FR.MATT’S MATTERS
REGARDING CHRISTS DEATH AND ANTI-SEMITISM
Holy Week approaches, and we have heard much from John’s Gospel in this first year of the three year Sunday Bible cycle. On Good Friday each year we read

the ‘passion’ story of Jesus from John’s Gospel. It is worthwhile to clarify the choice of words in John’s Gospel. His Gospel makes frequent use of the phraseology “the

Jews” in several contexts. One may get the mistaken impression that “the Jews” is consistently a reference to all the Jewish people around Jesus in His historical life. What

is often meant by “the Jews” in the context of the arrest, torture and death of Jesus, are certain leaders of the Jewish people, e.g. some combination of lead priests, council

members, Pharisees or scribes. It is by no means a message of the four Gospels that a majority of Jesus’ own people (the Jews) were hostile to Him or wanted Him killed.
Our Catholic Church of recent history has been emphatic in teaching us respect for our “older siblings” in Biblical faith, the Jewish people. I do not need to list what

anti-Semitism (the bigoted, hostile prejudice towards Jewish people) has accomplished in atrocities over the past centuries. Our Lord Jesus forgave ALL people involved in

His physical death. The New Testament (the earliest church testimony) teaches that all of us in our sinfulness are the reason why He accepted a humiliating death, so that

all people of all time might be moved (lifted) to love as He loves. When we say ‘all of us’ we mean all people regardless of historical time, because the death of Jesus

occurred in time/space but is rooted in unlimited eternal significance.
Also, the Catholic Church has directly instructed us when we portray (in any art form) the last day of the earthly life of our Lord Jesus to take great care not to

exaggerate beyond the Biblical evidence the role of Jesus’ fellow Jews in His death (for obvious reasons!). Regarding this I mention Mel Gibson’s film ‘The Passion of the

Christ’. A few cautions regarding said film. It has some appropriately scary and beautiful moments, yet it extends the drama with speculative scenes. I’ve seen the movie

twice or more and the role of the Jewish leaders is arguably over cooked. So too, while Jesus did endure a bloody torturous death, He was not a real life reverse action film

hero (accepting a bath of violence to self instead of dishing it out). There is no Biblical or historically credible evidence that Jesus could or would superhumanly absorb the

torture portrayed (as though He was amazingly more able to withstand torture than another healthy male of the same age.) Historic Roman flagellation tails were not the

20-30 pound obscenities in the movie, which would break the spinal cord on the second blow. The movie is not Gospel, it’s Mel Gibson’s work, somewhat factual, also

somewhat misleading.
CONGRATULATIONS AND PRAYERS FOR OUR REGIONAL BISHOP EARL BOYEA. He starts as the new Bishop of the Lansing Diocese April 27th, just after

he’s here for Confirmations April 13th! It’s great he can be here with us, and a blessing of new adventure in the Lord for Bishop Boyea.
Always with prayer, Fr. Matt Ellis

A Note From The Principal

Why is a Catholic education important? This is a question that I hear a lot. There are many answers because it is important to each person for their own unique reasons.

For some people, it is a family tradition, for others, it is the characteristically smaller class sizes. In my opinion, the reason a Catholic education is important is because it

is the embodiment of our faith. A Catholic school provides an environment for Catholics and all Christians to express and truly LIVE their faith. When a child is having a bad

day, we can talk about it, looking at what we think Jesus would do. If a child or adult has a family tragedy, we can come together and pray, not just say “I’m sorry to hear

that” or “I’m sure it will all work out.”
At Holy Cross Catholic School, we provide an education for the WHOLE child. We offer a quality academic program supported by teachers who are willing to go the extra

mile to help each child reach his or her full potential. We offer athletics that allow all students to be a part of the team while learning the fundamentals of the various sports.

