On Ash Wednesday I made a trip up to Camp Wolverine to celebrate Mass with our Holy Cross grade school students. During my travel I was able to reflect on the meaning
of Lent for me this year and how it is similar to the road trip up north. In the beginning, I had to set up a travel plan and mark off places to stop and rest and refuel. Much like
our Lenten journey, we have to mark off where we are going to hear the Word of God, celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation, and receive the Eucharist. Even during a
spiritual journey we have to rest and refuel so that we will have the endurance to finish the journey.
However, even with the best of maps in front of us, we sometimes have to make adjustments along the way. We may not have taken into consideration bad
weather, road work or just slower drivers. All three are examples of obstacles that we can encounter during a journey to meet the risen Christ. Bad weather can sometimes
force us into making a decision to return where it is safer. We are afraid to venture out because we might be feeling too anxious. Fear not, because our Lord has continually
told us that we are not to be afraid! Put our trust in Him and we can handle the storms of life. But, we are also warned that there might be some bumps along the way.
Potholes cause our cars to shake; potholes in our prayer life can be just as difficult. Potholes represent those things that try to turn our focus away from Jesus. We must
avoid the potholes of course, but we must learn to how to recover from them when we hit them. Finally, the slow drivers on the road are not a bad thing, rather, it is another
reminder from God that maybe we need to slow down and appreciate the journey of life. Driving or praying at a fast pace leads us away from enjoying the beauty and
inspirations surrounding us. Slowing down in the car reminds us to appreciate the journey, while slowing down in prayer enables us to hear and listen to what our God has
for us to do for Him and for all. Maybe most important, through patience and perseverance we will make it to our final destination which is the Resurrected Christ.
I hope this Lenten reflection helps because sometimes the journey seems like a lonely one but have faith because Jesus is with us and watching us at all times
through the intercessions of all His children. May we continue to pray and support one another until the day we can all share in the Resurrected Christ.
All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim
P.S. Congratulations to the Lady Cardinals of Cardinal Mooney High School! They won the Catholic League Championship in basketball with a great victory over
Our Lady of the Lakes down at the University of Detroit-Mercy campus last Sunday. They won with dignity and class which put a smile on my face. Thank you ladies and
good luck during the state tournament!

A Note From The Principal
Another reason that I enjoy Lent is that it is a time of waiting. Patience is something that is not always easy, and this is the season that I actively work on being patient.
One thing that we must wait for is the return of the Alleluia to our liturgy. We have put it away for the season. Each day, it gets moved to a new location in the building. It is
wrapped in gold paper and a simple ribbon. I believe it is important that we remember to look for the good in all that we do…looking for this package is a simple reminder of
the wonderful gift Christ gave us through His death and resurrection.
It is hard to believe that the school year is already half over! It is now time to begin planning for next year. What are your plans for the coming school year? Now is a
great time to start planning your children’s Holy Cross education! There are many ways to make a Holy Cross education. PSAS forms are available in the parish offices,
the school office, and the religious education office. Applying for PSAS is easy, inexpensive, and opens up numerous financial aid opportunities. Please consider taking
advantage of this program today. Forms must be mailed by April 1.
Would you like an even easier way to reduce your tuition? Taking advantage of the SCRIP program is a FREE way to make your everyday purchases truly work for you!
Have you tried SCRIP? It is truly an easy process that makes life much easier. This is also something that your family and friends can take part in without you having to
“sell” them some candy, magazines, fruit, or other items that they may or may not need! We all need gas and groceries! Wouldn’t it be great to have the money for an
“emergency pizza” tucked away for that busy evening dinner? I would be happy to show you how it works. Call the school or parish office to get started today! Did you know
that you can visit the Holy Cross OR St. Catherine’s offices to get your SCRIP? Please check it out today!
Do you have a three or four-year-old who is ready to begin preschool in the fall? How about a kindergartener? We are now accepting applications for our preschool and
kindergarten programs for the 2008-2009 school year! Please call the school office at 810-765-3591 to add your son or daughter to our list. Registration will begin in April.
Not sure if you’re ready for your little one to start school? Take advantage of our open house on Sunday, March 9 from 1:00-3:00. You will have the opportunity to speak with
Mrs. Carolyn Krum (Ms. Carolyn) our preschool teacher and Ms. Rachel Ward, our kindergarten teacher, regarding our programs. While you are visiting, please take the
opportunity to explore the other programs available on Our Lady on the River’s Catholic Campus!
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who made our Catholic Schools Week celebration a success! We have a lot to be proud of. Thank you to our teacher planning
committee and all of our teachers for their patience. Thank you also to Mrs. Martha Kessel for sharing “The Light of the World” with our students. May that light continue to
shine in our hearts today and always.
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Words to Live By
God has given us a moral law to guide us and protect us from falling back into the slavery of sin and falsehood. We are not alone with our responsibility for the
great gift of freedom. The Ten Commandments are the charter of true freedom for individuals as well as for society as a whole. -Pope John Paul II

The law of fasting binds people between 18 and 60 years of age and allows only one full meal a day but does not prohibit taking some food in the morning and
evening, drinking ordinary liquids does not break the fast.
The law of abstinence binds people 14 years and older and forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, the products of milk or condiments made of animal fat.

Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within
walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are in effect, ringing your doorbell.
Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the SVdP so that together we can help the suffering and poor. Through your donations, together we
can help the poor of our parish and community.
Sharing the Gospel
Peter, James, and John had walked up the mountain with Jesus. When they got to the top, Jesus looked different. Rays of bright light came from his face. His
robes became white. Then a voice from a cloud said, "This is my Son whom I love. In him I am well pleased. Listen to him." The three apostles were scared and fell on the
ground and
covered their heads with their arms. Then Jesus touched them and said, "Don't be afraid."
Prayer
Lord, help me when I am afraid.
Something to Draw
Draw Peter, James, and John looking at Jesus shining with rays of light.
Mission for the Week
When I am afraid, I will remember that God is always with me.

work!!! God Bless all of you, Joyce Anderson, Kathy Johnson, Rhonny Moore and Michael Anderson.
Hope & Perseverance
I know things are very hard and difficult right now. Both money and finance are hard to come by; people are out of work, losing their houses. It takes a lot of
strength and courage to keep looking forward. To...never give up. You may lose your house but never your home or family. You may be down to your last log in the fire or
your last can of beans on the table, but you can survive it all! Your parent’s had you for a reason. You were made for God’s will and glory and each of us has a place in his
works. I know, because I was there. There was a time I felt alone, but when I can offer my strength and help to others, it is all the wealth I need. Wealth isn’t only in your
wallet, it is in your HEART of Giving and Thanksgiving.
A Gift Of Hope...God Loves You!

Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
His love endures forever!"
The Church invites us to move forward on a journey leading to Easter, transforming our hearts and minds to rediscover what faith in God is all about.
As the days of Lent grow in number, a thought of St. John of the Cross - comes to mind: “Though the path is plain and smooth for the person of good will, those
who walk it will not travel far, and will do so only with difficulty if they do not have good feet, courage, and tenacity of spirit.” It’s a long distance trip. Perhaps on this 12th day
of Lent, it’s already feeling too difficult, too demanding!
Today we’re encouraged to look at God’s powerful call to Abraham, who is possibly the Bible’s first extreme traveler. He chose to follow God’s lead and accept
God’s itinerary, “not knowing where he was going,” risking the unknown, making a new home within the promises of God.
For us, following God’s lead may indeed bring us to a new point on the map! It will likely lead us to shift more in relationship with God, moving toward new
understanding and growth, changing our hearts and minds toward God’s direction.
In the Gospel today, Jesus takes his closest disciples and goes up a mountain to pray. It must not always have been encouraging for the disciples traveling with
Jesus to constantly experience the mounting hostility, criticism and negative attitudes. No doubt some felt that following Jesus to Jerusalem became a real challenge. They
really needed to climb that mountain and experience a prayerful transformation. Their mystical experience with Jesus was very moving. It was good for them to be there. The
calm, beauty, peace and reassurance was a change of pace from what they met in their daily ministry. They needed a ray of hope. Sometimes we tend to forget that hope is
one of the cardinal virtues. James Miller, in “Finding Hope”, defines it this way: “Hope is looking forward with confidence and unsureness to something good.” We can expect
to find hope where we least expect it.
During this graced time, if we take time, go apart for prayer, keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, open our hearts to Him, and listen to Him, deepened faith, hopeful
confidence, and the kindness of Jesus will come to us. We all need moments of ‘transfiguration’, and God is waiting for us to tune in to His Presence. In every circumstance
of life, we learn how God’s love is working in and through Jesus. Following Jesus this Lent entails reflecting on our experience of His Presence, articulating that experience,
and listening to it. Life at the center is a personal love union with Jesus. In Jesus, we meet the Father, and are given the Gifts of the Spirit to share with others in the service
of the Gospel. This was a lesson Peter, James and John were asked to begin learning on that day of Transfiguration. It was a lesson they would, and we will, learn in time.
Faith is a continuous, committed response to God’s initiative, bring a new perspective on the world, on life, on our part in the promise. None of us knows exactly
where we will be going tomorrow. The challenge is to walk by faith, trusting God to be with us in every experience. Be open to surprises. God, who is capable of surprises,
will not let us down. Our loving God is with us on this Lenten journey.
In Jesus’ peace, with love and prayer,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

World Marriage Day
Today we celebrate “World Marriage Day”, an annual tradition sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter. The theme is: “Love One Another!” It is time to honor
husbands and wives, and thank God for the tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. On this 2nd Sunday of Lent, we reflect on our journey of faith with one another to
build up the kingdom of God in our midst. We always begin our journey of faith in our families. Loving one another is a daily decision - simple, but challenging. On the day of
marriage, God gives the grace and blessings needed to meet the situations that arise in life. Marriage is a wonderful calling. Today we honor and celebrate the Sacrament
that unites a man and a woman who try to live God’s plan to be instruments of love and peace. May God Bless all married couples and may their love be a sign of the love of
Jesus.

Operation Rice Bowl 2008
During Lent many Catholics are thinking about ways to fast, what meals to cook on Lent Fridays, and how to spend the season in solidarity with people living in
poverty. To find a comprehensive Lenten experience, they are turning to Operation Rice Bowl, Catholic Relief Services 33-year-old Lenten program that supports hunger
projects throughout the world.
Every year, ORB features stories from five different countries to illustrate the effects of poverty. An accompanying ORB calendar and interactive Web site can be
used as a Lenten guide, offering prayers, activities and authentic meatless recipes from Guatemala, Mali, India, Haiti and Cameroon. Preparing these dishes together allows
families to observe Lent and experience a simple meal while learning about places where people live on less than $2 a day? and where meat is often considered a luxury.
In addition, people can donate the money they would have spent on a big meal to support CRS food security projects in more than 40 countries, including the
United States. Catholic Relief Services raises $8 million through Operation Rice Bowl every year. Seventy-five percent of the money is used to fund food security projects
overseas, the other 25 percent stay in local dioceses.
Rice Bowls are available at the church exits, for your Lenten Almsgiving. Please take one home today and help those living in poverty. Or you may become part
of the Operation Rice Bowl Online Community and receive weekly email reflections to help focus your Lenten experience through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
