During Lent, one of the Gospel readings I like praying with and reading is the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:5-42). Jesus does something that goes against Jewish custom and even Jewish law. He speaks with a Samaritan, but not just a Samaritan but a Samaritan woman who according to some theologian scholars would be considered an outcast from her own community. Maybe that is why I enjoy praying with this passage because Jesus reaches out to the outcasts of His community and other communities and loves them back to His Father in heaven. The woman at the well is striving for acceptance and desires to have her faith fulfilled. She wants that water which comes from life giving streams so her thirst can be quenched. It is similar to those who are going through the RCIA process. They are here in our community so we can assist them in quenching their thirst for Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. They are not looking anymore. These men and women have found Jesus and we must assist them through prayers and encouragement helping them embrace their new faith life.
However, Jesus does remind the Samaritan woman that there is a price to be paid for drinking from the life-giving streams. Jesus tells her and for that matter us that we must repent for our sins committed through human weakness. Even Jesus’ banter is a reminder that we cannot hide our sins from him. She tries to play coy and innocent however Jesus reveals that she is far from perfect. He humbles her with compassion and gentleness in describing her not so innocent lifestyle. Jesus reminds us too that he KNOWS what we are doing and saying, so do not act surprised when he confronts our behavior. He just wants us to admit our sins, seek forgiveness for them and avoid those temptations in the future. If we have that honesty with Jesus he will not resort to using reminders that sometimes make us uncomfortable. Maybe that is why I appreciate this Gospel because Jesus keeps me honest about myself and my actions. But, not just me, all of us.
A few reminders to pass along this week: First, don’t forget to come and enjoy the Fish Fry at the St. Catherine Activity Center. Many men and women have given of their time and talent to provide a wonderful dinner. When the meal is made out of love, it always tastes better and puts a smile on the face. I saw a lot of smiles leaving our activity center last week. Come and see for yourself! Second, my thanks to all the Holy Cross School staff for putting on an exceptional open house. Our teachers and staff made all who attended feel welcomed and wanted. I also want to thank our students who gave of their time to help out by leading tours, setting up displays or taste testing the popcorn. Finally, to the parents who gave of their time and talent in working hand in hand with our teachers in building up our community for all to witness: you are the best!
All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim

A Note From The Principal

As I was reading in My Little Black Book for Lent, I came across Friday’s reading, which talks about fish fries. The Catholic Church, according to the author, is credited with making fish fries so popular during Lent. With this being the case, I hope that you will join our parish at St. Catherine’s for this month’s fish fries. It was wonderful to see our students, parents, and parishioners all come together as one family for this meal. The food was great…as was the price!
I would like to thank the many new families who joined us at last Sunday’s Open House. It was both refreshing and rewarding to see new families from our parish and community interested in making Holy Cross Catholic School their partners in education. A Holy Cross education is truly an investment, and one that pays off over time. A number of our visiting families attended Holy Cross as student. am honored to be able to help this tradition carry on.
Are you a grandparent who wants to buy more than toys for your grandchild? Please consider helping your grandchild become a Holy Cross Crusader! Now is the time to start making plans. You can start by making SCRIP a part of your family’s life. Believe me, there is nothing easier that SCRIP! It is a time-saving, money-saving, tuition saving program that makes your life easier while enriching your child or grandchild’s future.
As you consider your educational options, consider taking advantage of the various financial assistance programs which are available for Catholic school students and families. The application for grants from the Archdiocese of Detroit (PSAS) is due at the beginning of April, and is not accepted if it is late. This application must be mailed in. The amount of time it takes is well worth the investment, because qualifying families receive $600 for elementary tuition and $700 for high school tuition. Even if you don’t think that you will qualify, I urge you to try: applying for this grant makes you eligible for scholarships through our parish. Where there is a will, there is a way. I hope you will take the steps to find your way here to Holy Cross Catholic School.
I would like to thank our students and teachers for the excellent job that they did and continue to do in illustrating the educational opportunities available at Holy Cross. The work exhibited at our Learning Fair was outstanding! We even had a number of students do science projects because they WANTED to, not because they had to! That is truly embracing learning! I would also like to thank the many parents who joined us to support their children and our school by being available to visit our exhibits and answer questions from our visiting families!
Do you have a child who may be ready for preschool? Perhaps your son, daughter, or grandchild is ready for Kindergarten? We will be having a special open house for your ‘little Crusaders’ in April. We look forward to becoming your partner in education!

In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal
Sharing the Gospel

In the temple people hollered: "Buy a cow." "Buy a sheep." "Buy a dove." Jesus got very angry. He wanted everyone to honor God in the temple. Jesus wants your actions to show that you love God. He wants you to care for this world. He wants you to welcome everyone to your church. He wants you to pray, sing, and listen to His word in church.

Prayer
Holy Spirit, show me how to honor God in church.

Mission for the Week
I will honor God by praying, singing, and listening to his word in church.

