I am thankful for the New Year and all the blessings that I have received so far and I am grateful for the Crosses that God has asked me to carry as well. Fr. Matt is getting

acclimated with his new surroundings and I hope we can give a helping hand in his transition. Speaking of helping hands, I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped

clean and decorate the three parish sites. It was a wonderful display of teamwork and dedication to our parish family. Each site showed a unique style that was welcoming

and very spiritually uplifting. Again, my thanks to all, who gave of their time and their energy to make our Advent and Christmas Seasons so special.
Also my thanks to the choirs and their directors, our music was first rate and it made each Mass a pleasure to celebrate. I hope that we can continue to build on

that foundation and make our music ministry even better for years to come. I just hope we can get more voices to come and be a part of a very important part of our

Eucharistic celebrations.
Finally, I want to extend prayers out to our seminarians who were home during their Christmas Break from the seminary. They were a joy to have around the parish

and lend their helping hands at some of our Masses. I ask that we continue to pray for our seminarians and for all those who are discerning a vocation to the priesthood or

religious life. We need more priests to tend to the people of God because the diocese is getting larger and the priests are becoming fewer. Let us take the time during the

month of January to really ask for more Shepherds to tend to the Lord’s Flock!
All My Prayers,
Fr. Jim

Thoughts From Your Pastoral Associate
“The mystery of God’s love is illumined by the light of
Jesus Christ; let us give thanks and praise!”

We have been given another New Year. We’ve just come away from an Advent season that’s beautiful in its rhythm and traditions, and in this Christmas season

still, come to today’s feast of Epiphany, celebrating God’s light and hope breaking into a world of darkness. It’s about inclusion and unity in the family of God. In one short

month to the day, Lent begins! This month in between gives us a chance to begin to live the year wisely to the glory of God with a sense of direction, a sense of discovery

and a sense of destiny. A sense of direction in our spiritual journey is essential, finding God’s word, God’s presence around us and within.
A sense of discovery opens our eyes and hearts to receive God’s Spirit and be thankful. A sense of destiny guides us to walk with steady step in God’s light,

confident in faith. This one short month’s journey into Lent gives us a chance to look around and within and expand God’s love in our parish community.
The title of one of my very first reflections with you was: “Looking OUT, Looking IN” It can be a good thing, and reminds me of this story to share. A kindergarten

teacher asked the class, “What is the color of apples?” Most children answered red. A couple said green. But one student raised her hand and said white. The teacher

tried to explain that apples could be red or green or even golden, but never white. But the child was persistent and adamant, and finally said: Look inside! Jesus always

looks inside!
Where have you found God? A good question to cap a year’s closing. Where are you looking for God? A compelling question that stands at the beginning of a

New Year which presents new opportunities. May all our journeys this year be led by the brightness of God!
National Vocation Awareness Week January 13-18, 2008
Since 1997 the USCCB has set aside one week in January to reflect, recognize and respond to each one’s vocational call from the Lord. This year, please pray in

a special way for those called to the vocations of Priesthood, Consecrated Religious Life, Diaconate and for those called to serve the Church as Lay Ministers.
A Sincere Thank You
We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude. A lot of work, time, and effort go into preparing our parish church environment and music

for the Christmas season. All of the liturgies, all of the music, choirs, and decorations were a delightful gift enjoyed by all who came to worship. Thank you for the many

hours and generous gift of time and talent to all who provided for this in Our Lady on the River Parish. God bless you!

A Note From The Principal

We have officially entered a new year at Holy Cross Catholic School. It is great to be back! We can now continue our mission: Educating tomorrow’s Christian leaders

by fostering academic excellence in a Christian community. Before we left for our Christmas vacation, the students each ‘gave’ Jesus a birthday present: a kind word,

thought, or deed, or a promise to try his or her best. This week, we opened those gifts and asked ourselves if we really gave the gifts that we promised. Being able to do

this activity is just one of the reasons that I love being a Catholic school leader. I am able to help our students develop and nurture the faith that their families instill in them

every day.
With the New Year comes the New Year’s resolution. Have you made your resolution? Most people resolve to improve their health or relationships with others.

