Pastor's Page
This week our Gospel passage tells us of the man born blind, whom Jesus heals with his own hands.
I am reminded of two things from this passage. The first thing is that jealousy can enter into the hearts of
even the best of intended people. Although one would think that there would be rejoicing of this healing,
some people in the community put a damper on the occasion by reminding everyone that Jesus healed
on the Sabbath and that is forbidden according to the Law. Jealousy enters in because Jesus was able
to provide a healing that no one else could do and as a result the Pharisees resort to name calling or
using the Law as their means to denounce Jesus’ actions. Jesus tells the Pharisees that he came to
judge those who are blind so that they can see the Light of Life and to humble those with sight because
they fail to recognize the Light of Christ.
The second thing that comes to my mind when I read this Gospel is the story of a young man
from Louisville who was recently on television with his family and they were receiving a new home
makeover. Like the man in the Gospel, this young man was born without sight. Which begs the same
question from our readings: “who sinned, the man or his parents?” The answer is the same: neither! The
disability is providential because Jesus wants people to believe in the healing of the soul. Although the
young man from Louisville did not receive the gift of sight, he did give healing to those who doubt in
human generosity. People from all walks of life gave of themselves to help a blind man receive a better
way of life so that his disability will not hinder him from living a dependent life. His story closed not with
cheers or parties, his story closed with songs of praise to our God who loves us all. Sometimes we need
that little reminder to appreciate what God has blessed us with in life, but also to remember that God will
humble us when we take things for granted.
THIS AND THAT: I would like to thank all the people who made our Fish Fry such a wonderful success.
The PTO and the Knights did a wonderful job and I appreciate their efforts. I would also like to thank the
owner of the Galley Restaurant for donating proceeds from his Lenten Cod dinners to benefit Holy Cross
Grade School. There are so many people in this community that want to give back to their parish family
which is a very humbling moment to experience in my priestly ministry. Finally, I would like to encourage
you to attend Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent. It is a very good devotion and another
reminder of what our Lord did for all of us.

A Note From The Principal
It is hard to believe that we are halfway through Lent. Time has truly been flying by. I find it hard to
have “enough” time. I am always wishing that I could have a few more minutes…of sleep, with the
children, with my family. Lent is a good time to realize that we don’t know how many “minutes” we have.
One way to use our time while growing in our faith is to extend the hand of forgiveness. We all make
mistakes – maybe they are on purpose, or perhaps accidental. Maybe they are because an experience
is new, or because we have just had “enough.” Our children are taught that if they make a mistake, they
need to apologize. What happens after the apology? We have to ask ourselves: “When someone has
made a mistake that affects me, do I accept his apology?” I hope that during this Lenten season, we will
all find true forgiveness in our hearts.
We have a very busy week ahead of ourselves at Holy Cross Catholic School! On Tuesday our
students will celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation. On Thursday, our second and third graders will
be traveling to Nino Salvaggio’s to learn more about the various foods we eat. Did you know that you can
buy SCRIP for Nino Salvaggio's? I find that it is a great way to give yourself a budget in that store!
This week we also share our knowledge with others through our annual science fair! Students have
been diligently working on science projects, some for many weeks. It will be wonderful to see the fruits
of their labors. Many thanks to Mrs. Wade and Miss Robinson for all that they do to make our science
fair a success. Everyone is welcome to visit our science fair during the open house. In conjunction with
the science fair and open house, we will also be having our Scholastic Book Fair. The book fair is set up
in the hallway of the activity center. The book fair will be open after the weekend Masses. Many thanks
to Mrs. Sharon Rivard for organizing this event.
There really seems to be a lot going on during the coming weekend. I hope that you will find the time
on Saturday, March 8, to join us at the Marine City K of C for our Irish Dinner Auction. Please check out
the ad in the bulletin for more information! If you don’t have your tickets yet, please call the school office
at 810-765-3591 by Wednesday so we can guarantee your seats!
On Sunday, March 9, Holy Cross and Cardinal Mooney will be having a joint open house. Please
encourage someone you know to visit our campus between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. We are blessed to have
a Catholic campus where we can educate the WHOLE child. I hope you will take advantage of the
science fair and the book fair while you are here as well.
In sporting news, our girls’ volleyball season is well underway. I hope that you will take the time to
watch our girls play! Our games are away this week, but will be back on the home court next week!
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund

Fourth Sunday of Lent
March 2, 2008
Our Lady on the River Parish
Words to Live By
Jesus’ victory over the evil one assures us that we will not succumb at the moment of trial as
long as we remain united to the Lord. In this perspective, Lent invites us to make a special commitment
to the process of spiritual growth. -Pope John Paul
Lent is the season that runs from Ash Wednesday until the start of the Mass of the Lord’s
Supper. Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence and all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.
The law of fasting binds people between 18 and 60 years of age and allows only one full meal a
day but does not prohibit taking some food in the morning and evening, drinking ordinary liquids does
not break the fast.
The law of abstinence binds people 14 years and older and forbids the use of meat, but not of
eggs, the products of milk or condiments made of animal fat. Permissible are soups flavored with meat,
meat gravy and sauces.
Lenten Observances
Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the
poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home.
When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are in effect, ringing your doorbell.
Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the SVdP so that together we
can help the suffering and poor. Through your donations, together we can help the poor of our parish and
community.

Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
“Come, let us go to the Lord, our God, with rejoicing!”
Today marks the halfway point between Ash Wednesday and Easter! With the 4th Sunday, we
begin the second part of Lent. This Sunday was called “Laetare Sunday”, meaning “rejoice”, in the Latin
Liturgy. Last Sunday’s liturgical theme centered around Jesus being ‘the Living Water’ which is offered to
everyone to satisfy the human thirst for meaning and ultimate completion. This weekend’s theme focuses
on Jesus, again as “Healing, Living Water” with the image of the pool of Siloam. The Gospel has a clear
relation to Baptism. Our scriptures remind us that Jesus washes clean in the waters of life all who
approach the stream of living water seeking life, healing and peace. We all need to see Jesus and the
Gospel more clearly. As we continue this Lent to live in the ‘light of the Gospel’, our lives hopefully will
take on a transparency wherein there is no darkness, enabling each of us to relate with other people in
“complete goodness and right living and truth.”
RCIA - Second Scrutiny
What is a scrutiny? A very special rite celebrated on the last three Sundays of Lent. It is an
occasion (actually three) that provides the presence and prayer of the assembly to support and accept
those preparing for Easter sacraments through a prayer ritual during the Liturgy. As they approach the
day when they will receive the sacraments of initiation, the elect and candidates come before us in
humility to give witness to the inner grace that is taking place in their lives. Please pray for them. The
2nd scrutiny today takes place at St. Catherine. The 3rd scrutiny will take place next Sunday at St.
Mark, as the 1st scrutiny was celebrated last weekend at Holy Cross.
Parish Adult Scripture Session
This coming Wednesday, March 5th, all are invited to join a grand group of men and women
gathering to reflect upon and learn from the Lenten Scriptures. The session begins at 6:45 p.m. in St.
Catherine Activity Center. Come alone or bring a friend or two, even if it is your first time. No prior
experience is needed and there is no cost. Hope to see you Wednesday.
Thank You
Many thanks to all who participated in the Marine City Ministerial Association Ecumenical
Prayer Service and Soup Supper last Wednesday. We thank Daniel Susan and choir who as always,
provided inspirational meditative music to enhance our time in God’s Presence. Thanks to Jenny Street
and the ladies of the Holy Cross Altar Society who provided delicious soups and warm hospitality prior to
the Prayer Service. God bless one and all. It is good to be here.
Trivia
Once again our faithful few made the discovery of the “Salesians” as the order founded by St.
John Bosco. Well done, Mary Minnich, Mary Prevost, John & Joanne Vance, Elmer D’Ambrosio,
Rosetta Babish, and Spencer & Mary Margaret Adkins.
New Question…What two chapters in the Bible (Old Testament), though not entirely alike, have very little
difference between them?
Let us thank the Lord and rejoice in Him, as we renew our effort to live Lent well.
With prayer, love and support,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