Archdiocese Tuition Assistance

As a result of the Stewards for Tomorrow Campaign and the establishment of an Archdiocesan Endowment, the Archdiocese of Detroit extends tuition assistance grants to Catholic families with children in grades 1-12 attending Catholic Schools.
A Student Aid Form, must be completed by each family applying, and mailed directly to Private School Aid Service (PSAS) in Lakewood, Ohio. Awards are based solely on financial need. Receiving an award in previous years does not guarantee award for the current year.
Forms are available at your Catholic school or in the Parish Office at Holy Cross.
In addition to the Archdiocese Assistance, you may apply for assistance from Our Lady on the River Parish for Cardinal Mooney High School students, if you are an active member of the parish. Contact the office for more information.
As in keeping with the school and parish we will be collecting “Rice Bowl” change during the season of lent and the money will be given to our local St. Vincent de Paul Society who do so much to help the families stay warm and eat during this cold LONG winter.
First Communion and Confirmation will take place next month. First Communion at Holy Cross will be on April 25th at 11:00 a.m. and at St. Catherine at 4:00 p.m. Confirmation will be on April 28th (Tuesday) at 6:00 p.m. at Holy Cross.
Have a wonderful week,

What happens after you attend a healing Mass?

Here are real life testimonies…

My grandson was 5 or 6 months old and was always in a lot of pain because of water on the brain. The doctor was going to put a shunt in his brain. Corey rarely smiled and never stiffened his legs when he stood up. We took him to a healing mass, after being prayed over, he began to laugh delightedly and when we stood him up, his legs stiffened and he stood! He did not need a shunt.
	~Jeanne

I have been physically healed recently. My shoulder had been sore for 3 months. After being prayed over, it was much improved. The pain was gone.

Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
Jesus Christ is the new temple of God;
Come, let us worship!

On this third Sunday in Lent, the Church offers us two options for the scriptures. One is to continue with the readings from Cycle B, thus the Gospel of the Cleansing of the Temple; and the other, where there are catechumens in the RCIA, is to focus on the Gospel of the Samaritan Woman at the Well from Cycle A.
Either way, something significant happens. The focus is on openness to God’s Spirit, the Presence of Jesus in our lives and the gift of faith. Faith is a gift, freely given by God. We do not have to do anything to earn faith. Faith is an invitation to an intimate relationship, a friendship with God. God always takes the initiative, acting first in this gracious offer. God waits patiently for our response to enter into a richer, fuller, and more meaningful life.
Jesus’ walk into Samaria and his talk with the woman at the well revealed Who He is to her, and revealed who she truly was to herself, and if we listen closely enough, He is also revealing to us who and what we really are.
Everybody has to be somebody to be somebody to anybody! Jesus transforms our empty spaces into holy places! Isn’t it true that we all want to come to know Jesus? We all are looking for the sources of life-giving water. We all desire the gift of the Spirit. Psalm 95 today encourages: “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” The source of living water remains present, but it cannot flow if we’ve clogged up all the outlets. Are we afraid to “listen” for God’s presence in our own lives? Jesus became a “holy” place so that we might each also become a “holy” place with the living water of God’s Spirit dwelling within. Baptism is the Sacrament of Initiation into living the faith-life. We then come to realize that we need the grace of the other sacraments to quench our thirst. Holiness, remember, is not our own doing, but God’s. It just takes time, mostly a good portion of it. We need to be patient if for no other reason than the fact that God is patient with us.
We continue Lent this week, hopefully letting God get our attention so that we might hear of His holy presence in faith, in all of life, and especially within ourselves.
St. Patrick and St. Joseph
Tuesday of this week is a great day to call to mind the “Breastplate of St. Patrick”, a simple prayer of praise. “Christ is with me. Christ within me. Christ behind me. Christ before me. Christ beside me. Christ to win me. Christ in the hearts of all who love me. Christ in the mouth of friend or stranger.”
Then on Thursday, we celebrate St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, and patron of the Congregation of St. Joseph, hence the initials CSJ. As we become more aware of the greatness of St. Joseph’s mind and heart, may his life speak powerfully of humility, obedience and faithful love.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Happy St. Joseph’s Day!

Wedding Anniversary
March, 2009

Dennis & Veronica Gerow	March 4th	37 years
Joe & Beth Briesmeister	March 30th	19 years

May God keep you and continue to
Bless you for many years to come.
This week Michael Wettlaufer, a catechumen, and Brenda Daniel, a candidate give their introductions.

My name is Michael Wettlaufer, I am a thirty-one year old superintendent at a commercial/industrial roofing company. In my free time, I love to be outdoors, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, dirt-biking, etc. I have not been going to Church on a regular basis since I was eight years old because my mother had to start working on Sundays. Also, I have not been baptized.
Now that I am engaged, and looking to starting a family myself, I believe I need to get back with God and the Church on a regular basis.
My fiancée and I are getting married on October 24, 2009. Our wedding will be at St. Catherine where my fiancée was baptized and received First Communion. She is also in the RCIA process, preparing to receive Confirmation. I am very happy to be part of this faith process with her as we begin our journey in life together.
When we first met Fr. Lopez, I was not sure if this was the right place for me. After a few meetings with him, I knew this was the place I needed to be. Since the start of RCIA, I could not be happier with the choice to bring God back into my life as a major priority and receive the sacraments at Our Lady on the River Parish.

