Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
“Come, let us praise the Lord our God”

This week turns the page on January, and we look ahead with eager hope to a grace-filled sunshiny February!

Lent is just a little over one week away. It is a beautiful season directing our spiritual lives toward springtime as well.

The “little black books” will be available on Ash Wednesday and the weekend at each site. These six-minute

meditations continue to inspire us and be helpful in this upcoming holy season.
During Lent, much focus is placed on our readiness to celebrate the new life of Easter. No alleluias are sung.

As much as possible no projects or activities taking place. It is a quiet, reflective time giving us opportunity to be more

faithful in our lives in relationship with Jesus Christ.
A parish adult Lenten Scripture Sharing and Renewal will be offered during Lent. This will be on the

Wednesdays of Lent at 6:45 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Activity Center. No registration is needed. There is no charge. No

previous experience with the Bible is required. Reflecting on the daily and Sunday scriptures of the season can help us

in living Lent day by day in a graceful and grace-filled way. Everyone is welcomed.
On Wednesday, February 27th, our session will be in a different format in collaboration with the Marine City

Ecumenical Ministerial Association Lenten Series at Holy Cross Church. A Soup & Bread Supper will be offered at 6:00

p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Lenten Series Service in the Church.
Catholic Schools Week
It’s definitely good news in education as we focus on the leadership that our Catholic Schools provide, both

Holy Cross and Cardinal Mooney. Prayers and blessings to our superb pastor, Fr. Jim Lopez, our exemplary principal of

our parish school, Mrs. Amanda Lund, amazing quality staff, remarkable children and terrific parents. In today’s

scriptures, we are reminded that Christianity is about light. Just as Jesus is the Light of the world, so we His people,

the church, are called to be light. It is true that “Catholic Schools light the way”. The light we shine is a gift given from

“following Jesus.” It is not to call attention to ourselves; our call, our vocation, is for others, not ourselves.
In our simplicity, our ordinary ways, we can mirror the light of Jesus. This is the week to stand up with new

energy and walk as children of the Light, called to be holy, dynamic followers of Jesus the Christ, inspiring others to

follow Jesus themselves, discovering what abundant life is all about, what a life of meaning and purpose, community and

service looks like!
Trivia time…..Kudos to John & Joann Vance for discovering the books of Gospel, Letter and Law correctly!
New question….There is an abundance of references of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the New Testament…can

you name one from each of the Gospels?
Be well, keep warm, have a good week.
My love, support and prayer,
Sister Mary Ann Ankoviak, csj

Catholic Schools Office

Various Catholics schools throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit are hosting open houses this month. Catholic schools

are an integral part of the educational ministry of the Church, which continues the teaching mission of Jesus Christ.

Catholic schools proclaim the Gospel; develop a faith community in which Gospel values are formed, experienced and

lived; preserve and teach the doctrines and traditions of the Catholic faith; and provide a learning environment which

fosters academic excellence.
Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the Office of Catholic Schools to help Catholic schools provide their students

with exceptional academic training and faith formation. The office, which is part of the Department of Education, provides

teacher education and accreditation services, develops ongoing policy and curriculum guidelines, and offers professional

growth opportunities for teachers and principals.
For a listing of Catholic school open houses, go to www.aodonline.org.

Fr. Matt’s Matters

Church Leadership-One most poignant lesson of the New Testament comes from St. Paul (this weekend’s 2nd

reading), regarding dissentions among the faithful. Paul admonishes the Christian community at Corinth: “…I urge you,

in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, not to have factions among yourselves, but to be in agreement in what you

profess. From what Chloe’s people have been telling me about you…it is clear that there are serious differences among

you. What I mean is that one of you is declaring, ‘I belong to Paul,’ another, ‘I belong to Apollos,’ still another ‘I belong

to Cephas (Peter),’ and the fourth, ‘I belong to Christ.’ Has Christ been split up?! Was it Paul that was crucified for you,

or was it in Paul’s name that you were baptized?” It seems safe to say Paul would declare that we all belong to and

SHOULD BE UNITED in Christ Jesus, whether it be Corinthian Christians (the leather people, ha, ha) of 1,950 years ago

or in one of today’s Catholic parishes.
I call attention to this issue only because it is universally significant all the time, something about which we

should always be vigilant. The “Church”, rightly understood, belongs to Christ, thus we each belong to Christ. What are

EXAMPLES today that Paul was addressing then? Many, including Roman Catholic priests who see themselves as

“Pope John II priests,” or “Vatican II priests,” or “Tridentine priests,” or “I’m on my own priests”, or are fairly or unfairly

labeled as such by others. There are Catholics who shop for a priest or church that suits their predilections, a.k.a.

