Our Lady On The River Parish Holy Cross Church, St. Catherine of Alexandria Church, St. Mark Chapel
January 13, 2008	Baptism of the Lord

Pastor's Page
This week we recognize and celebrate Vocation Awareness Week. I would like to begin with by thanking those people that recognized in me the call to the

priesthood. First, the Bernadine Sisters from St. Robert Bellarmine and from the Church of the Divine Child encouraged and prayed for my vocation while I was in school

because they recognized the attributes needed to be a priest. Second, Mr. Kevin Walters who was one of the first teachers I had in high school who thought maybe I should

consider the priesthood as my vocation in life. Third, Mr. Tom Rashid who is a mentor of mine, in many ways asked me to think about the gifts I can give back to God and

His Church by discerning a call to the priesthood. Finally, my family members who to this very day continue to pray and invite me to strive for excellence in my ministry.
These are just four examples of people who have had an influence on my call to the priesthood. These are four examples of invitations that were sent to me

inviting me to work and pray for God and for His people. This begs the following questions: When was the last time we, as a parish family, invited someone to think about a

vocation to the priesthood or religious life? When was the last time we actually prayed for a person discerning their vocation in the seminary or religious order? Who did we

invite to be a Shepherd for God’s flock? During this Vocation Awareness Week, I ask that we as one, united parish family, pray for those people discerning their vocations;

and we invite people to really consider giving back to God and His Church by accepting that call to the priesthood or religious life.
On a different note, I would like to thank the Marine City Knights of Columbus Council for their generous monetary donation to Holy Cross Grade School. Their

donation came from their bingo income and this gift will help in maintaining our grade school. So, I accept their gift with great humility, but I ask that we pray for the Knights

and for all the good that they do for our Church and our community. One way to help out the Knights is to support their Wednesday Night Bingo by playing or by volunteering

some of your time to one of their bingo teams. Something to think about as we continue to listen to God’s calling as to what we can do to help out our neighbor.

May God’s light shine on us
and bless this day and every day!
Fr. Jim

HOLY CROSS MUSIC MINISTRIES | Daniel J. Susan, Director | www.holycrossonline.net | music@holycrossonline.net

Catholic Schools Office

Various Catholics schools throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit are hosting open houses this month. Catholic schools are an integral part of the educational ministry of the

Church, which continues the teaching mission of Jesus Christ. Catholic schools proclaim the Gospel; develop a faith community in which Gospel values are formed,

experienced and lived; preserve and teach the doctrines and traditions of the Catholic faith; and provide a learning environment which fosters academic excellence.
Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the Office of Catholic Schools to help Catholic schools provide their students with exceptional academic training and

faith formation. The office, which is part of the Department of Education, provides teacher education and accreditation services, develops ongoing policy and curriculum

guidelines, and offers professional growth opportunities for teachers and principals.
CSA Minute
Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
“Let us seek in faith the glory of God”!

Following today’s feast of The Baptism of Jesus, our church liturgical year opens up a short period of ordinary time, then launches headlong into Lent. Ordinary

Time gets its name from the practice of numbering the Sundays sequentially (as in “ordinal” numbers). So, it isn’t ‘ordinary’ in the mundane sense, but marks and

celebrates the teachings of Jesus and the day-to-day events of His life.
Extraordinary Ministers of Eucharist
There will be a brief “refresher” and update meeting for all Eucharist Ministers on Tuesday, January 15th at 6:00 p.m. in Holy Cross Church. There are a few “new”

directives that are important for all to know.
National Vocation Awareness Week
As we enter into this week, we are challenged to recognize God’s presence anew in our lives. There are many ways that we can support the awareness,

development, and increase in vocations to priesthood, consecrated life, marriage and generous single life. Pray daily, individually or as a family. Pray the rosary together as

a family for vocations, for those in our families & parish in seminaries or religious formation. Discuss with others the importance of following God’s call every day. Live a life

of service to others. Pray for your parish priests and religious. Encourage others to consider such a vocation. As parents, be a witness to your children of faith and

reconciliation. We are all called to be the wise men and women of our day who seek and desire a lasting relationship to our God of faithfulness and love and to offer a total

gift of ourselves in cooperating in the building up of the Kingdom of God.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
On Friday of this week, we begin the week (January 18-25), of prayer for Christian Unity. We hold this time sacred in prayer and in the works of justice and human

dignity through ecumenical collaboration.

