Sharing the Gospel
A man came up to Jesus with sores all over his body. He wore a hood over his head and a robe with long sleeves to hide his sores. He said, "If you want to, you can heal me." Jesus touched him and said, "I do want to. Now your sores are gone." Jesus said, "Do not tell anyone about your healing." The man was too excited to keep a secret. He told everyone he met.
Prayer
Lord, please heal me when I am sick.
Mission for the Week
I will tell everyone about the good things God has
done for me.

FR. MATT’S MATTERS
SOME TASKS AND RIGHTS OF THE FAMILY
Our Church has a long and unique tradition of teaching guided by the Holy Spirit on individual and social values rooted in what’s called ‘Christian anthropology’. The human person can be defined in Christian terms and so too the family. I’ll finish this paragraph with some of what Pope John Paul II wrote in 1981 from the document “On the Family”: “The situation of the family today presents positive and negative aspects: the first is a sign of the salvation of Christ operating in the world; the second is a sign of the refusal that humanity gives to the love of God. There is more attention toward the quality of the interpersonal relationships in marriage, toward promoting the dignity of women, to reciprocal assistance, and the family’s Christian mission in building a better society. On the other hand, signs are not lacking of a disturbing degradation of some fundamental values. At the root of the negative phenomena there frequently lies a corruption of the idea and experience of freedom, conceived not as a capacity for realizing the truth of God’s plan for marriage and family, but as an autonomous power of self-affirmation, often against others, for one’s own selfish well-being… The historical situation in which the family now lives appears as an interplay of light and darkness. This shows that history is not simply a fixed progression toward what is better, but rather an event of freedom, and even a struggle between freedoms that are in mutual conflict, that is, according to the expression of St. Augustine, a conflict between two loves: the love of God to the point of disregarding self, and the love of self to the point of disregarding God”.
The Catholic Church sees four general tasks for the family: forming a community of persons; serving life; participation in the development of society; and sharing in the life and mission of the church. We live now in the wake of many years, wherein freedom from or liberation from either real or imagined constraints (laws, pressures, shunning, etc.) has mirrored back to many societies on the planet what the many would do when they’re not highly regulated by what had been ‘traditionally right’. A society where the people are not coerced to choose good or to choose evil, that is, being left to our own choices regarding certain issues, is a good thing. It’s also a test, a measuring stick, it evaluates us and makes us even more personally responsible as we freely choose what seems morally right or we freely choose what may be morally wrong. The goal is to do what is right for the right reasons and to avoid committing the evil for the right reasons. What is each of us doing with our freedom in relationship to our families, work, social life and community involvement? Often society pressures us in the wrong direction, are we close enough to Christ to be capable of accurately interpreting the ‘signs of the times’ in our lives?
God’s blessings to you,
Fr. Matt Ellis

R.C.I.A.
This week begins the introduction of the RCIA participants to the parish.
My name is Linda Abraam. I’m a recent widow who spends a good deal of my days mourning the loss of my husband, Robert. I also spend much time praying for Robert that God may welcome him into His Kingdom. I truly believe that one day Robert and I will be reunited if I continue to pray and live my life in God’s grace and light.
I came to the RCIA seeking the answer as to why my husband Robert was able to pass from this world to the next with such peace and acceptance because he believed in the Lord and the promise of eternal life. Since then I have had an overwhelming need to be a part of that kind of unwavering faith which Robert had in the Catholic Church and all it stands for.
I think a turning point in my journey was the day I read the prayer from The Confessions of St. Augustine: “You were with me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. You called, .and you broke through my deafness. …You shone and dispelled my blindness…now I hunger and thirst for more.” Something that brings me hope, joy and peace at this stage of my journey is believing that through prayer and God’s grace, all things are possible.
One of the biggest changes in my life since coming to the RCIA is my need to grow in knowledge of the Church’s beliefs. God has put people in my path who are helping me. I am blessed with the support of prayer and the sharing of my sponsor, Carol Sadecki and Fr. Lopez, Sr. Mary Ann and Sr. Geraldine. My desire to be in good relationship with God has deepened. Prayer has a whole new meaning for me. I turn every problem, sorrow, joy and all aspects of my life over to God in prayer. Through Him all things are possible. I have faith that all things will work out according to God’s plan, not my own. I now understand that I need Jesus in my life to live a meaningful, hopeful, joyful life in love, charity and prayer.
Please pray for Linda and welcome her as she prepares to make a profession of faith in the Catholic Church and receive the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter vigil.

A Note From The Principal
It’s good to be home! Our annual trip to camp provided a wealth of outdoor educational experiences for our students. We can now build upon our experiences from camp as we continue our school year.
This week, our National Junior Honor Society officers attended the Catholic Schools Week Mass which was celebrated by Archbishop Vigneron. This Mass is a wonderful experience as it brings so many of our schools together in the celebration of the liturgy.
This weekend we are enjoying our mid-winter break. Our students will return to school on Wednesday, February 18th. After this break, we will be well on our way to Lent. Our students will come together for the Ash Wednesday Mass on February 25th at 7:45 a.m.
We are also making plans for our annual open house. The Holy Cross Learning Fair will run in conjunction with the joint Holy Cross/Cardinal Mooney Open House on Sunday, March 8th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. We hope that you will come out and see our students’ work and learn more about the educational opportunities that await your family at Holy Cross.
It is never too early to start planning for a Holy Cross Catholic education. Have you been giving some thought to joining our school family? Right now is the perfect time to start preparing by applying for financial aide through the PSAS program. This grant program provides grants to students in grades 1-12 attending Catholic elementary or high schools. It is a time-sensitive program, as applications must be returned at the beginning of April. If you would like more information about this program, please contact the school or parish office. We would be happy to give you the paperwork.
Another way to reduce your tuition is by using SCRIP. Some people may not understand how SCRIP works. As always, our dedicated SCRIP volunteers are always willing and able to personally explain the program. Sometimes, seeing SCRIP in action is even better. Please stop into the school lobby to see the new SCRIP display, which highlights what using SCRIP for your basic everyday purchases can do for you!
In His Service,