Michael will be welcomed into the faith through Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

My name is Brenda Daniel, and I am a stay-at-home mom. I have been married for eight years to my husband, Chuck. We have three children: Charlie, age 7; Nate, age 5; and Riley, age 3.
It has been a long journey for me to make the decision to become Catholic, and to bring God back into my life. A few months after our marriage, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. She fought for four years. It seemed that one day she was getting better and the next, we were calling an ambulance. She was rushed to the hospital, and the next day, she was gone. I remember she was lying in the hospital bed with all the tubes and wires hooked up. She looked at my brother and me, and asked: “When is He coming for me?” She was not scared and was comforted knowing that she would be with God.
I want to have the faith that my mom had. I want my children to know God and what He does for us. I want to share with you my mom’s favorite Bible verse from Matthew 7:7:
“Ask, and it will be given you;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Brenda will be welcomed into full communion in the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil through a profession of faith, confirmation and receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist for the first time.

Please pray for Michael and Brenda and
welcome them with your smiles and warmth of hospitality.

Lenten Observances
The law of fasting binds people between 18 and 60 years of age and allows only one full meal a day but does not prohibit taking some food in the morning and evening, drinking ordinary liquids does not break the fast.
The law of abstinence binds people 14 years and older and forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, the products of milk or condiments made of animal fat. Permissible are soups flavored with meat, meat gravy and sauces.
Abstinence is to be observed on all Fridays in Lent.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only days of
both fast and abstinence.
Died in Christ

Please remember in your prayers:

	V Florence McGregor
	V James Knapp
	V Eugene Pollock

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
Let the Perpetual Light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

Anxiety Attacks

Anxiety illnesses affects more than 23 million Americans. Common anxiety disorders are panic attacks. A panic attack can come on without warning and may not be related to any particular situation. The symptoms may include a pounding heart, difficulty breathing, dizziness, shaking, sweating, chest pain, nausea, depersonalization, numbness, fear of dying and fear of going crazy. Heredity, hyperventilation, metabolic factors and psychological components may contribute to a panic attack. Follow up with your doctor if you suspect you have an anxiety disorder. Therapy options include medication, cognitive therapy, and relaxation techniques.

“Give Hope to Jesus in Disguise”
March 22nd

Through The Catholic Relief Services Collection, people are given hope each day. The mother is given medicine, enabling her to live with, not die from, HIV/AIDS. The man is lovingly relocated and given free legal counsel. The child is given food and a future. Each embodies “Jesus in Disguise.” Each is restored, renewed, and refreshed by hope.
When you donate to The Catholic Relief Services Collection, you are not giving just your money. You are giving hope. Your donations are distributed to many organizations that share in the Catholic mission of promoting the sacredness of human life and the dignity of the human person:
Please visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections to learn more about the agencies benefitting from the Catholic Relief Services Collection and their valuable work.

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word will continue through the remaining Sundays of Lent for children, ages 4 through 11. The children will gather at the 9:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross and at the 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Catherine.
They are welcomed at the beginning of the Liturgy to come forward and proceed to a separate area to hear and share the scripture readings suitable to their age and ability, and return to the assembly at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This is a good opportunity for helping the children towards fuller participation the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist.

Words To Live By

Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—-in a word, to know himself—-so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.
                          -Pope John Paul lI-

Parish Lenten Prayer For Vocations

“Every one of us is called by the Lord;
The important thing is to know how
To answer His call.”
                Blessed John XXIII

We are now into the third week of inviting parishioners to have the privilege of taking home the Parish Book of Vocation Prayer with a crucifix. For the past two weeks, people from all three sites of our parish have had the experience of setting aside a brief and simple “prayer-time”, using the resources offered in the manual.
They have also been writing comments about the week for others to appreciate. During the Easter season, some of these will be published in the bulletin.
At present, this opportunity is available at the 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Mass. If you are interested in taking part, please just come up when the presider at the Liturgy makes the announcement at the end of the Mass.
It is appreciated if the book and crucifix be returned each Thursday directly to the parish office so that it is available for the following Sunday. Thank you.

Prayer on St. Patrick's Day

Dear Lord, Your servant, Saint Patrick,
was first a slave to, and then a servant of,
Your people in Ireland.
As he endured years of hardship as a slave,
so help us to persevere through trials
which seem to serve no purpose at the time.
As Patrick's time in Ireland served him well,
after he was called to be a bishop of that land, so help us to see how our
sufferings strengthen us to do Your will.
Later, as Patrick's people withstood great hardship, protected Your word
in monasteries, and brought Your Church to many new lands, so help us also to grow in faithfulness to You and be Your instruments of the world's conversion.
Amen.
Mrs. Lund
