Sharing the Gospel

Jesus changed Simon's name to Peter. Peter means rock. He knew that Peter would be strong enough to

hold his church together. Pretend that God is changing your name today. God might choose a name that says

what he wants you to become: Patience, Courage, or Honesty. God could choose Bible names: Moses, Noah,

Mary, or Joseph. Choose a name for yourself. God will call you by your new name. He will be proud of you.

Prayer
Lord, call me by name. I am listening.

Mission for the Week
I will tell others about how God has been good to me.

Thoughts from your Pastoral Associate
“God chose us in Christ:
Let us give thanks and praise!”

This week our country will witness the inauguration of a newly elected President of the United States. As

the Presidency turns, as the world turns, so does the world’s perception of us and our perception of ourselves.

What are we looking for in our world today?
Changes are in store. As we change presidents, we change the names. A new name has always been an

important way of revealing new information about a person’s role and identity. Name changes were significant in

Jewish history too. In today’s Gospel, Jesus renames Simon – Cephas or Peter, the Rock. Though Peter at this

point in his life was far from being a dependable rock for Jesus, his name change signals a direct relationship to his

role in salvation history. In Verse 42 we hear that simply by having “looked at him”, Jesus discerns something

special in Peter and detected enough of Peter’s strength of character to name him as someone who will become an

unyielding person of faith. It is only after Jesus’ resurrection that Peter begins to truly take on his new name for the

emerging church and true discipleship.
Living up to our names is challenging. In Baptism, we are gifted as beloved sons and daughters of God.

We were named by our parents and we took on a new identity. God chose each of us in Christ, and continues to

call us again and again to listen, to open our hearts, as He leads us forward, perhaps to a radical change that must

take place within us if we are to follow faithfully Jesus, the Lamb of God, the Way, the Truth and the Life.
Something to think about:
	G. K. Chesterton once said: “If God can make a saint out of someone like Simon Peter, maybe God can

even do something with me!” And….on a sign sighted at a “Service Station” – (an oxymoron for sure) ….“Courteous

and efficient self-service”
As the week unfolds….
What are we looking for????
Many will join the 2009 March for Life pilgrimage in Washington D.C. marking the 36th anniversary of the

Supreme Court’s Roe v Wade decision. and calling for the protection of the unborn and a fostering of a greater

respect for the basic right to life. Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats are a beautiful opportunity for any person who has

struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of an abortion to help experience the mercy and compassion of God.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
The theme for this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is “That they may become one in your hand.”

Based on the text of Ezekiel 37:15-19 ff. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity emphasizes the importance of

coming together as a community in prayer. It is a worldwide celebration which began in 1908 in Garrison, N.Y.
Thank You
Sincere thanks for the many good wishes on January 9th. Henri Nouwen, in his book, “Here and Now”

says that “celebrating a birthday is exalting life and being glad for it. We celebrate the present moment. We do not

complain about what happened or speculate about what will happen. We lift someone up and say thank you for

being born and being among us.” When your birthday comes, be sure to celebrate YOU!
Blessings, prayer, love and thanks,

Pastor's Page
Welcome Home blessings to Detroit’s new Archbishop! Bishop Allen Vigneron of the Blue Water Vicariate

returns home to the Archdiocese after being the bishop of the Oakland Diocese in California since 2003. For the

Archdiocese, we are going to be experiencing a first in our church’s history. We have never had an Archbishop

selected from within our presbyterate. All of our Archbishops have been selected from other parts of the country but

never one from within the Detroit area. So we are witnessing and participating in a very historical event in our local

Church. The installation of the new Archbishop takes place on Wednesday, January 28th at 2:00 p.m. at Blessed

Sacrament Cathedral. Mark you calendars and know that I will be attending this event of my former seminary rector

because he did so much for me as I studied at Sacred Heart that I must go and show my support for him and his

new ministry.
As we say hello to Bishop Vigneron, we send blessings to Adam Cardinal Maida as he begins his

retirement. Although Cardinal Maida is retiring he is not leaving the metro area completely. He will still be here to

assist the new Archbishop during this transitional period. So we pray for the Cardinal that the Lord will continue to

watch over him as he begins a new chapter in his life: RETIREMENT! This is an opportunity for him to reconnect

with his family in Pennsylvania and an opportunity to reconnect in his relationship with God through personal prayer

and reflection. Let us keep both men in our prayers!
Speaking of prayers, you will notice an insert in today’s paper regarding an opportunity in receiving a

Plenary Indulgence as we continue our celebration of the year of St. Paul. The Cardinal has asked that we pass on

this information to all parishes so that everyone can receive the invitation to participate in this unique pilgrimage.

However, the indulgence is only received if you complete the following conditions: sacramental confession,

Eucharistic Communion and prayers for the Pontiff’s intentions. Please read the Cardinal’s letter carefully!
Finally, I ask for your prayers for those families who are struggling with this difficult economy and job

market. Your prayers will give them comfort and courage as they must face these difficult trials in their lives. But as

we have been reminded through scripture, we must not be afraid. We must pass through these trials in order to get

stronger in our faith and in our lives! We are to remember that we are one family and when one suffers, we all suffer.

