Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
His love endures forever!"
We are at the start of Lent, the time of the year when the Church invites us to test our freedom and our faithfulness. May these six weeks before Easter help us to
make a sacred space to focus our energy not on ourselves, but on Jesus. Let us truly "turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel." Lent is a privileged time to turn
toward Jesus and ask for a renewed experience of His Presence. Philippians 3:10 is a powerful mantra for this holy season:
"All I want is to know Jesus Christ and the power of His resurrection!"
This surely could be a growing desire in the hearts of RCIA catechumens and candidates for full communion as they prepare to take part in the Rite of Election at
Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in hopeful expectation of celebrating the sacraments of initiation during the Easter solemnities.
During Lent we are also invited to participate in Operation Rice Bowl in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services. This annual tradition calls us to: Pray - that we
may grow in solidarity with our brothers and sisters as members of one human family. Fast - as a form of self-discipline and to foster solidarity with those who hunger for
justice and physical nourishment. Give - to assist the most vulnerable members of our human family throughout the world. A combined generous effort can make a real
difference in the lives of the poor around the world and in our own communities.
Adult Lenten Scripture Sharing
The first gathering for Lenten renewal through the scriptures of Lent will be this coming Wednesday, Feb. 13th beginning at 6:45 p.m. in St. Catherine’s Activity
Center. Everyone is welcome. There is no fee. There is no previous experience with the Bible required. The power of Scripture lies not in the words on a page. The power
resides in the work of God’s Spirit in the person for whom the written word becomes a living, breathing reality.
J. D. Salinger once wrote: “All we do our whole lives is go from one little piece of holy ground to the next”. Scripture is the sacred space, the holy ground, on which we walk,
the divine air we breathe, the lamp that lights our way.
May this Lent, 2008, be the 40 days when we might reflect on making room for the most important things in life, as we once again make a sincere effort “to turn
away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel!”
Trivia kudos to: Mary Lorkowski, John & Joann Vance & Spencer & Mary M. Adkins on success in the Proverbs of Solomon 16:18!
New question: Who was the famous roommate of St. Francis Xavier? He founded the Jesuit order!
Peace, love and supportive prayer,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

Fr. Matt’s Matters
The Spirit of Lent - How well it is captured in the Bible readings of Ash Wednesday and the First Sunday of Lent. The prophet Joel conveys God’s word to the
Hebrew people: “Tear open your hearts…and return to the Lord your God.” Or put another way, let your hearts be broken. In this world of physical violence, of hurting, hateful
and angry people perpetuating cycles of revenge, someone must practice the opposite, something spiritually and psychologically ‘violent’: a heart undergoing radical
change.
Under what force? The Spirit of Jesus, who let His Heart figuratively and literally bleed wide open for us all. Some may not like this wording, but Jesus Christ is,
Himself, the real and best ‘bleeding heart’, (for the pious, look to His Sacred Heart). The ‘heart change’ we need is continuing conversion, changing our thinking and
attitudes. The only legitimate violence is to follow the austerities of Christ to which we are invited. We are to practice Lent by letting the Holy Spirit kill in our hearts the
outbursts of pride, greed, conceit, arrogance, racism, envy, lustfulness and the power/control obsessions we may have in our relationships to others. Let us allow these
destructive realities to be killed, for that is the violence which must be done, so that out of it new humans may arise, the only ones who can build a new civilization: a
civilization of God’s LOVE. For this we have a way, and it is an “inside job.”
Jesus Himself “was led into the desert by the Spirit,” praying, fasting and being tempted to abuse His power. Yet He came back in the Holy Spirit teaching,
healing, serving. We even more so need to pray, and as Jesus says in Matthew’s gospel chap. 6, used on Ash Wednesday: “Be on guard against performing religious acts
for other people to see…When you are praying, do not behave like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in public, on street corners, in order to be noticed.” As Jesus
was a man of private prayer, so too he worshipped with His fellow Jews, as we read in Luke’s gospel, 4:16, “Jesus came to Nazareth…and entering the synagogue on the
Sabbath AS HE WAS IN THE HABIT OF DOING,” (emphasis added by me!) Through Jesus’ example, private prayer and prayer together are our duty, joy and opportunity to
interact with the Living God! Most important is taking the time to pray and worship and the attitude we bring to it. An idea for Lenten conversing with God, who in Jesus has
lifted us to the status of friends who communicate, is thus: I open my deepest self to You, O Lord, work your wonderful changes in me that I may be healed, strengthened
and become yet more a dwelling place of You. Thank you for all your blessings, now and yet to come, amen.
A great chance to get together during Lent will be February 15 at the fish fry dinner held at the Knights of Columbus, Marine City. So too, sacrifice a bit of your
time and resources to help a chosen source of need, charitable love lives on into eternity, we take it with us as we look to meet its Source, our Eternal God. Please pray for
me and Fr. Jim.
Your Associate Pastor,
Fr. Matt Ellis

