please

support and encourage Kristen with your continued prayer.
Hello. My name is Julie Thompson. I work at St. John Macomb Hospital as a nurse assistant.

I really enjoy helping people. I hope that one day I will be able to accomplish my dream of becoming a

Registered Nurse.
My father and mother were both raised Catholic, and attended St. Catherine’s School. They

are current members of Our Lady on the River Parish. My grandparents are also members here and

attend Mass regularly.
I came to the RCIA to complete my Christian Initiation Sacraments, and to be confirmed. I

also came because my fiancée, Mike, and I are getting married in October. We decided to come

together to learn, grow and strengthen our faith as we begin our lives together.
As I grow older and become more responsible, I realize the need and significance of having

God in my life. I can’t even recall all the times in the last six months, that I have opened a bill and

prayed to God to help me pay it and every month, He faithfully has helped.
I also have come to realize that I want our children to be raised Catholic. I believe that prayer

and faith can mold a child’s frame of mind. I feel that if a child is taught at a young age to pray to God,

have good morals, and go to Church, they will grow up with a good head on their shoulders.
I am enjoying my journey thus far through the RCIA process. I have learned a lot, and I am

very excited to receive the sacraments and finally become a full member of the Catholic Church.

Julie will complete her Christian Initiation sacraments at the Easter Vigil with the reception of

Confirmation. Please welcome Julie with your continued prayer and encouragement.

Lenten Observances
The law of fasting binds people between 18 and 60 years of age and allows only one full meal

a day but does not prohibit taking some food in the morning and evening, drinking ordinary liquids does

not break the fast.
The law of abstinence binds people 14 years and older and forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, the

products of milk or condiments made of animal fat. Permissible are soups flavored with meat, meat

gravy and sauces.
Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays in Lent.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only days of
both fast and abstinence.

Criminal Justice Ministry

Ministry with people who are incarcerated is a work of mercy and recognizes the inherent worth and

dignity of all people. Each member of the faith community is reminded of the universal need for

repentance when faced with the reality and consequences of crime. When visiting a jail or prison, a

person called to this ministry brings words of God’s loving presence, the potential for forgiveness and a

message of hope. This ministry also reminds us we must respond to God’s call to service by being

involved in a communal way. The faith given in grace at baptism can grow and deepen when we reach

out to persons who are imprisoned.
We invite all those who may be called to ministry with people who are imprisoned to attend a training

program to further develop that call. Ralph Paquette, parishioner at St. Mary’s, St. Clair, is already

involved in this ministry and will be attending the training. If you would like to ride with Ralph, give him a

call at 810-329-6879.

Words To Live By

The believer knows he can count on the power of God the Father, of the risen Christ, and of

the Spirit of life. This prospect gives substance to the dedication of all those who in a multiplicity of

ways, lovingly take care of the sick and the suffering..
                            -Pope John Paul II
FR. MATT’S MATTERS

Last year I was at a wedding for a relative on the evening of the Annual Holy Cross Dinner and

Auction. This year I attended. Fr. Jim and I enjoyed the evening immensely. So much work, time and

finances went into it that everyone involved is thanked and congratulated. In these economic times it is

heartening to witness generosity.
Many thanks also for yet another excellent Lenten Friday fish dinner hosted at St. Catherine’s

Activity Center. The various workers sacrificed time and energy, yet they too seemed to be having a

great time. Don’t forget that on the 27th the Fish Dinner served between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. is right

next door to the St. Catherine Church where at 7:00 p.m. we pray the Stations of the Cross. Speaking

of prayer, the Sacrament of Penance is offered by way of a group service with time for individual

confession during the service which starts at 1:00 p.m. on the 28th, Saturday, in St. Catherine’s

Church.

