A VOCATION PRAYER

God, help me to listen to your call
in all the ways you speak to me:
through prayer and the scriptures,
through the Church and the world,
through those who love and care for me,
and through my own hopes and desires.
Guide me to search openly
and learn about life's choices,
that I may respond faithfully to your call
and choose a vocation and career
in which I can love wholeheartedly
and serve others with the gifts you have given me.
God, today I thank you for your love
and for all your gift of life holds for me. Amen.

Sharing the Gospel

Jigsaw puzzles are fun. Solve a puzzle with your whole family, and it comes together even faster. God helped the wise men solve a puzzle. They wanted to find the

newborn king. Together the wise men read God's promises, did their homework, and followed the star. When all of their answers fit, they found baby Jesus.

Prayer
God, thank you for all the people who helped me
find Jesus.

Something to Draw
Draw a picture of the people who help you learn more about Jesus.

Mission for the Week
Solve a puzzle together with your family. Work together like the wise men did.

“Let us come before the Lord
With worship and praise!

In one of the past editions of the Advent “Little Blue Book” there was a meaningful thought for Epiphany, reminding us that the Magi did not have a very smooth trip.

Travel was difficult and dangerous. There were no signposts along the way. However, the Magi had resources to fall back on. They had each other. They had a star. They

had the help of God. It’s a good reminder for us on this Epiphany Feast, 2009! The journey each of us takes in faith, in spiritual growth, is a long one. We’re on that journey

our whole life-long, and it is not without difficulties, unexpected problems and mishaps. In the journey of faith, GPS doesn’t help much. We do have resources to fall back on.

We have the Church to help us find the Lord. We have the gift of faith given us in Baptism. We have our families. We have each other in our ‘faith family’, called to be a

community that stands ready to ‘be there for one another’.
The Magi allowed themselves to be guided by a God whose light was often shown in unexpected places and unexpected persons. In this New Year, we will still be

surprised by how God is revealed to us along the way. God’s light can guide us into the uncharted future. “We have come to know and believe in the love God has for us”, as

we hear in John’s letter in scripture. We can follow the way of the Lord in confidence day by day, knowing God’s love and care for us.
Today’s Gospel gives us some practical pointers for our lives. The Magi teach us by their example. They had the courage to find the Lord in simplicity and humility.

They acted decisively. They were willing to change their own plan to follow God’s plan. With Epiphany comes the question for us all: “Where does one look for God?”

Sometimes we try to find God and solve the problems besetting us by logical, calculating methods. As we begin another new year, one thing is sure: the news of Epiphany

is that God is found in His incarnation, in the humility of Jesus’ birth in a stable. The Magi point us to the world’s only hope: Jesus Christ, Son of God, Prince of Peace.

Where do we look? The Eucharist is our star-light, our food for the journey, God’s gift to us of the true and real Body and Blood of Jesus, our Lord, God, and Savior.
Pope John Paul II once said: “One cannot live the faith without regularly participating in the Sunday Mass, the sacrifice of redemption and the common banquet of

the word of God and the Eucharistic Bread, the heart of Christian life Sunday Mass is not only an important Christian obligation, but above all, it is a profound need

experienced by each of the faithful.” Where are you looking for God? Where have you found God?

National Vocation Awareness Week
The Bishops have set aside the week of January 11th-16th, 2009 to reflect, recognize, respond and pray for each one’s vocational call from the Lord. Pray that we

will all have the courage to answer God’s call, to follow in His way, so that the work we do will reflect our love and gratitude to God.

Thank You to so many who deserve our gratitude for beautiful Christmas liturgies, environment, music and outreach to those in need. God bless you Happy Epiphany!