As we begin the year 2008, I hope that you will make learning more about YOUR parish school and the opportunities it provides for your children and grandchildren a part of

your resolution list. I am happy to help you learn more about our programs and the benefits to your family. At Holy Cross Catholic School, we are PROUD to be your

PARTNER in education.
Now that we are entering our first full week of school after the holiday, we are back to regular routines. If you have not turned in a Market Day order, you can still do

so. Please stop in the office or visit www.marketday.com. On Monday, our boys will have a night off before they resume basketball action Wednesday at OLIC. On

Wednesday, I will be welcoming the principals of the Blue Water Area Catholic Schools to the Holy Cross campus for our monthly meeting. I am proud to be able to show

them what a wonderful school we have!
In just a few weeks, we will begin one of my favorite times of the school year: Catholic Schools’ Week. This is a wonderful time for us to celebrate who we are

and what we do. Please stay tuned for more information. I thank all of our parishioners, families, and Fr. Lopez for their dedication to Catholic education at Our Lady on the

River Parish.
While your Christmas shopping is officially finished, SCRIP continues to live on. Did you know that you can pay your Kohl’s and JC Penney’s credit cards with

SCRIP? What a wonderful way to pay your bills and help YOUR school at the same time! Remember that SCRIP is designed to meet your everyday needs as well. We

have gas cards for our local gas stations and major retailers. We also carry grocery cards, from VG’s to Zimmerman’s and many in between. Please stop into the SCRIP

office located in the school building or at the parish office. Thank you for your continued support!

Catholic Schools Office

Various Catholics schools throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit are hosting open houses this month. Catholic schools are an integral part of the educational ministry of the

Church, which continues the teaching mission of Jesus Christ. Catholic schools proclaim the Gospel; develop a faith community in which Gospel values are formed,

experienced and lived; preserve and teach the doctrines and traditions of the Catholic faith; and provide a learning environment which fosters academic excellence.
Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the Office of Catholic Schools to help Catholic schools provide their students with exceptional academic training and

faith formation. The office, which is part of the Department of Education, provides teacher education and accreditation services, develops ongoing policy and curriculum

guidelines, and offers professional growth opportunities for teachers and principals.

Sharing the Gospel

When Jesus was born, angels sang. I'll bet you never thought stars could sing for Jesus, too. But the stars in the sky sang in their own way, just by moving and

twinkling in the sky. The Savior was born. Jesus was the King that God's people had been waiting for. Magi who had been watching the sky saw a star much brighter than

the rest. They followed that star until they found Jesus, and they worshipped their new king.

Prayer
Dear God, thank you for making the stars move and twinkle in a special way, so that the Magi could find Jesus.

National Vocation Awareness Week
January 13-18, 2008

The Magi traveled a far distance from the East to have a personal encounter with the infant Jesus. In the upcoming National Vocation Awareness Week, we stand

to have a similar encounter with Jesus, who invites us to “Come, follow me!” Let us be open in our response to His invitation, whether to be a priest, deacon, religious,

married or single as one of the many ways that Jesus makes himself known to the world today. If you feel God is offering you the grace of a vocation to the priesthood or

consecrated life, call Father Tim Birney at the Vocation Office at 313-237-5875 or visit our website at www.vocationsdetroit.org.

Maritime Days Meeting

There will be a Maritime Days Meeting on Tuesday, January 8th at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Cross Rectory Conference Room.
All committee chairpersons are asked to be in attendance. Remember, there are only 19 weeks left until Maritime Days!! A lot of planning and coordinating still

needs to be done.

Let’s Talk …Family Planning

The month of January is filled with best intentions for the New Year. Resolutions are made to improve on health habits, finances, relationships, and many more things to

make our lives happy and wholesome. One area often not considered is whether or not a couple will plan to have a child this year.
Many couples do not realize that natural family planning can help couples achieve a pregnancy. Couples are encouraged to prayerfully consider accepting a child into their

family. For more information, call 313-237-4679 or visit our web site at www.nfponline.org.