But when one resurrects from the trial, we are to rejoice with that person.
All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim

Vocations Office

National Vocations Awareness Week begins this Sunday with the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which marks

Jesus’ initiation into public ministry. From the universal call to holiness at baptism, each one of us receives a

special vocational calling from God.
Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the archdiocesan Vocations Office to strengthen vocations for men

to serve as priests, deacons and brothers and for women to serve as religious sisters. Later this month, from

January 22 to 25, the office is sponsoring a discernment weekend to allow men aged 16 or older considering

diocesan priesthood to experience Sacred Heart Major Seminary firsthand. Throughout the year, the office works as

a liaison to Consecrated Communities in the Archdiocese and plans events to promote vocations.
Please take a moment to pray for the renewal and strengthening of vocations during National Vocations Awareness

Week. For more information about discernment weekends, vocation-related events or other CSA-funded programs

and ministries, go to www.aodonline.org.

New Fellowship Luncheon
St. Mark Activity Center

Beginning on Sunday, January 18th, a special luncheon will be available in the Activity Center at St. Mark

following the 10:30 a.m. Mass on the 3rd Sunday of each month. The menu for January 18th, consists of meat loaf,

mashed potatoes, salad, cake and coffee or tea. The price is: $7.00 a person. Reservations are required. Deadline

for reservations this month is no later than Sunday, January 11th, by 6:00 p.m. Call in your reservations to the St.

Mark Office at 810-748-3828 and leave your name, telephone number, and the number of reservations you are

making. We hope to see you there.

A Note From The Principal

This past Thursday and Friday, I was on retreat with other principals from our diocese regarding Catholic

identity. Catholic identity is more than the logo on our uniforms and letterhead or the name of our school. Our true

Catholic identity is shown by how we demonstrate our beliefs. This is one of the blessings that make our school

different from other schools. We are able to offer a quality academic program, while incorporating the faith and

values that our families teach their children each day. We attend Mass each week as a school, not to take the

place of a weekend Mass, but to support you as you take your children to Sunday’s liturgy. I look forward to

sharing more from my retreat with you in the coming weeks.
This week marks the end of the first semester. It is hard to believe that we will truly be halfway through

the school year! This week, we will have four full days of school. On Friday, our students will have the day off, and

our teachers will report for professional development.
Our winter sports season is starting to wind down. Next Wednesday, we will play OLIC in Anchorville.

The JV tournament will begin Thursday and run through Saturday at St. Peter’s in Richmond. The varsity

tournament will be the following week. On Saturday, students in grades 5-8 will also participate in the Academic

Olympics. This vicariate-wide event, hosted by St. A’s in Richmond is an opportunity to demonstrate our academic

abilities. Teams engage in math, problem solving, public speaking, and religion competitions. This is a wonderful

way to come together outside of the ‘gym.’
We are getting very close to Catholic Schools’ Week. This is a wonderful time of year—a real Spirit

week! We are able celebrate our uniqueness as a Catholic school. We will have various spirit days and activities

that celebrate who we are. This year’s theme, which we adopted as our year-long theme, is “Celebrate Service.”

We have participated in various service projects, including gathering supplies for servicemen, collecting food, and

raising money for those in need. We are grateful for the opportunity to help others.
It is never too soon to start thinking about sending your child to Holy Cross. If you are considering making

this change for your child, I ask you to call the school office to make an appointment with me so that I can help you

find ways to make a Holy Cross education a reality. I am proud to be your principal and I would appreciate the

opportunity to share our parish school with YOU!

In His Service,
Mrs. Amanda Lund, Principal

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

As part of our parish RCIA process, the catechumens and candidates have, as a resource, a small

book entitled The Faith We Profess. The author, Fr. Peter Vaghi, offers a collection of reflections in explaining, in

clear language, each of the articles of the creed.
We have two creeds from the early Church: the shorter Apostles’ Creed and the longer Nicene Creed.

Each Sunday, after the homily, we recite the Nicene Creed – perhaps sometimes without really thinking about it.
For the RCIA participants, who are new to the Catholic faith, it is a new and challenging journey, as they

become more familiar with the various articles of the creed. Our hope is that all of us realize more readily that our

profession of faith is a fundamental life decision that we renew each Sunday, and one that has consequences for

how we live our lives and the choices we make. Each week, we will offer reflections on the twelve articles of the

Apostles’ Creed to help strengthen our faith.

Flowers for the Lord

If you would like to personally provide fresh flowers for the tabernacle altar in St. Mark Church for a

particular Sunday or occasion, please call the St. Mark Office at 810-748-3828 no later than Wednesday the week

prior.

Collecting for our Veterans

We are currently collecting for our veterans in VA Hospitals. Mr. Bob Williams who is a Chaplin will be

picking up the needed articles and delivering them to the veterans hospitals in Ann Arbor, Detroit and Saginaw.

Please deposit these items in the boxes in the vestibules of Holy Cross, St. Catherine and St. Mark churches.

Items Needed include:
Scuffies (slippers)	Shaving bag Hair brushes
Large combs (no rat tail combs) Shaving cream

Money donations are accepted in check form; make payable to: American Legion Post #108. The money is used

to help Vets in many ways. For example, money to get back home, pay medical bills, utility bills, etc. PLEASE,

NO CASH. For more information, call Dovis Lloyd @ 810-765-4610.

Prayer for Christian Unity

now more than ever,
your church is fragmented
throughout the world.
In our search for You we have divided ourselves rather than seeking You
as one united people on our pilgrim way.
Help all those who call upon Your name
to show Your light to the world as one family, one holy nation,
one royal priesthood,
and united as one, holy, catholic and apostolic church.
Amen.