“roamin’ Catholics.” To leave and attend another parish is justifiable, however, if given some of the serious issues that

may arise. What we’re getting at here are attitudes. If I am a baptized, confirmed, Eucharist participating Catholic

Christian or Catholic priest, my primary allegiance is to Jesus Christ and the One, True, Living God who sent Him, and

to do my best to serve God within my vocational church context. Yes, there are things we need to hash through together

to set policies and make decisions, and sometimes decisions are thrust upon us and we had seemingly no input on the

matter. Such is what it is like in any large human group endeavor, some institutions being more democratic than others.
As St. Paul could be paraphrased, our attitude must be that of Christ’s, yet even more humble because none

of us is the Son of God the same way Jesus is. Jesus did not deem equality with God something to be grasped at,

rather He took the form of a servant. How much more then are we to humbly seek to serve each other, even within the

authority role we may have? Working together as “church” in whatever context is to be loving, respectful, not having to

‘get my way,’ etc. We are not right to condemn every aspect of our country’s culture, yet what’s expected of us by God

as His people may be quite different than what is “business or attitudes as usual” in the world of the corporations,

unions, politics (especially!), TV, competitive sports, court rooms, the military, you name it. Christians don’t seek to

make more adversaries, or to be adversarial especially as we are to seek the common good: what is best for everyone

through non-violent means. Some of the attitudes we have or cop, and I know I have some, we need to let God help us to

get rid of and put on Christ! Thank you to so many of you who have been Christ-like to me already in my first three

weeks.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK- - I know I benefited greatly from my many years in Catholic schools. I say such

without arrogant airs of a delusional superiority complex. Rather, I look at our schools as options which can have an

atmosphere imbued with the Spirit of Jesus Christ, even as some students may not be Catholic or Christian, yet if we

are as we can be, it may rub off! What I found in my Catholic upbringing was that I was offered something I could reject

as an adult, but I didn’t! I’ve had my struggles and questions, but I was given a childhood environment my parents had

the right to give me or impose on me, and I had the opportunity to ‘learn it’ and ‘catch it.’ I claim no holy perfection for

my family, and yet I gladly testify to our involvement in our local parish, Catholic schools and areas of service. Every

family promotes at least something like a religion, even if it is only doing your own thing with your time off work, and just

sleeping in and worshipping your own appetites on whatever qualifies as the weekend.
I am most grateful my parents did not attempt to have me grow up in a vacuum, because there is no such

thing, life automatically gets filled in with something. I have some interesting and perhaps humorous stories from my

youthful school days, do you? Maybe more on that later. God love you!
With prayers,
Fr. Matt Ellis
Associate Pastor

A Note From The Principal

Happy Catholic Schools Week! I would like to thank the parishioners of Our Lady on the River Parish for their

continued support of quality Catholic education. Our school is continuing to grow as you spread the good news of

Catholic education to others. For the past 139 years, the people of our parish have made a Catholic education possible

for their children and grandchildren. I pray that we will continue to make Catholic education a proud part of Our Lady on

the River!
I would like to thank our families for making Catholic education a priority in their children’s lives. I truly pray that you

will find your time here rewarding, and that, as your partner in education, Holy Cross will have a lifetime impact on your

children and their academic and faith formation.
I would like to thank our pastor, Fr. Jim, for his continued support of Catholic education on the Our Lady on the River

campus. We are the only preschool through twelfth grade Catholic campus in our vicariate. The support of Fr. Jim, and

all of our religious leaders enables Our Lady on the River to offer a lifetime of Catholic education to all who wish to take

part.
I would like to thank the teachers of Holy Cross Catholic School and Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School. The

dedication that you have to providing a quality education, guided by the light of faith, is what makes our schools strong.
I would also like to thank my parents for the sacrifices that they made to ensure that I had a Catholic education. The

foundation in faith that I received through Catholic education is what brings me to Holy Cross Catholic School and Our