We offer additional activities for students who may not choose the athletic path, including Academic Olympics, Drama Club, and Children’s Choir. Most importantly, we

instill the values and faith in your children while they are with us. We believe that parents are the primary educators of their children, and are grateful to be able to be

PARTNERS in the education of our students.
Today is the Our Lady on the River Campus Open House. Both schools and our activity center will be open from 1:00-3:00 p.m. It is truly more than just Cardinal Mooney

Catholic College Preparatory High School and Holy Cross Catholic School. We are blessed in this parish to be able to provide a lifetime of Catholic education. Your

children have the potential for a complete Catholic education on the same familiar grounds. The young children are able to see the success of the older students as they

become middle schoolers. They are also able to witness faith-based education in action as many of our students travel “next door” to high school. I encourage you, if you

have ever even THOUGHT about a quality Catholic education for your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or neighbors, to come and visit Holy Cross Catholic School

and Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School. Teachers, parents, and principals will be on hand to answer your questions and tell you more about our school programs.
Do you think that a Catholic education is beyond your budget? There are numerous ways to reduce your tuition, including scholarships, grants, and the SCRIP program.

More information is available at today’s open house, or any time in the school office! Perhaps your children are grown, but you’d like to help others provide a Catholic

education for their children. This can be done at NO COST to YOU! Just take advantage of our SCRIP program and adopt a family today!
I hope to see you or someone you know this afternoon!
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Fifth Sunday of Lent
March 9, 2008
Our Lady on the River Parish

Words to Live By

To respond to God’s voice resounding in the depths of our conscience and to choose good is the most sublime use of human freedom. It is, in a real sense, to

make the choice between life and death.
-Pope John Paul II
Lent is the season that runs from Ash Wednesday until the start of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence and all Fridays

of Lent are days of abstinence.
The law of fasting binds people between 18 and 60 years of age and allows only one full meal a day but does not prohibit taking some food in the morning and

evening, drinking ordinary liquids does not break the fast.
The law of abstinence binds people 14 years and older and forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, the products of milk or condiments made of animal fat.

Permissible are soups flavored with meat, meat gravy and sauces.

“Jesus is Resurrection and Life”
Let us give praise and thanks!
On this fifth Sunday in Lent, we hope that the graces of this season will continue to renew our parish and our families in faith and love. We are all given gifts to help

us through this Lenten season (and all of life), including the gift of Scripture, which is near to us, on our lips and in our hearts, living and effective. St. Jerome said: “To ignore

Scripture is to ignore Christ.” “That is why it is important, Pope Benedict says, that every Christian live in contact and in personal dialogue with the word of God, given to us

in Sacred Scripture.”
The readings of this Sunday brings us once again Jesus, the compassion, presence, and life of God who heals and restores. Chapter 11 of John is the focus of our

journey into Holy Week and experiencing the Paschal Mystery. Everything is seen in light of Jesus who proclaims Who He is and what He is about: “I am the resurrection

and the life: whoever believes in Me, though he should die, will come to life and whoever is alive and believes in Me will never die.” This is the heart of our belief. There are so

many who doubt. Jesus asks Martha “Do you believe this?” Do we believe this? Do you believe that Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life? Let us pray these remaining

days of Lent that we may all come to live His life more fully in our own.
Next week we live the holiest week of our Church’s liturgical year. It is the week that reminds us that Easter is right around the corner, bringing our interior sight of

faith the reality of the Resurrection and the renewed presence of the Risen Lord Jesus in our midst.
Adult Lenten Renewal and Scripture
The final gathering of our weekly scripture sharing will take place on Wednesday, March 12th in St. Catherine Activity Center. The scripture sharing will begin at

6:45 p.m. This week, as we conclude the Lenten series, we invite all who come to enjoy a simple soup meal beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Activity Center, followed by

sharing of God’s word. Everyone is always welcome. Come for the first time or for the fifth time. Bring a friend.
Additional Thanks
Last week’s experience of the Marine City Ministerial Association Ecumenical Lenten Prayer Service is still very much present in good thought and thanksgiving.

When we meet together across denominations to pray in spirit and truth, and meet to serve the Lord together by working for and in our local and wider communities, we truly

come to know the spring within us that is indeed welling up to eternal life. Many thanks to Rev. Becky Lepley, Troy, Daniel, and all involved in the planning sessions. Our

own Holy Cross HandBell Choir provided a magnificent and inspiring prelude. Thank you, Diane and choir, and to Carol and the Interfaith choir as well. The soup meal

preceding the service was enjoyable, and we thank all for the delicious variety of homemade soups and breads. God bless you.
Trivia
The answer to last week’s question is: Isaiah 37 and II Kings 19. Two complete chapters nearly identical!
New Question: What two men in Bible history held a conference on the top of a building?