PaSTOR'S pAGE
Happy New Year to all! I pray that 2009 will be a year of peace and good will. We have witnessed many misfortunes during the Octave of Christmas from violence in the Holy

Land to job layoffs or loss in our very own state. These misfortunes are an opportunity to pray before God and ask for His strength and courage during these trying and

difficult times. The prayer that we present in front of God should be a call for peace and leaders who will promote peace as Christ the Son taught us. 2009 should be a year

in which we strive in the ability to share good will with all those made in God’s image and likeness. I am very serious about this call for peace so much so that I am going to

increase our opportunities for Eucharistic Adoration. On Sunday evenings, I will expose the Blessed Sacrament at 6:00 pm and repose prior to the 7:00 pm Mass at St

Catherine. The silent adoration is an opportunity to present our needs before our Lord and allow Him to speak to our hearts.
As we welcome a new year, we give thanks for the blessings we received in 2008. One of the things that I have noticed is an increase in our attendance at the

Masses. Some Mass times are crowded more than others and that is to be expected with the increased Mass schedule. However, when speaking with other priests in the

Archdiocese, they too have seen more people attending their parishes. Sometimes the pessimist in me wonders if the increase is because of the tough financial situations

we are facing and people are going before God asking for help in their own personal crisis; however, the optimist in me overcomes the pessimism and I give thanks that

people are returning back to God after being gone for some time. I pray that as the close of 2008 saw an increase in our attendance I hope it will carry over into 2009 and

beyond.
During this holiday break, some of Santa’s helpers brought a new look to our parish school. When you walk through the halls of Holy Cross Grade School you will

notice the return to the Blue and White! These volunteers have spent many hours over the break to get the job done so that the school kids could see their new look upon

their return. I will not mention the names of our volunteers because of anonymity but their work has been tremendous and greatly appreciated by our principal, Mrs. Lund and

by yours truly. I give thanks for these men and women because they accomplished a large task in a short period of time.
My prayers to all as we begin 2009 and my thanks for your generosity in the many Christmas gifts you presented to me over the holidays. God Bless!
Fr. Jim

January Prayer Theme:
The Conversion of St. Paul

As we celebrate the Pauline Year, the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of the apostle to the Gentiles, this month of January, we reflect on the conversion of St. Paul. The

conversion involved a recognition first and foremost that one can be saved only by God's mercy and through sharing in the Death–Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Secondly, as

St. Paul discovered in his dialogue with the Risen Lord on the road to Damascus, to love the Lord, we must love His Body, the Church.

Heavenly Father, as we celebrate the conversion of St. Paul, renew within us a zeal for the message he taught in word and deed–that we are saved, not by our own works,

but by faith in the Death–Resurrection of Jesus Christ. With St. Paul, may we put this faith into action through loving service of the least of our brothers and sisters. We ask

this grace and blessing for ourselves and for all our fellow Christians through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and

ever. Amen.
Happy Birthday Sister Mary Ann
January 9th

Every time we think of you, we thank God,
and pray for you with prayers of joy.
For God began a good work in you,
and will complete that work in years to come.
Our prayer for you now is this:
that your love grow richer
in knowledge and insight of every kind,
that you learn by experience
what really matters,
that on the day you

appear before God,
God welcome you as a flawless gift,
a rich harvest of praise,
through Jesus Christ. Amen.
(cf Philippians 1)

May the Lord bless you and keep you;
May the Lord shed his light upon you,
May the Lord look upon you kindly
and give you peace.
Beginning today, those in the RCIA will set their focus on learning more about the seven sacraments in the Catholic Church: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance,

Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us: “The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments.” - “They are

actions of the Holy Spirit at work in His Body, the Church. The purpose of the Sacraments is to sanctify, to build up the Body of Christ and, finally, to give worship to God.

They not only presuppose faith, but by words and objects, they also nourish, strengthen, and express it.” (CCC, Article 2)
We will begin with an overview of the sacraments of the Church, then follow each week with emphasis on each particular one. Next Sunday, Fr. Matt Ellis will

present insights on the Eucharist as Sacrament during the RCIA formation Sunday session.
Please pray that our catechumens and candidates may find the RCIA process a light to them on their journey into the fullness of our Catholic faith

Words To Live By