Lady on the River Parish today. I pray that I will always use both my knowledge and faith to help others discover the

true merits of Catholic education.
Last week, I talked about the various events that take place during Catholic Schools Week. We will be celebrating our

theme “Catholic Schools Light the Way.” The light that comes from Christ, guides us in many ways. On Monday, we

will celebrate the “Light in Our Hearts.” On Tuesday, we will celebrate the “Light in Our Homes.” On Wednesday, we

will be shining the “Light in Our School.” On Thursday, we will celebrate the “Light in Our Community.” On Friday, we

will end our official celebration of Catholic Schools Week by sharing the “Light in Our World.”
On Saturday, Holy Cross was represented by a number of student athletes of the mind. A group of students in the fifth

through eighth grades competed in the annual Blue Water Catholic Schools’ Academic Olympics. In sports action, our

junior varsity boys wrap up their basketball tournament today. Our varsity boys begin their basketball tournament this

Thursday, here at Holy Cross. With the cold temperatures putting a damper on outdoor fun, consider joining us in the

gym, cheering our boys to victory.
As you prepare for the coming week, have you ordered SCRIP? I would be happy to show you how SCRIP can help

both you and our parish!
In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Eat Healthy and Prevent a Cold and the Flu

Cold and flu season is upon us.  However you can boost your body's immune system by eating the

right foods. Those foods include colorful vegetables such as carrots, apricots and broccoli.  Studies have also found that

foods containing B-6, those being, bananas, avocados and dark green leafy vegetables can too ward off a cold and the

flu. Also the minerals found in whole grains, peas and cooked dried beans can give you the extra protection you need.

Annual K of C Free Throw Contest
For Youth Age 10-14

The Marine City Council of the Knights of Columbus will once again host its local competition at the Holy

Cross Activity Center. This is the first round of a state-wide competition for youth from 10 to 14 years of age. This

year’s local competition will take place on Sunday, February 3, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Any boy or girl is eligible if they were at least 10 years old but not yet 15 years old on January 1, 2008. That

means anyone born from January 2, 1993 to January 1, 1998 is eligible.
If your child would like to participate, bring him or her (or them) to the Holy Cross Activity Center, located

between the Church and the School at 610 South Water St., Marine City, on February 3rd at 11:00 a.m. You will need

to come in with your child or children to sign a permission form for each. We will be finished by 2:00 p.m., and you are

welcome to stay and watch (or help), but it is not required. The child should wear gym-appropriate shoes.
Each participant receives a certificate, and the boys’ and girls’ winner in each age category is eligible to

proceed to the District Competition, which will be hosted by Au Lac Council (Anchorville) on Saturday, February 9th.

For more information, please send e-mail to Scott Anderson, Event Chairman, at anderssc@udmercy.edu.

Thank You St. Catherine Elves

A big, BIG Thank You is in order to all those wonderful St Catherine elves who so generously and cheerfully

gave their time and muscle to taking down the trees, the mountain, nativity, wreathes, flowers and cleaning every area!
Thank you and be proud of a monumental task well done. You are the best. We hesitate to name names lest

we miss one of our important workers. Once again, many hands made light work.
See you at Mass and God Bless.
 Sandy Malik and Wanda Edie

Adult Scripture Sharing
What Are You Doing For Lent?

The first gathering of the Parish Adult Scripture Sharing will be Wednesday, February 13th at 6:45 p.m. at St

Catherine’s. We will meet for five weeks throughout Lent. All men and women are welcome to come and be renewed by

God’s Word.
We’ve checked the TV guide and that time slot looks pretty empty, so why don’t we get together to share

God’s Word.
Sr. Mary Ann Ankoviak

Thank You !!

The Holy Cross Booster Club would like to thank the anonymous donor that made a very generous donation to

the Booster Club last year. Your caring and generosity overwhelms us. May God always bless you.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held for one hour following Mass as follows:
February 1st - the first Friday of the month following the 9:00 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross
and
February 5th - the first Tuesday of the month following the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Catherine

Benediction and closing will follow after one hour of adoration. Support of this devotion is vital.

In case of a funeral, Adoration will be cancelled.