		Holy Cross	5:30 p.m.
		St. Catherine	7:00 p.m.

		Living Stations Good Friday
		Holy Cross	12:00 p.m.

Come and Experience the Love and Power Of Jesus!

The Stations of the Cross originated in medieval Europe when wars prevented pilgrims from reaching the Holy Land. Each of the 14 ‘stations’ commemorates a key event

as Jesus Christ accepted, then carried his cross on the way to his crucifixion at Calvary.
Join us at St Catherine Church on Friday, March 14th at 7:00 p.m. as Bill Richart, Catholic evangelist and musician, leads us on a journey alongside Jesus, using

music, preaching and artwork to bring alive the incredible sacrifice paid for us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Be transformed as we walk with Jesus on the way to his ultimate sacrifice of Love-Death on the Cross.

Living Stations of the Cross

Jesus showed His love for us by dying on the Cross for us. Now the young adults of our parish can share Jesus’ tribulations with their parish family by

participating in this year’s presentation of the Living Stations of the Cross on Good Friday.
Parishioners 13 years of age and older who would like to take part in this story of love are invited to contact Mrs. Kirsten Lents 810-794-0487 or Mrs. Catherine

Nutter 810-794-9493.

Please help us hold up our courageous men and women of the Armed Forces with prayer and recognition for the acts of protection they wholeheartedly and

selflessly continue to grace us with in our country. If you have family or close ones you would like to add to our prayer chain, please call any office of Our Lady on the River

or email us at bulletin@OurLadyontheRiver.net.

To Benefit Holy Cross School

The Galley Restaurant in Algonac has offered to donate profits from their Lenten cod dinners to Holy Cross School! The cost of dinner is $8.00; $1.25 of that will

be rebated to school.
This special will continue Wednesdays through Sundays, after 4:00 p.m. throughout Lent. The Galley is on Dyke Road, in front of Kroger; phone number

We will have a No-Bake Sale

You will not have to heat the kitchen
Nor turn on the oven yet.

There’s no chance of spilling goodies
In the car that you have got
And our waistline will not grow
With the calories we baked or bought

Just place the money you would spend
 on flour, sugar and spice
In an envelope marked No-Bake
And our treasury will find it very nice

We thank you for Not Baking
We thank you for your check
For the money will build our treasury
And Our Parish will benefit

This fundraiser is open to all

I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for participating at the “sewing bee” for ConKerr Cancer on Sunday, February 17. I was certainly

surprised to see such a large group when I arrived, considering the weather elements that afternoon. Your donation of time and effort with our pillowcase project is truly

appreciated. It is amazing how the simple gesture of giving a pillowcase makes a difference!
I look forward to continue work with you to further support ConKerr Cancer.
Sincerely,
Sue Ellen Kosmos

 Fever in Children

Fever is the body's defense mechanism against bacteria or viruses.  The body attempts to create extra heat so the foreign organism cannot survive.  The part of the

brain that controls body temperature is not fully developed in children.  If you take a child's temperature in the mouth or the ear, the normal temperature is 97.7-99.1 degrees-

F.  If your child has a fever, check with your doctor or pharmacist in regard to medications.  The dosage will depend on both the age and weight of your child.

CSA Minute
“From Tree to Cross: Bridging the Gap”

All those who minister throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit will gather at Sacred Heart Major Seminary this week for a renewal gathering at “From Tree to Cross:

Bridging the Gap.”
The day will feature a presentation by Megan McKenna, an internationally known author, lecturer, retreat leader, spiritual director and storyteller. She will examine

how the Word of God and our traditions take us from the Garden of Eden, with the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, to the tree of life and wood of the Cross and

everlasting life - to Resurrection..
Funded by your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal, “From Tree to Cross: Bridging the Gap” is co-sponsored by the Office for Pastoral Ministries, Office for

Family Ministry, Office for Faith Formation/Catechetic, Shared Ministry Association and Adult Faith Formation Association.

Q’s & A’s
Q - How is the date for Easter determined.?
A Since the Council of Nicaea in 325, the dating of Easter has been that it be celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. It is celebrated

on a Sunday on varying dates between March 22nd and April 25th.