SCRIPTURE/TRADITION/MAGISTERIUM, PT.2

Christianity reached complete organizational separation from Judaism (the Jewish

faith/religion) several decades after the death/resurrection of Jesus Christ. This was due to conflicts,

probably unsolvable, between Jewish people who believed Jesus to be the crucified and resurrected

Messiah, and those who did not. Historically, it seems inevitable a schism (a split) would result within

the umbrella of Judaism (even though it was tolerant and big enough for significant variations among

Jewish adherents, as in more liberal and more conservative). One stand out reason was that St. Peter,

St. Paul and other apostles of Jesus agreed to open Christian ‘Church’ membership to all human beings

without certain traditionally necessary rituals of Jewish initiation. Also, Christians needed more

organization as they realized the Second Coming of Jesus Christ in glory might not be for ‘quite some

time’!
Being Jewish and living in its culture and lands, Jesus and the first disciples relied on the

spoken word and memory. There is no evidence or reason to think that Jesus had anyone writing His

biography while He walked/ talked. Today, we’re skeptical of eyewitness/memory reports and

‘storytelling’, because reports change as they are passed on and witnesses remember the same event

differently. A big ‘however’ is appropriate when comparing the passing on of foundational Jewish stories

in ancient times by word of mouth. Histories were first told, then after any number of years were put to

writing, then collected, then amalgamated. Lacking high volume printing technology, the ancients took

very seriously the responsibility to verbally pass on their traditions precisely, even in a memorized

manner, word for word. First Century Christians grew through time to need/have their own Tradition and

traditions, writings and leaders who guided not only in the present, but had authority to interpret the

Tradition. That is what is meant by the Catholic Church when it tells us we have Scripture, Tradition and

Teaching Authority. We’ll continue next time to define these three concepts and how they work together

(interact) for us so that we have the fullness of what Christ needs His Church to be.

God love and bless you,
Fr. Matt Ellis

Parish Lenten Prayer For Vocations

“Every one of us is called by the Lord;
The important thing is to know how
To answer His call.”
          Blessed John XXIII

We are now into the fourth Lenten week of inviting parishioners to have the privilege of taking

home the PARISH BOOK OF VOCATION PRAYER with a crucifix. For the past two weeks, people

from all three sites of our parish have had the experience of setting aside a brief and simple

“prayer-time”, using the resources offered in the manual. They have also been writing comments about

the week for others to appreciate. During the Easter season, some of these will be published in the

bulletin.
At present, this opportunity is available at the 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Mass. If

you are interested in taking part, please just come up when the presider at the Liturgy makes the

announcement at the end of the Mass.
It is appreciated if the book and crucifix be returned each Thursday directly to the parish office

so that it is available for the following Sunday.

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word will continue through the remaining Sundays of Lent for

children, ages 4 through 11. The children will gather at the 9:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross and at the

10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Catherine.
They are welcomed at the beginning of the Liturgy to come forward and proceed to a separate

area to hear and share the scripture readings suitable to their age and ability, and return to the

assembly at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This is a good opportunity for helping the

children towards fuller participation the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist.

Exposition of Blessed Sacrament

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held for one hour before or after

Mass as follows:

every Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at St. Catherine

the first Tuesday (April 7th) following the
7:30 a.m. Mass at St. Catherine
and
the first Friday (April 3rd) following the
9:00 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross

Benediction and closing will follow after one hour of adoration. Support of this devotion is vital.

Our pastor called this day Laetare Sunday? Why?

The term laetare comes from the first Latin word of the entrance song for the Fourth Sunday of

Lent, Laetare Jerusalem (Rejoice Jerusalem). Laetare Sunday is mid-Lent, reminding us that Lent is

half over, and that the rigors and discipline of the season will soon end in the fulfillment of Easter joy.

Flowers and instrumental music are officially permitted on this Sunday, in contrast to the other

Sundays of Lent.
Historically, Laetare Sunday is a remnant of the time in early church practice when the Lenten

season was only three weeks long. This was the last Sunday before the Lenten fast and disciplines

were to begin. It was celebrated with music, flowers, food and joy.
Often it is referred to as Rose Sunday, with the optional liturgical color rose dominating the Sunday

celebration. Historically, the color was associated with the custom of bringing roses on this particular

Sunday to the elect, those preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil.
In England, this Sunday is known as Mothering Sunday, similar to our Mother's Day. The

origins for this title are most likely related to the pre-Vatican II Lectionary reading from Galatians 4:26,

in which Jerusalem is referred to as our mother. The entrance song for this Sunday still retains the

reference to Jerusalem as a mother offering nourishment and contentment at "her consoling breasts."
This Laetare Sunday rejoice and thank God for the upcoming Easter joy, as you offer a

special prayer for the elect within your parish community.