What are you doing for Lent?
The upcoming season of Lent offers everyone the opportunity to grow in union with Christ Jesus, strengthen faith, increase sincere love for one another, and joyful

generosity of spirit. We make this journey together as we gather at the Sunday Eucharist, pray, share our goods with others, fast, abstain from meat, read and reflect on

the scriptures, experience the sacrament of reconciliation, and reach out to others with compassion and charity.
Beginning Sunday, February 10th, our parish children will be invited to gather for “Children’s Liturgy of the Word” during the 9:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Cross and the

11:30 a.m. Mass at St. Catherine’s.
The first gathering of a parish Adult Scripture Sharing will be Wednesday, February 13th at 6:45 p.m. at St. Catherine’s. We will meet for five weeks throughout

Lent. All men and women are welcome to come and be renewed by God’s Word. If there are folks who desire a 10:00 a.m. morning gathering at Holy Cross, please let us

know.

Rides Still Needed to Mass

We have two very faithful female parishioners that are in need of our help.
One would like a ride to any Holy Cross Mass every week, the other needs a ride only during bad weather, she would need room for her wheel chair. Please call

Sr. Mary Ann or Holy Cross Rectory Office at 810-765-3568 if you can help.

A Note From The Principal

I would like to thank the many parishioners that have joined us for Friday Mass. The last two weeks have been wonderful examples of how we are able to educate all of

our children, both academically and spiritually. Thank you for setting such a shining example of faith in action for our children to follow.
This weekend we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. What a wonderful experience this must have been for all who were in attendance! One of the wonderful parts

of being a part of Holy Cross Catholic School is that we get to experience the sacraments on a variety of levels. We have had students baptized during our Masses. We

prepare our second graders for their First Communion. We are able to participate in the sacrament of Reconciliation during both Advent and Lent. Finally, we work with our

eighth graders as they complete the Sacraments of Initiation through their Confirmation. Today, Sunday, the eighth graders of Our Lady on the River Parish will be attending

their Confirmation retreat. It is wonderful to be able to live these sacraments on a daily basis, and play a part in the formation of the WHOLE child.
This week is National Vocations Awareness Week. I am thankful for the wonderful spiritual leaders we have in Fr. Jim, Fr. Matt, and all of our priests, as well as

Sr. Mary Ann and all of the other religious leaders that help in the formation of our children
With the New Year comes new plans. It is time to start thinking about plans for the next school year. Do you have a little one who might be ready for preschool in

the fall? Perhaps you care for your grandchild during the day, and think that he or she would benefit from the social experience of a preschool program. Are you ready for

your son or daughter to start kindergarten and not sure what road to take? We are happy to welcome you to Holy Cross Catholic School. If you have questions about our

programs, I invite you to call me at 810-765-3591 or email me at principal@holycrossonline.net.
This week, our boys’ basketball teams will be playing at St. Augustine on Monday. On Wednesday, we will be hosting St. Peter’s. Our season comes to a close

at the end of this month, so if you haven’t been able to join us for a game, please take the opportunity to come out and cheer along with our cheerleaders as they encourage

our boys! On Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Mrs. Wade and Ms. Robinson will be holding a science fair information meeting for parents of our fifth, sixth, and seventh graders, in

the science lab. This is a wonderful way to learn more about how we can work together as PARTNERS in education. In a couple of weeks we will be celebrating Catholic

Schools’ Week. This is an excellent way for us to rejoice in who we are and in what makes us special! Please pray for us during this time, and for all who may be

considering a quality Holy Cross Catholic School education for their children.

National Vocation Awareness Week
January 13-18, 2008

As we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by John, we look back to our own baptism, when we were brought into the saving Passion, Death and

Resurrection of Jesus. At our Baptism, we received a commission to live out our faith in the world. During this week’s celebration of National Vocation Awareness Week,

we recommit to following Jesus, we pray for the guidance to find where he is truly calling us, and pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. True

joy comes in finding the path that God has laid out for you; let us all renew that call of discipleship received at baptism. If you feel God is offering you the grace of a vocation

to the priesthood or consecrated life, call Father Tim Birney at the Vocation Office at 313-237-5875 or visit our website at www.vocationsdetroit.org.