World Day of Prayer March 7, 2008
God’s Wisdom Provides New Understanding
World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come
together to observe a common day of prayer each year. Throughout the entire day, we collectively pray
all over the world, beginning with the first sunrise and ending at the last sunset. Our prayers follow the
sun's path around the globe. WDP's motto is "Informed prayer leads to prayerful action." Through WDP,
women affirm that prayer and action are inseparable and that both have influence in the world. Celebrated
@ St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Marine City @ 12:00 p.m. Light refreshments following.
Sharing the Gospel
When Jesus saw the blind man, he did not just walk by. Jesus stopped. He knew he could
help the man, and honor God at the same time. Showing all of God's love and power, Jesus healed the
blind man's eyes. For the first time in his life, the man could see Jesus and believe in him.
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for helping the blind man believe in you.
Something to Draw
With your eyes closed, try to draw a picture of Jesus.
Mission for the Week
Draw a cross and put it in a place where you can see it and think of Jesus every day.

Holy Cross Liturgies Now Heard Online
World-wide outreach on the World Wide Web
Recordings of a weekend Holy Mass and other occasional liturgies from Holy Cross Church can now be
heard through our web site, www.holycrossonline.net. The homebound as well as others anywhere in the
world can now listen to our most recent services, usually available online early Sunday afternoon.
Listening to Mass is not a substitute for gathering in person to hear the Word, and share the Body and
Blood of Christ. In some circumstances, however, hearing the liturgy may be a better option than
skipping it entirely. For those who have Holy Communion brought to them where they live, or for anyone
who simply wants to hear a homily or the weekly announcements repeated, the internet offers a
convenient way to stay in touch with the Church community at prayer. If there is interest and support, we
may offer these same recordings on CDs, although there is added expense to providing those each
week. Please consider a gift to support the ministry of the Church through audio recordings.
We are already working to make these sound files easier to access; please be patient. It is only
practical for those with high-speed connections to retrieve them and it takes a few minutes for the
download. We hope to improve this as we are able. Dial-up service can theoretically work, but the
download time is too long to be practical. There are also other recordings from Holy Cross posted online
which are available for listening, and these are presently located on the Music Ministries page. Soon we
will gather them into one place for easy browsing.
Pope Benedict has reminded us that the Eucharist is the "source and summit" of our faith. Now we have
an opportunity to bring our weekly celebration to others near and far. Sharing our liturgy on the internet is
not a vain display of technology, but an opportunity for potent outreach in the 21st century.
~Daniel John Susan,
Director of Music Ministries, Holy Cross Church

Come and Experience the Love
and Power Of Jesus!
The Stations of the Cross originated in medieval Europe when wars prevented pilgrims from reaching
the Holy Land. Each of the 14 ‘stations’ commemorates a key event as Jesus Christ accepted, then
carried his cross on the way to his crucifixion at Calvary.
Join us at St Catherine Church on Friday, March 14th at 7:00 p.m. as Bill Richart, Catholic
evangelist and musician, leads us on a journey alongside Jesus, using music, preaching and artwork to
bring alive the incredible sacrifice paid for us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Be transformed as we walk with Jesus on the way to his ultimate sacrifice of Love-Death on the
Cross.
Living Stations of the Cross
Jesus showed His love for us by dying on the Cross for us. Now the young adults of our parish
can share Jesus’ tribulations with their parish family by participating in this year’s presentation of the
Living Stations of the Cross on Good Friday.
Parishioners 13 years of age and older who would like to take part in this story of love are
invited to contact Mrs. Kirsten Lents 810-794-0487 or Mrs. Catherine Nutter 810-794-9493.