A Note From The Principal
Lent is one of my favorite liturgical seasons. I know that this statement may sound odd. Why not Christmas? I find Lent to be a season in which one really sees the
significance of the many sacrifices made on his or her behalf. The most important sacrifice-Jesus giving His life on the cross for our salvation. Lent provides us with
numerous opportunities to better ourselves. We often “give up” something during this season-perhaps a favorite food or television program. We give up meat each Friday,
and we do more to help those less fortunate than ourselves. While I think that giving up something important is an excellent way to recognize the many sacrifices that have
been made on our behalf, I think that pledging to “do” something is also important. For instance, one might pledge to pray more, be more helpful around the house, or give of
his or her time and talents more freely. I think it is a good opportunity to look beyond the hurts that we have been dealt by others, and find a way to forgive.
I see a number of apologies each day. Children will always apologize when they are prompted, especially if they must do so in order to return to class or recess. Rather
than a forced apology, a genuine apology is a wonderful gift. Apologies don’t always have to be words-they can be actions. It is truly up to us to accept the apologies of
others and truly forgive. I pray that each of us will truly forgive someone who has hurt us during this Lenten season.
Congratulations go out to our boys’ varsity team. They took second place in their tournament last weekend. Thank you to coach Ken Hopton and the many individuals
that have helped out during the season. Thank you also to Mrs. Gretchen Rogus for coaching our cheerleaders.
This week is a short week for us. We will begin our mid-winter break on Friday, and will return to school on Wednesday. Right now, our students are working diligently on
their science fair projects, which will be on display during our open house March 9. This event coincides with the open house at Cardinal Mooney. We are especially
blessed at Our Lady on the River Parish because we have a Catholic campus that can be home to our students for their entire childhood education.
Would you like your son, daughter, grandchild, or young friend to join us at Holy Cross Catholic School? Do you think that it isn’t possible, because tuition is just too
great? The Archdiocese of Detroit takes part in a tuition assistance program known as Private School Aid Service or PSAS. These forms are available in the various church
offices and the religious education office. I urge you to stop in and pick up a form. By filing this form, you are also eligible for the various scholarship programs available
through Our Lady on the River. Also, becoming dedicated to using SCRIP will reduce your tuition. These programs are wonderful opportunities available to help make a
quality Catholic education a reality for all of our children. Please contact me to discuss these programs and how they can benefit you.
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Lent is the season that runs from Ash Wednesday until the start of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence and all Fridays
of Lent are days of abstinence.
Catholics are encouraged to observe the Good Friday fast through Holy Saturday and until celebration of the Easter Vigil.
The law of fasting binds people between 18 and 60 years of age and allows only one full meal a day but does not prohibit taking some food in the morning and
evening, drinking ordinary liquids does not break the fast.
The law of abstinence binds people 14 years and older and forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, the products of milk or condiments made of animal fat.
Permissible are soups flavored with meat, meat gravy and sauces. Lenten Observances

Operation Rice Bowl 2008
During Lent many Catholics are thinking about ways to fast, what meals to cook on Lent Fridays, and how to spend the season in solidarity with people living in
poverty. To find a comprehensive Lenten experience, they are turning to Operation Rice Bowl, Catholic Relief Services 33-year-old Lenten program that supports hunger
projects throughout the world.
Every year, ORB features stories from five different countries to illustrate the effects of poverty. An accompanying ORB calendar and interactive Web site can be
used as a Lenten guide, offering prayers, activities and authentic meatless recipes from Guatemala, Mali, India, Haiti and Cameroon. Preparing these dishes together allows
families to observe Lent and experience a simple meal while learning about places where people live on less than $2 a day ? and where meat is often considered a luxury.
In addition, people can donate the money they would have spent on a big meal to support CRS food security projects in more than 40 countries, including the
United States. Catholic Relief Services raises $8 million through Operation Rice Bowl every year. Seventy-five percent of the money is used to fund food security projects
overseas, the other 25 percent stay in local dioceses.
Rice Bowls are available at the church exits, for your Lenten Almsgiving. Please take one home today and help those living in poverty. Or you may become part
of the Operation Rice Bowl Online Community and receive weekly email reflections to help focus your Lenten experience through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

Sharing the Gospel
After Jesus' baptism, Jesus went 40 days without eating. Imagine how weak, hungry, tired and cranky you could be if you went that long without eating. That was
the moment the devil chose to try to trick Jesus into using God's power selfishly. But Jesus was still strong. Jesus had been praying those 40 days, getting ready to save
you and the whole world from the devil's tricks. Jesus would never give in to his enemy.
A Valentine's Day Blessing
Love, the Bible says, is patient.
May you never lose your temper with the one you love,
but be patient as God was with his people.
Love, the Bible says, is never boastful.
May you cherish your love as a masterpiece of God,
and not as a trophy to be displayed.
Love, the Bible says, is never selfish.
May you always be generous to your love, with time,
with affection, with encouragement and assistance.
For as Christ loved the Church,
so we should love our beloved.
As Mary was devoted to her Son,
so we should be devoted to those we love.
And as God loved and sacrificed for the world,
so may we always be to those we love.
Amen.
Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within
walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. They are in effect, ringing your doorbell.
Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the SVdP so that together we can help the suffering and poor. Through your donations, together we
can help the poor of our parish and community.
Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert for forty days of prayer and fasting. Are you open to being led by the Holy Spirit into the state in life God has
prepared for you?