The Christmas Story - The Christmas Song

Every year it is the same thing - the same songs - the same story. And we wouldn't have it any other way. We shouldn't have it any other way.
We repeat the story of the coming of our salvation so that new listeners begin to learn it and longtime listeners continue to learn it.
We repeat the songs of our ancestors knowing instinctively that there is truth and wisdom in these old carols and hymns which makes it important for us to keep

singing them. As we sing them, new Christians are taught
by Jesus even as longtime believers continue to be discovered by the baby in the manger.
The words and notes and rhythms of these songs are the barn and the hay and the animals which surround the great miracle in Bethlehem. This great miracle

must also occur in our hearts.
Do not mistake the container of love, for the love itself. Do not confuse the song with the message. Do not see the manger but see Jesus. And do not see only a

baby, but see the Savior
If you listen closely to our Christian songs you will hear the true message of love sitting quietly behind every word and every note. This is the reason why we sing

our song of love:  It is the song of salvation.
Every year it is the same thing - the same songs - the same story. And we wouldn't have it any other way. We shouldn't have it any other way.

I hope you've found our new website easier to use and more informative. The "Frequently Asked Question" page has two items that are helpful: "Site Map" and

"Statistics."
Click on "Site Map" and you'll see either an outline, table, or list of the content of the entire website. This can be helpful to see how the site is organized and

what's available.
How many people visit our website? Click on "On this page" and you'll be taken to written and visual statistics about our visitors provided by the software

"Awstats." Currently you can see the information about 2007 but it will be updated monthly. I think one of the most useful sections is "Definitions and explanations for the

various terms you'll see used in AwStats."

Sharing the Gospel

Jesus came to John one day to be baptized. Jesus was God's Son, and had no sin for John to wash away in the Jordan River. But Jesus wanted to be baptized

anyway, to please his Father in heaven. God looked down from heaven, and when Jesus came out of the river, God sent his Spirit to rest on Jesus like a dove. Then God

spoke from heaven for John and everyone else to hear. God said, "This is my son."

Prayer
Dear God, thank you for showing John that Jesus was your Son.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of Jesus on the day of his baptism.

Mission for the Week
Ask your parents to tell you about the day when you were baptized.

Veterans Thank You

On behalf of Bob Williams, Chaplain, and myself, we “Thank You” for the donations given to the Vets at four hospitals. The men were very appreciative of

everything, especially the baseball caps and dental products. A special “Thank You” to the Holy Cross 8th grade class for remembering veterans who fought in wars that you

now read about in history books.
To everyone who donated working/non-working computers and components, “Thank You”. It helped equip the (new) second shelter on Brush St., Detroit. Homeless

vets are taken in and taught skills, so they might have a chance at a new life.
The following request is made to all members of Our Lady on the River Parish. The personal items are a twelve month need, so any time during the year, if you

would like to donate, call me to make arrangements for pickups. This also applies to the above mentioned computers and components.

Help Needed

For those of you looking for another way to serve, Holy Cross Church will be taking down Christmas décor on today, Sunday, January, 13th @ 1:00 p.m. In order to

be as efficient as possible, we are looking for young and the strong to handle ladders or larger items and others to help organize or participate. Please consider bringing in

the New Year in servanthood by applying your God given gift of work and assisting our Church in re-decorating for our community and for those who wish they could and

cannot.

Mass For The Unborn
at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral

Project Rachel is a healing and reconciliation ministry for those who are suffering from abortion. Annually, we gather to pray for all of us affected by the decision to abort.

Parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, and friends are invited to a healing Mass that will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Sunday, January 20, at Detroit’s

Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, 9844 Woodward. Msgr. Michael LeFevre will be the celebrant.
Project Rachel phone ministers are available to offer confidential referrals by calling 888-722-4355 for hope and help. Project Rachel is sponsored by the Archdiocese of

Detroit.
Thank You

Thank you for the beautiful luncheon you served after my dad’s funeral. The leftovers fed the entire family again that evening!!
