Just a reminder to all that I am going on a little vacation this week. Following my last Mass I am departing for a little
warmer climate. However, before I depart I would like to thank all the volunteers who came to our churches and helped
removed the Christmas decorations and clean up the sanctuary area. We should feel good about how beautiful all of our
sites looked for the birth of our Lord. So I thank you for your time and your dedication to Our Lady on the River Parish!
While I am away, I go with no worries because Fr. Matt Ellis will be taking good care of you. Please keep me
in your prayers and know that you are in mine.
Sincerely Yours in Christ, Fr. Jim
Here is now a little something from Fr. Matt’s Matters!
Fr. Matt’s Matters
I arrived here the evening of New Year’s Day and I know now I do not really need any resolutions. Practically
everything I could think I would need is present at Our Lady on the River Parish, that is, everything good for the heart and
mind, the soul and body of a parish priest. I, Fr. Matthew Ellis, am a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit, ordained
November 5, 1988 (the same year Fr. Jim Lopez graduated from Divine Child H.S., Dearborn). Yes, I’m rather old, but I
still have 90% of my ‘top of the head’ hair, albeit salted with some pepper left. I have been told it’s distinguished, which
as my dad used to say, is better than being extinguished. Fr. Jim and I are already jibing each other, which I’d say is a
good sign.
Before I began to know Fr. Jim this past year, several years ago his mother, of Redford, and my mother, of
Livonia, had been working as ‘lunch time grandmothers’ at St. Michael’s Parish Grade School in Livonia, MI, (you know,
in that foreign country, the “west side”). I was at St. Anne’s in Warren the past 3 months, and I’m grateful for Fr. Koshy’s
kind cooperation in the bishop’s plan for me to re-enter full time parish priestly ministry. In God’s Providence all events
work out toward the good.
I was born in Detroit, grew up in Livonia and went to Catholic schools for 21 years, yes, that includes the
seminary. I attended a Catholic summer camp in Ohio for 2 weeks each year for about 6 years. I was acquainted with
several priests in my youth, and was hit hard with inner inspiration to become a priest when I was 20 years old. I entered
priestly formation at age 22 and was ordained at age 28. You may have seen me standing next to Pope John Paul II,
holding the microphone for him at the 2 and ½ hour Mass at the Pontiac Silverdome, September. 17, 1987, but probably
you noticed the Pope more, which is only right. In 1988-89 I was at St. Mary’s in New Baltimore and we were
responsible for Masses on Harsens Island, St Mark’s. From 1989-1993 I was Associate Pastor at St. John Neumann in
Canton, MI. From 1993-96 I was associate pastor at Divine Child Church in Dearborn, where Fr. Jim Lopez, as a
20-something, was attending Holy Liturgy, the Mass. My words served as such a ‘perspiration’ for him he too wanted to
be a priest! More later if you can stand it.
With prayers, Fr. Matt Ellis
Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
“Our God is the God of holiness and goodness;
Let us praise Him!”
Christmas is over, maybe the tree is down, and yet we have come to church to gather at the Eucharist today.
discovering once again the Presence of Jesus, the Word of God, the Living Bread Who enables us to ‘live the Eucharist’
we have come to celebrate in this ’ordinary’ time. We believe that God is infinitely ‘good’, so our goodness is a sharing
in His Divine Goodness. We are guided by the Spirit to new destinations every day, every week. What are we looking
for? John the Baptist in today’s Gospel tells us to “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
This week marks the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion. Many
will march in Washington DC this week to call for the protection of those children and foster a greater respect for the
basic right to life, which the late John Paul II said was the foundation for all other rights in society. With the observance
of Martin Luther King Day, we are reminded once again that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere…“ and
of the ever present urgency for a new cooperation among all people so that God’s dream of respecting the dignity and
value of each person is realized. That too, is the nature of the Church: connectedness, community and
interrelatedness, we depend on each other! As people born of God’s breath, we look for the time when bickering and
griping is put aside and the only words spoken of one another are words that give life and encouragement, that find favor
with God.
Anthony DeMello tells the story of a dynamic young woman who was suffering from stress and strain. The
doctor prescribed tranquilizers, rest and a return visit. When she returned, the doctor asked if she felt any different.
She replied ‘no’, but she noticed that other people seemed a lot more relaxed. DeMello goes on to point out that how
we see other people is not so much as they are but as we are.
May we exercise more readily the “Power of Choice” this week…let’s
“Choose to love - rather than hate
Choose to smile - rather than frown.
Choose to persevere - rather than quit.
Choose to praise-rather than gossip.
Choose to heal - rather than wound.
Choose to give - rather than grasp.
Choose to act - rather than delay.
Choose to pray - rather than despair.
Choose to forgive - rather than curse.”
(author unknown)
As this week’s events unfold, may we allow God’s goodness in us to be shared with others. May Jesus, the
Lamb of God, strengthen us in faith and deepen our love in service to one another to the glory of God!
Trivia Congrats to John & Joanne V., Mary M., and Elmer D. for the correct Gospel parallels for Deut. 6:5.

