Vocations Office

This Sunday is the World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life. In 1997, Pope John Paul II called for

consecrated life to be promoted throughout the universal Church. Please recognize and give thanks for

those who have consecrated their vows to God and the Church through the vows of poverty, chastity and

obedience.
Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal help the Vocations Office work as a liaison to consecrated

communities in the Archdiocese of Detroit. The Vocation Office aids women and men in their

discernment process by sponsoring events as well as providing information on communities of religious

women, priests and brothers, their charism and their ministries.
CSA Minute

Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
“Let us always praise God’s Name!”

We begin Lent this Ash Wednesday by listening to a call to change our life. The ashes we

receive on our foreheads are an annual reminder of the passage of time and our constant need of

repentance. Ask the Lord to help you know and appreciate that God is with you on your Lenten journey.

It is a good time to start new patterns of prayer. The little black books of six minute meditations for Lent

are again available for you to take home for prayer.

Adult Lenten Scripture Sharing
The first gathering for Lenten renewal/Bible study through the scriptures of Lent will be Next

Wednesday, February 13th at 6:45 p.m. in St. Catherine’s Activity Center. Everyone is welcome. There

is no charge.

Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), requires that the sacred vessels used at

Mass must be purified by a priest, thus, our parish Eucharistic Ministers now return the vessels used for

distribution of Holy Communion to the altar for purification before taking them to the sacristy for washing.

Purifying involves rinsing the vessels with water, consuming the traces of the Blessed Sacrament with a

prayer, then drying the vessel with the purificator. This is the reason you have noticed the extraordinary

ministers at the altar after Holy Communion.
We appreciate the ministry of the parishioners who serve in this role. Those who serve in the

instituted ministry of lector are also appreciated. They have been designated to proclaim the readings

from Scripture. A question that often arises is: Can a lector also serve as a Eucharistic minister at the

same Mass? The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy says: “In liturgical celebrations, each person, who

has an office to perform, should do all of, but only, those parts which pertain to that office.” (28)
What that means is: the lector has one’s own proper function in the Eucharistic celebration.

Those serving as lectors, especially at the Sunday Eucharist, generally should not serve in any other

capacity at that particular celebration. The role of lector should not be visibly confused with the role of

other ministers. Most liturgy documents make it clear that when necessary, one may perform more than

one function. A central goal and mandate of the Second Vatican Council, was to distribute liturgical roles

as widely as possible among the assembly to create a more powerful symbol of the various members of

the Body of Christ working together in the liturgy. There is a wide variety of services and it is desirable

that different individuals exercise those services so that the talents and gifts God has placed within the

Christian community are fully utilized. At Holy Cross, seven individuals outside of the lector are needed

as extraordinary ministers at Mass. At St. Catherine, five individuals outside of the lector are needed. At

St. Mark, three individuals outside of the lector are needed. All serve in a spirit of faith and unity.
We are blessed that Our Lady on the River Parish has dedicated, generous liturgical ministers.

There is always a need for more, so if you are not yet, please consider becoming a lector or

extraordinary minister of the Eucharist.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word in Lent…
resumes next Sunday, February 10th at the 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Liturgies…let the children come

eager to open themselves to hear the Word of God!

Marine City K of C Breakfast
Last Sunday was the first opportunity Sr. Geraldine and I had to enjoy the pancake breakfast at

the K of C Hall on King Rd. It was a very generous serving of fine food. We agreed that the $10 we spent

was very worthwhile for a great breakfast, friendly service, & good company. Hope to see you there in the

future.
Trivia kudos to John & Joanne Vance
for a successful scripture search on Mary!

Pastor's Page
I am very happy to be home with my parish family! It was a wonderful time down in Florida where the sun

was shining and the cool breeze from the water put a smile on my face. By the end of the week I was

reenergized and longing to get back to the parish. The focus now is our journey together during the

Season of Lent. It may seem hard to believe but this Wednesday we walk with the Lord as he endures

his Passion, Death and Resurrection. We will hear through scripture that even our Lord felt the sting of

betrayal and abandonment, but Jesus demonstrates to us that he is not afraid to love us and forgive us.

Let us keep that in mind during Lent. That we must be willing to forgive as Jesus taught us.
Things will be different for me as it was during the Advent and Christmas Seasons, but I continue to ask

for your patience as I learn my way around these different worship sites. I know that you will guide me

along the way so that I can be the very best shepherd for you. The only thing bad about the vacation is

trying to return all the messages that were left on my voicemail, email or mailbox. I think I need another

week just to catch up on those things alone. Again, I am trying to get caught up to speed with everything

around the offices, so expect some delays if I have not returned your messages yet.
This past week we celebrated Catholic Schools Week and I enjoyed my liturgies with the grade

school students of Holy Cross and the high school students of Cardinal Mooney. I am very proud of them

and I ask for your continued prayers for our students, our teachers and all the families. They are working

and striving to be the very best intellectually and spiritually. We can never have enough prayers as far as