Presidents Day Blessing
Dear God,
we ask today for your blessing on our president.
Enlighten his mind,
so that he makes wise decisions
that affect us and the world.
Enkindle in his soul a thirst for justice,
not only based upon a party platform,
but upon the eternal truths you have revealed to us.
Inspire him to look upon the most vulnerable of us,
and treat the unborn, the poor,
and those seen as worthless,
as deserving every right and dignity
given to men and women created in your image.
Amen.

Pope Benedict XVI on YouTube
Mark Sweney covered the story of the newly launched site in the January 23 Guardian: “The new channel, unveiled today at the press room of the Holy See, aims to ‘help establish relationships with Catholics from around the world’ by broadcasting short video news clips on the Pope’s activities and events at the Vatican.”
“In a press statement, the Catholic church said that despite its ‘ancient roots’ it remained ‘convinced of its ability to express words that are still important and relevant in today’s world, using language and communications technologies of today’s world’”.

Bible Study To Be Offered
We would like to offer to all parishioners of Our Lady on the River Parish a weekly Bible Study, which would be facilitated by Deacon Gary Krueger.
To help us schedule the Bible Study, we would like to evaluate the interest. Please complete this form and return to the office or call if you would be interested.

KRUEGER’S KORNER
I am pleased to be back “in harness” here at Holy Cross (Our Lady on the River Parish). So the very first thing I want to mention is the Bible Study Class I have been asked to moderate.
“Pathways Through Scripture”
Proposed beginning date: Thursday February 26th, (first Thursday of the Lenten Season). The meeting times being considered are: 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and/or 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. I would be willing to offer both times if there is a need.
We will begin with the Old Testament and review things like The Pentatuch (the first 5 books of the OT). The major prophets and minor prophets…as a basis for the understanding of the Incarnation.
We will look at the Gospels and other New Testament writings most particularly St. Paul.
This will be a hands on study class and interaction between participants would be really a great thing. I hope to make the experience enjoyable as well as instructive. Come join me and put in your 2 cents worth…ask questions, give opinions, share understandings.
I think I can speak for Deacon Bob as well as myself when I say that we are excited about helping out when and where we can. We want to thank Fr. Jim and Fr. Matt for being receptive and enthusiastic to our offer of assistance. Deacon Bob and I will keep our eyes open for opportunities in Our Lady on the River Parish.
Michigan Catholic Conference
Advocacy Priorities
2009-2010
Recognizing the tremendous budget difficulties that lie ahead, Michigan Catholic Conference announced that protecting statewide programs that benefit Michigan’s poor will top it’s advocacy efforts during the 95th legislative session. The Conference will also lend its support to any legislation that limits and regulates the destruction of human embryos following the passage of Proposal 2 in November.
Michigan’s significant budget deficit in the coming fiscal year presents a major obstacle to protecting critical programs, but it is the mission of MCC to protect the dignity and life of each and every human person from conception until natural death, especially the most vulnerable.
“God is our shelter and our shield,
Come, let us give thanks and praise!”
Have you been healed in any way? Today’s reading from St. Mark gives us an opportunity to think about a turning-point moment when Jesus touched a person with leprosy and everything in that person’s life changed. The person was made whole and enabled to join the mainstream again. The fellow went from sickness to health, from brokenness to wholeness. A conversion of a sort took place. The Scripture doesn’t say that he experienced conversion in the religious sense of the word, but he proclaimed his healing freely and spread the word about Jesus, even contrary to Jesus’ request. In the Bible, the Hebrew word for conversion (shub), means “to turn” or “to return”, and the Greek word (metanoia), means “to turn around’. The person Jesus healed in today’s Gospel clearly made ‘a return’. He could go back to his family and community. There was a turning around from being an outcast.
In The Dictionary of Bible and Religion, “To be converted means to have the direction of one’s life shifted, so that it no longer points toward self, but points toward God.” That’s exactly what happened to man with leprosy. He stepped off the ‘woe is me’ path and onto the ‘Jesus is great’ road. It’s a conversion story to be sure. While many of us might not have a faith-conversion story to tell, we all do have a story about the gift and grace-filled content of our faith that we can share, proclaim freely, and spread the good word! When we gratefully tell of our faith in God, we invite others to see the action and goodness of God in their lives as well.
Have you been healed in any way? Can you help heal those in need around you? Jesus always chooses to help people, and He is always present to bring good into our lives.
Trivia for the new year….
Coming soon….a new version of Bible Trivia! Recently someone gifted me with a calendar of ‘brain-quest-brain-teasers”…I’m working on turning that around to “faith-quest-awareness gems”. Look for it in a couple weeks. Until then, enjoy this:
A man goes into a drugstore and asks the pharmacist if he can give him something for the hiccups.
The pharmacist promptly reaches out and slaps the man’s face.
“What did you do that for?!”, the man exclaims.
“Well, you don’t have the hiccups anymore, do you?”, answers the pharmacist.
“No,” the man says, “but my wife out in the car still does!”
Have a great week ahead.
In God’s peace and love,