Office of Catholic Social Action
January 22 marks the anniversary of the United States Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Roe vs. Wade.
In the 35 years since, millions of abortions have been performed in the United States. Many women who choose to abort
a pregnancy find living with the memory of what they have done very difficult. They suffer, oftentimes feeling separated
from God, their families and even themselves.
Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the Archdiocese of Detroit to help women, and men, who have
been affected by the tragedy of abortion through Project Rachel. A confidential healing ministry, Project Rachel provides
support and witnesses the compassion of Christ through the Church to help these individuals come to terms with their
loss, guilt, anxiety, depression and loneliness that are common following an abortion. The ministry also offers the
opportunity for reconciliation with the Church.
For more information on Project Rachel, or for assistance, please call (888) RACHEL5 or e-mail
projectrachel@aod.org.

Rides Still Needed to Mass
We have two very faithful female parishioners that are in need of our help.
One would like a ride to any Holy Cross Mass every week, the other needs a ride only during bad weather, she
would need room for her wheel chair. Please call Sr. Mary Ann or Holy Cross Rectory Office at 810-765-3568 if you can
help.
Is there anyone out there that can help with this need? We get calls asking for rides periodically, so if you are
able to help it would be greatly appreciated.
A Note From The Principal
The Christmas season is officially over, and liturgically speaking, we are now in ‘”ordinary time.” The reason we refer
to it as ordinary time is because it is the counted or ‘ordered’ time before the next important liturgical season. We can
truly consider it a countdown, just like we might do before a birthday or special event.
It is also far from ordinary here at Holy Cross Catholic School! We are waiting for one of the most exiting
weeks in our school year: Catholic Schools Week! Beginning next Sunday, January 27, please join us for our annual
celebration of Catholic Schools Week. This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools Light the Way.” We are focusing on the
light that we received at Baptism, and that we carry inside ourselves. At Holy Cross, we are able to let that light shine
freely in all that we do. Our combined lights reach out to warm the hearts of all we come in contact with. We will
celebrate a new aspect of the Catholic Schools Week theme each day.
On Monday, we will celebrate the “Light in Our Hearts.” The students will also begin a project reaching out to
other Catholic school students in our country. Our goal is for each Holy Cross student to share their light with a student
in a Catholic school in another state.
On Tuesday, we will celebrate the “Light in Our Homes.” Our families make many sacrifices to provide a Holy
Cross Catholic education for us, and we will be thanking them with all of our hearts.
On Wednesday, we will be shining the “Light in Our School.” We will be taking a walking trip through town to
the post office to mail our letters to our Catholic school colleagues across the country. A delegation of eighth graders
will be attending the Catholic Schools Week Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit. In the
evening we will gather together with our families for a game night in the activity center.
On Thursday, we will celebrate the “Light in Our Community.” We will share our blessings by raising money
for Downriver Helping Hands through a dress-down day. We will also recognize and support our winter athletes.
On Friday, we will end our official celebration of Catholic Schools Week by sharing the “Light in Our World.”
Here we will thank God and our families during a Mass prepared by students from all grade levels. We will also have an
ice cream social.
This is an excellent way for us to rejoice in who we are and in what makes us special! Please pray for us
during this time, and for all who may be considering a quality Holy Cross Catholic School education for their children. If
you would like to learn more about becoming part of our family, please call me at 810-765-3591 or email me at
principal@holycrossonline.net. We would like to make you a part of our celebration.
Next week we will be preparing for the first of our basketball tournaments, and a number of our students will
compete in the Blue Water Parochial Schools’ Academic Olympics. Please pray for the success of our athletes!

Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

What Is a Vocation?
The root word for vocation is vocare, which is Latin for "to call." God has created each one of us for a particular
calling or destiny in this life and the hereafter. Through the Sacrament of Baptism God calls each one of us to live out
that calling in love, holiness and service to God and one another. The path we choose to follow is important, because by
actively discerning God's call and responding, we will live our lives in true joy and fulfillment.
It is important to remember that a true vocation is an invitation from God to assume some responsibility to share in the
mission of the Church. God never forces Himself upon us. The Lord constantly encourages, nurtures and pulls us in the
direction we should be heading. If we truly listen with our hearts and not to our fears and doubts, the authentic invitation
from God will be easier to know.
Some will live out their vocational calling in marriage and parenthood; some will remain single; others will be
called to serve as priests or consecrated. Each call is unique and we are totally free to respond.
Learning what our specific vocation is requires a process we call discernment. It will be utilized at various
stages in our lives and God will use others to assist us in that process. What is most important is to actively seek from
God what it is we are called to do.
If you feel God is offering you the grace of a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life, call Father Tim
Birney at the Vocation Office at 313-237-5875 or visit our website at www.vocationsdetroit.org.
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who
asks, receives, and the one who seeks, finds; and the one who knocks the door will be opened."

A Car Wash For Life
Jonathan Tonkowich had a moment of inspiration during his senior year at Thomas Aquinas College in
California. He wanted to raise money for local pro-life organizations and with the help of friends invited young people
across the country (via the internet) to host a “Wash for Life” on the same day in September nationwide. Over 3,000
people got involved in washing close to 6,000 vehicles raising over $82,000 for pregnancy care centers in their own
communities.

The News on Nosebleeds
The most common cause of nose bleeds is trauma. Dryness inside the nose can also cause bleeding, as can
being in high altitudes. colds, medications and allergies. To treat a nosebleed, sit up straight and pinch the nostrils
together firmly for 10 minutes. An ice pack can also be placed across the bridge of the nose. When the bleeding stops,
take it easy. Do not blow your nose or it may dislodge the clot and your nose will begin bleeding again. If a nose bleed
consists of bleeding that begins high in the nose and flows down the back of the mouth, medical attention is needed.
This is an upper septum bleed, however these bleeds are rare.

A VOCATION PRAYER
God, help me to listen to your call
in all the ways you speak to me:
through prayer and the scriptures,
through the Church and the world,
through those who love and care for me,
and through my own hopes and desires.
Guide me to search openly
and learn about life's choices,
that I may respond faithfully to your call
and choose a vocation and career
in which I can love wholeheartedly
and serve others with the gifts you have given me.
God, today I thank you for your love
and for all your gift of life holds for me. Amen.

Words to Live By
Authentic peace is only possible if the dignity of the human person is promoted at every level of society, and
every individual is given the chance to live in accordance with dignity.
- Pope John Paul II
Sharing the Gospel
Imagine how excited John the Baptist must have felt after he baptized Jesus. He knew without a doubt that
Jesus was God's Son. The very next day John told the crowds that Jesus would take away the sins of the world. God's
people had eaten a Passover lamb every year to remember how God saved them from death in Egypt. Jesus was the
Lamb of God. He frees you from your old sins and offers you new life with God.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Have you ever said hello to someone you thought you recognized, only realizing too late that this was a
complete stranger? Or, as in the case of my daughter, sat down next to a familiar face on a train, reminiscing and trying
to make small talk, only to find out that the person only looked like your best friend's boyfriend? All too often, we feel we
know someone, when in reality they are perfect strangers.
John the Baptist's excitement in today's Gospel reading from John can hardly be contained. "Behold!" he
shouts excitedly to all who would hear. "The Lamb of God!" he exclaims. John also says, "I did not know him?" This is
not to be taken literally; of course John knew Jesus, but until the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus, John did not truly
know him as the long-awaited Savior, the paschal lamb who would shed his own blood for our sins.
We know of Jesus, but how do we "know Jesus?" Through our baptism we are made one with Jesus, but to
really know him we must go down to the water with him, fully immerse ourselves in the cleansing waters of new life and
be reborn with the Holy Spirit (CCC 537). Walk with Jesus; talk with him. Fulfill the righteousness he spoke of, and never
be afraid to speak of his unending love for each and every one of us.