I am concerned so keep on praying for all of God’s children!
Finally, a funny thing happened to me while I was away. It seems like some green and white

gremlins infiltrated my MICHIGAN ROOM! I came home to find all my U. of M. décor covered in msu

colors. It was very funny and maybe I deserved some of this because of some things I said during the

football season, maybe. But, I am still trying to figure out how an alligator head ended up in my bed?
Thank you for your continued prayers and let us have a Lent in which we help each other carry the Cross

of Christ!
All my Prayers,
Fr. Jim

A Note From The Principal

I would again like to thank all of our parishioners for their continued support of the quality Catholic

education offered at Holy Cross Catholic School. Our annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week has

ended, however, the light of faith that we kindle will continue to burn bright in the hearts of our students.
This weekend, our varsity boys are wrapping up their basketball season with their tournament. Results

will follow in my column next week. This weekend, our fifth through eighth graders, many of their

parents, and myself, are busy packing. We will be leaving bright and early Monday morning for Camp

Wolverine. Located in Wolverine, Michigan, approximately thirty miles from the Mackinac Bridge, Camp

Wolverine provides a week of fun-filled educational growth for our students. The students not only grow

academically; they also develop interpersonal skills in working with others, and intrapersonal skills as

they challenge themselves. I ask that you pray for us as we travel. I will be happy to share this

experience with you upon our return. I would like to thank our many parent chaperones that take the

time out of their schedule to make this trip possible. I would especially like to thank Mrs. Anna Wade

and Ms. Shelley Robinson for their dedication to making this event possible.
It will be a very quiet week on our campus with so many of us out of the building. I am sure that there

will be many great things happening in our absence!
It is just over a month until the annual Holy Cross Irish Night Dinner Auction. I am excited about this

event. Auctions are a wonderful way to get in the spirit of supporting our school. One of my personal

favorites up for grabs this year is…being the principal for a day! This item, which will be featured in the

live auction, will entitle the lucky winner’s child to lead our school for a day! He or she will greet the

students as they arrive in the morning, lead us in our morning prayer, visit the classrooms, recognize

outstanding behavior, and enjoy lunch with me at the Riviera Restaurant. I am sure that there is even

more in store for the lucky winner, because I never know what my day will bring. Even if you don’t want

to be principal for a day, I encourage you to come out and join in the fun at our Irish Night Auction.

Please contact the school for more information.
Now that the holidays are over, many people forget about SCRIP. SCRIP is not just for holidays—it is

for EVERY DAY! Your everyday needs, from gas to groceries and pizza to prescriptions, can all be met

through our SCRIP program. The proceeds from SCRIP help our school and our parish. Perhaps you

don’t have children in the school, but would like to help. We are always looking to help our current and

new families provide a quality Catholic education for their children. Consider “adopting” a family. To

adopt a family, you would choose a family and purchase your own SCRIP with the credit going toward

that family’s tuition. What a wonderful way to guarantee the success of the children in YOUR parish.

Please contact me for more information on this worthwhile service.

In His Service,

Lenten Observances

Lent is the season that runs from Ash Wednesday until the start of the Mass of the Lord’s

Supper.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of total fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent

are days of abstinence.
In keeping with the spirit and meaning of the Lenten fast, Catholics are encouraged to observe

the Good Friday fast through Holy Saturday and until celebration of the Easter Vigil.
The law of fasting binds individuals from the completion of their 18th year to the beginning of

their 60th year, i.e., from the day after their 18th birthday to the day after their 59th birthday.
The law of fasting allows only one full meal a day but does not prohibit taking some food in the

morning and evening. The order of meals is optional; i.e., the full meal may be taken in the evening

instead of at midday. Also the quantity of food taken at the two lighter meals should not exceed the

quantity taken at the full meal, and drinking ordinary liquids does not break the fast.
The law of abstinence binds people from the completion of their 14 year, i.e., from the day after

their 14th birthday throughout life.
The law of abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, the products of milk or

condiments made of animal fat. Permissible are soups flavored with meat, meat gravy and sauces.

The Hug
No moving parts, no batteries,
No monthly payments, no fees,
Inflation proof, nontaxable.
In fact it’s quite relaxing.
It can’t be stolen, won’t pollute;
One size fits all, do not dilute.
It uses little energy,
But yields enormous results,
Relieves tension and stress,
Invigorates happiness,
Combats Depression,
And the blues of recession.
Corrects circulation
without unpleasant side effects.
It’s the perfect drug.
May I prescribe to one and all-the hug?

Why are Ash Wednesday, Lent and Easter so early this year?

This year February 6 is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is so early

this year that Easter will occur on March 23, two days after the beginning of spring. Why are Lent and

Easter so early?
The dating of Easter has been a concern of the Christian community from the very beginning.

Christians of Asia Minor differed with those of Rome and the West on when to celebrate Easter. The

Christians of Asia Minor preferred to celebrate Easter on the day when Jews celebrate Passover, the

14th day of the lunar month of Nisan. Christians in the West insisted that Easter should be celebrated on

Sunday, the day that Jesus rose from the dead, and not on any day of the week that the 14th of Nisan

fell.
Disagreements continued until the matter was addressed by the Council of Nicea in 325 AD.

The delegates at Nicea established a rule for dating Easter Sunday. According to this rule, Easter is to

be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon which follows March 21, the spring equinox. As

a result, the earliest possible date for Easter is March 22; the latest is April 25.
